Martin is a client of mine, I was really excited to see him finally get a signature model. Should've happened ages ago, if you ask me. I picked up synths and guitar at the same time as a kid and my guitar collection contains a Gretsch simply because of Martin. The Cadillac of guitars!
The Nashville guitar story is a scene in the Depeche Mode 101 documentary film - Martin picking up a ton of country cassettes at that shop as well… their next hit to be released the following year… PERSONAL JESUS!! Thank god for gretsch guitars and county music… they inspired Martin and a whole lot of amazing bluesy riffs that found their way into DM songs over the next 35 years
I love that scene, with the older lady behind the counter bagging up his cassette tapes and asking if he wants a “good ol country sticker” to go with them…she had no clue who she was talking to…he was very polite as he was “just getting into it”….(meaning country music) I’ve owned numerous Gretsch guitars as a song writer and loved them all, but I was definitely inspired as a 15 yrs old kid watching 101 to love these guitars because of Martin.
Absolutely! Martin Gore is a legendary songwriter and the creative force behind many of Depeche Mode's greatest hits. His ability to weave poignant lyrics with captivating melodies has earned him a place in the pantheon of music greats. Songs like "Enjoy the Silence," "Personal Jesus," and "Strangelove" showcase his genius and have left an indelible mark on the music world. Truly, his contributions to music are immense and continue to inspire fans and fellow musicians alike. 🎶
i've been listening to Depeche Mode since i was born. seeing Martin running around with his "green gretsch" live for the first time when i was a kid made me dream of a music career and being a gretsch player myself. i've always thought that he deserves a signature model because he modified his anniversary gretsch decades ago. seeing him finally get a signature is making me feel so proud. i'm really glad that he can finally be recognised as a gretsch player, not just a synth guy. the way he plays is revolutionary and had a huge influence on me and a lot of other people. unfortunately, i am left handed, and i play this way. i really wish i could get his signature but left handed😔
@@NuclearDeathWalk You know, it's a common sentiment I see certainly online, but I really feel like that's not fair. At the very least I object to the term fixed, with or without quotations. Of course Alan and Vince are absolutely brilliant and deserve equal praise to any of the other members, albeit not necessarily in the same areas. It would be fair to say that there's no question Depeche Mode's career would not have looked the same without their involvement, but, would we "not have known who Gore or DM are"? Obviously there's absolutely no saying.., so there's really no point even considering it. We must acknowledge this, though: What is (pop) music if not a song, first? Consider that, and let's reiterate that indeed Gore effectively wrote every single one - over an almost 45 year career. Add to that the fact that he's become an absolutely brilliant sound designer and producer himself, what could possibly be the point of discrediting him? Jealousy, perhaps?..
@@NuclearDeathWalkit starts with the songwriting, even Alan fully admits to how hard it is to come up with the initial melody and lyrics. From there, it’s pretty much commonplace for producers to take the demo of any songwriter and apply their magic to it, so not sure what you’re getting at…U2 wound not be the U2 without the magic of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.
Gretsch Guitars.. please rescue Robert Smith from Schecter. He deserves a truly beautiful signature guitar. Robert’s Gretsch sound and look from the mid 90s to early 00’s was superb.
dear Gretsch, thank you for this, but you really don't have to convince anyone, anyone who loves DM has a special place in the heart for your beautiful semi acoustic!
Finally, Gretsch has gotten around to honoring Martin Gore with his own signature guitar. I recommended that Gretsch do this back in 2018. What in the hell took them so long??? At any rate, I am happy for Martin. He has been a solid Gretsch enthusiast for decades, and it is nice to see him finally get the recognition that he deserves.
Martin Gore is such an underrated guitarist and underappreciated Gretsch player. Chet Atkins, Brian Setzer and Billy Duffy are all great great ambasadors of Gretsch but i think a lot of "young" gretsch players were inspired by Martin. I bought a White Falcon because of him and i'm going to get this model too. It's like the end of the circle as a guitar buyer for me. I remember when i was 12 riding my bike to a bigger town then the one i was living to buy the Depeche Mode dvd "One Night In Paris". I clearly remember seeing Martin playing "Enjoy The Silence" with this green Anniversary and in my mind i knew that THAT was the guitar that i wanted. I wanted a Gretsch. I never cared for other brands. I didn't want a Floyd rose with its "wang bar" or 7 string monstrosity. I Wanted that Gretsch sound and look. Gretsch guitars make you feel like an individual and not a cookie cutter player. If i'm a guitar player is because of Martin and if i'm a Gretsch player, it's because of him too.
underrated? Because I think of Guitar when I think of Depeche Mode. He's an average guitarist at best. Everything I have heard him play could have been samples played via keyboard. He makes The Edge look like Steve Via.
He wrote many beautiful songs and some good guitar riffs, always using nice sounds, no doubt about this, but that’s it, he’s a good decent guitarist, nothing special.
I first saw Depeche live in 1982 as a 15 year old and I have been a fan ever since. I went to the premiere of 101 at The Dominion in London in 1989 and found myself sitting a few seats away from the lads, what a great atmosphere it was that night. I didn't think they could surpass Music for the masses but Violator was their pinnacle imho. I'll get myself a Gretsch just because Martin has one....and I cannot even play a guitar! RIP Fletch, you are missed.
Martin, one of my all time favorite song writers playing one of my all time favorite guitars - a signature based on the anniversary model! I have got to find one of these in left handed. And the huge added bonus is the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave in the background!
The colour is a bit off comparing it to the one Martin posses (2-tone smoke cadillac green/lime), but it looks so dem cool :) Love it! This green annie of Martin's was my dream guitar right from the beginning! I knew nothing about guitars, but the look of this man standing with a big rn'r machine guitar was just captivating to me! I saw DM on a concert in 2010 and saw Gretsch right in front of me! Whoa, what a memorable moment! Years was passing by and I knew that pricey guitar is out of my reach so I decided to build a replica. I even started acwuiring gretsch knobs, bridge, etc, dozens of pictures and so on. And believe it or not, month ago a life time opportunity came my way. 2003 Vintage select G6118T made in Japan was delivered to my front door! I felt like never before. So happy, so thrilled, so accomplished if I may say so :)
2:05 'sometimes I don't know where songs come from' but you know they come from somewhere. Yet another great artist, musician, that taps in the that ethereal space, THROUGH music, that opens up that channel, that light. Eddie Van Halen also pointed to the sky suggesting the music comes form above, from somewhere else. So many musicians speak of this experience in the creative process. I certainly feel ideas start flowing, like a well or channel that opens, ideas come rushing in. I work fast so I keep iterating, etc. in my creative line of work.
I grew up in the '80s and, as a guitar player, I think too many people overlook Martin's contributions to that "'80s sound" that we all love. I can't imagine Depeche Mode without his riffs. They're as elegant as they are catchy. Often I wonder why this player or that one gets a signature instrument but in his case I wonder why it took so long. I will definitely be ordering one for my collection.
Super cool - and about time! I’ve been a fan of Depeche Mode & of course Gretsch guitars, for a long time. Martin seems like such a nice dude. The tones he achieved on those albums, it’s like you knew ithere was a Gretsch involved even before you saw him playing it. :)
Martin Gore's guitar playing style is both simple and brilliant, creating many memorable riffs that blend wonderfully with the synth-driven sound of Depeche Mode.
I love gretsch as a company , they're fearless with honoring outsider players for signature models , people who might be overlooked by a lot of guitarist like Martin Gore, whether you're a fan or not this looks so great, especially the pickups look like hilotrons which are awesome and unique This is a really cool model
As a Depeche Mode fan it’s great to see this! Ever since they started using guitars, this green guitar has came out in every video and concert! Its amazing
So many of us in the Dreamed of having a Gretsch. ALSO dreamed of simply seeing one in the flesh. I saw Depeche mode just to see a gretsch. I am pleased and happy for Martin and his signature model ❤
I enjoyed this interview because it’s in his own words and not been mixed up by other people doing the interview. Great to hear it all how it was in his own words. Very interesting polite gentleman.
Billy Duff from The Cult used a Gretsch Withe Falcon ....and of course Malcom Young the best rhythm guitarist off all times...Love this signature from Martin Gore one of the best songwriters from 80s and beyond
I just started my Jazz journey with a used Epiphone Wildkat custom shop (in Pearl) but my friend just got a Gretch. If i upgrade one day, it may be to one of the amazing Gretches. That color grabs you.
Props to Martin for acknowledging that Alan (And Flood) made Enjoy The Silence into the masterpiece that it is. MLG is a proper solid dude. A true legend.
nice video, kudos for mentionin' Alan, it was indeed a bit of a sensation, when Mister Gore came on stage with a guitar for the first time, because they wee a 'synth-band'.

"Waiting for the night" ist mein absolutes Lieblingslied. Durch dieses Lied wurde ich zum Fan (ja ein recht später Fan, aber es sind ja nun auch schon fast 35 Jahre). Kein Lied hat mich je so tief berührt wie dieses. Wie gesagt: er ist der BESTE!
Man, what an absolutely beautiful color scheme with the light green body and dark green pick guard. Love the sound of those pick-ups. This is now my dream guitar that I'll probably never own. To me the perfect two guitar collection is a Fender Telecaster and a Gretsch. At least I have the tele. :) Martin Gore is the man, and definitely deserves a signature guitar.

Oh my gosh.. this day should never come! Please calm us down.. you're gonna live forever.. mart!? God bless.. sorry for my english.. greets from germany!!!
A multi-talented genius. A word overused but not in this case. If you can write multiple hit songs, play more than one instrument and sing then you qualify. Fact.
I’ve got a left handed smoke green anniversary model. A Bigsby and all that. However, must say I am really jealous of this tail piece. Goes back to the old Baldwin era Roc Jet, my dream guitar
What a room. What guitar. What a man. There was nothing but peace in this video. Thanks.
I feel exactly the same. 🙏
Long overdue, very few guitarist who are as iconic with a gretch in their hands as Martin so stoked

Martin is a Legend, and yeah! I totally agree it took ages to Gretsch but it is finally here
where do you work? I wanna camp :)))
You’re not excited.
You’re delighted.
I also own 2 Gretsch guitars mainly because of Martin!
Lucky! I wish I encountered him just once to shake his hand.
What a legend. This guy wrote Violator which is still my favourite album of all time. Great tones and brilliant tunes. Thanks Martin!!
With Alan Wilder’s help of course
He did the lyrics and the general tune, the music and production was mostly Alan Wilder. Great great album

The wall of synth modules is insane. Took me a couple of minutes to comprehend what I was looking at. Very cool.
I believe I read in Keyboard magazine years ago that he collects old synths, racks, etc. I could be wrong .. I read a lot of articles in there. 😉
Are all connected? 😅😅
Absolutely. I wonder whether Martin must look at it for a while to grab the knob the thinks of, or does it still come like driven by autopilot?
@@linotaffoni2820 Actually _NONE_ of them are connected.
