I draw manga all the time but since I'm only 13 I literally just use a standard school pencil, printer paper, and a plastic ruler.
Edit: I now have a drawing tablet and I do animation, 17 now :))
Zach Wylie we all start somewhere man
Zach Wylie I'm in the same position
Zach Wylie it's a start.
Don't ever feel discouraged about your materials, if you're working hard and you're drawing, you will improve and you can still have a great time. The higher end products may have a higher ceiling, meaning that they can inherently do more, but that doesn't mean you need them, they're luxuries, not necessities. As long as you have a drawing/painting utensil and a blank piece to work on, you can draw amazing things.
I started using Charcoals earlier today and as far as tones go they're perfect for drawing black areas. The only trouble is they make a bit of a mess so you have to be careful not to smudge it too badly.

At the end of the day, you don't need all these tools, in fact, it's more about the user and less about the tool. Use what you are comfortable with. These are just tool I think you should have for best practice just in case.
Whyt Manga where did you train to draw like that

I'm an Vietnamese and those tools and supplies is very expensive and super hard to find, and the prices just breaks my heart😭
Well, you can look for alternatives. Maybe you can find another brand that works in a similar way. Personaly I don't look for brands when I'm looking for art supplies. I just look what works for me, I commonly try the ones that aren't from a popular and super expensive brand.
IDK what you being Vietnamese had to do with it but ok
@@redussop5457 maybe because the currency and availability is diffrent in Vietnam.
Not all people have the money to buy copic markers as a matter a fact they're like a life time investment so I recommend using cheaper alchohol based markers such as spectrum noir, promarkers, prismscolors, finecolors, and touch twins
Or Winsor and Newton Promarkers/Brushmarkers or Just get the Copic Ciao for a lot of the colors to use since online they're about 3.59

I'm really good at drawing, I've been drawing since childhood, but I always draw with mechanical pencils. I went through a pencil and inking phase when I was younger, but I was never too good at tracing over my work. I always wanted to be a basketball player, and I was never good enough to actually consider it as a career (don't get me wrong I can still hoop I WILL FUCK UP ANYBODY HERE IN BASKETBALL STRAIGHT UP 😤😤😤)
As of now, I'm an undergraduate in college, in a Liberal Arts College majoring in chem, I'm aiming at being a doctor or a orthopedic surgeon for sports medicine, but I wish that I just focused on drawing. After watching multiple animes, and reading the mangas of Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer (these mangas are still in progress), I've been motivated to work towarda creating a story as my second job, because I'm more motivated about it than my actual medical career or getting my M.D. During this Spring 2020 Quarantine, and ever since summer 2019, I've been drawing like crazy. I finished 3 drawing books and just ordered a new one, and I actually want and hope to create a manga. These are just sketches and gathering my thoughts, but I've actually been researching what makes a great story and I've started writing down my story as well.
I hope one day I can truly release a manga that will eventually be depicted as an Anime. TV shows impact children, teenagers, young and old, and are ways to spread messages and true meanings and deep principles about the world. Almost all stories are based on one principal moral, or are made to prove something. Telling a story is like telling a joke. It's just knowing alm the pieces of the joke, and putting it together slowly from the base up until the audience gets the joke.
you went through 3 sketchbooks! I only went through one. Yesterday i went to buy a new one and they were sold out, now i draw on printer paper until there are new sketchbooks.
I'm only in Highschool, but I really want to start a manga aswell! I've been developing this one story since I was 12 and I've always loved writing/brainstorming stories, anime, and manga. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck :)
Woah !!! Just read your comment and that's just insane the way we both almost have the same story. I started drawing from the first grade and I'm so into drawing. I like basketball too I play pretty well. I'm a M.D. and wanna go further to specialize in cardio thoracic surgery. I like being a doctor but I feel like missing something since I really wish to hit the top and spark making a great manga something that will be labelled as a masterpiece . I wanna beat Eichiro Oda manga-wise. Oh that sounds unfeasible. I'm from Cameroon in Africa. And I'm writing a big story now along with the script. By the end of this year I aim to have my first chapter published.
Im in 5th grade ang im planing to make a manga in summer break
I also draw comics and things like that, but I'm only 13, so the only good supplies that I have are the sakura pens. Everything else is like cheap school supplies.
Youre 20 now. Did you get yourself some more supplies??
Hey Buddy, you inspire me to keep drawing even when I don't think my work is good enough. Also to experiment with different styles to find out what works for me. Thank you and keep it up.

That one Asian guy At some stores you can get Micron pens for 5 bucks a set.
Phantom Howlett Mihachels sells them for $6 U.S. dollars from where I live
You really don't all this have good paper, micron, inks, brushes And pencil
I've been doing comics for a couple of years now, and I'm finally doing one that will be a big project, thanks for this video itll help me
it's been a while since you made a video about digital toning, digital tips and tricks ,i'm sure i'm not the only one who would like to see those types of videos again, thank u.
I watched a video on skillshare about inking with a brush and the instructor made a suggestion on how to fix mistakes by take a box cutter or an exacto knife and scrapping the ink away. That only really works if you're using a thick paper though.
I want to get into drawing as I have to much free time now that I started a new job and i love creating things
thank you so much for this vid :) it helped explain a lot abut tools. i used to use only pencils and normal pens to draw but i now use micron and pen liners as well. its a wonderful vid to help beginners move forward in what supplies they will need after pencils.
Personally I prefer Copic Multiliners more than Sakura Microns I like that they have smaller sizes
All artists need to look up the term “tool box fallacy”. It has held me back more then anything
One thing I definitely learn in this video, is that I have the freedom to do whatever I want
for those who don't have/want/like the 0.5 lead,
using lead holders for sketching is okay since they won't show up in print.
using 0.9 lead for very thick lines and 0.7 for light sketching can also be used as an alternative.
this is a lot of help
im 11 yrs old and every year i buy some copic markers and i hate it when other artist say that i dont deserve it dont get me wrong im always open to critisim but when people say stuff like that i feel unmotivated😥
E11 is the best skin tone marker for me
I love your work! Your videos have helped me immensely improve my artwork and I just bought Apple black! I can’t wait to read it! Thank you again!
I've been watching a lot of videos like this, it's great 😀
Copic markers are so expensive though.. say goodbye to dreams of getting the biggest set 😂
There are alternatives...not great but it will suffice
Nyla Mark Oh I know. I got a set of Touch markers^^ There's plenty of videos of people showing cheaper alternatives
Irma-C ☆ blick markers suppose to be a good alternative to Coptic until you can afford he copic
Copics are overpriced as HELL!

Yeah, Copics are really overpriced outside of Japan, where they're a little under $4 a pen.

If you want to make amazing art maybe try digital. The two free apps for the phone or tablet would be medibang and ibispaint. You can make amazing art with your fingure or you can maybe save up and bye a stylus to draw on the phone or tab from Amazon. I use a "Adrawpen" sometimes for my digital work. If your using a computer you can download medibang, crita, or firealpaca all are free to download I personally use medibang the most just because I'm the most familiar with that. Your going to need to buy a drawing tablet if you want to use a computer for art. You can try using a mouse but it's going to be more difficult. Hope that helps.

Can you tell me how long it takes for you to complete a manga page? Do you use reference while creating a manga page?
chrisbernard15 like 2 hours for me. I really like to draw an amazing scenes in a short period of time.
chrisbernard15 99% of all manga work is referenced. Not because people aren't imaginative or are bad and forced to use pictures off the Internet, but because you can't draw something without seeing it or something similar. You can't tell someone to draw the eifful tower if they haven't seen it, can you?
Now, when it comes to making pages, that depends on the style. For a very realistic or really detailed manga, it can take anywhere from 3-4 hours going from scratch, some even longer. If it's a less realistic, more cartoonish style, it usually takes around 2 hours. This may scare you, but it is necessary to achieve your goals
very true! Using references can be extremely helpful in creating realistic scenes/poses =)
Aaron Arjona where can i find your manga
... You do realize the work that goes into a professional manga page, right? Sketching the page may take 2-4 hours. Inking, screening, dialoge, and color for special pages. Your looking at a days work for a page of professional work. Manga artists in Japan churn out 17 pages a week, but that is with 2-3 assistants working full time and the main artist working 80+ hrs a week. Overall 6-8 hours a page split up among different people.
All I have is a pencil, eraser, printing paper, cheap color pencils, sister’s Prismacolor markers ( I doubt that she gonna let me use it) and cheap mechanical pencil.
So how much does this cost? Cause I REALLY WANNA be like you, drawing is my passion but since i saw youtube videos with draw supplies I quit with the drawing because I really want these tools to but... My family and I are not really that rich 🤦🏽♀️

Hey what about those use a pad to draw is that still good enough? Because I honestly digitally drawing felt alot smoother for me once I started. At first was like "Oh hell no, I can't do this! Nuh uh! Nope!" Then after 1 in half week later, I couldn't stop drawing. In fact, I seriously kid you not, drawing digitally made my traditional drawings feel so much better! I was freaking the hell out about how much my art style changed because of one week! Mostly thanks to WhytManga for the tips. But besides that I hope that its still okay to draw manga even though its digitally.
