    I got a RT85 last year and I'm utterly floored by how good it is. I cross shopped it against comparable offerings from Rega, U-turn, and Pro-ject, and it seemed like the best deal. You have at least confirmed I made the right choice compared to Rega, thank you.

      For the price yes, but here in the UK where it is made the price is only $379 (£299) so it's not really in the same price bracket here ! But the Fluance is still a great buy if you can afford that much !

    I think if i lived in the states id buy the Fluance but here in the UK the prices seem to be a lot cheaper plus if you buy a. Rega new i think theres a lifetime guarantee. I ended up buying a used planar 3 with stylus for £450 which looks brand new. I think Rega are now going to have to up there game with companies like fluance and uturn producing good products. They should be supplying a lot better stylus or at least making it easier to replace the old one. They seem to be changing there thinking adding the Plus 1 model with built in preamp. Good competition will hopefully bring better and cheaper products to the market.

    I am still very pleased with my RT85 and bought a second one for my living room the RT85N with the Nagaoka: MP-110. After listening to both cartridges now for some time I think I still prefer the hotter and more treble-mid heavy Ortofon Blue, although the MP-110 does have a nice warm sound. In my opinion these turntables are still the best value for the money that I've seen.

Now I just purchased the Fluance RT82 and will be swapping out the cartridge with either the Nagaoka MP200 or the OM40 super as i have some interchangeable headshell mounts. Been weighing my options upon buying the Planer 1, Pro-ject Evo, Audio Technica AT-LPW50AT, or the U-Turn Orbit Plus with some upgrades. Been leaning towards the Fluance for a week or so and getting ready to pull the trigger any day now. Your video did help me and confirmed what I was already thinking about the RT85. The Ortofon is a far better cartridge that comes on most turntables up to $1000.00 it seems, and it comes with acrylic platter. I hope that the cover pulls off easily as I see as an option with some of the other turntables. Thank You for taking the time to make this vid and giving props to the RT85.

    Until Fluance came out with the RT85 (with the acrylic platter) my only
    consideration for a future turntable upgrade was the Rega P2. Now, with
    my cartridge of choice (Nagaoka MP 110) @ $220.00 CDN and the P2 @
    $ 1,000.00 CDN - it is just way too much considering my limited vinyl
    collection. As of now, Fluance has released the RT85 with the Nagaoka
    Mp 110 at the same price as with the Ortofon Blue. ($ 634.00 CDN)
    Considering the positive reviews on this turntable - my choice is now
    confirmed.

    I was looking at the Fluance closely but the tone arm effective weight and reports/observations about the tonearm bearings having a little play put me off. The weight and hardware of the tonearm bearing assembly (its a dead ringer for similarly priced Audio Technica decks like the LP40 etc.) and interchangeable cartridge head were negatives for me. I think the only interchangeable cartridge tonearms at like a technics 1500 and above level aren't that compromised. I was moving up from a very cheap AT deck and just didn't want a dressed up version. It has a lot of features and specs on paper, but I'm sorta believer that everything has a price. If a big chunk of the budget went towards a nice cartridge, auto stop, speed change, platter, they saved money somewhere else. Plus all cartridges wear out, and you buy new ones, thats part of the fun. Just cause it comes with a nice or cheap cartridge doesn't mean you will continue to replace those with same priced ones. You can change the cartridge to taste, but its way more of a production to improve the arm, etc. So I decided to save a little cash up and just buy the next level up Rega P2, or Project X1, music hall 5.3 level of table. Something not made by Hanpin or Ya Hornq.

      Would you mind doing a short review of what you like more about the Fluance vs the LP120? I'm not getting rid of my LP120, but am considering getting the Fluance R85 as a second turntable.

    • @TBNTX
      @TBNTX 2 года назад

      @@docwells7: Sure thing.
      The A-T 120USB is a direct drive turntable with a metal platter. The motor imparted "thumping" noises that were audible in soft pages and between tracks. A-T told that the noise was coming from the DD motor as it "pulsed" the motor to maintain inertia. A-T simply dismissed it.
      I therefore replaced the A-T LP120USB with the Fluance RT85. I have NO REGRETS!
      The heavy acrylic platter matched with its belt drive imparts no noise, whatsoever, and it maintains consistent rotational inertia. For my money, it does the job very well at a reasonable price. I recommend the RT85 for anyone, especially those of us on a budget.

    You probably could not go wrong with either turntable but the Ortofon Blue cartridge may give the Fluance a slight edge over the Rega with the spherical stylus Carbon. The Blue is a really nice cartridge for an entry level table. Arm on the Rega is clearly better. Detachable headshell on the Fluance is convenient but is a compromise sonically. There are many options between $500 and $5,000. My recommendation would be to save a little more money and buy the Rega Planar 3, which will run about a thousand dollars and is the sweet spot of the Rega lineup in my opinion. The Planar 3 will take you well beyond entry level and is worth the extra $500 in my opinion.

    1- Cartridge output is not a quality indicator. Don't assume higher output, means better
    2- Yes, the Ortofon Blue, is a much better cartridge, but if your Carbon cartridge sounds really bad, it's likely worn and needs a new stylus
    3- Size and thickness of the belt, is not an indicator of quality
    4- Belt shift for speed change, is not a factor for the majority of users

    A turntable is a simple thing, it has a power supply that runs to a motor that powers a platter that your record sits on a tone arm for balance and a cartridge for the signal. Each component is important as each effects the end sound in different ways and in almost all cases they can all be removed replaced and upgraded. But make no mistake these two are entry level, cos there new and manufacturers and retails need to get paid, so if your tight on budget look for something second hand and save wasting your money lining other peoples pockets. Try and get an older Rega 3 cos I am sure you can find one second hand for the same price (or less) as a new Rega 1 and its a million times better !!

    Just another thought about this video. It appears that Fluance and Rega have dramatically different approaches to turntable design and manufacture. The Rega is made in England and has an overachieving arm with an underachieving cartridge. The Fluance is made in Taiwan with just an okay arm and a rather nice cartridge. The Ortofon Blue will probably get the maximum amount of performance out of the Fluance turntable and arm. With the Fluance, you are paying as much for the cartridge as for the table and arm. This means you will be pretty much be frozen at this level of performance. On the other hand, with the Rega, you are paying primarily for the table and arm. (I am familiar enough with Rega as a company to know that their philosophy is that the turntable and arm matter most and that the cartridge is relatively unimportant.) If the Fluance with the Blue does in fact sound slightly better than the Rega with the Carbon, it would probably take only a small cartridge upgrade on the Rega to sound better than the Fluance. My point is that the Rega is a better investment in the long run because the table and arm are superior and there is more of an upgrade path.

    • @bellisariosonic
      @bellisariosonic  2 года назад +6

      So far I upgraded the cartridge on the Rega and it still doesn’t sound as nice as the Fluance. The Fluance has a better platter. It has an auto stop rather than having to turn off the table every time on the Rega. The arm is a non issue between the two. It’s a no contest between the cartridges since the Ortofon Blue blows away the original cartridge on the Rega. Also you can actually adjust the legs on the Fluance, again Rega is lacking on so many levels. My video was to compare 2 turntables at the same price. It was never to say that if you put another 200 or 300 dollars you would have comparable tables. That being said, I would rather have the Fluance with the Blue cartridge than the Rega with an upgraded cartridge.

      @Destroythenavel 2 года назад +3

      A major problem with the Rega involves re-setting the anti-skate magnet if you upgrade to a cartridge with a different tracking weight than the factory cartridge. Doing this involves physically removing the tonearm from the deck and through trial and error readjusting the magnet and re-attaching the arm. This is a horrendous design flaw unknown to most people shopping for a turntable..

    • @armanddimeo6575
      @armanddimeo6575 2 года назад

      @@Destroythenavel Agreed. Rega apparently eliminated this feature on the Planar 2 and returned to the traditional adjustable anti-skating. The fact is that both the Planar 1 and the Fluance model reviewed here are entry level decks. The Fluance has compromises as well, such as detachable headshell and auto-return. Each person will have to decide where the best tradeoffs are for him or her. People who are serious about vinyl will go for the Planar 2 or above and preferably for at least the Planar 3.

    I'm sorry but if you do a side by side spec comparison of the Fluance RT85 vs the RP3 or RP6 while the Rega's win out they do not win out by a margin that would justify the price difference. Add the fact that the Rega's do not come with a cartridge, the price gap grows. I had the opportunity to listen to the RT85 and RP6 equipped with Regas Ania cartridge. Same record same receive, same speakers, same Ultrasone headphone's. In this area again while the Regas do sound a bit better the quality gap here is even less than the gap in specs. Sorry, but you're way too kind to the Rega. Compared to the Fluance RT85 it's a piece of crap for the money because of what you said - $65 vs $200 cartridge, non-adjustable vs adjustable feet, have to manually switch between 33 and 45rpm with the Rega, Fluance just turn a knob, Fluance has an acrylic platter...etc, etc, etc. I've had my RT85 for almost a year now and it plays just as good as the day I got it, and I've played the hell out of it. Get the Fluance, people. (Make sure it's the RT85, it's worth it, for the money there is no better turntable on the market right now.)

    • @bellisariosonic

      Also, it's much easier to change out the cartridge on the Fluance as well. I'm glad to hear it's holding up well after a year of heavy playing. Thanks for the feedback Jeff.

    • @deadandburied7626
      @deadandburied7626 Год назад +1

      I have both, the 2M Blue is better than Red, but overall is over rated. My Nagaoka 110 gives less listening fatigue, it still has the detail 2MB has, but is less bright and has better tracking. I hope to upgrade to a 150 soon. Sumiko is another make I want to try, then Hana. Big advantage of Fluances is being able to hot switch cartridge-headshell units.

    The Rega Carbon cartridge is pure snake oil! Rega has the gall to rebadge the 20 dollar AT3600L and sell it with their brand sticker on it for over 60 bucks. It is NOT a great cartridge, despite all the hype that penny-pinchers with damaged hearing make around it. The arm on the Rega P1 also has no adjustable anti-skating, so you are stuck with that junk cartridge, because you cannot mount a different cartridge and adjust anti-skating for a lighter tracking cartridge. The first Rega turntable in the chain that is a viable option with adjustable anti-skating is the thousand dollar P3. Pro-Ject and Music Hall have 500 dollar models with simple weight on a fishing-line anti-skating you can adjust, and it works well.

    • @shaunjp2211
      @shaunjp2211 2 года назад

      Firstly the anti skate on P1 isn’t an issue with a large choice of cartridge’s that will work without adjustments, I’ve done it. It’s a brilliant first hifi turntable.
      Secondly the P2 now has adjustable anti skate. That comes included with a Rega Bias 2 cartridge

    • @owenlaprath4135
      @owenlaprath4135 6 месяцев назад

      @@shaunjp2211 - anti-skating does need to be properly adjusted, otherwise the channels are off balance, and you get uneven pressure on the left and right side of the stylus. The "Rega Carbon", ie AT3600L, is specified to track at 3 ponds or 30 milli-Newton (downforce, usually misquoted in grams, which is a mass unit). Most other cartridges of better quality track between 1.5 and 2 ponds, so the Rega P1 FIXED anti-skating set for 3 ponds is way off on a replacement cartridge.

  • @yambo59
    @yambo59 Год назад

    That "Carbon" cartridge is just a thinly disguised and overpriced AT3600L the spherical diamond is the tip off, not worth $65 either you can get an ATVM95e for $65 that has an elliptical stylus. The Regh is overpriced in general, Fluance is a better value for sure

    Hi you are comparing Rega's entry level turntable which is designed for people who are buying their first turntable it's basically a plug & play setup against the top of the range Fluance and also the Rega is from England so is dearer due to import taxes. In my opinion and I'm no expert you should really be comparing the Fluance with the Rega planar 2 but in your country the Rega will be more expensive. As I said this is only my opinion.

And no matter what anyone says, tonearm is the most important thing to consider. Full stop. So I think i made a mistake going with the fluance over the rega. None of the "professional" reviews i saw on the 85 mentioned the cheapness of the tonearm which really makes me question wtf is going on. Thankfully fluance return policy is so good 😊

      Thanks for the feedback. I am not hearing the supposed greatness of the Rega tone arm. Just because a group of “audiophiles” say the tone arm is the most important component doesn’t make it so. Every single component matters. Guess what? If you have a crappy phono amp then throw it all it all out. Everything matters! Your speakers matter. Your amplifier matters. I have two complete separate systems and the Fluance RT85 out of the box sounds better than the P1, period.
