For nearly 1000 years, the tower of London has been the site of the bloody executions of some of England’s most famous historic figures. And many of the tower’s victims were laid to their final rest within the walls, never to escape the prison where they met their tragic end. A King, 3 Queens, A Prince, 5 dukes and many more noble men and women were buried here. Let’s meet them and learn how they met their doom at the tower of London.

When I think about the Princes in the Tower, I often think about Elizabeth Woodville. Imagine, as a mother, having had your children taken away from you "for their own good," and after a while, never hearing about them no matter how many times you inquire, hearing people never even see them anymore and then going the rest of your life not even knowing what became of them or where their bodies are if they were really dead. Not to mention, the pretenders who keep popping up, claiming to be one son or the other, giving you false hope and dragging their names through the mud. It sounds totally heartbreaking. Bless their souls, mother and sons.
Bah, humbug. Elizabeth Woodville and her family were just as likely to have been ruthlessly ambitious and calculating without a speck of real sentiment. I was quite surprised at how unquestioningly and uncritically anti-Richard III this video was.

It's bizarre how people ignore the fact that the princes's sisters seem to have gotten along fine with Richard and his wife and that Elizabeth never accused Richard of killing her sons. But she was banished from court by Henry Tudor, who would have had even more reason to kill the princes than Richard since Tudor declared the boys legitimate. And there's the little matter of all the people in Burgundy who claim that Richard of Shrewbury was there. There's less claim about Edward being in Ireland, but those claims exist too. I don't know for sure what happened, but I certainly don't think it for sure Richard had his nephews murdered and didn't bother to claim they were dead and produce bodies. @@NancyPollyCy
@@Mindy-kc8cqin medieval time girls weren’t considered as much of a threat so the treatment of the girls would have been better. And chroniclers never said how close the relationship Richard had with his nieces only that after the death of Queen Ann, Richard was rumored to have considered marrying his niece

My Dad took me to see the Tower of London when I was aged 11. It was a cold November day which made the Tower seem even more atmospheric and eerie. It still captures my imagination despite now being 63 😊

Catherine Howard's remains may have been missed and may still lay undisturbed beneath the chapel floor. They may have been slightly moved to accommodate all the other burials and weren't excavated.
The Goosebumps book A Night in Terror Tower is based off the princes' story. It's about a pair of siblings named Sue and Eddy who slowly learn they were once members of the York family (in the Goosebumps universe) and were about to suffer the same fate until they are saved by a wizard. It was made into a two part episode in the TV series while the book has a happier ending.

I did a late night ghost tour at the tower a few years ago, guided by the guards. It was amazing.

Margaret Pole running away is a bit of gossip not believed by most serious historians. She is a blessed and a martyr and was beheaded by a novice, so it was brutal.

It’ll probably be covered in the next episode, but I love the bit that Edward Seymour and John Dudley, who each led Edward VI’s government in his stead, are also buried in this chapel. Edward Seymour was Lord Protector, but got ousted by John, and then Edward Seymour was declared a traitor and executed on John’s orders. John was then executed for his role in trying to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne instead of Mary. I like to imagine Edward Seymour laughing at the irony.

I am excited at the prospects that we may have some idea of what happened to the Princes in the Tower. Finally putting that mystery to bed. We may not entirely know what happened to them but at least where they now rest.
It's always very eerie to see a place where people get executed but it's more heartbreaking when you realize most of them were victims of greedy people who will do anything to get their way😒 *looks at Henry VIII*

Sir Thomas More’s head was NOT spiked to Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was not built until the late 1800’s. It was London Bridge.
I remember the portrayal of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury in the historical fiction tv series The White Princess and The Spanish Princess. You definitely felt sorry for her because she was frequently put in the middle of precarious situations and she took care of her mentally disabled brother who was eventually executed. She had this kind of sorrow that was always hanging over her. Knowing her fate and how her execution was handled just make those portrayals all the more distressing.

In my Hometown, we have a Catholic Primary school, St John Fisher's, and a Catholic High school, St Thomas More's. Never realised til I was an adult where those names came from....even though at my Catholic school (St Christopher's) we did learn about the Tudors. Just the Kiddie Friendly version 😂

The present day gravelled parade ground between the White Tower and the Waterloo Block is where Anne Boleyn met her death
It's between 2 buildings just outside of the building where the crown jewels are kept.

All of the stories are tragic, but the Countess of Salisbury's in particular is brutal.

20:17 I watched a documentary that explained this is not very likely to be true, I can't remember what it was called though...They said that lime actually slows down the decay of bodies, even though it has been thought to do the opposite for a while. Also the ground seemed to preserve the others quite well and it wouldn't make sense for just her to disintegrate. Maybe they just missed her 🤷🏼♀️ If I find the documentary, I'll attach a link 👍

Ok legitimate question I have had that no one can answer. If the excuse of K Howard not being a fully formed skeleton is the reason she can’t be found how can the princes of the tower’s bones be found??? Riddle me this. I think K Howard was dug up and stolen.
The bones of the princes were found in the tower itself then transferred then buried without the quicklime. Catherine Howard was buried directly after execution and over covered in a medieval version of quicklime plus her youth equals no bones.
Margaret Pole did not run. The executioner was inexperienced, and hacked at her neck and shoulders until she was finally beheaded. Suzie Edge, author of Mortal Monarchs and Vital Organs talks about it.
It would be interesting to know the stories of non nobles who were executed, at the tower or otherwise.

I went to the tower of London a couple weeks ago on my honeymoon. Still extremely disappointed how wheelchair inaccessible it is. I understand why but I always dreamed of going there and to be able to see so little of it makes me sad. I should've saved my money and just watched this video

The men executed with George Boleyn were not thrown into a pit they were buried on tower green as it was a graveyard mark smeaton Norrie's ,Weston bereton graves were clearly seen by Anne .also the beefeaters at the tower say the same aswell .as do many history books

The story of the Princes in the Tower will always be interesting because we will never know for sure what happened (just as many other history moments lol), but the different interpretations will always be debated. In 'The White Princess' series they focus more on Margaret Beaufort ordering their deaths, and of Perkin Warbeck, linked to Elizabeth Woodville and Elizabeth of York sneaking Richard out. We'll never know for sure, as the video touches on, there are too many different myths to find and the lack of historical evidence. They should examine the bones of the children in the tomb, they can not only trace it to the bodies already there but to the existing royal members now too, to see if someone had kindly(!) murdered them and buried them with their parents, or if it's two other people. I don't know why the church and RF have said no, it's not like they have anything to hide for a 500+ year old murder....
The white princess is pretty much historical fiction. It’s like Bridgerton, based on history to a certain extent, but mostly fictional. Even Richard, who had every reason to want to blame Margaret, could find no evidence that she was involved.
For a start, it portrays Elizabeth and Henry as hating eachother, when by all accounts they were quite smitten with eachother from minute one. Their first child was born eight months after their marriage so they clearly got along. Also, Elizabeth woodville was never imprisoned in Westminster Abbey by Margaret Beaufort, that simply never happened. She chose to retire to Bermondsey Abbey for the last 5 years of her life, probably because after spending most of her adult life almost being executed or seeing her children die, she wished to spend the last few years of her life in religious penance as was common for noble and royal women of the time. Most of the events in the miniseries were either fictional, heavily dramatised, or historically inaccurate

He presented a fake document and paid a priest to defame his dead brother in order to steal the throne. There was no evidence that Edward and Richard were illegitimate that didn’t come from someone that Richard had paid to say it. The woman that their father was supposedly married to was already married and dead by the time the boys were born, so how can they be illegitimate based on their father’s engagement to a dead woman? How can your father be married to a woman who died two years before you were born? MAYBE you could argue that Elizabeth of York was illegitimate because she was the only one of their children born during Elenor’s life, but Richard clearly intended to use her as a political pawn like she was legitimate.
