This is my favorite movie of all time! I heard the soundtrack first and saw the movie afterwards. This song is a famous folk song that was sung throughout most of Renaissance Europe. Except for France where the song is called “The Young Girl” it is known as “Monica” or “Monaca”. I am thrilled to think that one of the most beautiful folk songs bears my name!
Few movies have made me feel like I've stepped into another era quite like this one. This scene of the two girls singing accompanied by viol and lute is simply charming.

@Peteronfire He is acting. I don't know the difference either. To me,the movie is about dedicating his life to music regardless of what the world says he should do. And expressing his deep love for his wife as in Love there is no time and space.
With comments like "clarity of the voices" (e.g. nice long sustained notes) and "bathed in gorgeous song", I started playing this song on hydraulophone. Also it would seem there's a strong musical connection between "Une Jeune Fillette" and "Une Jeune Pucelle" ("Twas in the Moon of Wintertime").
@USAsoldier1955 There are suspicions he was a protestant but it's not sure. Anyway I'm watching the movie right now and Depardieu, playing Marin Marais, says verbatim "Il était janséniste" ("He was a jansenist").
A Young Little Girl And the young little girl of noble heart Pleasant and pretty, of great worth Against her will, was made a little nun That pleased her not and thus she lived in great suffering Against her will, was made a little nun That pleased her not and thus she lived in great suffering.
Well, good point, but the problem is I am not holding the theorbo backwards, I am left-handed and I play my lutes the other way round, like Jimi Hendrix dir with his guitar ;-) !
Was it common for lutes to be played that way by left-handed musicians ? For violins (the whole family) and viols, I think they were forced to play like right-handed people do, as it can be an advantage to them, for their "clumsy hand" is the bow hand. The first chair of the second violins of the orchestra Les Siècles plays the opposite way, but he's the only one I've ever seen.
@jpeyton49 Jean Pierre Marielle (Sir Ste Colombe) accepted these lessons but Gerard Depardieu, the actor playing Marais as musician of the king refused.
The title could be "A young maiden"… It is an allemande, a dance of the sixteenth century… it has to be quicker to do steps called "pas doubles" in the Orchesographie of Jehan Tabourot, or Thoinot Arbeau, the treatise describing steps and dances. This one is not described in it, but the music fits a dance.
@HARMONICO101 the reason why he plays so bad is actually because he refused to learn how to play. Such a shame ! I agree with you, It would have been better Iif he had learnt it anyway... It still be (regarding me) a good film, moreover I love this song

Mon pauvre coeur soupir incessamment

This is so beautiful.
And that dappled gray horse nearing the end - stunning! The music enhances her/him and he/she enhances the music. :) Magnifique!
One of the loveliest scenes from this film! I note however that the man "playing" the lute - is playing it upside down. :)
No he is not - it's a left handed lute!

Thank you very much! I have since found it :-) A beautiful film.
Their tutor is playing the theorbo upside down. Left handed?
Dose anyone know if there is an English subtitled version of this movie available on DVD?

Everything is a Rembrandt painting

It’s tear inducingly beautiful 🥹
Thank you for the words in old french.
Sad film , but full of meaning...
Excellent! Thanks!

I want to die in my ear with this song... may not be simply to express, how beautiful!!!
what is the English translation of the song's title?
A young lady ( child )
A Young Little Girl
And the young little girl of noble heart
Pleasant and pretty, of great worth
Against her will, was made a little nun
That pleased her not and thus she lived in great suffering
Against her will, was made a little nun

exquisite...

superbe.
This scene is so cute. The girl on the left seems to very much enjoy what she is singing.
amo esta película
qu'elle est le nom du film ?
Tous les matins du monde
@USAsoldier1955 she was not huguenot! she was jansenist catholic! in the film anyway
@USAsoldier1955 Nope, Sainte Colombe was a very strict jansenist.
Precioso!
I totally agree with you. Still, it must be hard to find an actor that knows how to play the viola. Oh well, gotta live with it...
actually they are not huguenots but jansenists (french catholics who believe in predestination often former huguenots like la marquise de Maintenon).

Y'avait jean pierre Marielle
@HARMONICO101 he actually refused viola da gamba lessons, that's why he plays so bad. However it still be, to my mind, a good film. I love this song
