  • This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. A sustained focus on a single motif or theme can contribute greatly to the development of the individual artist. Consider Constable and clouds, Turner and the sea, Monet and haystacks. For this series the motif will be a "Barges along the Seine". As we move week to week I hope to show how an artist develops the image and becomes more expressive as they become more familiar with the motif.
This piece was painted on 140 lb cold press, 14" x 20" using cobalt blue, b sienna, yellow ochre, .
In this video I demonstrate some strategies fro simplifying a complex image through first seeing the subject as a collection of a few tonal values, then translating that vision into a 2 color painting.
    Thank you

I have followed a lot of amazing watercolor artists of and on the internet. I started watercolor a couple a years ago and I have been trying to feel where my personal artistic expression where strongest and I always felt that less is more for me. You talk about atmosphere and that is in my heart before I begin a painting. You are a master of this ...thank you for making this art channel, it is truly an inspiration.

I found this demo very informative in a number of ways. At the end when you show the greyscale image it becomes clear just how strong the composition is. Thanks for sharing.
