    OMG!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!! George and Ryan you are sooooo awesome!!!!!!!! love you guys!!!!! :D
    it's definitley a song that will grow on you. It's a mosh song for sure... This song in particular was a poke at Perry Ferrell (Janes addiction) who used to used the pose for fame. Grunge was a movement that Soundgarden started in 1984, at least they were the pioneers that started the movement though Nirvana made it famous. It was also a reaction to everything that was taking place in the 80"s such as all the hair metal bands.

      The song is absolutely meant to be unsettling. The juxtaposition of the vocals against the music is just this side of offensive. I think it is meant to capture the raw and dirty feeling of someone using religion for power and fame (I always took it to be TV evangelicals rather than Perry Ferrel but the point is similar). The song is very powerful and has a lot going on. It is a lot to take in at first but the more you listen to it, the more you’ll dig it. Soundgarden is an amazing band. Even if you don’t review it, you should strap on your ear goggles and listen to ‘Like Suicide’ to catch a different perspective. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are the standouts of the Seattle grunge scene for me.

    To answer your question about grunge, bands like this came along after years and years of commercial hair metal (Bon Jovi and the like) and these bands were darker, more introspective and more raw. It’s a little more intellectual, less commercial and just more real, IMO. The big four of this movement were Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice In Chains.
    Other than the fact that they are all from Seattle, they don’t have a ton in common musically. I think the thing that they have in common is more an attitude than a sound. They were carrying on the tradition of their 70s influences in their own raw, organic way, while the mainstream bands of the 80s were more slick and commercial. To me, Soundgarden is Led Zeppelin, Alice In Chains is Black Sabbath, Nirvana is the Ramones and Pearl Jam is like a cross between Neil Young and Springsteen. Those comparisons are not perfect, but I feel like each of those bands carries on the work of those respective influences and takes it in new places.
    Awesome that you guys did Soundgarden, but this isn’t one of their more accessible tracks. There are probably others you guys would like a lot better, particularly from the album after this one, Superunknown. Nonetheless, it’s awesome that you guys listened to a viewer and did this. Now please do some Queens of the Stone Age!!

      I think one thing Grunge bands have similar to one another is the vocal style of having a raspy, kinda unfiltered voice, and the style of the songs often having a mellow verse, with melancholy vocals, and then a heavy chorus with stronger, raspier vocals

    Chris Cornell is in my opinion the most versatile vocalist of all time. There are probably 10 other Soundgarden songs that if you guys heard you would instantly recognize. And in most of them he sounds like a completely different vocalist due to his versatility. I would recommend checking out "show me how to live" by his other band Audioslave. Or "dead wishes" from his final solo album. Definitely more accessible songs to hear from the one of the greatest (the greatest) rock vocalists of all time. Cornell's catalog is endless.

      @@NoBody-tf7ib not at all jealous. i love chris cornell, laways have, dating back to when i first heard soundgarden's Hands All Over in about 1989 or 90.
      um, but when people use the V word, mike patton is the FIRST and LAST name i think of amongst rock genres vocalists. and here's the thing: nobody should ever be upset that their favorite guy is seen to come up short in that area. MP is ridiculous with his range (not just vocal range, but his STYLISTIC range, with the fantomas stuff and mondo cane material...i mean, italian love songs?).
      as i say that, i also know this: mike patton would NOT have been as perfect a fit for soundgarden as CC. same goes if pearl jam or AIC or nirvana had needed a singer. MP could DO IT, obviously, in terms of skill, but his vocal stylings and attitude was not really meant for the down-low dirty sludgy grunge.

    Grunge is essentially (described by the musicians themselves as) punk rock meets classic metal. It IS definitely relatable to depression and despair. It's mood shifting and mood relating. We wouldn't exactly mosh to it. There's usually a lot going on in grunge I.E. Soundgarden, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains. It's meant to just be listened to and soaked in. Some of the most melodic music of our generation. And, I mentioned LA bands as well as Seattle bands because the music style was from that era, not just the location. Although Seattle is obviously the catalyst for it due to its dreary and gloomy climate, all they did was play music in a basement. The main philosophy of grunge music is not to be cocky and think you're better than anybody. Or even good enough. HUMBLE

  • @sarcastanaut
    @sarcastanaut 6 лет назад +35

    Don't get hung up on what "grunge" means. It was just a joke word up here in the Pacific Northwest that got used as a marketing term. That's really all it is. A bunch of bands influenced by punk, metal, 70s rock and 60s garage rock. And beer.

    so i grew up in the scene in Seattle, which was very much metal around that time, grunge was more underground, Soundgarden is not really grunge per say but they just have the sound of Seattle which was a mixture of metal, Punk, and slow grinding music like sabbath. they got pegged as grunge because of the time period. This song is talking about the hipocracy of the religious perspective in my humble opinion

      You've kinda got to ease people into new music. Everyone wants to tell them to watch/listen to the hardest song from a band - instead of picking one they might actually like. That's the problem with metalheads in general, they want to act like everyone is a "poser" if they don't know everything and only listen to the heaviest of the heavy... that's corny macho shit... it's way easier to get someone outside the genre to appreciate it by breaking them in slowly with songs they like, then they'll be more willing to listen to the harder stuff.

    Soundgarden being one of my favourite bands of all times makes it hard for me to process ppl not being blown away by it. That being said I can totally get your reaction and really appreciate your perspectives. If you give Soundgarden another chance I think something off of Superunknown might be more up your guys alley... possible "The Day I Tried To Live" I think that might do it.

    I love watching you guys struggle to understand and enjoy something like this. You're so humble and analytical and unencumbered by knowledge of the conventions of rock music and metal and punk. When you talk about the fact that the musical elements don't mesh well together for most of the song and then at that moment that the rhythm finally changes around 9:45 in this video, THAT is the release that the song has been building to. It's been teasing you this whole time to make you crave that one change. And when you hear songs like this, or Tommy The Cat by Primus (on one of your previous videos) I'm so entertained by the fact that you can't really relate to the idea that musicians would intentionally create dissonant music that does not please the ear. But many musicians do this, not in a cynically calculated way, but just in a "when we get together, crazy things happen, so let's keep doing it!" kind of way. And we don't give a shit if anyone gets it or not. It's unsettling and fun and dangerous to be part of that creative process. But when that sweet release happens of a really catchy memorable break in the middle, it's the golden hour! And also bear in mind that the physical nature of rock music has a lot to do with how people play these songs, and how the crowd gets into a hypnotic state while seeing it live.

    One of my top 90s songs.
    The opinion I’ve always held about this song is that it is intentionally discordant and jarring, and lends to a more intense transition to that heavy fast 70-second breakdown you loved so much.
    I’ve often claimed that’s the greatest 70 seconds they ever recorded, but that’s just me.

Actually, they have pointed out stuff in songs I heard a bunch of times before but never really noticed or thought about. • @thetranya3589
      @thetranya3589 5 лет назад +2

      This is exactly correct. "Grunge" was never a movement or anything close to it. It's just a term some greedy music industry POS used to describe the music that put their putrid LA hair metal clowns out of business. If you want to get a better idea about what was going on in the Seattle music scene back in those days I highly recommend the movie "Hype!".

  • @darrylhurs
    @darrylhurs 5 лет назад +1

    Soundgarden was about meshing sounds together usually dissonant with a lot of tension. Chris used his voice as an instrument within it all. This song was massive when it came out - the drumming is intense throughout and seeing Matt Cameron play it live is incredible.
    You saying you are processing it is exactly what they were about - they make you think about their music. You almost have to listen to some of their songs three times to process it. In my opinion, its usually the songs you don't like right away that you fall in love with. Try listening a few more times and you will hear the complexity of the layers.

    Probably not the best song to introduce people to Soundgarden but they have an unorthodox style for sure. Chris Cornell was one of the most talented vocalists and theres songs that much better showcase that talent. He was so special.

    To understand Grunge, you have to understand the hard rock climate of the late 80s. So many bands during that time were producing music that was about girls, partying, or the rock and roll lifestyle in general. No substance. Thrash metal came as a reaction to that, but really wasn't very radio friendly. Grunge was another reaction to that, but their sound was a little more approachable (although, to be honest, I just thought of Soundgarden as metal back then before they came up with this grunge label). I do, however, distinctly remember thinking that there was some hard to define aspect to the music, and it took me a while to realize that the subject matter had a lot to do with the distinction. I believe it was Pearl Jam that, upon winning the award for best Grunge album, said something like, "I didn't know we were a grunge band. I thought we were a rock band." I may be wrong on that. Anyway, what really set them apart was that suddenly we had songs on the radio again that were actually about something! A bullied kid taking his life in the classroom ("Jeremy"), depression, isolation and ostracism ("Outshined", "Man in the Box", etc.) And then their appearance REALLY made a separation, and probably had the most to do with the label. Where as bands like Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, and Warrant were shellacking on the makeup and hairspray, these guys came out in combat boots, cut-off camos and plaid shirts. They looked "grungy". Hope that helps. Alice in Chains would be another great band to get into. Personal favorite off their first album is "It Ain't Like That". Now THAT'S a grungy tune! And "Slaves and Bulldozers" would be a better Soundgarden song to feel the grind of grunge!

    • @caryballard7857
      @caryballard7857 6 лет назад

      Well said, but I think your story about Pearl Jam winning best Grunge album may be getting confused with Soundgarden winning a Grammy for best Metal performance. They went to accept the award and said the they weren't a metal band, it was pretty damned funny.
