I see now why I was always making this difficult on myself. I was stepping outside his leg instead of stepping inside with my support leg. great breakdown.
Wow this is great content covering many aspects of a technique order often overlooked like grips and footwork. I do not practice judo only freestyle wrestling and bjj but uchi mata has always been a favourite throw of mine. Didn’t realize there were so many nuances to the uchi mata in judo . Its one of my favourite offensive throws but also is great defensively against underhooks and great setup for other attacks. The uchi mata from Russian 2-1👌
I usually step on the outside of the leg for uchi-mata while pulling round then sweep the inside leg rather than go straight up the middle. I find the way you demonstrate a lot more challenging but then again I’m 6ft 3
Same as for some others Uchi mata is difficult/unusual, I thought that I should not use the hip, but thank you for clarifying that the hip is intended.
I'm very new to judo and I was wondering if you could change the lapel grip to a back grip when you go hip to hip or does that turn it into a different throw? Love your videos btw ❤️
Thanks for watching. Using a back grip is a good way for beginners to practice techniques like this because it provides better upper body connection, which helps you balance a bit better. The reality is that you'll mainly fight from lapel grips unless you're in a right vs left or left vs right scenario, so you need to be able to use the lapel grip for your techniques. The same is true for practicing harai-goshi and hane-goshi where you need to balance on one leg.
my favourite move after tai otochi. listen, when you try to throw and u are stuck use this move to denie the opponent last support. it's the evolution of tai otochi and arai gochi. I tried all three in combat and it safer.
Hane-goshi is hip technique while uchi-mata is a leg technique. The main action in uchi-mata comes from the tori lifting uke via leg to inner thigh connection. Hane-goshi the lift comes from the hip, while tori's leg in Hane-goshi can look like it does he lifting, it's secondary to the hip.
Efficient Judo . Yes I agree with your description. It doesn’t concur with the words in the video that say “...it comes manly from the hips.” And the leg is mainly to guide the throw. What Is presented is like a Ukigoshi (floating hip, see Kano demos) with the sweeping leg entering between. Good technique though what ever it truly is 😉. No offence intended.
Help, I keep kicking the jewels of my opponents. I'm lost on what to do with the sweeping leg (do I bend the knee as to sweep from the front to back, or how do I practice to specifically land on the inner thigh and no the jewels)
Sometimes the leg does sweep in the middle - if you are going for this style of uchi-mata, then you need to have some hip contact and lift, otherwise you'll be trying to lift your opponent by that groin with your hamstring. Otherwise you need to attack from further outside of the opponent with a more leg centric uchi-mata, like the spinning uchi-mata demo.
@@EfficientJudo That's understandable, I am looking forward for no-gi throws and will practice gi throws in the meantime :) Thanks for your content, it really helps
A great throw to make someone off balance and set them up for another throw I used this throw on my sparring partner in the clinch position, since his legs are closed I did the outside thigh kick instead of doing the inside thigh kick to throw him half way and I used the puter kepala throw to turn him and he ends up on the ground without me going to the ground with him
Not 100% sure I understand. If you mean, fainting an attack to get uke to go jigotai then actually attack as they return to a shizentai stance, then yes!
Owh ya bcuz of this lesson I remember when I was 4th grade my teacher was doing this to me but in mattras and it feels like riding roller coaster but a bit painful lol
Yes it a very valid point, in fact if you look at the kodokan classification, uchi-mata is ashi-waza. But I feel for most beginners, they have a much easier time learning the throw with hip connection. We have a number of different demo videos with more leg based variations of uchi-mata.
@@EfficientJudo thx for replying, but I really can't lift my opponent up to throw him, but during practice, I use the 'practice form' Uchi Mata, I can throw my partner to the mat.
@@jimjimjim000-.- if you can't balance on one leg while throwing uke, then you need to work on your balance. I suggest practicing Harai-goshi with an O-goshi style grip (under the armpit around the back) - do this until you are able to lift and balance on one leg.
This type of Uchi-mata (hip uchi-mata) is best suited against taller opponents. Make sure you break the balance well, so that uke is already leaning forwards. The sweeping leg can even connect with the other thigh, like in Hane-goshi.
Mirko Paragano as I know, the type of uchi mata you are saying is “Ken-Ken uchi mata ” for the right side,Ken-Ken uchi mata will be sweeping your opponent's left leg and less hip contact, the higher you can sweep your opponent's leg,the more you can get the ippon,so this technique is more suitable for tall judoka. and the hip uchi mata, which is similar to hane-goshi, will be sweeping your opponent's right leg and hip contact.
this is a very good performance. No disrespect the master, but, against taller oponent doesn't work, i so many times. Yes, if quality not equale. ruclips.net/video/0sJLbvCmwdg/видео.html
@@nenadzdravkovic950 if Kosei Inoue thought it was worth attempting on Teddy, then it probably works on taller people. He would know. But Teddy countered.
All throws require the whole body to work in unison. You need to continue using the hands to guide the opponent through the throw even when you get the lift with the leg - the hands form an important part of finishing the throw and making sure the opponent lands on their back.
What the different between uchi mata and harai goshi? Is it just where the right leg(or sweeping leg) placement? Harai goshi placed right leg on opponent right side and uchi mata placed right leg on opponent's center.
Harai-goshi is koshi-waza (hip technique), Uchi-mata is ashi-waza (foot technique). Harai requires hip action, and while we show a hip version of uchi-mata, its not strictly speaking necessary to get that level of hip contact (look at some of our demos for variations of uchi-mata with much less hip). The leg action of tori is in between the legs for uchi-mata, while harai-goshi its outside of the legs.
@@EfficientJudo ah I got it now. While uchi mata is like trippling your opponent using your leg and momentum, harai goshi use your hip to lever your opponent. Thank you for your explanation.
I assume you talking about a right vs left scenario? It's the reason you want to control that far sixe sleeve, as that's the grip that allows you to rotate uke effectively. Failing having that grip, you're relying on whatever grip to do have for rotation, but as you may have discovered, it difficult. While I wouldn't normally recommend changing a grip mid throw, you may be able to wrap up their arm as they try to post.
@@EfficientJudo Thank you for the breakdown Sensei, I’ve always had trouble understanding this throw, now I know the leg is just used as a guide and not complete leverage. When we see high level judo, they do a powerful split to guide. Insane. Always thought most of the power is generated there and not thought the rotation and hip.
It depends on you, the best throw is the one you're best at. There are technical subtleties to it, but it's more about how you set up attacks and commit to them.
For uchi-mata it can be, if the person is tall enough to be able to keep their foot on the floor as you lift. But it's not impossible - but also remember that it's about using the right technique for the right situation.
Efficient Judo you’re right. İf uke executes some of ashi-waza techniques as ko uchi gari or tori loses his balance simultanously uchi-mata can be executed but not a basic techniques against a taller opponent than you.
its so hard for me to do uchi mata because my legs are so weak so it basically gives up after a couple seconds, any tips for my problem?im still trying to do it
You need to make sure you are balanced - if you feel you are tipping over in one direction or another then it shows that your support leg is not centrally placed. You can work on the balance by practicing Harai-goshi but using a grip around the back (like an O-goshi).
Why is uchi mata called a leg technique? I have never primarily used my legs to throw anyone with uchi mata. I've always used primarily my hip to pivot the person about my hip and then sweep the person with my legs. Honestly, I have no idea on how you actually expect to get someone to completely leave both feet off the ground with just your legs. If I don't use my hips, then I'll end up doing a ten ten uchi mata(uchi mata where you're hopping, doing circles),
Uchi-Mata is a leg technique - that is its kodokan classification. I agree with you that the hip variation is probably the most used and useful, and we show hip contact in the video. But its possible to perform uchi-mata as a pure leg action without needing to hop (being taller than uke helps with this, but isnt needed). A simple example of this as a leg action would be as a counter to a kosoto. Also watch some the top level Japanese fighters and you'll see very leg based Uchi-matas - Joshiro Maruyama being an example.
Not gonna lie, I feel like the back of my thigh is hitting the groin of uke when I do this even with my support leg being deep in. I'm only able to pull off an uchimata off of a failed ouchi gari or countering a single leg.
