I appreciate Serj’s candid response about not having much hope. I think most people feel that way at times and talking openly about those fears, and even having a laugh about it, can be liberating. Saying I feel hopeless about humanity and then having a human empathize and level with you is actually helping to displace that feeling of hopelessness, because it’s proving it wrong. I often feel like we are doomed but I’m at a point in my life and journey where I think that even if that is true, I can look back on my role on this planet and be proud. Had i not been a fan of Serj and system I would have never known the Armenian genocide ever took place. I was the only person in the class that wanted to cover the topic. The most shocking part of the Armenian genocide is how well the crimes were swept under the rug and disregarded by history as time continued to pass. Serj and system are one of the only voices that were able to expose these issues on a global scale, and I have such huge respect for them for using their image for Justice and positive change. Excellent interview with awesome people.
Did you read what Hınchak and Tashnaks started systematic and backed cleansing towards Turks starting from villages and it was a part of the occupational forces project to destroy Turks from Asia Minor? Then when government interfere toward those Armenian gangs it started to be called “genocide” after years with the intervention of western lobbies. Serj is such a wonder. I remember being 16 in 2006 and living in Auckland city, always seeing some guy that looked like Serj only to find out that he was in town that summer. He even stopped by the coffee shop my sister was working at because someone told him she was an enthusiast. Such a stand up guy. If only we could all be a little more like him. Buying his book now ❤
The ending is a little disheartening. I relate to this man on so many things and he ends it with "I'm not hopeful. We need alien intervention." Sigh. Pretty much where I'm at.
I love Serj's calmness. Being a fan of both of these guys and seeing them together is such a blessing. It was such a pleasure to witness this conversation.

Twenty something years ago I was hanging out with a friend which I grew up with, he had this Sony discman which was a big hit at the time, his older brother was into heavier music and arts and my highlight of the day was hanging around at his house and being in awe by all the figurines, posters, and many other artsy stuff in his room, one day I see my friend with his discman out in the neighborhood listening and I say "whats up bro" , he's like you gotta listen to this band bro. He gave me the discman for a half an hour, inside was the album toxicity, instantly I was in love, awe, rage, and 1000 feelings I couldn't explain as I was so young and misinformed about the world, music and art. Every day I would borrow the discman as I really didn't have any money to purchase my own. I was falling asleep with Toxicity and Steal this album, I was drawn into the being and music by SOAD, one day I decided I wanted to sing like Serj and learned all the lyrics from those albums but it was really challenging to copy that amazing voice of yours Serj, I did my best and while hanging around the city park where all the metalheads, punks, and skinheads were hanging around I was playing and constantly singing SOAD songs and me and my friend were known for being the SOAD fanboys, later I started a band and was the singer in the band and my friend became the drummer, SOAD connected us and was the main reason to become artistic, listening to Johns drumming later got me into drumming and I was literally learning every song from SOAD on the drums and became a drummer, many years and bands later I'm still a drummer but I never stopped singing, screaming and expressing myself artistically, YOU and YOUR music are the main reason for me becoming what I am today, I still listen to your albums and all of your solo music and albums and take myself back to those simpler times as a kid. I never been to any concerts as we grew up in a small and poor country on the Balkans. I never watched my favorite band of all times Live and I'm ashamed by that. Rainn Wilson, when I first watched THE OFFICE, I immediately fell in love with your character and that type of humor is the most honest, brutally sincere and amazing for me, I play THE OFFICE almost everyday and laugh my ass off. I can't believe I get to watch this podcast with two of the people I respect and are one of the greatest artist of our generation. It was the easiest subscribe and like of my life and Hope to see more of this and more of both of you. MAD RESPECT for both of you and this great content you've created and are still creating. NEVER STOP. MAD RESPECT. HOPE DIES LAST.
Prayer as visualization is SUCH a powerful practice! And when the visualization is mixed with emotions like joy gratitude, and love, the thing you are praying for will almost certainly materialize!
11:35 "To have the ability to withdraw into oneself and forget everything around one when one is creating - What, I think is the only requirement for being able to bring forth something beautiful. The whole thing is - a mystery.” -Edvard Grieg Beautiful conversation.
It’s so reassuring hearing Serj talk about how he would “binge and purge on music” when he was in his formative years as an artist. That is exactly what I experience as well. I will go through a few months of heavily listening to dnb, to a few months of black metal to a few months of hip-hop, to a few months of folk music or industrial music. There is so much beauty in all styles of music and it is a shame to me that so many artists paint themselves into such a small corner when there is so much to discover and draw from within every style. I thinks that’s part of why I gravitate so strongly towards bands like SOAD, Dir En Grey and Ulver.
thats what i do, but with less genres and more specifically to different artists. I do this with TV shows also. Ive been on a SOAD kick for the last 8 months, cant put them down, the parallels in their lyrics that connect the past to the present and their entire perspective is unique and pretty much where I'm at mentally lately.
You need to meet more people man. Real people. This whole going back and correcting all the wrongs in the past that they did doesn’t make them any less more of a famous and rich person because podcasts are cool now. That’s what therapy is for. Keep it there.
Serj is such a scholar and a sage. You wouldn't expect it if you just listen to SOAD as it is, but it's another case of creativity being an outlet for all kinds of madnesses that when expressed leave you peaceful and true.
When I was in 8th grade we got an English assignment to read (or sing for extra credit) a song in front of the class and talk about the what the lyrics meant to us. I was in a fairly affluent/upper middle class kind of school and I chose “Prison Song.” I didn’t really understand then what it meant, but I knew it was heavy in more than a sonic sense. Even more than that, though, I knew it was TRUE. Some part of me was able to FEEL the RESONANCE of TRUTH. SOAD is one of the most important bands to ever exist. Thank you so much for this!!!
This is my first time ever listening to Serj in a long form conversation. I agree with him, I see no hope. But, I do feel that before we go out and try to be a force for good, we need to first and foremost work on ourselves, from therapy to working out to rehab to learning to think for ourselves. First time listener here and u truly do appreciate these conversations. Serj, I love you, bro, and thank you and the SOAD boys for stepping forward to bring awareness.
OH MY GOSH! One of my favorite musical artists, Serj! I am only a few minutes in and this is already such a beautiful conversation. ❤❤❤ Another great episode, Rainn!
Saw Sytem of a Down live for the first time ever a month ago. They had Deaftones perform before them, along with a few other openers. To say it was a life changing experience would be an understatement. I've always felt a kindred connection to Serj. I'm Eastern European, and have also gone through a spiritual journey. We see existence in very similar ways, and seeing the show live was wild. Much love to ya, Serj. Thank you both for this awesome pod 🙏💞
Amazing episode! System of a Down was one of the bands I became a fan of during my formative teenage years - I remember spending countless hours drumming to the entire Toxicity album. Great to see Serj in a good place and doing well.
Never clicked so fast!! I've listened to SOAD almost every day for the past 20+ years, even more so recently feeling angry at the world. It's so cathartic. Serj's honesty, wit and genius is incomparable! Hope to see them live in the UK one day
What a beautiful human being. It's rare that someone who astounds with their singing can mesmerise even more in conversation. Thank you both for letting us experience this with you.
I'm with Serj, I think we fix it by being better to one another. Selfishness is the true villain here, if people could just be more compassionate and forgiving to one another we'd be much better off, but; in America especially, it's a culture of individualism, where the self is the most important. Not to say that it's all negative, there's pros of individualism, but when all everyone thinks about is themselves, then nothing is going to get better.
Looking at youtube recommendations after this video is kind-of dystopian. Here we have one of the most sincere, thoughtful conversations I've ever heard in a podcast, I actually got such a sensation of release to hear two people talking with virtually no filter, without concern for their perceived idealistic affiliations. Then, the video ends and I get: THIS GUY VS. THAT GUY, This idea VS. That idea, First time reaction to X, You won't believe what happened to Y. And this makes me somewhat numb to what people, in general, have to say - it's always regurgitated ideas, second-hand experiences, fights for reason or dominance. Thank you Rainn and Serj, for being yourselves and making me feel like I was hearing actual people discussing actual ideas.
Sigh. Wish I could filter out the cheap, empty, stupid in a real way. It’s pretty horrifying to contemplate quality of content out there…and the science behind its presence makes me nauseated. This was a much needed find for me tonight. New sub!

They're just speaking my mind and thoughts!💥 I wish and hope more people realize and care about what's happening around and what we are doing to ourselves, and the whole universe, as one, and how every single of our actions even small have very massive impact on everything, and what we are doing is doing to ourselves, because everything is one. That would make the world better Thank you, Rainn, for having Serj as the guest. I’ve adored this podcast since episode one, but the fact that you got Serj? Beautiful 🖤 SOAD has helped me process big emotions since I was twelve years old. Thank you for all y’all are doing. Sincerely.
This podcast has actually changed my point of view about, basically everything, from the concept of existence, all the way towards the reductionist understanding I had of SOAD. Thank you, Rainn, a Mexican fan salutes you with a lot of respect and admiration
There's so much in this conversation that echoes the thoughts that spin through my head. Examples: What is the point of war, genocide? Why are humans so greedy? I am not hopeful (that humans will be able to change before the point of no return is reached and we cause our own extinction). It is a great conversation that outlines a scepticism that so many of us feel when it comes to hope. Personally, I see a serious attention-deficit syndrome among humans. We see the terrible things that humans do to each other and scream....for a second, or a minute...and we lack focus of speaking very long about it. We don't want to see this bad situation for what it is because if we think about it too much, we risk our own sanity or ability to lose all hope that humans can change. But we have to speak about these things with the hope that these words are heard and that some kind of change will happen. If we keep quiet, then how will change happen? All I can do at this point is keep repeating the mantra "Peace, Love and comfort to all humans", and hope that this will calm the troubled souls of my fellow human animals. I appreciate these conversations and the fact that I can hear these words of compassion and empathy for other humans, that I, too, carry with me and send out to the universe, hoping for a change. Peace, Love and comfort to all humans. You are important to me, you have great power and light within you. Let other humans know this and that they carry these gifts too.
I am a brazilian kardecist, and, even if theres no hope, I believe that in the end, everything leads to evolution. This was a really inspiring conversation! AND I BEG, BRING SERJ BACK TO ANOTHER EPISODE PLEASE
The more I hear Serj talk about what he cares about the more I admire him & love SOAD. Keep creating Serj. Keeping the hope alive, despite the niggling despair. Will keep doing my bit. ❤

RIP Connor Hayden Scott In 2010 Connor showed me Question! in his mid 90's civic hatchback. As the song was playing i was challenged by the lyrics. My ego responded in a fit of jokes and belittlements. He paused the song and we talked about the concept of death. As 16 years, old 4 days apart in age, we could not have been further apart. He brought me closer to the person I am today. I already loved BYOB, Sugar, Chop Suey, and many other of SoaD songs having learned a simplified version of Toxicity on drums. After many consecutive playthroughs of the song i was crying in front of another young man. Hoping to never experience the question of loss. The song became my favorite song within weeks and has stayed in my favorite 3 songs since. In 2014 Connor chose to find out where we go. I still ponder the meaning of the song and have come to a comfortable place knowing that my brother has traversed this path. The bond formed that day helped two young white/native men lost in the trauma of forced assimilation. I will always feel an ache in my chest but because of the profound effect of the music of SoaD, as well as other musicians and artists, and the creativity of my beloved friend taken from my life by his own action, I followed the path. I have been writing peotry and lyrics as a personal release for ten yeas come november 6th and I am better for it even with a cost so high. I would trade my growth for more conversations with Connor but i am accepting of the reality I live in. I believe in equivalent exchange. The loss of his presence spurred the growth of many who knew him. His energy remains. His love proliferated. P.S. The Rocker got me and him through some tough nights. We watched it togethed a dozen times in the 2 years it was out before he passed. As anothed commenter stated, this is an unexpected crossover, for me that of two core memory groupings that I cherish dearly. Thank you for the art that i have used to heal over this last decade. I worked with two hospice houses setting up equipment for those readying to pass for two years, using the patience and understanding gained from my own processing of my grief where many wonderful souls shared their life stories with me while i set up their last bed, where I set up various pieces of equipment to help ease the discomforts of those preparing for the transition to the otherside. I had many people, in good faith, attempting to feed my ego with complements of how my presence put them at ease. Choosing to redirect that energy, I would say many variants of "My best friend is on the otherside, and he is the one you should take these praises too. Without his brief but powerful light, I would have nothing to reflect to you. I am the moon to his sun and his light is still shining through me" I have one tattoo, that of a moon gazing ponderously at a shining sun with a column in the shape of a C with life beginning to grow anew with the light the moon reflect from the passing sun. We all are the composites of the experiences that we choose to define us. Much love to all.
Wow, as a musician/sculptor/peacemaker born in the 80s and passionate for the creative spiritual work, this is my favorite conversation ever. "Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep: DISORDER" is one of the most laden and powerful phrases I've heard in any lyrics. For me, it is the most incisive depiction of the psychological torment of mental illness. There, where there should be absolute peace and tranquility, where you are one with your very being, what you find is anguish and chaos. I'm absolutely flabbergasted that no one ever asked Serj about that line.
I think Serj has a really profound way of thinking, also he expresses himself in a very relaxing and calming soft voice. What a surprising peace of mind he brought to me! He would be such a good therapist😯

Buying his book now ❤
That's a cool story.
'90 for the win 😉
I could listen to Serj talk all day, very articulate, very calm and understanding, very just comforting.
Serj is such a strong and respectable man. He's been outspoken on a lot of serious issues since the beginning. Bless this man.
The ending is a little disheartening. I relate to this man on so many things and he ends it with "I'm not hopeful. We need alien intervention."
Sigh. Pretty much where I'm at.
I love Serj's calmness. Being a fan of both of these guys and seeing them together is such a blessing. It was such a pleasure to witness this conversation.
Honestly, knowing Rainn even KNOWS who Serj is just made me respect him soooooo much more. Incredibly based.
Rainn had this show a while back where he did interviews in a truck or something but he had serj on then and I thought the same thing. He's a big system fan
They’ve known each other at least since this interview 11 years ago:

I love how this podcast blends art, spirituality and personal journeys so smoothly. All in a casual and fun but at the same time deep conversation. Thank you for this! 🫶🏻
YES! Thank you 🙌
Twenty something years ago I was hanging out with a friend which I grew up with, he had this Sony discman which was a big hit at the time, his older brother was into heavier music and arts and my highlight of the day was hanging around at his house and being in awe by all the figurines, posters, and many other artsy stuff in his room, one day I see my friend with his discman out in the neighborhood listening and I say "whats up bro" , he's like you gotta listen to this band bro.
Rainn Wilson, when I first watched THE OFFICE, I immediately fell in love with your character and that type of humor is the most honest, brutally sincere and amazing for me,
I play THE OFFICE almost everyday and laugh my ass off. I can't believe I get to watch this podcast with two of the people I respect and are one of the greatest artist of our generation.
It was the easiest subscribe and like of my life and Hope to see more of this and more of both of you.

An Armenian Office and SOAD fan here, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the title. Thank you so much for this, both of you!

Beautiful conversation.
I've wanted to know more about serj and system for a long time. Rainn your show is fantastic. I love it. This was gem of an episode. Historical.
One of the most genuine, beautiful conversation I've ever heard.
You need to meet more people man. Real people. This whole going back and correcting all the wrongs in the past that they did doesn’t make them any less more of a famous and rich person because podcasts are cool now. That’s what therapy is for. Keep it there.
This guy... Serj... will never stop to surprise me. Amazing human being, thank you for being such a massive inspiration!
Aww, was that really better than BYOB? 😂

Serj - my first healing love ❤❤🇵🇸🇵🇸
🙏
Saw Sytem of a Down live for the first time ever a month ago. They had Deaftones perform before them, along with a few other openers. To say it was a life changing experience would be an understatement. I've always felt a kindred connection to Serj. I'm Eastern European, and have also gone through a spiritual journey. We see existence in very similar ways, and seeing the show live was wild. Much love to ya, Serj. Thank you both for this awesome pod 🙏💞
I love "flow" state. It can be accessed everywhere and is a very important life tool.
🙏
Amazing episode! System of a Down was one of the bands I became a fan of during my formative teenage years - I remember spending countless hours drumming to the entire Toxicity album. Great to see Serj in a good place and doing well.
Big deal. Most edgy teens did that. Soad is the most generic band out there for edgy teens. You are not special.
S.O.A.D. has been a staple of my life since childhood because of my mom. Brother Serj is spot on. Every moment of life is a meditation.
These interviews are so under rated. Amazing job Rainn
Does anyone else feel that Serj's voice and sense of humor remind of Will Ferrell? Such a lovely and lively conversation.
2 seconds in and yes. He kind of looks like him too now that I'm comparing them
yes it reminds me of Chad Smith
Yes like wth he sounds EXACTLY like Will Ferrell 😮
I've been keeping this comparison to myself since Step Brothers came out... glad I wasn't seeing this alone!
New sub!
Been a fan since a child. serj's voice is so unique and beautiful, truly one of a kind
excellent conv, well done Rainn. All praise the mighty SOAD!! justice for the Armenians and Pontic Greeks!!
What a combo! The depth of this conversation just carried me away... I didn't notice how I watched this until the end ... Didn't feel like an hour long convo .... Great work Rainn and mad respect Serj
His voice and the band are my Absolute favorite in the whole world. they have saved my soul & life .
So many gems just casually dropped in this episode, how beautiful! Serj seems effortlessly tactful, diplomatic, and wise.
I just watched this podcast, and I'm like, wow! They're just speaking my mind and thoughts!💥
I wish and hope more people realize and care about what's happening around and what we are doing to ourselves, and the whole universe, as one, and how every single of our actions even small have very massive impact on everything, and what we are doing is doing to ourselves, because everything is one. That would make the world better

I could’ve listened to you two talk for another 3 hours. What an incredible conversation.
Serj has been a role model since I was nine years old and it’s so great to hear him speak so openly here
I am a brazilian kardecist, and, even if theres no hope, I believe that in the end, everything leads to evolution. This was a really inspiring conversation! AND I BEG, BRING SERJ BACK TO ANOTHER EPISODE PLEASE

RIP Connor Hayden Scott
In 2010 Connor showed me Question! in his mid 90's civic hatchback.
Thank you Rainn for creating a platform where the story of our Armenian diaspora can be told

Thank you for having Serj on, what a compelling episode! I saw System of a Down perform in 1999 and I was inspired by him to do my high school senior paper on the Armenian Genocide. I have been speaking out against injustices ever since. These sort of talks are vitally important!
1:57 Finally. First time I've heard someone openly compare System to Nirvana. They were like the spiritual successor to that band, in many, many, many ways. Most overlooked comparison of the century IMO.

Thank you Serj, you are a rare case of “definitely meet your hero” ✌️
I just really love Serj as a whole... I admire him from so many aspects. I am enjoying the podcast half way I am fascinated by him. Favorite video ever!
Thank you Rainn for having him as a guest. This was a great episode. I really enjoyed it. Serj is so poetic, his words have a natural fluidity.
I think Serj has a really profound way of thinking, also he expresses himself in a very relaxing and calming soft voice. What a surprising peace of mind he brought to me! He would be such a good therapist😯
