Honestly, I prefer how they sound in a medium chamber. :^/ For me, the long decay kind of overwhelms the intimacy, and smears the harmony when the chords changes faster than the reverb decays. An organ can power thru that issue; but this isn't that loud an instrument.
@@pbasswilThe reverberation of this room is very challenging for every bowed string player. Some years ago I heard a concert from the Kronberg Academy in the church St. Peter und Paul in Kronberg with young cello players. Only one of them mastered the heavy reverberation of this nave.
I landed here after watching Jordi Savall play some Bach & I'm reminded new generations of early music artists have the opportunity to build upon the ground laid for them by their teachers/ influences. I see HOURS of daily practice in Isabel's playing, and imo, an appealing sense of interpretation ...which communicates to the listener both the artist's passion and the composer's imagination. Imagipassion! Health and long life. All Good All Ways :)
Sure that you can hear the difference between viola da gamba and baroque cello in different recordings of the Bach cello suites (I know one played on viola da gamba) or the Bach viola da gamba sonatas (there are many interpretations with baroque cello (including cello piccolo)?
You can get them off of eBay for a rather expensive price if you want a quality made instrument. If you are on a budget, there are some that are under $500 but they are made in China.
Yes, for about a century now, though it was a little slow on the takeoff. Arnold Dolmetsch was recording with viole da gamba in the 1920s and '30s. A lot of those old 78s have been reissued in various formats. Research has brought improvement both in instrument-making and performance - as here we see. Hear.
ahh, thank you! I've been playing cello for decades and gamba for few years, and this is the best playing I've seen so far. Abel's Arpeggio would maybe have worked better (and easier) with long bows though... but very aggressive and really really nice anyway!
If she would play back in black from AC DC in that church on her viola da gamba the walls and roof would come tumbling down so excellent is she on her instrument🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💞💞🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌈🌈🌈
I know that it's about our hearts when it comes to worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ with music, but I think a viola da gamba would be wonderful for worship. Worship music with all baroque instruments would be cool!
...wonderful....I imagine you likely grew up playing cello and holding the bow on top. How did you learn to hold the bow from underneath...it really makes sense in a way to hold the bow that way....I wonder if there are any modern cellists who hold the bow from underneath? thanks
She plays the 7-string bass viola da gamba exceptionally well.
She's very good. I think there are a couple spots where she rushes a couple passages.
She's still young. She is very good.
Nice.....the reverb in that church is epic, bet it was super inspiring to play in there.
It was a good choice of venue, it really needs a room with good acoustics to hear these instruments at their best.
@@allysloper1882 Hence the term 'chamber music''

A virtuoso performance. The acoustics in the room make the sound linger in all its glory. Well done.
She plays with fire and soul.
One of my top favourite baroque instruments. Beautiful.

Viola da Gamba has a such a different character to the Cello I'm coming to love it. I can't help but stop and listen, especially to CF Abel's music.

its for art like this that im still alive!

The Viola Da Gamba needs to return
Beautiful. The music, musician, and location. Didnt realize the viola da gamba was that small.
The viola da gamba is also known as violoncello piccolo, or violoncello inglese.
Bravo Isabel!!! Yor music clean my soul and take me through the times and spaces...
Viola da gamba and the baroque cello; my favorites... !!! This lady is an amazing violist...!!!
Please tell me this instrument is making a comeback.

This is amazing. Bravo! The viola da gamba looks smaller than a cello, with a stand.
Viola is a big family with various size. Some bigger than this one.
Is this Lady the Paganini of the 7 strings?
Yes, yes, yes...
Marvelous!
