I too agree 100%. The coach needs to coach up the team so they can play with Caitlin. Caitlin plays at a quicker tempo than the WNBA. The coach needs to coach them up. An obvious example is that she needs to instruct her players on rim running. Then Caitlin will have outlets. Some players will have the hands, speed, and ability to finish. Caitlin will then work the ball to those player while the others spread the defense. That said, I do agree with the coach that Caitlin could take more of the opportunities she gets inside the arc. I recall at least two open opportunities outside the circle that she passed up. Taking those will pull the bigs to her in the future and open up passing lanes to the post.

Sides seems to want to plug a square peg into a round hole, but the fans are not interested in the status quo of that style of WNBA play.
I had to laugh at the notion that Sides doesn't like Clark's shot selection, I wonder what she would say about Steph Curry? Sides also complained about Clark's conditioning because she got winded. Forget the fact she (Clark) just finished an entire season of college ball while the rest of the Fever were enjoying their offseason. So far, I haven't seen or heard anything from Sides that would make me think she has a clue how to use a player of Clark's caliber. If Sides wants to help her team and please the fans, she needs to build her offence around Clark's skills. Sides needs to adapt to Clark's game, if she wants to win and keep fans happy.

Look. I've had a crash course in Clark play since I got the fever back in April. Watched by now probably every Iowa 23/24 game on YT. The reason why she didn't need to run around looking to get the ball back again after she passed to Syd, Hannah and previously Monika is that 9 times out of 10 they would convert the assist (and the same with Gabbie and her sneaky corner 3s) and then it was transitioning back to defence. Boston was rookie of the year, but she wasn't converting 9/10 assists those two preseason games, and neither were any of the other players. It's not Caitlin who needs to adapt to the "better" players around her, it's the other players who need play up to the standard Caitlin is used to.
But most of all - WTF is Sides doing telling everyone in the world about this? Does she not realise that this is going into scouting reports for all the other teams? Good grief.

Realistically approaching this is normal: the coach's style vs Caitlin Clark's style of play would suggest that one is inferior to the other. Caitlin can lead a bunch of 2 to 3 star recruits with her "drive" and "passion" and on court performance to the PEAK of college basketball status: NCAA tournament championship. They should have never won against South Carolina, but they did. They shouldn't be able to beat teams like Uconn and LSU, but they did. Her playing style is highly effective and conducive of winning--the results spoke for themselves: conference championships for 3 years, 2 deep NCAA tournament runs, and an absurd amount of winning against arguably one of the hardest conferences in the country for the past few years. So, you cannot say that she is an issue when she's literally been able to produce results.
Christie Sides is a question for the fact that she has yet to prove herself capable of producing a winning culture. If she came in with "success" and "proven" results, then it'd be a different conversation. This is her only season to prove herself. You have winners on your roster, with players that have gone pretty far and found success, and then you have a couple of players and coaches that simply have been content with failure and underperforming as their career. And it is visually noticeable when you break down the games as a sample: two preseason games, for example. (We don't even need to look at the previous year, as that would be a nail in the coffin) Christie Sides, herself, made two claims/ evaluations of her team from the year before as to why they didn't make the playoffs:
    1) Her team's defense was not good enough to secure winning tendencies.
    2) Her team's offense was not good enough to make precise passes and have a team full of capable three-point shooters on the floor.
So, in the off-season, we have evidence that the team "found" some solutions in that regard: attain a player with strong experience at shooting from deep and passing and defense in Caitlin Clark as your point guard. Picked up Katie Lou as a free agent signee. Added a few veterans from overseas with high level production and experience to add to the same core players as last year. Drafted Celeste Taylor to add more versatility for defense. The team has 4 main pieces remaining on their roster:
    - N Smith is still starting at the forward spot.
    - A Boston is still starting at the center spot.
    - Kelsey Mitchell is still starting at the guard spot, and we haven't yet seen her in action.
    - Erica Wheeler, Lexie Hull, Grace Berger, Kristy Wallace are still on the team contributing as they did last year.
You literally have the same exact team except now you added a new starting forward that replaces Lexie Hull's spot and acquired two extra backups at Center/ Forward in TF and DD. Plus adding in the fact that you drafted Caitlin Clark, which is besides the point.
We've had enough evidence of all the potential pieces in action on this team, minus Kelsey Mitchell's actions, to get a gist of how the team will operate: their offense, defense, rotations, and substitution patterns within the game's duration for the past two preseason games. So, what has improved from the team concerning last year's results?
    1) Offensively: same PPG values, so far. Regular season last year was at 81 PPG.
    2) Defensively: you gave up 85 PPG, so now you've given up less so far.
    3) Bad execution in late game situations still remains, as evidenced by both games.
The expectation is supposed to be an improvement on all facets, and unfortunately the only improvement is that last year's preseason vs this year's preseason is like a 7 point improvement on offense, frankly speaking. But the philosophy for better games seems like not a serious element because focusing on "defense" in training camp is entirely shifty: your team lost games with an inability to score enough points and execution on the offensive side of the court. If this team isn't winning, then it is a reflection of coaching. They weren't capable of winning last year, and if they fail this year, then it is entirely on the coach. They have UPGRADED their roster from a talent and utilization perspective, however, if they fail to win then they have ultimately failed to live up to expectations.
    1) Boston and Smith are "supposed" to be one of the best tandems in the league.
    2) Mitchell is supposed to be a consistent scoring threat in the league.
    3) Katie Lou is supposed to be an upgrade for shooting and still adding size and defense to the team.
    4) Caitlin Clark is supposed to be an upgrade for size and length on the defensive side and a scoring threat with a better playmaker ability than whatever player is on the roster from last year.
    5) Their bench added a championship player from London, two of their starters from last year, and a couple of pieces from last year that contributed--as well as sign another big and draft a defensive player (if she's kept) to help add some pressure.
If this roster is so much more improved, then realistically you'd expect the team to have their kinks together and find some sort of success. The defense is better, in stretches when Kristy Wallace was not in the game, and used Caitlin Clark and a different guard there. The offense is not better. Boston, Clark, and Taylor are the only positive +/- box score contributions on this team, and that's alarming if your core 10 has only a couple of rookies and last year's ROY winner as their significant contribution towards winning. Maybe this is a reflection of terrible offensive sets from the coach?
If you look at their offense, then you'd notice just how poorly drawn up all of their sets are on that end. For the coach to actually suggest someone to "blah blah blah" about something when her offense is a joke, I'd be concerned. There's no way to justify turnovers on set plays like inbound plays, or bad screens, bad handoffs, bad drawn up last second shots, bad post ups that end up in offensive fouls, etc. You should have at least a dozen basic plays with movement out there, where a team can run a simple series of screens to help a player get open and shoot a simple shot. However, this team has like nothing like that. Makes you wonder what exactly has this team done during practice: besides making videos of them running around or whatnot. They can't finish transition layups, have no late-game execution from last year to fall back on, have no set plays to get others open, and clearly have no real lineup order or success at substituting their roster over the course of the game.
Looking at it logically, this team should be very good simply from the example of the two preseason games. You added better players at two positions, and that should essentially lead to more victories. Yet, you got out-coached in BOTH games from the get-go. It's painfully obvious that the coach is failing to deliver... and these interviews are far more damning since the problems aren't fixed and the coach isn't simply saying: I have to coach better and utilize my team for the success.

Coach Sides aside. The players need to learn how to play with Caitlin. Not one of these players at any level have played with a point guard that throws the ball to a spot where she expects the player to be. This is what good pro quarterbacks do routinely. This team is loaded with good outside shooters and several that have exceptional inside moves. Let the other guard bring the ball up. Then give it to CC or feed the post. At some point it will feel like the Fever is player 6 vs 5. Best passer and best shooter in one person. If Coach Sides is the wrong coach we will see it in the first 10 games.

Yes, Clark needs to work on developing a mid range shot. But what I was able to watch of the Atlanta game, Clark was not the Indiana player that needs to work on anything. In both games, it is obvious that the fever players are slow as f**k, do not move around with quality at the basket for Clark to avoid this "dancing," and the players seem to not care at times to play. When Clark had the ball at times, it looked like other players wanted to keep moving to a certain spot then look at Clark to see if a pass was already coming. They have not played with Clark enough to know timing of routs or plays so she doesn't have to wait 5 seconds for someone to get open and thus, has to do something with 2 people in her face.

However, there is a movie, One on One from 1977 that shows what can happen when a Pete Maravich/Caitlin Clark phenom type of talent gets squandered. The first game has not even been played, but it already appears Coach Sides is already reining in Ms. Clark with some very public criticism. That would be like K.C. I think the coach is under a lot of pressure, honestly. Since day one of Caitlin Clark declaring herself for the wnba, almost everyone involved with the wnba has gone out of their to either downplay her accomplishments or outright criticize her with backhanded comments. And right now, some people are trying to use the race card against Caitlin saying she's not that good and she's only getting attention because she's white blah blah. Why isn't angel Reese getting the same attention? Blah blah. Therefore, I think strides are trying to make it look like she's not playing favoritism with Caitlin, but she kind of already is except in the opposite direction. I haven't seen strides coach much, but I do know this. So far this preseason, she hasn't made public criticisms about any other player but Caitlin. Unless you're trying to tell me all those other girls on the fever played flawlessly, it does come off as biased that Caitlin is the only player she goes out of her way to critique publicly.

Pro coaching and college coaching is way different. Coach Sides made a comment about Aaliyah Boston and a few others. When CC passes the ball to AB she needs to shoot the ball not be unselfish and look to pass. When you catch the ball on a fast break get the layup don't look to pass. CC lost 7+ assist due to blown layups and passing up a easier shot.

  • @jaylesebrown7664
    @jaylesebrown7664 11 дней назад +5

The Steph Curry statement is interesting. Steve Kerr has put in place an offense that requires the other players on the floor to move in a way that creates good shooting opportunities for Curry. That is not what's happening with the Fever's offense. Sides said CC is "dancing" after the entry pass to the post and should be "setting screens" and be confident that the ball is going to come back to her. Curry's off-ball movement provides others to set screens so he can pop open with a good look.
Sides should not be openly criticizing her star rookie. Sides should not engage in throwing shade on the Iowa's coaching staff. These "habits" are part of Iowa's success of going to back-to-back NCAA tournament finals with less on court talent than their opponents. Beating powerhouses (LSU, UCONN & SC) to get there.

  • @lizzy3050
    @lizzy3050 11 дней назад +2

For me this is still their learning curve. Both CC, their coach, and teammates are still learning what clicks and what doesn't. I'd be more concerned if this is how they play halfway of the season. It's a little unfair to compare her playing with her Iowa team vs her new team and expect them gel like they've been doing it for a long time. They just played 2 games, 2. Not 2 years.
I've been a long time Spurs fan. Even getting Wemby, the so called generational player since LBJ, their team was still a disaster. 😅😅😅 So, I don't expect the Fever to just dominate the W immediately. There will be more turnovers before we start to see them kick more butts.
Tho I hope they will not give all the plays they are trying to make for her during interviews. I dunno if that's normal since I often do not watch interviews like that until now. 🤷

Sure Caitlin could score 40 points ave every game, and they potentially could end up losing a good portion of those games. I completely agree with the title of your video! It takes time for her and her teammates to learn to play together. IMO there was a little over correction in the second game, but her teammates need to understand how to catch and finish her passes. Her long shots will always be available to her, but the offense has to be much better than the Iowa offense or the first preseason game. The second game looked much better (meaning, more inclusive, since the WNBA has way too many top-tier athletes to throw at her, and her teammates are much better), but I think ultimately it will be, someplace between the first and second game. The biggest thing is if she does not pull up and hit those longer shots, then the advantage of spacing and gravity that she provides will be lost. There absolutely has to be the right balance. The only thing I do disagree with is that coach through shade at the Iowa coach, without really understanding her entire situation. She took a team two years in a row to the finals with significantly less talent and depth than a lot of other teams. This i is going to take time. 10 or 15 games, then come back and assess. In the meantime… Patience!
