Even Serj admitted in some interview that his vocal parts are hard to be performed live, as he's never had any singing lessons and is self-taught. He, for instance, said he did not know you have to count syllables in a verse, so he would speed up to fit lines like "wake up grab a brush and put a little make up" or "peter's pecker picked another pickle bearing pussy pepper" within a bar. He said it's pain in the ass to sing those rap-like vocals live as he needs to constantly look at his drummer to synch with him and not rush or drag things. He basically did not know what he was doing and experimented with his voice to make his vocal parts work. That's why his vocal style is so great and unique - it's so expressive, out of the box and intuitive. I also remember he struggled with hitting the "self-righteous suicide" high note. Nowadays he sings it just fine, but on recordings from 2001-2002 you can clearly hear he struggled with nailing that part live.
singing nasal gives you higher notes, of course he can hit these notes. But if he would take vocal lessons he could actually learn to do it with his real voice.
Serj Tankian has one of the most unique voices in all of metal. It's beautifully authentic and some what folky. It's a mix of American and Armenian style and tone. I wouldn't expect anyone else to hit it spot on.
I found System of a Down at just the right time in my life, as a burgeoning teen, when Toxicity came out. Couldnt believe the absolute perfection of that album. Serj is a musical genius.
Saaaaame!!!! And i went thw school the next day and told my freinds about this weird song id heard, and they where like "oh yeah thats system of a down their great" then ever since then been listening to them... screached about 10 songs earlier today
Devin Townsend and Mike Patton can both effortlessly do everything Serj could hope to do on his best day and much more. And they're also self taught. And while Serj is wary to perform his most extreme vocals live, those two do it in every show. Don't get me wrong. Serj is great, but he's far from the most diverse vocalist and his range isn't that insane compared to other vocalists out there.
@@sutiszorny8039 Actually, sometimes he can hit a low G sharp (e.g. in B.Y.O.B), low G natural (ruclips.net/video/tlkgbwmN9mQ/видео.html), even an F (in Streamline back vocals), although it does not sound very deep in his voice. Yes, It's not incredibly low in general but for a tenor it pretty much is. Also being a tenor he struggles to sing these notes, and even higher ones on live performances, and sometimes he sings it an octave higher
@@tomatonicolson7568 Let me get this straight. Serj is the dictionary definition of a baritone. This is just his newer technique that makes people think he is a tenor. A well-trained baritone can pull off 5th octave notes easily.
Streamline still remains one of my favorite songs I've ever listened to and the screaming at the end is one of the main reasons why! Although I love every SOAD song from Sugar, to Aerials, Deer Dance, I-E-A-I-A-I-O, A.D.D.- heck, I even love Cigaro😂 It's my favorite band! as a musical person people say im dramatic when i back up why the vocalist are so great like serj, this man has a beautiful voice naturally but then he throws these flavor bombs in and just makes soad songs go from a Copperajah class curry dish to a Charizard class
Streamline is absolutely insane because not only does Serj give it his all on the first “goodbye” at the end but then right afterwards he screams it from his soul and that’s insanely hard to do. I can only do it every now and again but the feeling you get when you do nail it is amazing.
I love System of a down mostly for Serjs vocal lines, power screams and versatility... But if you pay attention to him live, is totaly different... one thing is to create the perfect situation and conditions inside a recording studio to catch the perfect lines, but go ahead, show me what you can do live... Other thing is to use the propper technique, I do not know if Serj has some formal vocal training, but you can hear with the pass of the years that his voice is losing its beauty, from what I know, and a bit for a self expirience, that is for not making that screams and distorted vocals with the correct technique, which is not easy even if you train your voice... So yes, in part those lines are mostly impossible to achieve, without hurting your voice.
Yes. I love serj's voice, but I have noticed that his voice changed a lot, I dont know if has something to do with the fact he's getting old... I do not understand of music, but sometimes in some songs his voice sounds distorced.
Totally worth it. If he was formally trained, their music wouldn't be the same. You are not meant to go at 200 mph all through life. He had a solid 10 years with SOAD creating and their legacy is one of the best in terms of creativity, relevance and longevity.
Suggestions… after he sings “Ready for the fire” he belts out some crazy opera sounding “OOOOOH” than made my balls go back up in my stomach just hearing it. He’s truly amazing.
As a guy with a naturally high voice, this song. I can do the "OOOOH" decently, but the 2 first screams are just so high. Not to mention the "the ships are multiplying" section which is beyond most people's ranges.
Look into Darroh Sudderth from Fair to Midland. Fair to Midland was actually signed to Serj Tankian's record label for a time and is the most impossible voices I've ever heard with such a ridiculous range.
I actually love singing the end C5 of Chop Suey, I find almost bringing yourself to a cry helps a lot. It also helps drive a lot of emotion into the song. But you need to carry that note from every buildup prior in order to do it, and you still need good lungs. But sometimes I hit it right, other times I land more mellow, which still has never been a terrible sound either. But I find that the hardest part of Chop Suey is the rap areas with the whispers. I enjoy singing, and it's always fun to try a real challenge.
That's the thing though. Yes, the scream at the end of Toxicity sounds impossible to do live because it'll ruin your vocal chords, but that's the entire way many vocalists of the metal genre do their recorded studio vocals. They want it to sound as raw and emotional and powerful as they can, so they LITERALLY do it raw and emotional and as powerfully as they can IN the studio. That's why many vocalists don't sound the same live. In the studio, it's just a few takes and they're done, so they can afford to ruin their vocals to make it sound as amazing as they can, but when you do it live and have to do the same lines every single night or every other night, you wanna protect your voice as much as possible, so it won't sound as punchy. At least that's how all the vocalists I know handle themselves and their vocals
and that's where proper training comes in. With the right vocal training, you can have your screams sound raw, emotional and powerful without harming your vocals in the long run
La verdad la parte mas dificil es una parte de spiders creo que es el ultimo coro, que hace que su voz vibre y suba y baje de voz de manera rapida que es dificil de hacer, en mi opinion, creo que es mas dificil que la de soldier side
Hey mate, great video, but there was one you forgot to mention, it starts at roughly 1:46 in the song 'Sugar' on their debut self titled album. It goes 'I sit, in my desolate room, no lights, no music, just sit here, I killed everyone, run away forever, but now I'm feeling better!' the soft trills which he does in some partss and the contrast between almost whispering in one second and screaming the next is really hard to pull off. But great video, keep up the good work man, much love.
Talking about crazy metal singers, you should check out Dir En grey's vocalist, Kyo. His vocals are impressive, he goes from beautiful opera type of singing and then he can be doing some growls or screams. A stunning voice, I would say

Another scream that's not on this video, but still fits that realm was the screams in question! Though I do tend to lose control of my voice the second time.
Guess I just need to throw out that SoaD has been my favorite band since I was old enough to discern music taste. I was a musician in school and have always considered myself an impressionist. The accuracy to which I can recreate Serj's vocals have always been a pride of mine. Kinda cool to hear that they're considered exceptional examples by a trained peer.
I have been learning a lot from a mix of serj's vocals and his opera technique, rnb artists like anderson paak and sir, as well as less conventional singers like anthony green from circa survive. I find that imitating a wide variety of artists as closely as possibly really gives you a feel for the true possibilities that your own voice can achieve. I spend a lot of time studying the mechanics of the body and how it creates sound. It's kind of addicting once you start to understand the textural qualities of the human voice. As someone who is also fascinated by björk lately, I am eager to listen to her Medúlla album
I very much agree with Streamline. Sad that Serj sounds awful nowadays, too nasal. Whats worse is that he can sing normally too, he just decides to not do it for some reason.
the way he sings now is way more sustainable when you're singing for two hours a night, multiple nights a week. I think he sounds great, especially for being in his mid 50s
@@awol.oper8r No I rather have him change not a single thing about him. But yes I think its true that he is way more sustainable, but singing Heavy music without screams, not being able to move much because of back injuries, and then your singing voice doesn't even sound as good as it used to? its awful, I don't see how sounding like Squidward sounds good. His real voice is much more unique anyways. He can take singing lessons and sound as great as he used to, for being in his 50s he can sound better. Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage for example, he sounds the same if not even better than 20 years ago, and he is 51 🤷♂
@@ben1ben ironically enough, Howard had a reputation for gassing his vocals out live for years. And tbh, complaining about somebody who's committed enough to performing even through an injury just sounds entitled. Serj had some really good moments in that performance anyway. nasal resonance is a sign of proper technique. Maybe you're just too beheld to your expectations to appreciate what his voice still had to offer
okay that part in "Disooooorrrdeeeer" meant to be fry scream or anything else but he used the raw grunt, for me it hurts like hell. im not good at it but yeah i cant tell
me and some friends were seeing a system of a down tributes band SODA and ieaiaio was played and i blew my friends minds when i nailed all the fast parts
Hey I wanted to add something here since I am a technically decent screamer. For anyone out there trying to do some of the things he's doing: be warned that achieving that sound can be harmful to your voice as a whole. However on the other side of the coin, there are ways of accomplishing those sounds without harming yourself. There's a delicate balance of push/power/airflow that you have to practice. As some have said in the comments already Serj wasn't a trained vocalist so he was definitely just soulfully grabbing those sounds - but with a lot of practice and training you *can* healthily create these noises. I have also been categorized as a "baritone" vocalist but am able to reach stupidly high (peak out around B6-C6 but it's hardly usable haha), and in context with this video can hit these notes being discussed without damage. All this is to say - there's no rules, only guidelines. None of us will ever be or sound exactly like Serj, but we can rock as hard as him if we try haha
Give it another decade then you'll have earned the right to talk yourself down on your ability. Ive been doing vox for 16 years and am STILL learning new shit i can do.
Streamline Is an Amazing song, My personal Favorite on Steal This Album, who was an other Crazy Album, Underated cause Lots of people didn't even know his Existence but for me It makes me feel like they merge both the 1rst and Second album Style together in this 3rd one Before the Mezmerize/Hypnotize era
Someone who could be compared to him is Paul McCartney, he showed in his heavy and heavier rock songs that he could be a great metal singer but that was not the style of the Beatles, he also has an impossible singing segment in the song 'Oh Darling' who does the same voice distortion just like Serj xd
The vocalist that I've found really hard to sing is Joanna Newsom. She does a lot of really virtuosic large interval changes, ornamentation and grace notes, difficult time signatures and unusual chord progressions, and lots of shifting syncopation, on top of being lyrically dense, having really long songs, slurring one verse into the next continuously, changing key signatures left and right, delivering words quickly, changing intonation regularly to emphasize the story, and using polyrhythms. She does all of this while also playing the harp. There are some easier songs in her discography, but I would balk at having to perform about half of them.
Plus the emotion. I sure as hell couldn't even remember all the words to this song, let alone shred the harp while playing it and lay my heart bare, my body shaking with the exertion of the performance. ruclips.net/video/koEIfaZAvkw/видео.html

_Very_ surprised you didn't mention CUBErt or Darts. Their first album has all kinds of weirdness on it lol
Im so glad someone apprecieates Streamline's ending scream as much as I do.
That's why I love his voice 🥰
Love this one! Serj is a phenomenal vocalist, for sure!
I'm going to recommend Myles Kennedy again because he is, in my opinion, even better! 😁
There’s a part towards the end of “ Streamline “ that I love …. Nevermind… I was commenting when you talked about it 😂
Hearing the isolated part of chop suey from Serj gave me goosebumps
@@awol.oper8r maybe u right
@@ben1ben hey at the end of the day, it's still personal taste. A different perspective never hurt anybody tho!
okay that part in "Disooooorrrdeeeer" meant to be fry scream or anything else but he used the raw grunt, for me it hurts like hell. im not good at it but yeah i cant tell
@ 🤘🏻🤘🏻🎤🎤💖
me and some friends were seeing a system of a down tributes band SODA and ieaiaio was played and i blew my friends minds when i nailed all the fast parts
I was always impressed by Serj’s scream in their song “Radio/Video”
In terms of range you should feature Rishloo's singer, Andrew Mailloux, in one of these.
It would be nice to see you make the same video but with Dave Mustaine
Streamline Is an Amazing song, My personal Favorite on Steal This Album, who was an other Crazy Album, Underated cause Lots of people didn't even know his Existence but for me It makes me feel like they merge both the 1rst and Second album Style together in this 3rd one Before the Mezmerize/Hypnotize era
that second line shown from fuck the system can only be sung by absolute amateurs and amazing vocalists
the screams in question! are like impossible to do
The high E's in Question! are pretty brutal too, but I think the very end of Soil is easily the craziest thing Serj has done
Gran análisis la verdad me encanta escuchar system y oir y cantar su música tan expresiva mi favorita es Streamline sin duda para mí notas.muy altas
I was listening to Question and the ending made me think of your channel
at the spot number 1 I was like 'oh come on, where the fuck is Streamline', but then the spot number zero came
If you need a hint, when Serj does his high pitched screams, he sings inwards.
Someone who could be compared to him is Paul McCartney, he showed in his heavy and heavier rock songs that he could be a great metal singer but that was not the style of the Beatles, he also has an impossible singing segment in the song 'Oh Darling' who does the same voice distortion just like Serj xd
I'm surprised Question! Isn't on here, its beautiful to me and its fucking amazing.
Listen to the middle of the song "saving us" and the middle of "sky is over". Unbelievable. These songs you mentioned aren't even close
i came in expecting hard stuff to replicate, ended up seeing stuff that i can easily replicate. can understand why though
I still say to this day that live SOAD Serj in Detroit in ‘98 blew my fucking mind he sounded better than the CD.
Firts time on your chanel. Lover your content
I love you.
Streamline is so underrated.he never did it like in the recording (live)
I wish there was a live version damn! Love you too
The vocalist that I've found really hard to sing is Joanna Newsom.
