@@luka243 Definitely. I think it's about his Layne's drug use and his struggles to get clean. The lyrics are quite interesting and as a Christian, can be hard to hear. Sober by Tool is another one.

The song is about Censorship whilst using the concept about Christ and Us obeying his father as authority and the only way to him is jesus. In other words the only way out of government Authority (wich put us in a box) is if we wake up as individuals and stop worshiping the politicians word.(wich means we have to rebel against them, but what God's word forbids us doing)
It's also about Animals/babyCalf being trapped and raised into small boxes before they ended up being slaughtered. that's where Layne got the idea for the song's name when they were at lunch with some vegetarians once in the early 90s.

Layne said he was really stoned when he wrote it so I belive it definitely has to do with his view on Jesus himself.
About Layne's addiction? Ha, well every other song is about addiction tbh or it has a part where its mixed in their songs

The song refers to a photo of Jim Morrison. It won't be hard to find the pic, its iconic. That is where Jesus Christ Pose came from.
You nailed the interpretation. Chris was sick of the hypocrites thinking they were better than others. He struggled with hypocrites until the day he left us. Chris was a good soul and his music helped many through difficult times.

One of my all time favorite singers. Loved him in audioslave. One of my favorite passages comes from the song light my way.

Made me take a look at every song and listen closely, truly he was a genius.
Soundgarden always gets lumped in with grunge.....but they are clearly on the heavier, metal side of the spectrum.
Patrick Penix....They are classified “grunge” as they are from a music movement and fashion from Seattle, one of the big 4. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. All bands are very different in style of music. If grunge is a music type, I guess it’s alternative rock with some metal...Nirvana is punk rock and Pearl Jam is more rock/hard rock.
Ive always thought of grunge as more of a sub-genre of punk. Nirvana and Pearl Jam definitely lean more towards the punk spectrum but Alice In Chains and Soundgarden clearly lean more towards metal.

Definitely not metal. You can't get lumped in with something you created. They are grunge personified.
Why get wrapped up in labels. Its rock, as is "metal" "punk " "grunge ", so what? As Billy Joel said "its still rock and roll to me". Listen outside the label box and enjoy powerful soulful rock.
You guys nailed the meaning of this song. They took a little heat for this song when it was released. Could you do Motörhead God was never on your side? It poses some very good questions for you to dig into. I think the questions really allow a thoughtful way to bring out the gospel message in your answers.

Badmotorfinger was actually their 3rd album . But yeah it’s this album that blew up for them around the same time as Nirvana with Nevermind and Pearl Jam with Ten

'Badmotorfinger' was Soundgarden's 3rd Album. Pretty Sure. It went: 'Ultramegaok', 'Louder Than Love', then 'Badmotorfinger'. Basically. But? BMF was where they started to jetset. Started really getting popular, getting on 'Headbanger's Ball' on MTV, taking off.
Wasn't there an album called SuperUnknown? Or is that just a single? Or is that from a different band? Or or am I completely Mandela effecting it? Lol
@@FilthTribeFTP No! Ha! Yeah. 'SuperUnknown' was their 4th album. Very good album. Amazing Album. 1994. They got even more successful w/ that album. 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Spoonman' were 2 big hits off that record. And? Ya know? One can be a Christian and listen to that album w/o feeling? It's just an album about life. As was most their material. Life Is Life. Yeah there's some drug/ alcohol reference but? That's a part of life too for many people. Superunknown is a fantastic album.

I remember a friend giving me this blank cassette. He just told me to listen to this as loud as possible. Needless to say, there was nothing like this on the radio at the time. This was pre Nirvana bomb. Sonically, this was so loud.

One of the hardest songs to sing. PERIOD
I think the "Would it pain you more to walk on water than to wear a crown of thorns, it wouldn't pain me more to bury you rich than to bury you poor" is in reference to the ego of celebrities. They love to be admired for their achievements/miracles, but don't like to suffer (Crown Of Thorns).
It's certainly less painful to be admired and treated as a God than to suffer public rejection and mockery. Then, in the second line, Chris is reminding them that it makes no difference in the end- rich or poor, they will be buried.
Death is indifferent.

This can be applied to this day and age and celebrities in Hollywood for example preaching to people about their beliefs. It is easy for them to feel a certain way from their gated community in a bubble from the working class etc.

Great reaction, guys! This album has always been my fave of theirs. Much heavier feel than their later stuff. Chris' vocal range is always incredible, but this song in particularly to me.
This song was written specifically about perry farrel from janes addiction. It was chris criticizing how perry would Jesus christ pose on stage all the time.

I really like your channel, for a multitude of reasons but ill list a few;
1. You guys do alot of bands I love.
2. I am christian, but that being said, I generally don't pay attention to lyrics. But I do like finding out what the songs are actually about, and also a biblical perspective on the lyrics is appreciated.
3.This one is personal, my dad was my best friend, there was no one I looked up too admired or loved like my dad.. he was always there for me, and we had a great relationship as a father and son but also a great friendship as I became an adult.. this past year I lost him to an accident as he was attempting to save a man from drowning, and didn't make it back to shore...all that to say that I enjoy your relationship with your son and the bond you guys have, reminds me of me an my dad.. we talked about music.. i thought him to play guitar, he taught me many things in life and was always guiding me.. but i really enjoy watching you guys.. keep up the awsome work.. i think alot of people across the spectrum of belief or non belief enjoy this content.

Hey whats up you guys. I enjoyed watching your reactions to these music genres. I grew up with these music and still listen to date. Its wonderful to hear how a christian views our choice of music unlike others that automatically label it as evil. My family grew as a christian but i never was. Still you guys are some of the most I respect when it comes to these cause you review with open mindedness. I still remember my dad breaking my CDs just cause someone screamed or drums were too fast.

I remember the day that I bought Badmotorfinger. I bought the album because of Rusty Cage, but as soon as I heard this track... it was the standout to me. Not from a lyrical perspective, but from a groove standpoint. This one of their tunes EVER! Thanks for analyzing it and breaking down the lyrics.

Chris grew up going to a small Catholic school, so was steeped in those teachings as child.
Creed was exactly who I thought of when they were talking about music artists and their Jesus Christ pose! About 6 years too early to actually pin them but still they did it just the same.

Saw them at the Paramount Seattle on this tour and saw them with Janes Addiction, and Love and Rockets a few years earlier. Tremendous sadness when he decided to complete his life. His voice is scorching the sky with the Seraphim now. They made it big with LOUD LOVE before BMF. FOPP Is bad ass too. it the best for me is ULTRA MEGA OK. I love what your are doing. I am technically a Catholic Christian(do not practice, more atheist) but I am a fan of music and fascinated by the theological perspective you bring to music. I would recommend a song from a band from Québec(note that Quebec was very Christian before we started to become more atheist but we still feel the religious influence in alot of our music) the province where I live. The song is in French but if you want it would be a pleasure to translate it for you. The song is from the band "Beyond creation" and is named "Sous la lueur de l'empereur" which mean "Under the glimmer of the emperor".

I love music and poetry and have loved Soundgarden for quite some time... naturally I dissected and understand the idea behind the poetry and meaning shared in their art...
People need not judge others for their choices in faith.
I used to be an atheist/ agnostic in my beliefs because so many others were trying to push faith on me in the way the felt it should be. Some feel more righteous than others and feel they are right and want to preach to others as though they have some divine right. Perhaps some share their beliefs for good reasons, or good intentions, but I feel some react negatively because of religious oppression. I am religious in many ways toward God, yet have not been given much insight into the Bible due to my running from religion. I am tired and need to go bed... lol

About big dollar artists hypocrisy in using religious symbols as a way to paint themselves as somekind of martyrs or saviours, mocking them and asking direct question "do you have the balls like Jesus to sacrifice your life and fortune for others ?". Trivia: Chris was raised in a Christian school, then he went agnostic and when he married his second wife, he converted back to Christianity.

I remember this song coming out when I was in high school. It seems to me that he was railing against many of the tele-evangilists that were so prominent back then, Swaggart and Jim Baker to name a couple.
this song is about people with big egos feeling like their presence is a gift he never cared anything about religion
The song is more or less how celebrities are "worshipped" like religious figures. Sometimes you'd see celebrities standing with legs together and arms straight out to the sides, akin to Jesus on the cross. So it's not about religion directly.

Ah man, this is easily my favorite soundgarden track. Because I've had this type of hypocrisy thrown at me though my life. It took years to learn to just walk away from those people.
The appearance of Jesus in the movie “ Passion of the Christ” is spot on. Jim Cavaziel has maybe a tiny bit of light brown make up on. Most pictures I see of Jesus look this way too. Ancient Egyptian art also depicts this.
