Somebody please explain to me why this piece of scouse pop magic never made it beyond number 91 on the UK chart. It's absolutely criminal the lack of success these guys had.
@@BBCmindcontrol He's a top man. I've seen him loads of times live. I always loved the Xmas gigs. He's the one artist I have always bought since the 80s. You're a lucky guy.
The Icicle Works had an album called 'Best Kept Secrets' included in a compilation 'best of' CD - I often think that should've been the name of the band as still, not many people know of them, never mind recognise McNabb's genius...and that includes people in Liverpool - their loss. Get stuck into that album if you like this one!
One of their best songs! It's got everything going for it...vocals are amazing, the harmonies make the chorus and with that ride cymbal ( AKA Neil Peart), the bass and drums are so unique and in a class of their own...I'm a drummer and this drummer Chris was a huge influence...HUGE I'm so thanksful for being a teen ager in the 80's, turned 21 in 89....most will agree GREAT BAND!
Be careful what you dream of It may come up and surprise you I can't confess my life's a mess I've come to idolise you You liken it to walking on hot coals I'll keep my boots on Wisen up and fly straight There's a shape on the horizon In a hollow horse I'll steal my way Onside your guarded heart So selfishly the needs I harbour When we are apart My past strung out behind me Contradiction and disaster I'm in search of charity A union I could master We'll be as we are When all the fools Who doubt us fade away Fortune deep and wide Intimidated, restless in the wait Things I chose to value I no longer have a use for I ridicule myself for all the things Those symbols stood for When vanity has played a part In every leader's downfall Wait to storm the gates, what's left Undone to hang around for
Went to see Ian McNabb a couple of years back and he did The icicle Works back catalogue with his band and this was the final encore. It brought the house down! Such a brilliant (and underestimated) song. How it didn't reach the top 40 I have no idea.
Fantastic stuff. My past is now even more strung out behind me, contradiction and disaster, than it was when I first heard this on my car radio on my drive to work in 84. Thankyou Mr McNabb and co.

Swept along on a tide of melody and heeding the messages in the lyrics, I can only submit that 'British musical taste' had gone AWOL....just for a while.
Arguably better than their biggest song Whisper to a Scream. The riff is so good. More people probably know Whisper because if I remember it's in a Scream movie, I number 2 I think.
dont think they got their just due over here either mate....we had quite a lot of good bands around at the time..they were probably in the second tier so to speak..i always think the vocals sound like the guy out of the associates...party fears too song...see what you thihk
I suppose they fell somewhere between Tears for Fears, The Cure and The Bunnymen. They were alternative and not quite 80s big pop, very hard band to pidgin hole at the time. I love them all the same.
"dum diddly um dum dum" (Ian McNabb and Liz Kershaw, 3 Oct 2015) so what's the video again from Sep 1984 where Liz played a cloakroom attendant(?) and at the end all the band turn into china men?
This is one of those songs that sends a chill up my spine (in a good way)
Somebody please explain to me why this piece of scouse pop magic never made it beyond number 91 on the UK chart. It's absolutely criminal the lack of success these guys had.
So true
The only thing I can think of is the low rent video? It's a flippin cracking song
Because they were not good looking enough for the eighties pop (sad but true ) ?
Ian would not play their game so went alone and still out there entertaining for everyone to enjoy
No it's not.
Is there a more underrated song? Love the message of being yourself
I bloody love singing along to this. McNabb is seriously underestimated.
and still is, he's a good friend of mine

Underestimated by whom? Dumb people? Great vocals!
It's such a rousing song !
One of my all time favorites !
Wonderful, wonderful song. Wonderful 80. Of course.
The BEST Icicle Works track EVER!!!!
Quite possibly the most underrated band on the planet.
Definitely….Along with Lone Justice
How was this NOT the No1 of the decade!!!!??
I'm 68 and just came across this song in 2024. Very good.
For a three piece they were really hitting on all the cylinders with this one. This song and their first lp were just the best 80's music.

Despite living during that golden time, I am only just now discovering this splendid song❤
Still kicks arse after all this time. This track slid back and forth on the dashboard of every car I had for years.
This is a very underated epic track.
All time great chorus.
Great chorus. The kind of chorus most bands would give their right arm to write!
Left nut.............
My most favourite song of all time, ever.
Mine too!
The Band i loved during my Teen Age Days in the early 80's
One of the best songs of the decade. They were 10 years ahead of their time.
Or 15 years too late!

Seeing them on Wednesday, can't wait!

I've come to idolise you
You liken it to walking on hot coals
I'll keep my boots on
Wisen up and fly straight

In a hollow horse I'll steal my way
Onside your guarded heart
So selfishly the needs I harbour
When we are apart
My past strung out behind me
Contradiction and disaster
I'm in search of charity
A union I could master
We'll be as we are
When all the fools
Who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide

The great band. Lovely song 80s magic
Absolutely magic
They made my trips in the late 80’s from Boise State to Idaho Falls so much shorter. Thanks from across the pond.

I haven't either,it really should have!
Deserves 41 million views.
I'd forgotten about this! Ah, takes me back to student days; I've got it somewhere, probably in the garage getting damp. Epic/classic.
How did I miss this classic...
My youth comes flooding back.
Just heard this epic track on bbc radio 6. ❤️
great tune great voice- finally found this Awesome!!!!
Magical.
I haven't heard this song since I was 4 years old positively amazing.
I've always loved this song. Never knew they had a video for it until now. Thanks.
Me too I’m glad I did
Lets be honest, 80s were the begining of the end of great chart music. Stock Aitkin and Waterman saw to that. This was a breath of fresh air,.
This is beautiful, never heard or seen this before. Thank you for posting this !!!
Classic!
Man i never knew they had so many videos! This is incredible, Birds fly was my introduction to this band but this is my favorite song to sing.
Awesome is the only word x
Fantastic stuff. My past is now even more strung out behind me, contradiction and disaster, than it was when I first heard this on my car radio on my drive to work in 84. Thankyou Mr McNabb and co.
What a fucking brilliant band these are from Liverpool
Rated an oldie when I first heard it. Lucky enough to catch them live.
¡Qué gran Grupo! ¡Qué Buena Canción!, ¡Qué grato recuerdo!. Muchas Gracias por compartirlo.
Still here in 2021 & loving it!!!

First tune of theirs I heard, and my first gig at the Town and Country Club.
EPIC ! Magical ! Timeless !
I bought the 12 " version with the " live " tracks. It is magnificent.
underrated classics
Discovering this awesome piece of perfect song in 2020 ...what took me so long? :(
i luv it very much.
The 2nd verse should be the national anthem ..
Truly Great song !!
Should've been a bigger hit. It is criminal that I haven't heard this at least in my childhood. But it's a gem of a song!
Swept along on a tide of melody and heeding the messages in the lyrics, I can only submit that 'British musical taste' had gone AWOL....just for a while.
como relaja este tema y mas escucharlo en un dia de lluvia!

Blistering number. One of my favourites.
Exquisite
Give me the WORKS! 11-21
One of my top three live bands ever sin
The most underrated scouse band in music history! Nothing but absolute magic

I didn't know, really a very good song

Always nice to listen
bring it on December 10 Liverpool icicle works live
Proper tune
A classic track. That is all.
Anyone who doesn't like this and this band hang your head in shame
Beautiful song, should've been huge, but then, the English record buying public was pretty fickle in those days.
I suppose they fell somewhere between Tears for Fears, The Cure and The Bunnymen. They were alternative and not quite 80s big pop, very hard band to pidgin hole at the time. I love them all the same.
Oh wow!!!
Best song of the '80s, even better when the first bridge is full-length rather than half ...
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Cálida ésta.
thank you annie nightingale for playing this way back
a forgotten masterpiece
Puta música, puta voz
Wow this song has really aged well.
