I Bought a $30 U87 Microphone Clone from TEMU, and it's Actually Great?!?

  • In today's video I test out a clone of the classic Neumann U87 that I purchased from the new wish.com competitor: TEMU.
Because it was only $32, I had super low hopes, but to my great surprise, it was actually amazing for that price!! I compare it to a Blue Spark XLR as well as an Aston Stealth microphone
In the final thoughts section of the video, the audio editing I used was as follows:
    Izotope RX8 Voice De-Noise
    Apple Logic Pro Channel EQ
    Native Instruments VC2A
I did end up finding out you can have affiliate links for TEMU, so just for the sake of it, here's that link:
    temu.to/m/u73g...
But like I said in the video, that is not the reason I made this video, I just wanted to order a weird cheap mic and try it out, so if you just want the normal, non-affiliate link to it, here is that:
    www.temu.com/a...
You can find me at the following locations:
    Twitch: / stick_figure
    Twitter: / stckfgrgaming
    Facebook: / stickfiguregaming

You can modify it so that it's very close to the original. There is a "bare cardioid path" mod for it that can be put together on a tight budget. You only need some decent capsule and some transformer like Neutrik, 3u or UTM. In the end you get a professional mic for he price of an Aston. You can also make it cheaper and keep the capsule and only use the circuit. There is a couple components that can be added to shape the response.

I bought the same mic. I agree with his evaluation. Conclusion: $30 is the street reality price for this 87 killer. UPDATE comment: Buy two or three for $100 or so. One for vocalist and stereo band. Yowza!

Not bad, but the tell tell sign is the self noise. There's a hum in the Temu mic that disappeared when you switched to the Spark.

The hum and self noise is annoying and not impressive at all.

Sounds like it has no low end response but for 37 bucks it's really cool

Exactly. Not a ton of low end, but I can’t think of many sub $50 mics I’ve ever heard this good

It actually sounds great bright but not harsh ...better than the blue for the price 😮😮😮

I unexpectedly agree! In my opinion, the Blue sounds better overall, but from a price standpoint, the U87 clone is by far a better value. The Spark is better, but I don’t think it’s $170 more better

I haven't received the one I bought on Black Friday Special for $20. I look forward to getting it.

clicked you're affiliate link and it was $7, haven't even got far enough in the video to hear it but i ordered it. hope it's the same one!

    • @stick_figure7858
      @stick_figure7858  11 месяцев назад

It should be! When I generated the affiliate link, it did say there would be some discount in what it told me to copy and paste, but I only copied the link part of it. This was only the second time I’d ever ordered anything on TEMU and first time I’d tried generating an affiliate link, so I’m certainly still learning how it all works.
      And thanks!

Competition has forced even cheap devs to manufacture their gear well. Good demo.

Thank you! I just love microphones, especially these oddball kind of things. I plan on doing some reviews of weird cheap older microphones I’ve picked up on eBay in the near future

Amazing sounding microphone. I got a similar one from China, it's pretty darn good👍

I guess we're paying for subtle differences that are actually worth a lot more in the end of the process. Maybe we shouldn't expect to hear dramatic differences between cheap mics and expensive ones when it's the subtle differences that are the most important.

I'm *starting* to build a little cheap, no frills podcasting-ready "home studio" for myself, and I ordered a very similar mic from Temu (I should have it in about 1 more week, giddy with anticipation!) and I admit, I know virtually nothing about interfaces and speakers, you know, all that stuff that makes a flipping studio!!
    Alas!
I am a drummer, and I play an acoustic kit & for *where* it is set up, in a very large, thick brick sanctuary of a church, the drums themselves don't need to be mic'd up apart from the kick drum, which has a Shure Beta 52A kick drum mic in front of it. It was plugged into the small amp that sits behind me. Sadly, the small amp went away along with its owner and I don't know what on earth else I can plug it into if need be. Cheap suggestions? If I picked up a Temu interface or mixer or whatever, DUMB QUESTION, but what program or laptop app supports a USB mic?? Should I get one of the Temu basic mixing boards? I will probably sell the Shure, but I'm not...Shure. It is soldered onto it's base, courtesy of my old bass player. I'm all full of puns today. Thanks in advance!!

as you're recording it sounds like we're hearing both mics at the same time at parts... however the cheap u87 sounds clean, maybe bright, not harsh... but maybe a tad bit hollow... impressive for $30... but not so much when you think about technology and Chinese mass production aka lower production cost

    • @stick_figure7858
      @stick_figure7858  11 месяцев назад

Clean but hollow is actually a fantastic way of describing the sound. It weirdly also has an almost non-existent proximity effect.
If you don’t mind, where were you hearing both mics at the same time? I have a degree in audio engineering, so I’m very comfortable working in a DAW, but am still very much learning my way around video editing software and definitely appreciate feedback on that front (and this video was one of the most challenging videos I’ve made because the audio switches tracks so frequently)

@@stick_figure7858 I was listening in my studio out loud through my monitors... so as I watched the video and your movement placed you somewhat between the mics... but that could just be the effect of being outside the pickup position
I found the Blue to be clean and have "body" to its presence... ironically in my field working mostly with R&B and POP vocals - it's gonna get rolled off anyhow
whereas the u87 clone was clean but hollow... like it had an eternal HPF engaged... I personally felt the proximity effect helped the u87 clone... the price of the mix makes it a great podcast choice for sure
I would love to see if the mic can be paired with a preamp and what tonal shaping takes place in that signal chain

@@AyoMillz my next big audio purchase is likely going to be an interface with multiple in’s and outs so I can more easily begin using outboard gear like hardware compressors and fancy pre-amps. I should have said in the video, but the interface I’m using for all the mics here is an apogee duet, so the pre-amps are going to be clean, but it would be fun to pair this U87 clone with a preamp with a bit more character

I was wondering why there is a constant hum from my sub until you explained you got a fan running. You really need to get rid of that noise.

  • @nooneelseguy

I bought one. It is total junk. Self noise is so high that it sounds like there is a waterfall in the background. It also picks up more room than subject. The pop filter and plastic mic holder total about $3.00 of value. The mic itself is useless except as a prop for a movie. Save your money and buy anything-even a budget AT 2020 before you waste a minute on this embarrassing product.

Where is all the compression coming from? Your audio is so hot and crispy it makes it hard to evaluate the sound of either mic.

yeah for me it sounds really bad but thats just me its so harsh the blue spark sounds way better much thicker not tinny.
