As long as there are humans, there will be racism. It's easy to try to blame some nameless, faceless "other" for our own failings. I believe that if there were more who took personal responsibility, we'd see less racism.
MWFAnD Systemic racism is a thing, white people have set up systems that put people of color at a disadvantage. It’s not just “putting the blame on a faceless being”. It’s realizing that society puts people of color at a disadvantage. First it was slavery, then it was Jim Crow. Now it’s police brutality, Redlining, gentrification, and mass incarceration. Along with workplace discrimination. A law had to be passed for black women to not be discriminated against if they wear their natural hair. This narrative that people of color just don’t work hard enough and blame white people for their problems isn’t true. It’s false, and it’s a disservice to our rights as human being to dismiss our plight. Why should we have to work ten times as hard just because our skin is darker? It’s not right.
@@alaaye5237 Sorry for the TL:DR, I just want to put all of my thoughts down; in no particular order. First, isn't blaming all white people for something exactly what I was mentioning: blaming a faceless being? Isn't blaming society as a whole, as if it were sentient, also too broad? Is it fair to blame "everyone"? Racism exists, period. Like I said, as long as there are humans, there will be racism. Everywhere in the world you look, you will find racism directed towards some group. That's what I mean by "nameless" and "faceless". YOU are not a group, you are not subject to any group, you are wholly and solely responsible for your own words, actions, and reactions (as am I). I don't buy the diluted dictionary meaning of racism that has become popular as of late, that minorities are somehow incapable of racism; it really should be intensely insulting to anyone to be deemed incapable of something because of their skin color or some broad group-perceptions. Admittedly, I wasn't aware of a narrative where black people have to work harder than, or don't work as hard as whites. Then again, I live in the far northwest of the US where the vast majority of the population up here is white, as is the majority of the prison population. Percentage of incarceration is primarily a demographic and population issue. Although, if there are specific laws that specifically name blacks and other minorities, they should be repealed. Jim Crow laws and all the other segregation laws were abhorrent, and if any still exist they should be stricken from the books with the utmost haste. People have the right to live freely among those with whom they best relate, and shouldn't face restriction by the law. Additionally, I would cast 'affirmative action' in with laws to repeal. I find the infantilization of minorities to be deeply offensive. The idea that anyone would need special help to achieve anything, is a gross underestimation of their potential, and I don't think it's fair for anyone to win or loose because of some artificially set goals or quotas. I am a very calm person by nature. So when I see videos of the police using excessive force, it sickens me; especially if it's for personal gain or satisfaction; or especially if the victim isn't fighting back. There is no justification for needlessly harming someone who is not, themselves, causing harm to others. I suppose their rational is that an "overwhelming force" is necessary to put down a perceived threat, but I really wonder if sometimes their perception isn't skewed. Even if someone has a history or record, that doesn't make them guilty upon suspicion... And beyond that, mandatory minimum prison sentences don't really work to curb crime. Some other solution must be discovered that doesn't punish offenders unreasonably based on seemingly arbitrary data. Redlining and Gentrification are tricky issues. Certainly those who would deny a loan based purely upon skin tone are in the wrong. However, if YOU personally knew someone who had a history of using money unwisely and not paying their debts, would you readily give them your own money? Racism BAD < Financial Responsibility GOOD. As far as housing, I can understand a city's desire to bring people with more/new money into crumbling communities with the hopes of bringing life, safety, and restoration to those areas; the alternative is often to stand aside while buildings disintegrate in disrepair. This does displace those who've historically called an area home, but I don't know if anyone really should have the right to claim "rights" to possess certain geographical locations indefinitely; especially if those areas aren't privately held by the people living there. Where Eminent Domain is used to oust minorities from their homes in order to sell the land to wealthy developers, is where real injustice becomes apparent. No one should be forced to give up their legally owned family home to make room for "more valuable" buildings; culture and community also have value. Ideally, I believe it would be best to find a way to empower those who live in various areas towards the maintenance and upkeep of their own communities. How exactly, I'm am unsure. There certainly is no single "cure". Perhaps the systemic racism thing should be couched in some sort of context. The broad statements I hear about "white people this" and "white people that", don't convey the cultural and geographical nuance necessary for intellectual honesty and consistency. Everyone is a thinking individual, capable of logical and rational thought, and it stands to reason, with the diversity of thought that exists, that some will be more selfish and be more pursuant to shifting the blame for their own insecurities onto others... than others. I believe that it is much less about society as a whole, and more about elements of malice, malcontent, and the laziness of "the mob" (although, maybe that intellectually lazy mob has been growing in number in recent years). Certainly, "some" white people have set up systems that disadvantage minorities, but also many whites have fought and even died for the civil rights of minorities. During the Civil Rights Movement era, there were many whites who were murdered by the racists of the time. I don't say this to justify, or to "make it better", but rather to illustrate that there were those who saw the blacks as brothers, and still do. Someone who blames all black people, or has some ridiculous way to dehumanize them, is weak-minded, weak-moral-led, and lacking in character and integrity. Dehumanize... that's a good word. Broad generalizations dehumanize those we talk about. Obviously a person could write a book addressing each issue facing humanity, and never get to the end. I'm sure you'll notice that I didn't tackle the issue of slavery; either the current day little 's' slavery, or the big 'S' of Historical American Slavery. I don't mean to gloss over the issue. It is a very complex issue and there is much information about Historical American Slavery that has been censored or suppressed. However, just as you wouldn't drive on a busy highway only looking in the rear-view mirror, I believe it is best, safest even, to focus on what is ahead, while keeping a clear understanding of mistakes we must never repeat. Maybe it's an essay for another time. Ultimately, it's all 'Mindset over Everything". Each of us determine's how we choose to act in any given situation; no broad homogeneous "group" is thinking for us. We must focus on being kind to one another, live to the benefit of one another, and find solutions that lead forward to a better future where the contents of our character are valued, but not the style of our hair.

Same dude. The fact that they are ashamed of who they are makes me really sad. No one should be ashamed of their own race, no one should have to know what it's liked to be bullied into wishing you could change your skin colour. Why are people so mean?

There’s good and bad people in every race/ethnic group. If people would start treating each individual come across as their own person vs how people treat one person as that stereotype or how their group is portrayed by media then we would be a lot better off. People shouldn’t be referred to as a generalization but as their own person. It’s sad.
Everytime people are talking about terrorists they always look at me...when I was in 6th grade my classmate bullied me bc I'm black and Muslim, everytime I got home I cried so much that I wanted to change school,o also started to hate myself and developed social anxiety,thx to him now my life is ruined :)
In like 3rd grade the teacher was talking about slavery and suddenly she was like "if slavery didn't end, you two wouldn't be here!" And she pointed to me and this one other black kid. I felt so singled out.
Woah. That is so fucked up. I have a story about this in my school. They made a sheet that said "how many slaves could you buy for blah blah" and it was used in a MATHS class. The whole student body had like an uproar and there was an assembly and someone said "not being funny - you're not apologising so what is the point of this assembly?" And everyone cheered
Austin Fish Though it would be nice to view life this way, it isn’t so simple. Racism is a social construct, but has real affects in our lives and has for many years. Ignoring it would do more harm than good.
@@Yuppp328 I'm not saying we should ignore racism. I'm saying we should embrace your race (including if mixed) , whatever race you are, and be proud of ourselves in general because it's who you actually are. You can't change it. So embrace it.
Opposite for me. My grandma told me to bring a white man home because she thinks they're better. It's sad but she experienced a lot of racism and obviously it messed up her mentality and it became self hate.
Let me make this clear: Choose the man/woman/other *you* *LOVE* Not an specific color. Because if you focus on the perfect person you will slowly become myserable .
I just have to say when you confront someone for making a racist comment or joke you didn't "start" an argument. They started it by being racist. That's my personal opinion.
If I have to be honest I wish I wasn't white. I feel so bad for you. But at the same time I dont want to be in a race that is viewed as racist. So be proud of being black. And shame who ever is racist.

I'm tired of my hair being called nappy and unkempt and being told that I need a perm especially after I just detangled and moisturized it. Why does it always seem like the older generation hates my fro?

My gma used to tell me all the time about my natural hair when I first started that I needed to do something with it. I told her when I reach your age, I'm going to have hair! It's not gonna be thin like yours bc of all those years of relaxing.

I am horribly, awfully guilty of telling a dear black friend that he was "the whitest black person I knew" when I was younger. It's going on 9 years since then, and I still wonder how badly that affected him. I am, to this day, ashamed of it and I think I always will be. I did apologize, for whatever it meant to him, but I make sure I don't repeat that kind of mistake again. 2019 y'all, time to be responsible for what you say.

I've always been told by friends that I was the "prettiest asian" they've met or that I'm "pretty for an asian girl." I always feel like I can't fully compete with white women even though I do love my skin and my culture, so the comment about not being as desirable really rang true.

I hate how even in 2018, when people complain about issues they’ve faced/still face because of their race, people who don’t understand tell folks to “just stop complaining”. But it’s not like the racial bullying has ever stopped.
But everyone gets bullied. Men get bullied for just being men, straight people get bullied just for not liking the same sex, gey people get bullied for liking the same sex, white people get bullied for being white, women get bullied for not being feminists, people get bullied no matter their political stance, Christians are bullied for being Christians, Muslims are bullied for being Muslim. It's All the same hate no matter the reason. I shouldn't have to be ashamed for being a white, christian, women. Bulling is wrong! I don't care who, what, where, or how you are or live, it's not right to bullie others!
I am a white woman. The comment about never being as beautiful or as desirable as a white woman and the comment about how People Of Colour wish to be white really hit me. I always thought that Women of Colour were beautiful and needed to be valued, loved and appreciated. listened to and respected in this world. This is why calling a white woman such as Marilyn Monroe or Angelina Jolie the most beautiful woman in the world is really not okay because it gives in to that white women are more beautiful and also sets a unrealistic expectation and gives in to the European standards of beauty. These comments that the media say are really unfair and problematic.

My teacher started talking about black people and everyone started looking at me as if I had committed a murder at school. I was like “let’s not do that” to my teacher and she stopped 😭😂
I grew up in a minority white area and that always happened to me when talking about Nazis. Except for the teachers never stopped. Did it to the other white students in other classes.

There’s this girl, she always calls me the N-word with the strong “ER” at the end, and she finds it funny as a joke and I just laugh because, I don’t wanna cause anything because it’s a private school and it’s predominantly Caucasian people that attend that say it ALL the time and I just laugh it off, but there are times where I do wanna speak my mind, yet I know I’ll get called out for “overreacting” Also, there was this one time in world geography and we were learning about something and the teacher is a Caucasian female, so were learning about some ancient word and the word is “Frigga” or something like that, and when she said it so many people looked at me. It was honestly embarrassing, and to be completely honest if the school didn’t have a free college program, I wouldn’t even attend. Last story, back in 7th grade there were these kids, caucasian, they used to call me “*weave*” and used to say things such as, “my weave fell off.” And I HATED it. ..All these stories happened at the same crappy school throughout the 4 years I’ve attended.
Akiyachef_52 Just because people are rich doesn’t mean they don’t have problems. And just because someone goes to private school doesn’t mean they’re rich. I go to private school and my family is far from rich, my mum just wants me to get the education that she never had.
In elementary school I wanted to be more black so I could fit In. In middle school i wanted to be white. In high school I wanted to be Hispanic. In college i wanted to be Asian. Now as an adult I am finally happy in my skin. 😀
this is relatable, except im white. in elementary school, i wanted to be even whiter than i was, i wanted blue eyes and blonde hair. (this is actually so sad thinking about it, but when i was like 10 i used to put soap in my eyes hoping they would turn blue.. ) in middle school , i wanted to be black or hispanic, and in high school i wanted to be asian. we always want something we dont have. by the way, youre really beautiful, dont let anyone change your mind. lol im jealous
Ugh.. this video hits hard, being myself a middle eastern muslim woman is a challenge every single day, because I'm always looked at as" too white to be an Arab" , or "too peaceful to be a Muslim!".. Arabs are different and diverse, Muslims can be good, bad, educated, or not and lots of other characteristics that any other group of people own.. Technically arabs are "white" ironic af cause I doubt we're "white" to the KKK or the president for that matter. When we tried making a middle eastern category his party denied it from us actually keeping us "white" on the census... Along with Jews,Turks, Persians,etc

I'm black, white, and cherokee... but my skin is pretty light, and my curls are naturally relaxed- and my black mom has light skin- so if I ever tell anyone I'm mixed they think I'm a white woman trying to be mixed when really I have a Cherokee citizenship and have been raised with black and native culture along with white my whole life. I'm not white enough- I'm not black enough- I'm not native enough- I'm just... here. And I don't fit anywhere...
For the people who are saying they can't believe racism still exists, where do you live under a rock?? This is why it's important for our children's education to be rounded. Most parents turn a blind eye instead of educating their child about these issues, they are no better than the American government who burnt most history books on the horrors of America's history. I bet you most people don't even know about the American Holocaust of 1921. This is just sad, when i heard the first confession my heart sank to my stomach. This isn't the first time I've heard something like that actually, I can't tell you how many times a black individual has confessed that they wish they could scrub off their black skin or insult others about their black skin. It's truly sad.
I totally agree with what you said, but alternatively to telling the children about the problem, the parents could also just keep an open mind. I mean not saying anything about race really. It sounds strange just hearing it (and believe me, I don't really understand it, while typing) but my parents never made any mention of race ever. To be quite honest, I didn't even really know that "races" existed untill around 4th or 5th grade. I did live in a predominantly white area, but that's not to say everyone was white, and I, as a child, just knew that some people were paler, while others had darker complexions, same as how some had different features as well. I had no idea races really even existed, and didn't think of skin tone to be a large factor of people. When I did find out about races, it fascinated me in a scientific way, to say, that people were all unique because of the many people before them. My experience may be a single case, but I wonder if this could also be a good way to bring up kids...
No, I live in a normal country? I am so confused with what everyone says. Racism doesn't exist in Romania. People are judged by what they do or by what their ethic group does. If you see a gypsi it's more probabile to be a not very nice person so people might be more careful with them BUT if you are nice nobody cares. I have many examples nice and correct gypsies that do just fine.
As an Indian i would never ever trade my race. I am proud of who I am, and my country. Respect every race, respect every individual, every culture, every place.
When I was younger I used to hate being black because of the racist comments I used to get. When I was a little older I understand why they did it I watched the mlk movie and I cried my eyes out and I still do to this day! When I was in 6th grade a guy used to bully me then when I went out his friends would bully me too and spread rumors,that's why I have social anxiety now.. (I'm black and Muslim and I live in Italy,a very racist place)
When the first confession said “I wish I could just be white” tears started flowing. Like I felt that and its heartbreaking to know that minority’s feel this way about their skin color. Honestly, everybody at one point or another thought something along the lines of “why am i this color” and it just hits home because it’s actually a struggle we all have been through.
Actually, on a global scale, white people ~30%) are the minority compared to non-white people (70%). It's weird how black (and Asian) people are seen as minorities when they're not.
I’m the opposite. Im mixed race but my skin is practically white. I’m always left out of my culture. The Indian girls at school never include me and don’t include me. I wish people saw me as more Indian. I hate that people only see the colour of my skin and outcast me from my culture
Stop trying then. It’s good to hang out with people of different cultural backgrounds. If the girls wanna exclude you because you don’t look like them, then they’re probably missing out on someone pretty cool. If they continue to be like that for the rest of their lives, they’re gonna wish they had fixed that issue earlier.

When I was in middle school, I always thought that no matter how beautiful I grew up to be, guys would never find me as attractive as a white girl. That one secret was almost word for word what I thought about myself for a lot of my life as a young biracial girl - even if no one directly told me these things, going to a predominately white church and school and seeing white women glorified in media sent those messages. So glad to see more representation in media today
A lot of black guys would think she was beautiful because she's half white and therefore less black. Which is the same thing. Self hatred is strong in the black community especially among black men. They deify any woman who is not darkskinned.
@@hii.7219 I'm sorry that you have to experience that. Just think of the what black girls who are not mixed go thru on an every day basis. Black men and black boys have a self-hatred issue that has nothing to do with black women/girls, biracial/mixed women and girls or women and girls of other races. They hate themselves because simply put they lack power in this world compared to other races of men especially white men. Unfortunately powerless men take out their pain and frustration out on the only people who they believe have less power than them women. Particularly black women and then biracial/mixed women by association. The reason these black boys at school need for you to feel worthless is because they feel worthless. Black men and boys who hate themselves don't make good partners to anyone so they may pick white girls to date but they are only going to bring pain and misery to those girls lives. This isn't something black women or biracial/mixed women can fix for them. The only thing I can suggest is that you avoid them if you can.
I'm black. And I love my skin. I love my culture, my language my family, my hair, my voice, my eyes, everything. I love my black friends who "talk black". I love being different, because if everyone in this world were to be the same race, same language, same look, same voice, same everything... then the world would be a boring place. Love your race, don't waste your life wishing you could be something that your not and that you don't need to be.
3:22 when the comment said "I will never be as beautiful as a fully white woman," hit me so hard... I am a fully white girl. It makes me so sad to hear things like other races wishing they were white because maybe they wouldn't be bullied anymore or maybe they would feel accepted or maybe they would like them-selves better. I just want those people to know that the grass ain't always greener on the other side and that having a culture and community and something to fight for is incredible. @@jasminex6421 have you thought of investigating who your ancestors were? It would help you to find a culture/cultures to connect to. "Whiteness" and "Blackness" stripped the original cultures of our ancestors and forced them to to meld into new things. Unfortunately for us who are "black", our new culture is all we have (we usually can't trace our roots past slavery, whether in the Americas, or in the Caribbean like myself). But, being "white", chances are higher that you can trace your roots to the actual country/countries that your ancestors came from. I'm sure you will find something rich and meaningful beyond the atrocities of the past.

When i meet them they usually ask for my religion and i tell them muslim and they keep saying it or sometimes bully me for it, but i shut it down before it gets bad, it stills go to this day

I can relate, I'm Mexican and my boyfriend is white and when I go over to his dad's house for the holidays he always makes smart little remarks on "the wall" and being deported. It hurts but I laugh it off and pretend to joke with him...
My mom is black, but my biological father is Hispanic. I'm mixed and it shows through the color of my skin. A lot of girls would say that I don't know what it feels like to be black because the media always glorifies light-skin girls. I love my race and I love my color, but to be honest sometimes I just don't feel black enough because I have siblings and friends who are brown-skinned and would put me in a different category and that makes me feel left out.
I'm sorry but I just don't understand. You are half black and half Hispanic, correct? But expect black people to characterize you as fully black? @@BirdsEyeViewCaCaww Where I live they don't classify you as black if you have a different race in you that causes your skin color to be lighter. They overlook the fact that I am mixed with black. It's wrong and ridiculous, but just like the girl in the video who touched the issue of being light skin, I think a lot of people just exclude light skin girls and forget that there are black as well. It's not that I don't like being Hispanic or I don't like the color of my skin. My siblings and friends just put me in a different category because I am not as dark as them.
IDK I'm not black American or even American so I can't relate to your cultural or personal experience. I guess what I'm not understanding is why do mixed black people try and identify with the black community but never the other way around? Like I've never hear of a half black half white person even try and identify as a white person. (As an example, I know you're not half white) Like why not? They are half and half they have the right to both groups. Also I don't think people in your country know the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture, especially since the same word is used to describe all three. It just really makes no sense to me idk...
BirdsEyeViewCaCaww yeah so there’s this thing called the ‘one drop rule’ that white people created centuries ago in order to keep their race “pure”. they stated that if you even had the smallest amount of black in you, you were considered black. that ideology carried on for centuries in america and even though we’re starting to be more progressive in letting biracial people embrace both sides of their ancestry, it’s so engrained into american history and culture that most mixed people just identify as black.
I can relate strongly to 3:30. I get all the time from my family members that I talk very “proper” and sometimes I don’t feel like I fit in within my own race. There are other instances too but that’s not for the internet for me to disclose.
Growing up, I was the only black kid for years until I moved to Haiti and was the only American kid. I was always different, but always welcomed. The only time I questioned my blackness was when I moved to Brooklyn. I didn't act like them, didn't speak like them, didn't have the same interests, and for that reason I was considered an "oreo". I can relate to how you as well. Looking back, it's funny thinking that I, who lived in an all black republic and spoke the native language, wasn't black enough but they were.

In high school I got blocked from going into a classroom by a few guys while they all started whispering "Nigger" I managed to get through and just sat there trying not to cry, everything in me told me to run out and go home but I studied really hard for the exam I was suppose to take. In the end I just turned it in blank and cried on the way home. I never really told anyone about this. To this day I still struggle with this and re-live this moment. I was just walking in the school hallways minding my own business.

i don't wanna see comments about not seeing color. it's AMAZING to see color and how different everyone is, to embrace those differences. if we're not seeing color, we're not loving the difference of our world. i'm black and i go to a predominantly latino/a (i'm really not sure what the correct term is, pls educate me seriously) and i've learned so much from latinos. i'm even trying to learn spanish rn to understand them better. it's good to see a difference, it's not okay to discriminate based on said differences
I relate with the last girl not as much because of my skin color, but because of my personality. I don’t talk street, I’m kinda into rap but I’m mainly into rock music, and I guess those are “white” things. I remember my freshman year in high school when a black senior said that I needed to go to Harlem to learn how to be black. I’m proud of who I am but I never really got over that

As a brown girl growing up in the Netherlands, I related a lot with the things said in this video. I grew up in a small town and was bullied and called names like “poop-skin” because I was the only brown girl in my entire secondary school. This pretty much ruined whatever self-esteem I had. My mom didn’t help either and always told me that I had to avoid the sun so I wouldn’t get darker. This all just really messed with my head and to this day I still wish I was white. I hope I can love the skin that I’m in one day, but not in the foreseeable future.
Try being an Asian guy trying to date outside his race. He's invisible to most girls. Thankfully not all girls are like this, but it would be nice to have more girls without prejudice.

I was always mocked in school growing up because I looked Asian, got called all sorts of derogatory names. Here’s the kicker there were quite a bit of Asians at my school too, even my best friend is Asian but none of them got mocked for it like I did and I’m not even of Asian decent. I got angry not only because they were mislabeling my identity but because they are willing to speak so foul on a race that’s actually beautiful yet hold their tongue when talking to someone of actual Asian decent. Later on my grandma told me my eye shape was a product of my Native American ancestors.
I relate to the "not black enough" statement. Sometimes I wished I was darker so people would know that I'm black. Because we are so beautiful. And it kinda hurts when someone tells you that you don't fit in with what they perceive. We're amazing in all shades and attitudes. And we are so much more than stereotypes
I live in Mississippi, and we just recently got a new senator who has been publicly filmed saying “if there was a public hanging, I would be on the front row to see it” yet she still won. This disappointed me cause I grew up thinking there were less racism than in times past but only to find out ppl like this still exist...all I can say is I view EVERY race as my brother and sisters and to hear one of us talked down on a fellow human just breaks me

It's funny you mention the countries with barely any white people. As a Black person, when I used to think of colorism, I would usually think of the manufactured version that resulted from colonialism. But in other areas of the world, different forms of colorism have developed naturally, completely on their own. As an example, you could look at East Asia: In China, Japan, and Korea, colorism is an ancient practice. It started as a status symbol. Servants and laborers worked outside in the sun, giving them darker complexions, while nobility had the luxury of staying indoors. Pale skin = power, royalty, riches. Over time, this fixation on paleness as a sign of power developed into a new beauty standard. Who wouldn't want to look like an Empress? Who wouldn't want to marry a woman who looks like she's royalty? This led people of the same groups to discriminate against one another, just because of skin color and the perceived power it held. All this happened way before Europeans burst onto the scene, so even though they're biased towards lighter skin, you can't really call them "euro-centric." If anything, the countries I mentioned were very resistant (and often hostile) to European interference, so they probably wouldn't have adopted their beauty standards. People just came to these biases on their own. These same biases still exist, and they're prevalent (in varying degrees) throughout Asia. Funnily enough, the person who first put me on to pre-European colorism was an Indian girl. She said something to the effect of "we didn't need europeans to tell us we should hate ourselves, we figured that out before they even got here." idk why but that had me dying 😂 it really stuck with me though.
Europeans aren’t exactly homogenous phenotypically. We are all different branch races of the Caucasian main racial lineage, which is predominantly found across Europe and Asia. The diversity of the earth is beautiful and people should love, protect and have pride over their individualism and identity. I love my Icelandic, Germanic Scandinavian demographic and respect and see the importance of all others.
When I was in first grade, I was colorist. I went to the store to get a particular cake that had a Barbie doll. The Barbie doll was black and I said I don’t want this Barbie doll because she was black and ugly. I’m not colorist anymore and I learned a lesson from that.
When we started learning about residential schools, a teacher asked me if my family went to one, she than asked if I lived on a reserve. I've been told by family to hide the fact that I'm indigenous because there's been a target on indigenous women around the area I live in. I hate that I have to hide who I am so I'm not next..

as an Chinese American, I was afraid to watch this video because I thought it would once again leave out east asians as an oppressed minority. Even though we've been bullied all our lives to the point of normalizing and even rationalizing it. Despite the fact we're constantly looked down on, marginalized and given the short end of the stick, our problems are always ignored and treated as 'not as bad as' black problems, so we're not worth noting. After watching the video... I feel like I was right. We're just disregarded as if our problems don't count. Probably because we often don't even speak up anymore. And I wish jubilee of all groups would make more of an effort to make that perspective known.

I’m Chinese, and the mindset there as a whole is not so inclusive, because Chinese people are typically one race. (not saying Chinese is a race, I know that Asian is a race.) But here, we’re talking about Asian AMERICANS. Our experience in a America is not the same as our experience in Asia. You cannot just say East Asian people are ‘so white’, because we’re not. Asian Americans have been marginalized throughout history, and most people as Asian Americans have definitely experienced derogatory experiences because of their race. I condemn the racism that is happening in China right now, but what about the racism towards Chinese/East Asian people that has been going on with the coronavirus? I, as an Asian American have experienced racist comment being made about the coronavirus, towards my race, and towards me directly. I’m mixed. My dad is black and korean and my mom is white and Honduran. But I was once friends with a korean person and he asked me out, I didn’t answer yet, but he then said, “If we do date, then my parents can’t know about you.” And when I asked why he said, because I wasn’t fully korean.. this happened again with a Hispanic person as well...
I’m not mixed both my parents are black and I grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood and went to a not so great school both full of black people. All the people in my neighborhood spoke like how black people are “supposed” to speak in society’s eyes. But for some reason I never picked up on any of the slang or the accent that they had. Adults would tell me that I spoke properly and told me that I spoke like a white person and that I should take that as a compliment. It didn’t help that I didn’t listen to rap music that much and I didn’t have the same interests as the other black girls in my school. I’m a really dark skin girl and kids would make fun of the color my skin and continue to call me white. They made me feel like I wasn’t a real black person because I didn’t fit into their perception of how a black person was supposed to be WHICH WAS A STEREOTYPE.
a couple of years ago, my sister and I (we're mixed, black and asian) were talking about her brown friend who wanted to be white. during this conversation, we made fun of her because both of us had "grown out of that phase" in elementary/middle school. I never said anything about it to her friend's face, but I wish I didn't think so insensitively about it. as someone who's struggled with my racial identity in that way and in other ways, I should've been more sympathetic.

Of course there is nothing wrong with being Indian. I believe people stereotype all Indians just because of a few "send bob pics" people, but I think every place has shitty people like that and they're hated more because of their bad english or at times even called illiterate because of it. When I was younger - all I wanted to be was white. I thought white girls were just prettier and easier to love and it would be easier to get ahead in life. Even at my school, the white girls were always given preference. Now I'm older I've finally learned to accept myself as a black woman, it's nothing I can change and I've learned to love myself for the way I was created. It's so so funny how self-love is learnt and not ingrained in us....
I'm 17 and I remember when I was in 1st grade I asked a group of kids if I could play with them on the playground and one of the girls said that I can't because I'm not white (i'm black). Since I was usually one of the only black kids in my school up until middle school, it took I really long time to accept and love my race, because when I was little a lot of times I would secretly want to be white like everybody else.

I'm ashamed to be white sometimes. Some white families say the n word and I always try to tell them the history behind it and why it's racist but they say "it's just a word, if blacks can say it so can we" that crushes my heart, Most people in my school say that all white people are racist, but I'm not and I'm glad I'm not. People always "gave me" the word pass(which is not a thing) but I would always say "I don't have permission to say it, I would rather jump off a cliff then say it".

This is so touching, it's sad this still happens in our society. When i was younger, we were watching a slavery documentary and as the only black person in the class, a few other kids laughed at me for resembling them.

As long as there are humans, there will be racism. It's easy to try to blame some nameless, faceless "other" for our own failings. I believe that if there were more who took personal responsibility, we'd see less racism.

Systemic racism is a thing, white people have set up systems that put people of color at a disadvantage. It’s not just “putting the blame on a faceless being”. It’s realizing that society puts people of color at a disadvantage. First it was slavery, then it was Jim Crow. Now it’s police brutality, Redlining, gentrification, and mass incarceration. Along with workplace discrimination. A law had to be passed for black women to not be discriminated against if they wear their natural hair. This narrative that people of color just don’t work hard enough and blame white people for their problems isn’t true. It’s false, and it’s a disservice to our rights as human being to dismiss our plight. Why should we have to work ten times as hard just because our skin is darker? It’s not right.

Sorry for the TL:DR, I just want to put all of my thoughts down; in no particular order.
First, isn't blaming all white people for something exactly what I was mentioning: blaming a faceless being? Isn't blaming society as a whole, as if it were sentient, also too broad? Is it fair to blame "everyone"?
Racism exists, period. Like I said, as long as there are humans, there will be racism. Everywhere in the world you look, you will find racism directed towards some group. That's what I mean by "nameless" and "faceless". YOU are not a group, you are not subject to any group, you are wholly and solely responsible for your own words, actions, and reactions (as am I). I don't buy the diluted dictionary meaning of racism that has become popular as of late, that minorities are somehow incapable of racism; it really should be intensely insulting to anyone to be deemed incapable of something because of their skin color or some broad group-perceptions.
Admittedly, I wasn't aware of a narrative where black people have to work harder than, or don't work as hard as whites. Then again, I live in the far northwest of the US where the vast majority of the population up here is white, as is the majority of the prison population. Percentage of incarceration is primarily a demographic and population issue. Although, if there are specific laws that specifically name blacks and other minorities, they should be repealed.
Jim Crow laws and all the other segregation laws were abhorrent, and if any still exist they should be stricken from the books with the utmost haste. People have the right to live freely among those with whom they best relate, and shouldn't face restriction by the law. Additionally, I would cast 'affirmative action' in with laws to repeal. I find the infantilization of minorities to be deeply offensive. The idea that anyone would need special help to achieve anything, is a gross underestimation of their potential, and I don't think it's fair for anyone to win or loose because of some artificially set goals or quotas.
I am a very calm person by nature. So when I see videos of the police using excessive force, it sickens me; especially if it's for personal gain or satisfaction; or especially if the victim isn't fighting back. There is no justification for needlessly harming someone who is not, themselves, causing harm to others. I suppose their rational is that an "overwhelming force" is necessary to put down a perceived threat, but I really wonder if sometimes their perception isn't skewed. Even if someone has a history or record, that doesn't make them guilty upon suspicion... And beyond that, mandatory minimum prison sentences don't really work to curb crime. Some other solution must be discovered that doesn't punish offenders unreasonably based on seemingly arbitrary data.
Redlining and Gentrification are tricky issues. Certainly those who would deny a loan based purely upon skin tone are in the wrong. However, if YOU personally knew someone who had a history of using money unwisely and not paying their debts, would you readily give them your own money? Racism BAD < Financial Responsibility GOOD. As far as housing, I can understand a city's desire to bring people with more/new money into crumbling communities with the hopes of bringing life, safety, and restoration to those areas; the alternative is often to stand aside while buildings disintegrate in disrepair. This does displace those who've historically called an area home, but I don't know if anyone really should have the right to claim "rights" to possess certain geographical locations indefinitely; especially if those areas aren't privately held by the people living there. Where Eminent Domain is used to oust minorities from their homes in order to sell the land to wealthy developers, is where real injustice becomes apparent. No one should be forced to give up their legally owned family home to make room for "more valuable" buildings; culture and community also have value. Ideally, I believe it would be best to find a way to empower those who live in various areas towards the maintenance and upkeep of their own communities. How exactly, I'm am unsure. There certainly is no single "cure".
Perhaps the systemic racism thing should be couched in some sort of context. The broad statements I hear about "white people this" and "white people that", don't convey the cultural and geographical nuance necessary for intellectual honesty and consistency. Everyone is a thinking individual, capable of logical and rational thought, and it stands to reason, with the diversity of thought that exists, that some will be more selfish and be more pursuant to shifting the blame for their own insecurities onto others... than others. I believe that it is much less about society as a whole, and more about elements of malice, malcontent, and the laziness of "the mob" (although, maybe that intellectually lazy mob has been growing in number in recent years). Certainly, "some" white people have set up systems that disadvantage minorities, but also many whites have fought and even died for the civil rights of minorities. During the Civil Rights Movement era, there were many whites who were murdered by the racists of the time. I don't say this to justify, or to "make it better", but rather to illustrate that there were those who saw the blacks as brothers, and still do. Someone who blames all black people, or has some ridiculous way to dehumanize them, is weak-minded, weak-moral-led, and lacking in character and integrity.
Dehumanize... that's a good word. Broad generalizations dehumanize those we talk about.
Obviously a person could write a book addressing each issue facing humanity, and never get to the end. I'm sure you'll notice that I didn't tackle the issue of slavery; either the current day little 's' slavery, or the big 'S' of Historical American Slavery. I don't mean to gloss over the issue. It is a very complex issue and there is much information about Historical American Slavery that has been censored or suppressed. However, just as you wouldn't drive on a busy highway only looking in the rear-view mirror, I believe it is best, safest even, to focus on what is ahead, while keeping a clear understanding of mistakes we must never repeat. Maybe it's an essay for another time.
Ultimately, it's all 'Mindset over Everything". Each of us determine's how we choose to act in any given situation; no broad homogeneous "group" is thinking for us. We must focus on being kind to one another, live to the benefit of one another, and find solutions that lead forward to a better future where the contents of our character are valued, but not the style of our hair.

There’s good and bad people in every race/ethnic group. If people would start treating each individual come across as their own person vs how people treat one person as that stereotype or how their group is portrayed by media then we would be a lot better off. People shouldn’t be referred to as a generalization but as their own person. It’s sad.
Everytime people are talking about terrorists they always look at me...when I was in 6th grade my classmate bullied me bc I'm black and Muslim, everytime I got home I cried so much that I wanted to change school,o also started to hate myself and developed social anxiety,thx to him now my life is ruined :)

I am horribly, awfully guilty of telling a dear black friend that he was "the whitest black person I knew" when I was younger. It's going on 9 years since then, and I still wonder how badly that affected him. I am, to this day, ashamed of it and I think I always will be. I am a white woman. The comment about never being as beautiful or as desirable as a white woman and the comment about how People Of Colour wish to be white really hit me. I always thought that Women of Colour were beautiful and needed to be valued, loved and appreciated. listened to and respected in this world. This is why calling a white woman such as Marilyn Monroe or Angelina Jolie the most beautiful woman in the world is really not okay because it gives in to that white women are more beautiful and also sets a unrealistic expectation and gives in to the European standards of beauty. There’s this girl, she always calls me the N-word with the strong “ER” at the end, and she finds it funny as a joke and I just laugh because, I don’t wanna cause anything because it’s a private school and it’s predominantly Caucasian people that attend that say it ALL the time and I just laugh it off, but there are times where I do wanna speak my mind, yet I know I’ll get called out for “overreacting”
Also, there was this one time in world geography and we were learning about something and the teacher is a Caucasian female, so were learning about some ancient word and the word is “Frigga” or something like that, and when she said it so many people looked at me. It was honestly embarrassing, and to be completely honest if the school didn’t have a free college program, I wouldn’t even attend.
Last story, back in 7th grade there were these kids, caucasian, they used to call me “*weave*” and used to say things such as, “my weave fell off.” And I HATED it.
..All these stories happened at the same crappy school throughout the 4 years I’ve attended.

For the people who are saying they can't believe racism still exists, where do you live under a rock?? This is why it's important for our children's education to be rounded. Most parents turn a blind eye instead of educating their child about these issues, they are no better than the American government who burnt most history books on the horrors of America's history. I bet you most people don't even know about the American Holocaust of 1921. This is just sad, when i heard the first confession my heart sank to my stomach. This isn't the first time I've heard something like that actually, I can't tell you how many times a black individual has confessed that they wish they could scrub off their black skin or insult others about their black skin. It's truly sad.
I totally agree with what you said, but alternatively to telling the children about the problem, the parents could also just keep an open mind. I mean not saying anything about race really. It sounds strange just hearing it (and believe me, I don't really understand it, while typing) but my parents never made any mention of race ever. To be quite honest, I didn't even really know that "races" existed untill around 4th or 5th grade. I did live in a predominantly white area, but that's not to say everyone was white, and I, as a child, just knew that some people were paler, while others had darker complexions, same as how some had different features as well. I had no idea races really even existed, and didn't think of skin tone to be a large factor of people. When I did find out about races, it fascinated me in a scientific way, to say, that people were all unique because of the many people before them. My experience may be a single case, but I wonder if this could also be a good way to bring up kids...

No, I live in a normal country? I am so confused with what everyone says. Racism doesn't exist in Romania. People are judged by what they do or by what their ethic group does. If you see a gypsi it's more probabile to be a not very nice person so people might be more careful with them BUT if you are nice nobody cares. When the first confession said “I wish I could just be white” tears started flowing. Like I felt that and its heartbreaking to know that minority’s feel this way about their skin color. Honestly, everybody at one point or another thought something along the lines of “why am i this color” and it just hits home because it’s actually a struggle we all have been through.

When I was in middle school, I always thought that no matter how beautiful I grew up to be, guys would never find me as attractive as a white girl. That one secret was almost word for word what I thought about myself for a lot of my life as a young biracial girl - even if no one directly told me these things, going to a predominately white church and school and seeing white women glorified in media sent those messages. So glad to see more representation in media today

They hate themselves because simply put they lack power in this world compared to other races of men especially white men. Unfortunately powerless men take out their pain and frustration out on the only people who they believe have less power than them women. Particularly black women and then biracial/mixed women by association. The reason these black boys at school need for you to feel worthless is because they feel worthless.
Black men and boys who hate themselves don't make good partners to anyone so they may pick white girls to date but they are only going to bring pain and misery to those girls lives. This isn't something black women or biracial/mixed women can fix for them. The only thing I can suggest is that you avoid them if you can.
Hearing these secrets makes me appreciate the way my parents raised me, the self love that they instilled in me. I love the skin I'm in!

"Whiteness" and "Blackness" stripped the original cultures of our ancestors and forced them to to meld into new things. Unfortunately for us who are "black", our new culture is all we have (we usually can't trace our roots past slavery, whether in the Americas, or in the Caribbean like myself). But, being "white", chances are higher that you can trace your roots to the actual country/countries that your ancestors came from. I'm sure you will find something rich and meaningful beyond the atrocities of the past.

My mom is black, but my biological father is Hispanic. I'm mixed and it shows through the color of my skin. A lot of girls would say that I don't know what it feels like to be black because the media always glorifies light-skin girls. I love my race and I love my color, but to be honest sometimes I just don't feel black enough because I have siblings and friends who are brown-skinned and would put me in a different category and that makes me feel left out.
I'm sorry but I just don't understand. You are half black and half Hispanic, correct? But expect black people to characterize you as fully black? BirdsEyeViewCaCaww yeah so there’s this thing called the ‘one drop rule’ that white people created centuries ago in order to keep their race “pure”. they stated that if you even had the smallest amount of black in you, you were considered black. that ideology carried on for centuries in america and even though we’re starting to be more progressive in letting biracial people embrace both sides of their ancestry, it’s so engrained into american history and culture that most mixed people just identify as black.
I can relate strongly to 3:30. I get all the time from my family members that I talk very “proper” and sometimes I don’t feel like I fit in within my own race. There are other instances too but that’s not for the internet for me to disclose.

Growing up, I was the only black kid for years until I moved to Haiti and was the only American kid. I was always different, but always welcomed. The only time I questioned my blackness was when I moved to Brooklyn. I didn't act like them, didn't speak like them, didn't have the same interests, and for that reason I was considered an "oreo".

In high school I got blocked from going into a classroom by a few guys while they all started whispering "Nigger" I managed to get through and just sat there trying not to cry, everything in me told me to run out and go home but I studied really hard for the exam I was suppose to take. As a brown girl growing up in the Netherlands, I related a lot with the things said in this video. I grew up in a small town and was bullied and called names like “poop-skin” because I was the only brown girl in my entire secondary school. This pretty much ruined whatever self-esteem I had. My mom didn’t help either and always told me that I had to avoid the sun so I wouldn’t get darker. This all just really messed with my head and to this day I still wish I was white. I hope I can love the skin that I’m in one day, but not in the foreseeable future.

It hurts the most when it’s your own culture being racist towards you or colorist.
I was always mocked in school growing up because I looked Asian, got called all sorts of derogatory names. Here’s the kicker there were quite a bit of Asians at my school too, even my best friend is Asian but none of them got mocked for it like I did and I’m not even of Asian decent. I got angry not only because they were mislabeling my identity but because they are willing to speak so foul on a race that’s actually beautiful yet hold their tongue when talking to someone of actual Asian decent. Later on my grandma told me my eye shape was a product of my Native American ancestors.
I relate to the "not black enough" statement. Sometimes I wished I was darker so people would know that I'm black. Because we are so beautiful. And it kinda hurts when someone tells you that you don't fit in with what they perceive. We're amazing in all shades and attitudes. And we are so much more than stereotypes

It's funny you mention the countries with barely any white people. As a Black person, when I used to think of colorism, I would usually think of the manufactured version that resulted from colonialism. But in other areas of the world, different forms of colorism have developed naturally, completely on their own. As an example, you could look at East Asia: In China, Japan, and Korea, colorism is an ancient practice. It started as a status symbol. Servants and laborers worked outside in the sun, giving them darker complexions, while nobility had the luxury of staying indoors. Pale skin = power, royalty, riches. Over time, this fixation on paleness as a sign of power developed into a new beauty standard. Who wouldn't want to look like an Empress? Who wouldn't want to marry a woman who looks like she's royalty? This led people of the same groups to discriminate against one another, just because of skin color and the perceived power it held.
All this happened way before Europeans burst onto the scene, so even though they're biased towards lighter skin, you can't really call them "euro-centric." If anything, the countries I mentioned were very resistant (and often hostile) to European interference, so they probably wouldn't have adopted their beauty standards. People just came to these biases on their own. These same biases still exist, and they're prevalent (in varying degrees) throughout Asia. Funnily enough, the person who first put me on to pre-European colorism was an Indian girl. She said something to the effect of "we didn't need europeans to tell us we should hate ourselves, we figured that out before they even got here." idk why but that had me dying 😂 it really stuck with me though.
Europeans aren’t exactly homogenous phenotypically. We are all different branch races of the Caucasian main racial lineage, which is predominantly found across Europe and Asia.
The diversity of the earth is beautiful and people should love, protect and have pride over their individualism and identity. I love my Icelandic, Germanic Scandinavian demographic and respect and see the importance of all others.
When I was in first grade, I was colorist. I went to the store to get a particular cake that had a Barbie doll. The Barbie doll was black and I said I don’t want this Barbie doll because she was black and ugly. I’m not colorist anymore and I learned a lesson from that.
When we started learning about residential schools, a teacher asked me if my family went to one, she than asked if I lived on a reserve.
I've been told by family to hide the fact that I'm indigenous because there's been a target on indigenous women around the area I live in. I hate that I have to hide who I am so I'm not next..

as an Chinese American, I was afraid to watch this video because I thought it would once again leave out east asians as an oppressed minority. Even though we've been bullied all our lives to the point of normalizing and even rationalizing it. Despite the fact we're constantly looked down on, marginalized and given the short end of the stick, our problems are always ignored and treated as 'not as bad as' black problems, so we're not worth noting. After watching the video... I feel like I was right. We're just disregarded as if our problems don't count. Probably because we often don't even speak up anymore. And I wish jubilee of all groups would make more of an effort to make that perspective known.

But I was once friends with a korean person and he asked me out, I didn’t answer yet, but he then said, “If we do date, then my parents can’t know about you.” And when I asked why he said, because I wasn’t fully korean.. this happened again with a Hispanic person as well...

I’m not mixed both my parents are black and I grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood and went to a not so great school both full of black people. All the people in my neighborhood spoke like how black people are “supposed” to speak in society’s eyes. But for some reason I never picked up on any of the slang or the accent that they had. Adults would tell me that I spoke properly and told me that I spoke like a white person and that I should take that as a compliment. It didn’t help that I didn’t listen to rap music that much and I didn’t have the same interests as the other black girls in my school. I’m a really dark skin girl and kids would make fun of the color my skin and continue to call me white. They made me feel like I wasn’t a real black person because I didn’t fit into their perception of how a black person was supposed to be WHICH WAS A STEREOTYPE.

a couple of years ago, my sister and I (we're mixed, black and asian) were talking about her brown friend who wanted to be white. during this conversation, we made fun of her because both of us had "grown out of that phase" in elementary/middle school. I never said anything about it to her friend's face, but I wish I didn't think so insensitively about it. as someone who's struggled with my racial identity in that way and in other ways, I should've been more sympathetic.

When I was younger - all I wanted to be was white. I thought white girls were just prettier and easier to love and it would be easier to get ahead in life. Even at my school, the white girls were always given preference. Now I'm older I've finally learned to accept myself as a black woman, it's nothing I can change and I've learned to love myself for the way I was created. It's so so funny how self-love is learnt and not ingrained in us....

I'm 17 and I remember when I was in 1st grade I asked a group of kids if I could play with them on the playground and one of the girls said that I can't because I'm not white (i'm black). Since I was usually one of the only black kids in my school up until middle school, it took I really long time to accept and love my race, because when I was little a lot of times I would secretly want to be white like everybody else.

I really wish that person who suffered the horrific scrubbing incident told their parents. Hearing that was so horrible and I feel so bad for them.
I am African American, and my parents tell me to love and appreciate myself, no matter the situation
growing up in this age has showed me how beautiful my race/ethnicity and culture is. I am so proud to be Indian. But I feel with how you feel powerless when someone says a racist remark.
I'm ashamed to be white sometimes. Some white families say the n word and I always try to tell them the history behind it and why it's racist but they say "it's just a word, if blacks can say it so can we" that crushes my heart, Most people in my school say that all white people are racist, but I'm not and I'm glad I'm not. People always "gave me" the word pass(which is not a thing) but I would always say "I don't have permission to say it, I would rather jump off a cliff then say it".

Don’t be ashamed to be white, based off what you said you see people as people. I respect you standing your ground and not going along with racist people. But I’d say don’t let others change how you feel about yourself. To me it’s not a color thing but a heart condition people have toward other. Much respect
Râpper of white are 80% from Black and arab. This is why racism is True and need to be bring back like before. Différent ppl mean always ppl impossible to solve.
This is so touching, it's sad this still happens in our society. When i was younger, we were watching a slavery documentary and as the only black person in the class, a few other kids laughed at me for resembling them.
