- "Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song and tune, a ground of the form called a romanesca.
A broadside ballad by this name was registered at the London Stationer's Company in 1580[1] as "A New Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". It then appears in the surviving A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves."
Jordi Savall i Bernadet (born 1941, in Igualada, Catalonia, Spain) is a Spanish Catalan viol player, conductor, and composer. He has been one of the major figures in the field of early music since the 1970s, largely responsible for bringing the viol (viola da gamba) back to life on the stage. His characteristic repertory ranges from Medieval to Renaissance and Baroque music, though he has occasionally ventured into the classical or even the romantic period.

I was present at St John's Smith Square, London, in 1978 when Jordi Savall played a piece for bass viol composed in 16th Century Spain. When he announced that the bass viol was itself made in 16th century Spain, there was a discernible gasp from the audience. Jordi Savall - one of the great early music performers.
I can just imagine the gasp! I would have joined in!

I have always loved these variations on 'Greensleeves' (first heard played by Michala Petri on the recorder many years ago). I think they sound superb as played by Jordi Savall, and bring an authentic 16th century feeling to the piece. Fabulous.

Toda mi vida me ha encantado esta composición y hay muy buenas y maravillosas interpretaciones que he escuchado múltiples veces, pero la que hacen Jordi Savall y Rolf Lisvelam aquí es impresionante por su belleza y la cantidad de matices con que enriquecen esta maravillosa composición, en gran parte por ese juego de contraste e integración a la vez que se produce en el desarrollo de la composición por parte de ambos instrumentos además de la gran interpretación que cada uno de ellos hace. !De quitarse el sombrero!. Felicidades y gracias por darnos la posibilidad de escuchar algo así.

La verdad es que, ahora que lo dices, parece mas una viola habitual tocada como se toca la viola de gamba cuando, como todos sabemos, hoy día se toca la viola en una postura muy semejante a la del violín.

so often in live performances the audience applause is not played at all, or very short and snapped off like a ripe green bean. I like hearing the pleasure of the audience too, and wish to hear more of it.

How about someone inventing an add-on that removes all that clappy-noise at the end of a performance:
when you've heard that boring audience clap twice, you do get to hat it.
