Great to be shown such a simple yet in-depth way of doing the traditional inner thigh version of this throw; thank you! I was first taught the spinning uchi mata, a rotating variant that hooks the other leg, and I was also already familiar with outer thigh uchi mata.
Excellent point about the utility and value of the lapel grip! It allows tori to attack with ‘conventional’ uchimata and/or transition to uchimata sukashi, and a great combination to ko uchi gari (or, for the bold of spirit, yama arashi). Outstanding demonstration of standard uchimata with excellent value for combining uchimata and other waza
I remember the first time I experienced Uchi Mata, I felt like if he let go he could have thrown me into the rafters.. I'm 60kg, he was probably 110kg.. good times
Learned many different technics but in contest the opponents mostly do the Uchi Mata.I had no good defens against it and once the leg is between my legs,i fly.I was about 1.90 cm but no much kilogram. Now im older im gaining weight so i think uchi mata dont work anymore for opponents so easy. But I left the Judo sport long ago but I shall never forget it.
Is your style boesin? If you write it this way in english, I learned everything in kodokan, and you have to keep your swinging leg straight by poinying your toes away from yourself. I just immediately noticed and wondered
In the step by step you says to sweep the inner left thigh....then when he does the actual through he sweeps the inner right thigh twice in a row. This is why folks wonder about uchi mata vs. hane goshi is it?

Mirko Paragano yes, it can work. It is harder to do against a taller opponent. If there is a significant height difference then you might want to consider a throw such as tai otoshi or a low seoi nage.
Hi Sampson, thank you for your brilliant videos, they are a huge help! I was wondering, I'm a musician and it's my career etc. I do judo twice a week and have been for about 2 months. I tape my fingers up and haven't had any finger trouble yet, is there anything else you can suggest for protecting fingers? Have you had much finger trouble during your time as a judoka?
Hi Joe, I haven't had too much finger trouble, a broken finger every so often but nothing that regular. Finger tape is the best thing as it offers support whilst still giving flexibility to train. I would also suggest researching effective finger taping techniques to make sure you are making the most out of your tape. The only other way to protect against finger damage would be to avoid grip fighting as much as you can. I am aware that grip fighting is a big part of modern judo however be selective when you go hard on the grip fighting. There is no need to go crazy every session, this way you can protect your hands as much as possible. I have also personally developed a style that generally avoids grip fighting. It may be a big thing in modern judo, but I personally do not rely on it. If there is interest, I may record a short video on this. My key bit of advise would be to listen to your body. If your fingers and hands are hurting, give them time to heal to protect your career.
Hi Sampson, Wow, thank you so much for the in-depth answer, I really really appreciate it! That makes a lot of sense, a lot of the classes I go to are early morning technical classes that end with light randori so i'm not in too much danger of getting into dangerous situations. If you ever did do a video on your style of avoiding grip fighting, that would be perfect! Once again, thank you so much for taking the time, I know you must be busy! All the very best!
Hi Awkward Cherry, It depends on what country and organisation you are with as each organisation has their own grading requirements. What one are you with?
I'm not familiar with that club, but it seems you are a member of Judo Canada (if I am looking at the right club). The best thing to do would be to ask the sensei at your club as they will know the grading requirements.
Instead of grabbing the sleeve you can grab the wrist. Or do an over hook to trap the arm. Instead of grabbing the collar you could headlock or do an under hook. There’s videos on no gi uchimata
Hi there. I'm 6ft6 and a common comment I get is to make uchi mata one of my main throws but it worries me for a number of reasons. - the common practice of diving and potentially landing on uke - how to perform it on much shorter, very heavy opponents - getting a shido in competition for committing to the throw - seriously landing on my own head as this is a story I've heard from others I'm strong, muscular, athletic and lean for my size hovering at just under 100kg and currently gaining more weight in the gym. Any help would be greatly appreciated as you mention in the video about doing a part 2.
You're strong and are feared of hurting your partners, right? Don't worry, if you feel youre falling in someone, you only land in them if you want, because is always possible roll over and mitigate the power of the throw And with time you will learn to stay stand
Love your videos but I'm 6ft 6. Coming under 90% of opponents this way is impossible due to the size difference. Particularly with O100kg shorties. Shame most BJA clubs teach it as a leg sweep with zero hip contact. But the tsurite for me has to be like Anton Geesink and modern competition with the elbow as high as possible. It opens up more entries but I still much prefer to stay on my feet than give in to just to rolling everywhere like modern judo. I hope that one day you might produce a series on misnomers, modern judo versus classical as well as high level training. I know there's a lot of politics in judo just in general but life is too short and going around on reddit I know there are plenty who want a more open debate.
I've never understood why they call the traditional japanese version uchimata. The fundamental mechanics it uses are the same as ogoshi, meaning that you use your hips to throw the opponent. If uchimata is supposed to mean inner thigh sweep, then why not perform a inner thigh sweep? To me, there are better variations out there that illustrate the principle then the traditional japanese version, which really should be a hip technique (koshi kategori) and not classified as a sweep technique.
can u do it on a regular person wearing normal clothes? lol depending so much on grabbing the GI is not gonna be practical in real life. SO much more some guys usually take off their shirts in fights. Thanks
Yes, it is very possible to do without a Gi. You can check out my 'No Gi' series to see how some other throws are done without a gi. I will also cover a no gi uchi mata in the future.
Repsaj D you can throw a person with a gi without a gi and even if that person is naked This video demonstrates how it's done and what you should practice.... And this is for the beginners People who train for years can do it without any problem
Repsaj D depends where you live also. I live in new jersey where half the year it is colder so people where jackets, jeans, and belts. So the gi is practical. Then again i try and do no gi also for the other half the year

Very nice 👍
this is fantastic. please teach me about drop knee seoi nage next time.
Could you comment on the difference between the near leg and far leg sweep? Sometimes you sweep the nearest thigh, and sometimes the far thigh?
Really Nice Channel with clean Statements ! Thank you :)
Thanks a lot. Best explination.
Thanks from Spain
Thanks Sensei! Great tutorial!

Im a white belt and can i use the uchimata during my competition if im a whit belt?Pls reply Tq
Andrew Lim yes of course you can!
In the step by step you says to sweep the inner left thigh....then when he does the actual through he sweeps the inner right thigh twice in a row. This is why folks wonder about uchi mata vs. hane goshi is it?
I noticed the same thing. I was looking for a comment that addressed that
Could you please do a harai goshi tutorial?
please more videos!!!!!
Thanks very much.
Excellent instruction, thank you.

This technique indeed is beautiful but I just can't do it...
I'll keep working on it..
That's the best way, just keep practising and focusing on the points I made and you will get there. Everything takes time and patience.
because it is wrong!
Nenad Zdravkovic how do?
@@mjolnir9855 i can teach you, but i am very far.
So the only difference between uchi mata and a hane goshi is the placement of the right leg during the throw?
Hi sensei ...
Can uchimata be effective against a taller opponent? If yes how can i execute it?
Thanks
Mirko Paragano yes, it can work. It is harder to do against a taller opponent. If there is a significant height difference then you might want to consider a throw such as tai otoshi or a low seoi nage.
Thank you, Sensei.
Makes me think of osoto Gary
im no way near ur level but wouldnt it be easier if u take ur first step further away from uke to get more kuzushi?
No, because you need hip contact to lift your opponents over 🙂
Thanks for the technique Shihan. Osu

I always get kicked in the nuts when being Uchi Mata'ed. My rancori parter is either doing doing something right or something wrong.
I've never had that happen, so something odd is going on!
@@vampsin4116you have no balls
Definitely doing something wrong 😆
I joined judo in September last year I'm still a white belt and I want to know the throws and techniques for yellow belt, please?
Hi Awkward Cherry,
It depends on what country and organisation you are with as each organisation has their own grading requirements. What one are you with?
The toshidokan judo club

Sampson Judo club yes it is Canada.
I use to do koshi nage hip throw in aikido,,,, but i think with uchi mata using leg sweep in real life is more applicable and less kuzuzi required
How can his be done when someone isn't in a gi?

Other than that, injuries rarely occurs, and shen they do they are always result of bad tecnique
Leon tan that happened to me years ago teaching my kids and he almost kill me hahahhaha
he did left and right thigh...i am confused. my sensei says to go for the right thigh, but i see everyone go for the left thigh...
Go for the right thigh and you may catch the left
Good tecnique , im black belt in judo mi sis is orange belt ,that sevre to much for her .

The point of learning martial art is to come up with your own strategy
foot sweeps and gari's are the way for you
thanks
Wait hold the fuck up... did shadow just do an Uchi Mata?
OSS! 🥋

If the throw's done with the hips then why is it classified as a leg technique?
because you use a leg to sweep. Don't you see how people end witha leg suspended in the air when they do a uchi mata?
iam your youtube Student :)
If it's hip deep then the thigh is so wide that going a little to the left or right makes no difference
