- This is part one of a muti-part series stemming from a recent trip to Florence Italy along with 10 other artists.- THE DUOMO - In this demonstration I try to show how an artist takes a complex scene and searches for simplicity in shape and Tonal values. I identify a center of interest that helps me in structuring the composition and design and also helps in finishing the painting.
Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and I appreciate your comments and likes. You can learn more about plain air watercolor and all things related to watercolor please visit my website at garytuckerartist.com
I have also published a tutorial in the form of a pdf that you may download form this page: www.garytuckera...
It was amazing to see that dark shadow become transparent when you added the details. Thank you for sharing your process.
Super demonstration , as one other commentator mentioned “ the best watercolor teacher we have found “. I am very excited about the upcoming virtual lessons you are presenting.
Thx Sarah - Yes - The Paris session starts in a few weeks…
Just amazing the way that dark blob became a transparent shadow as soon as you touched inside it with a dark detail. It’s like a conjuring trick.
Great fun! Thanks.
One of the things I am doing as I continue to study, learn and discover from you, is that after watching your video several times, I actually go out and work on my “honey do” list while listening to your tutorial. In this particular case, I’m painting one of the rooms in our house, and as I do that I am just listening to your instruction and insight while the memory of your painting is still fresh in my mind. This technique gives me a chance to better understand your process. This one is simply brilliant. I am learning so much. Thanks again.
Thanks for the compliments- I think you found something quite useful ...even though I’m producing a video demonstration much of what I narrate is what’s happing in my thought process - thx for sharing!
This is absolutely stunning, beautiful how to see its build-up, and no pencil drawing as you see in most other work, amazing, thank you, Gary
Philippe, thanks for posting - I do go back and forth, some time pencil, sometimes only brush...it is interesting how that influences the approach.
Having spent some time there in Florence where a view somewhat like this was essentially my morning view as I opened the glass doors out onto my balcony, I was amazed at the way you were able to capture that incredible morning play of light and shadow on the Duomo. What was even more interesting to me was my reaction as I watched you bring it to life....watching you develop that large shadow shape was virtually the same as watching the morning sun slowly bring the building facades and the streets to life in the real. Also you did indeed capture the "feel" of the presence of the Duomo. Enjoyed this so much! Thanks!
Lovely picture of the Duomo. I really liked the light and shadow which created a very interesting atmosphere.
And the figures completed the scene giving the scale of this impressive building. Thank you for sharing Gary.
The progress and development of that huge shadow amazed me. What a lesson. Thank you.
Beautiful watercolour painting and good tutorial! Thank you for not playing the horrible "music" one hears on other art videos.
Exciting to see the Duomo develop dimension as you added detail to the shadows. Beautiful focus on the morning light and resulting shadows! Your work continues to amaze me.
Thank you for being so generous with teaching.
Beautiful watercolor, Gary - thanks for sharing your technique. The figures certainly place this glorious structure in its enormous scale.
Awesome as always👏👏👏
This is easily my favourite watercolour series on you tube thanks for sharing 👌
Really amazing. Thanks a lot. Especially for your voice-over. Helps me a lot as a bloody beginner
such a wonderful lesson on how you dance around, back and forth, and create a strong feeling of place
Your paintings are beautiful. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to learn from your experience. I'm always happy to see your new videos come up. Thanks so much for sharing your talent.
10:00 I was wondering how would he handle that massive shadow at the right, and the result is fantastic!
mind blowing art sir..thank u so much for the video
You are very good artists. Every artists is like my family member.
What brush did you use please fantastic tutorial very simple and easy to understand not done with music and no instruction
Nice work gary..
Really cool and gorgeous yeah
I drew it in one of my comic books once but would love to paint it, not sure it'll be anywhere near as good as yours though, beautiful, the problem I have with watercolour is knowing when to stop, one brush stroke in the wrong place can kill it
Wonderful painting! Amazed by the effect of shadow created by you.
Wonderful. Thanks for your precise lessons
Just beautiful, thank you for your Step by step tutorial
Thank you so much Gary.
It's beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this 😍
Thanks for this video. It was a great lesson for shading, it was very helpful.
This is a favorite.
Gary, I have a question about adding detail in the shadow. I love how it worked for you adding the detail after the shadow was already painted. When/how would you choose to do this vs glazing over the details. I have a difficult time with shadows and this would be helpful for me to understand. (PS - I am so glad that there were ample ambulances to respond to everyone's needs LOL)
Pat, thanks for your kind words. I am almost always adding detail after painting the shadow end this allows me to keep the detail sharp and strong, it also lets me paint the shadow more expressively since I don’t have to worry about losing the detail underneath. If you can be expressive with the shape of the shadow, It’s a much more striking painting.
@@GaryTuckerArtist Thank you for this explanation and insight. Now that you have explained this that makes wonderful sense about being more free in making and expressing the shadow shape and color. I love your cast shadow work! Thank you again for sharing so much of your knowledge!
Wonderful- thank you!
