Top Ten Weirdest Yu-Gi-Oh Monster Retrains (Vol. 2)

- Retrains are so common and interesting in Yu-Gi-Oh, we had to cover them again. Same idea as the last video. We look at monsters that were given an updated form later in the game and see what was so strange about them? Perhaps it was an unexpected monster chosen or an effect that didn’t really help or simply a weird design. There’s a lot to consider when looking at the wonderful world of Yu-Gi-Oh retrains. And with such a big topic, I’m joined by Judgment Meter, Corgian, Sam from Dungeon Dive Bar, Professor Oats, and SyzygySolo.

Mimicking Man-Eater Bug might ALSO be a reference to how Man-Eater Bug once got a reprint in Japan that accidentally listed it as a Warrior-Type monster. That, plus the leaf insect design, is probably why they chose to retrain Man-Eater Bug like this.

But I guess you gotta keep in mind that this was during the times where they had to either limit or ban the original IFL (which is still hilarious), so I guess this retrain was a purposeful nerf.

Transonic Bird becomes dark because the ring on its back that's being used to hold the jet is the same as Dark Simorgh's

Tbf, Summoned Skull might have a Gemini, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Toon, and Ritual retrain - but it doesn't have a Union, Spirit, Pendulum, or Link retrain yet! Let's let Summoned Skull be the first archetype to use all the summoning mechanics, he deserves it.

@@HistoryandReviews summoned skull has a bunch of upgraded versions that use a bunch of different mechanics.
It doesn't have versions of itself for ALL mechanics though, so might as well finish off that list.
Summoned Skull was the meta when it was first released which is ironic because its Archfiend brethren didn't get the same success.
It’s terrifying that little Rat was strong enough to eat Archfiend Soldier when he has 400 more Atk points
Familiar Possessed - Aussa can attack over Archfiend Soldier's DEF, so maybe he had Aussa's help taking it down.
Maybe it came back using its self-revival effect to blow up a monster you control to resummon it.
I think Gene-warped Warwolf is actually supposed to be the endpoint of Assault mercenary story, as it got genetically modified, giving it two new arms and making it stronger
Celtic Guardian will always have a special place in my heart, even if 9 times out of 10 he was just cannon fodder in the anime.

I’ll make big plans for Celtic Guardian .
Really wish Konami would make a full blown archetype of Celtic monsters like they did with the magnet warriors. There is a vast array of figures from Celtic mythology they can take inspiration from. Hell, Celtic icons are already prevalent in other Japanese media such as the Shin Megami Tensei and Fate series. I'd love to see Yugioh's take on them.
They did that for Gaia the Fierce Knight. I cannot see why Konami can't do the same Celtic Guardian.
It’s not a *monster* retrain, but one of my favorite unexpected retrains is Crossout Designator.
The original form of this card was a classic old spell card called Nobleman of Crossout, which featured a blond knight with a thin sword. It would destroy and banish a face-down monster card. And if it was a flip monster, it would banish all copies of it from the opponent’s deck.
So a decade or two later, they made Crossout Designator. A quick-play spell that features the exact same Knight (but with a more action-oriented pose), and a *completely* different effect. At the risk of elaborating on something everyone knows about now, Crossout Designator lets you banish a card from your own deck, to negate the effects of any other copies of that card for the rest of the turn. It basically lets any deck selectively deny the opponent certain cards by including a copy of that card.
The funny thing to me is that Nobleman of Crossout had a counterpart; Nobleman of Extermination. That one had an enormous Knight with a sword the size of an entire person. It would destroy and banish a face-down *spell/trap*, and banish all copies of it if it was a Trap. So I’m kinda just wonder if and when we’ll see *Extermination* Designator, and what the heck that could be.
Also, fun fact: Nobleman of Crossout has changed its status on the ban-list 8 times. More than any other card (even D-Hero Malicious)
I'm here to watch Judgment Meter defend some of these cards, and the bit during celtic guard's entry fuels me until the next MrTopTenList video

I don't think gene warp counts as retrain, looks more like art related story, as pointed out, the assault one was that character before getting gene warped. Like the art stories of servant skull ou gagagigo ou luster soldier that many different card highlights some of their charaters backstory, not necessarily related to the card effect they are illustrating.
You should DEFINITELY do the weirdest cards based on characters/events of the anime...

I like how they made Cyberdark End Dragon a card because it was so epic when Zane equipped Cyber End Dragon to Cyberdark Dragon.
fun fact every monster that gets even a moment in the dm anime will get a retrain or full on archetype. it's only a matter of time for the full swordsman of landstar archetype :)
Technically, "Landstar" is already an archetype with additional monsters and even a spell card with a swarm effect.... It's just that none of those cards have been printed, so they are stuck in "Anime Card" limbo like the remaining Harpie Lady and Orichalcos support.

You should do a list for cards with cameos of yugioh characters in the card art, some of the cool ones include Kaibaman, Absolute King Back Jack, and the Bujin archetype
How come when the guys are talking it's just normal commentary/editing/whatever, but when Meter is talking there *has* to be a cute anime girl on screen? Not complaining, it's just...odd?
Anyway, great video. Going in-depth with Japanese translations was a step beyond what I would have expected of this type of content, and it was all surprisingly insightful. Very cool!
Glad you enjoy the translation elements of the videos! I feel the original context of the cards is important to consider looking at how many of them got name changes. As for Judgment Meter, it's a running gag that goes back to 2016. She started off as the voice of a meter that used various reaction images from 2013 to 2015. When people started just referring to her as "the anime girl" and thought she sounded like a dubbed anime character, we just said "why not" and just had her be a random anime character every video to commit to the bit, including when she's not the only cohost. Then when we took away the anime character when she was talking, people asked for it to be brought back, so we kept it. The origin of the joke gets lost based on how long its been, so maybe we'll replace it with something else some day.
I think Assault mercenary is supposed to be a prequel character to Gene-Warped Warwolf. My headcanon is that he got genetic modification to try and regrow arms he lost a long time ago (hence them being cybernetic in Mercenary). BUT the procedure went wrong/overboard and gave him four arms instead of two.
Personally... I was a fan of Earth Charmer Aussa. I think it was the glasses.
One of my friends back in high school loved Aussa because she reminded him of Velma from Scooby-Doo.
I didn't know "Counselor Fairy" was an actual monster. I just thought she was the lady gatekeeping the city from "Goblin Attack Force" in "Attraffic Control".

Celtic Guard of Noble Arms has a rediculous name in English all because he's part of two archtypes, localization and cenorship.
Surprisingly I think last year or so, someone won a tournament with a Celtic Gaurdian Stall deck in the OCG!! No cap lol

I use Paranoid in My Traptrix deck on MD and Nexus a nice way to get out Upgraded Insect queen and Insect Kaiju
I use it in my Giant Ballpark deck for that same purpose

The fact counselor lily has an effect but it doesn't say effect monster and its on a vanilla card threw me off lol I thought someone was trying to rip me off .
I liked using Gora Turtle of Illusion in combination with Metalsilver armor so that it was the only thing opponent could target with spells/traps.
About warwolf, being a warrior type back when it was released was a huge difference.
I always imagined that Assault Mercenary was the past form of Gene-Warped Warwolf, because is more probable that he gained two extra arms than lost two do to genetic tests.
I dont know why I loved Gora Turtle as a kid. Maybe because it looked like the Gorons from Zelda, and i loved Majoras Mask. So seeing something that (maybe) pay homage to the game was crazy.
I think the Assault Mercenary became the Warwolf or its just his little brothe, Non-Gene-Warped Warwolf.
I think Sonic Bird sacrified someone while testing his new flying device which would excuse it being a ritual spell which means he became EVIL thus the Dark Attribute. It's my headcanon at least. He wasn't looking angry for no reason. He was currupt since the beginning.
Gora is a very good movie. I highly suggest watching it. But not as funny as the Saban comedy movies.
I am personally not a fan of retrains. Maybe we can get a video on weirdest upgrades? Like how Petit Moth becomes Larvea Moth after being tributed with Cocoon of Evolution after a few turns.
I think its more likely Transonic Bird got the DARK Attribute because there could be some stealth tech in his new jetpack. Also, I think you misspelled "corrupt". Another video idea could be a list of manga variants of Yugioh monsters, because there are quite a few examples of those cards.

Gene Warped Warwolf saw some serious competitive play in 2011 -2013.
It was the biggest normal summonable Beast Warrior and a rescue rabbit target.
Which made it very good in early Fire Fist decks as either a beater or material for their xyz Tiger King

I'm satisfied with the first place. I like the spirit charmers deck, it's very good.
Funny think there are two other monsters with warwolf in the name but it's not an arctive because there are no support cards at least not yet

My favorite thing about counselor lily is that while yes technically she’s garbage. The fact that she’s a level 3 tuner with some type of floating effect when used for a synchro summon and since Halq is still alive she’s instantly useable at the minimum for that😂

Diabound Kernal doesn't so much need a retrain as much as they need to print all of its upgraded forms shown in Ancient Egypt as actual cards IMO. They could easily make him a proper archetype just by doing that.

For me, one of my most disappointing retrains would be Glacier Aqua Madoor whose a retrain of Neo Aqua Madoor, the evolving form of Aqua Madoor, for what seems to be the ultimate water magician it's effect is very lackluster, I can understand the protection but the fact that only protect normal monsters and only for battle makes me think the Ice Barrier he conjures (also miss opportunity to not tie him up with the Ice Barriers) is not really that big of a deal, not to mention the battle effect who I think is based on the line of the original Aqua Madoor is also as useless as the first effect, kind of sad because he honestly has a cool design Like Vega(Balrog) from Street Fighter combines with Dr. Strange.
Ps: I love Yorishiro of the Aqua, that' a 10/10 retrain in my book.

As far as I can tell, the name of Gora turtle is derived from the japanese word koura which means shell. The other half of its name is a little harder to track down. Potentially it's from an obscure reading of the kanji 顔 (kao) meaning face since it's a turtle with a face on its back. The face itself reminds me of something Olmec or Polynesian.
Fun fact: in German Celtic guardians retrain is literally just called trained Celtic guardian (Ausgebildeter Keltischer Wächter)

Play Cost Down first , with it you can downgrade him by 2 levels , then set him in defense mode face down , easy peasy .
Or use Shallow Grave, it brings back from the graveyard face down defense , more easy

Transonic Bird looks surprisingly similar to Simorgh of Darkness or Dark Simorgh, with the giant rings on the back and the jet wing being black. Could this be reason he became a Dark type, much like how most Simorgh are Wind and Dark? Maybe he finally get an upgrade that makes him part of the Simorgh family now, at least apperance-wise

It was all luck of the draw. I probably drew all my starters and extenders, or you were less familiar with the deck I was playing, so it's all good! I lose plenty, too, especially when I lose the coin toss and have to go second.

In regards transonic bird, if we assume that the scientists used dark world energy it would explain why it's now dark instead of wind. This could also explain the purple glow his upgrades
I remember maha+axe of despair was pretty crazy. Also, i forget the name, maybe metamorphisis, where depending on your life points equipped monster atk points get halved or doubled
