    I guess you could carry water or alcohol like nail polish removers or spirit in a bottle with wipes with you on the go, to clean G-Pens after use, so you can use whenever you want but Microns are still more convenient in this scenario.

  • @iidensama

    You're using the G-pen wrong. The sideways sketching strokes you're using seem like you're trying to get the most micron-like lines out of the g-pen. The point of a g-pen is the variation in stroke width you get pulling the nib length-wise towards you in a single stroke. Though the variation is relatively subtle compared to a saji/kabura pen. See any original Dragon Ball manga (100% Zebra g-pen inked) to see what I mean. If you want micron-like lines, maybe you should try a maru pen with a heavy hand. But that might look weird for a shonen art style. I still liked the tutorial though. And the sideways strokes are certainly used here and there, just not as constantly as you did here. Hope this is helpful.

      They fade because of the graphite you erase with your eraser, you need to give the microns time to dry before you pick up with eraser or use a kneaded eraser, which is much more easier to stop fade with

      slavboobs is right, giving the micron ink time to dry helps out a lot. It also helps if you can use a kneaded eraser to lightly erase your pencil lines a bit before you start inking, so your ink isn't sitting on so much graphite. It'll bind to the paper better.

    I like the g-pen because I get good control and line variations, I've used microns for a while but I find I have more fun with fountain and dip pens. I use the platinum carbon ink (10:2 ink to water ratio) for both. I only use the microns for backgrounds of hatching in my marker drawings since I like to make the foreground stand out with line variation.

  • @Manganization
    @Manganization 7 лет назад +5

    I've used both for art classes in College (it's my country's equivalent to High School in the US), and as you implied, the G-pen is a lot more versatile but time-consuming. And it's so expensive! When doing long projects I prefer the use of Micron pens, although it is really annoying to have to switch between pen sizes and colouring in the thickness of a line. That said, my go-to size is the 5 pen, as it's the most versatile to me and strikes the perfect balance when I don't want to frequently dance between pens.
    But for short projects I'd stick to a G-pen.

  • @filiperodriguesaquin

    The tip burning is for removing the oil that comes with the nib. You know, for preventing oxidation and stuff. I prefer cleaning it with a cloth. As you said, the oil makes it harder for the ink to stick on the nib.

  • @buffruddy297
    @buffruddy297 7 лет назад +3

    If you are having troubles maintaining dip pens I suggest buying a bottle of rubbing alcohol and keeping a tissue box near by while drawing. Instead of going through the pain of removing the nib and washing with water just spray a tissue with the alcohol and clean the nib. the alcohol drys instantantly and it keeps type nib nicer longer and its faster to clean.

    Nibs are fun for art, but they are not that great if you have a tight schedule.
    I really liked the lines they give, but waiting for the ink to dry and constantly having to avoid smudging , and dripping is annoying.
    I am a noobie when it comes to using dip pens, so with practice I should get better.
    Just make sure you have a lot of white out on hand when you use a nib pen.

  • @otto8718

    How do you know if it’s dry or not do you just play Russian roulette with your drawing and rub your hand across the drawing and see if the ink smudges or not?

    I've always been afraid of inking on paper to be honest. I do the majority of my work, if not all of it digitally and do some of the sketches traditionally before bringing it onto my computer. Not only am I afraid to mess up, but I find that a normal pen just doesn't have the same sensitivity and line weight. Plus, I don't have to constantly switch pens to get thicker lines. Would you say that, for creating manga, it's better to do everything traditionally or is digital inking/colouring acceptable? Do you think it looks better traditionally? Has a better feel to it? Because I'm thinking that, when I get better at drawing bodies and hands and such, I'm going to create my own manga however, I need to know if it's okay to do everything on a program. I'd rather not start inking out some pages only to be rejected simply because I did it on Clip Studio Paint or something. XD

  • @akitahaku1447
    @akitahaku1447 7 лет назад +1

    most people burn the tip bc the manufacturers coat the tips with something to prevent it from rusting in shipment, this coating can sometime effect how the ink flows & cause it to bead up this is why some times people burn the tip, I dont bc I'm lazy and wanna use my nibs right after i get them, tho most of the time this wont cause a prob with the G nib but it can really be frustrating with some maru nibs.

  • @slantsix6344
    @slantsix6344 7 лет назад +1

    The tips of pen nibs have oil on them when they come from the factory. People burn off that oil with a match or lighter to get all the oil off so the ink flows smoothly and sticks to the nib. Alcohol works too.

    Generally people ''burn'' the tip of dip pen nibs since most (almost all) nibs come with a coating to protect it during shipping that makes it very hard to use. If you use the burning technique, then just be careful you dont burn it too much.
    I personally prefer to just put some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and removing it that way.

    I like my microns but they have the problems of fading after erasing, and they're not variable in width. another problem is you have to own alot of them, each sizes have different roles and i am already iritated by needing to buy that many, plus my pencil case is literally full.
    I never have a G-pen but looking from the video, i am impressed by the fact that it doesnt suffer from the problems such as "solid width", eraser faded and alot of individual pens needed. But its problem is just it wont dry faster, based on whyt sensei's oppinion. But i cant let myself down, i know there might be a fast drying ink somewhere out there that can dry fast..

    • @faminisim3616
      @faminisim3616 7 лет назад +3

      Sometimes, it's necessary to a story. It's a way to get people emotionally attached to characters, it could have a significant effect on future events in a story (Like a character could marry another character who has done bad things in the past and now the other character is treated badly due to his/her partner), it could bring out different personality in a character, sometimes it's a sort of relief for comics that are extremely serious or depressing. I know it can be argued that other elements in a story can do the same thing, but not in the same way. It's understandable that romance may not be everyone's favorite mainly because, like in Sonic, people don't know how to write it in the story and it ends up stale.

    Your video is really really helpful! But what about other nibs? Or is it better to use only G?

  • @asherannaart899
    @asherannaart899 7 лет назад

    I've not used G Pens but I have used dip pens. Are they forked like other dip pens? The reason I asked is I noticed your lines are splotchy like the forks in the pen crossed due to the way you're holding the pen like it's a regular pen. You might notice better results with the G Pen if you held the pen at a 90 degree angle in you hand and you use your arm to move the pen.

    The old masters of Pen drawing only used dip pens. Franklin Booth, Charles Dana Gibson, Herbert Railton etc. Pen drawings were at their peak in the 1890s.

    I really like using G-Pen though yeah they work better with deleter paperand that one is a bit more expensive, especially if where one lives they don't import that particular brand

    You should try the stabilo point 88 fine 0.4 inking marker, it is slightly accurate for manga inking, but the problem is that sometimes your grip slips then you have problems with the ink.

    Micron are good at the beginning, but as the time passes it turns grey and gets more opacity

  • @Rayan-qk2xw
    @Rayan-qk2xw 5 лет назад

    I once found a micron that was 0.03
    Still though concerning what type of pen or brush you should use, just go what is easiest for you or easiest to acquire for you as it only has a 3% role in how you draw.

    Microns for me fade really bad when I erase. Even lightly erasing takes a lot of ink away and I have to ink a piece twice using them

    • @miralis00
      @miralis00 2 года назад

      It's mostly on the paper you use.
      papers on sketchpads/books will have "tooth" on them which is basically the slightly rough texture on it's surface.
      I also noticed the fade of microns when erasing graphite on those type of paper after inking so I swapped with Vellum board 200 gsm noticed that the ink doesn't fade anymore so I made it as my primary paper.
      So basically, Less tooth/texture = less fading because the paper is smooth and without tooth the surface doesn't get "shaved" off

    Could I ask you some questions on how to effectively create your own manga? I'm in the middle of planning my own, but have hit a bit of a rough patch, it's been two years and I'm only slightly closer to the drawing stage.
    I could really use some good advice!
