      Certainly does! I used this in the schoolyard as a fifteen year-old after only having seen it in a book on Judo. Same for collar chokes - had never done them in real life, but worked a treat. You really can teach yourself stuff out of a book, it worked for me.

    I’ve been afraid of doing this move since my teammate hyperextended his knee taking a tai Otoshi in a tournament. What’s a good way to avoid hurting uke when planting the fulcrum leg?

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  3 года назад +6

      1. Tai-otoshi is about controlling the space between uke and tori - the only contact needed is the hands. 2. So you don't need to be making contact with uke leg in any way, no leg contact, no knee injury. 3. A lot of people teach doing a pop with the leg to get uke over, but its not needed and increase the risk in injuring ukes knee.

    • @diggoryjones7837
      @diggoryjones7837 3 года назад +1

      Agree with Efficient Judo. Sometimes, keeping that slight gap between the legs of Tori and uke is difficult in a fight though, so drill making sure Tori leg crosses uke's well below uke's knee. This stops uke's foot from being trapped against the floor which is when this damage happens....

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  2 года назад +1

      You just need to find balance with your drop. It's not so much about thr exact leg position, as making space for the hand work.

    The few times I have practiced this uke has landed with a lot of all body weight on my right leg making me very worried about getting a knee injury from this throw. I know it’s hard to say what I am doing wrong without seeing me, but is this a common mistake?

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  3 дня назад

      @desr2395 It does happen to beginners sometimes. Sometimes, it is just a bad uke trying to anticipate the throw. It's hard for me to say what you need to improve on but pointing the knee downwards can make this safer for you, so they won't collapse your knee laterally.

  • @sethb6383

    hello what do you think is the best throw for a leaned forward opponent BJJ/wrestler

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  5 лет назад +10

      It depends - BJJ practitioners often stand square, sometimes weight forward, sometimes weight on their heels. If they are stood with their weight forward, throws like uchi-mata work well. If they have their weight on the heels (even though they may be bent forwards), simple kouchi / kosoto (rear throws) should be used.
      Against a good wrestler its a different game, they will generally be in more of a split stance (one leg forward) with better posture than BJJ practitioners. Assuming they are wearing a gi, use the grips to keep them away from doubles and singles, you can still use ashi-waza to threaten and set up your main throws, its as much about making them play your game than saying X throw is the best one to use against them. I hope that helps!

    Why not hip toss? This looks like if he steps over your leg in nullifies the throw.

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  3 года назад +2

      Its a completely different throw - sure a hip toss could work, but requires you to lift the opponent, commit your hips deeper, more risk of being countered by a big pick up etc. Tai-otoshi just a different technique, its down to each person to find what works best for them and understand the situations then they would be used.

    • @ASN_Alfie
      @ASN_Alfie Год назад

      If he steps over the leg he is in prime position for uchi mata, in addition, tai otoshi is one of the fastest throws, being just slightly longer than the sweeps

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  8 месяцев назад

      I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but Tori is circling around. Tai-otoshi is about managing the space between tori and uke. If Tori moves is his next to ukes left foot, then their torso will be blocking uke, preventing the technique.

    • @EfficientJudo
      @EfficientJudo  Год назад +1

      Uchi-mata is very much a leg throw, where the action comes from tori leg. Tai-otoshi is a hand throw, the leg postion of tori is just to allow themselves to get low enough, the throwing action comes from the hands. The mechanics are very different.
