Way Out West is one of my fav. jazz records too :-) It took a long time and three different 70's US Contemporary reissues to find the "right one" for my taste : a "yellow label" with early D2 / D2 Stampers.Surprised how good this sounded. Original metalwork stamped on clean, 70s vinyl !(Good way to hear an early stereo cut without breaking the bank.) You can read a very interesting and detailed review by Robert Brook in his blog : thebrokenrecord .(WAY OUT WEST Reveals the ENDGAME In ANALOG AUDIO , February 23, 2023)

Wayne Shorter’s Blue Note recordings are truly precious and significant. It is difficult to select a favorite since all of them echo with the rich ever evolving story that is jazz music. I have an advantage having only been 18 yrs old and already almost five years in as a committed jazz fan when this album made the scene in 1969 even though it was recorded in 1967. Mr Shorter was already a clear hero for me and many of my contemporaries. We were always ripe with anticipation for his latest releases. With “Schizophrenia” we get some fine fine musical moments with Wayne and cohorts pushing the existing boundaries of hard bop. With the addition of James Spaulding and Mr Fuller in the front line he expands the color spectrum and gives us a peep into his broadening universe. Of course he and Curtis worked together with Buhaina as Jazz Messengers so they are old stablemates. Spaulding out of Naptown knows the blues and plays with soulfulness/aggression and has the credentials required to hang. Mr. Joe Chambers, is a gift in any musical setting and clearly one of the best percussionist of his generation. When you see his name on a recording you can expect depth and understanding of the Jazz vocabulary. Ron Carter and Herbie both sidekicks of Wayne’s in Miles Davis’ band(they recorded “Sorcerer” with Miles just two months after this) are masterful and really intuitive here. Go! plus Miyako are favs of mine but you can’t miss with Mr Shorter on Blue Note. He shines in every context as sideman and leader. Matthew, you do justice to the artist and thus the music. I encourage you to proceed on your journey and continue to enjoy the unfolding mysteries of the art form.

I pre-ordered the Police Synchronicity 6 CD set from Import CDs for $90. A much better value than the terribly over-priced LP set; and you get the same book in both sets. I already have an original that was pressed on a transparent audiophile vinyl and also a repress that was reissued last year. Maybe I will pick up the vinyl box set in a year or so but only if the price crashes through the floor. The Chick Corea Trilogy box set looks wonderful but that price....!

What a fantastic recording. I picked this one up 3 years ago. You chose a another good one. For me, this is easily McBride's very best effort. While McBride, in my opinion, is one the best bassist of his generation I find his work as a leader to be somewhat inconsistent; while his work as a supporting player is always solid. Like you, I typically appreciate live recordings over studio recordings. The personnel on this recording is exception throughout and they all swing hard, as you alluded to. In addition, the tunes are all excellent and if I'm not mistaken, I believe they are all original songs and no standards. Another nice segment Mathew.

Mathew, once again, a very thoughtful, informative and well presented record review. I purchased this Craft version back in November of last year. With this version, I can finally truly enjoy this historic set. I purchased a previous version of this back during the mid-seventies that is unlistenable. My 70's version sounds like someone through a blanket over all of the instruments and the record surfaces are extremely noisy and crackly. However, this new Craft version is outstanding, in that it plays cleanly, sparkles, actually has dynamics and the vinyl surfaces are silent throughout. I paid the full price for this recording ($100.00). For me, it was well worth it for a 3 album set that has been brilliantly Restored, Mastered and Packaged.

I just got this as well. I love this record, but not as much as my wife. It's her all time favorite band and album. Because of this, I've been on the hunt for the best sounding copy. So far, I have this, the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressing, the Abby Road Half Speed Master, the original US pressing and all of the 12" singles. Up until this release, I still thought the 12" singles sounded the best. But this is now my hands down favorite pressing, and she agrees. It's rich with a wide sound stage. The highs are crisp and clean. The low end is there and deep with a good punch of the kick drum, but not overpowering. I feel at least to my ears that this is the definitive copy on vinyl for this album, and am very pleased with it. Worth every penny.

Mathew, to provide exposure to new and young contemporary talent I believe is very noble. I'm always on the lookout for fresh talent, personally. This group has chops, for sure. Here's my issue with not just this group, but many young groups on the scene today, that I've been exposed to. Technically, they are extremely skilled. However, I often find the material not to be up to the same level of skill and maturity as their instrumental or playing skills. I often ask myself, with so many proven and wonderful songs to select from, why not produce an album with a combination of standards or classics along with original composition pieces. I believe new groups, for the most part, do themselves a disservice by producing an album completely filled with original songs only. Compositional skills take time to develop. Just my own two cents, for what its worth. Another engaging segment Mathew. Thanks
