I'd argue you should've listened to the full album version. There's an entire intro that they cut out of the video for some reason, and it's absolutely beautiful
Phil had two friends kill themselves when they were all just kids in New Orleans. He wanted to write about it, because it helps him, but he thought it would be disrespectful to write a song about his friends, and he thought that it wouldn't be a song anyone would want to listen to, so he wrote a song about a guy who lost a girl who he built his whole world around. He thought it would be more applicable and accessible to others. This song is ultimately about finding a way to move forward through grief and finding a way to live after loss that feels so vast there is no way you can imagine living afterwards. It's a positive song. Unlocking your door and passing the cemetery gates is opening your heart and carrying on.
Phil also has a band called Down. The first album is NOLA. New Orleans, La. initials. Pantera is from Texas. Phil is from Louisiana. Down has a lot of great musicians like Pepper from Corrosion..you all know this though, right? Like Crowbar..etc. Anyway, Phil never quit playing. He did say that what happened with Pantera was his greatest regret. Everyone hated each other, and it shouldn’t have been that way.
@@joloj23 Phil and Rex both went on to Down, so they never hated each other. Vin and Dime were brothers and they went on to form Damage plan and they never hated each other. Rex, Vinnie and Dime were still ok. There was some ill will between Phil and Vinnie/Dime which started sometime after Phil's addiction got pretty bad and communication broke down. Phil was hurting in every way a person can hurt and said he needed time off after the events of 9/11 canceled the remaining leg of tour for the Reinventing the Steel. He said he'd get his back fixed, but he worked on Superjoint instead, and Vin and Dime said he quit talking to them. Vinnie and Dime said in interviews that they felt stifled creatively in Pantera, and after, just waiting for Phil to get it together, and that's why they formed Damageplan. They- all four guys- decided to do their own thing for a bit, and then things went sideways. I wouldn't say anyone hated anyone. They were family. They fought like family does sometimes. They said mean things to each other, like family does sometimes. Both sides publicly trashed the other, and I'm sure they all regretted it, eventually. Had Dime not been killed on the first Damageplan tour, I have no doubt the two camps would have eventually come back together. Rita said recently that Dime had been expressing regret about leaving Pantera and fighting with Phil before he died. We all know that Phil kicked his habit to have his injury fixed in November 2005 (11 months after Dime died, and four years after what would be Pantera's final tour), which did, in fact, put him out of commission for most of a year while he healed and learned to walk again, like he said it would. We all know that he loves Dime and Vinnie and Rex. We all know Dime loved Phil and Rex and his brother, Vin. Had Dime not died, Vinnie would not have held such a grudge against Phil, nor would he have a reason to want to avoid Phil. Seeing his brother murdered, and losing his brother in that way must have hurt Vinnie in such a profound way. It was all so tragic and unfair. Things would have gotten better, if there was time for the relatively minor wounds of squabbling to heal. They needed time away from each other to grow and breathe and figure things out, but they didn't get it because the murderer took that from them. Life's that way, sometimes.

When my cousin's husband tragically died at the age of 56, the pastor presiding over the funeral gave a sermon on why sometimes God takes away our loved ones at a time we seemingly think is too early. May be the best sermon I ever heard.
I've always interpreted the song as one of living through grief, but making a promise to eventually accept the death and move on with life. "Unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates" is not going in, but going out from being virtually locked in and living in the cemetery and trying to cling to a life that has passed. I'd lost my brother through suicide and never thought this song to be about that, even after that happened. Over the last year I’ve listened to Pantera’s “No Good ( Attack the Radical ) A song rejecting racism, gets me going , mad and crying as I listen again . 20 years later still still true …” in the states we have a problem with race…” Please take a listen ….. And yes Dimebag is the man !
Thank you!! That was always one of my favorite songs from AVDOP! So underrated, great riffs and an excellent coda. And thoughtful, intelligent lyrics to boot.
I was always of the school of thought that "pass the cemetery gates" was him leaving the cemetery to go live his life, and the door was locked by his inability to let go of her. He made a promise to her that he would live, for both of them.
This song is in the same playlist as Fade to Black from Metallica and How Can I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today by Suicidal Tendencies is in. They are darker songs lyrically but the music is so beautiful it lifts my soul for some reason. They have been songs I turned to when feeling down (especially when I was younger and out in the world). Now that I'm older and a follower of Jesus, I turn to him for everything and have not been as down as I was back when I was in the world. That said, these songs still lift my soul because the music is still beautiful. I thank God they were made because they saved my life many a times when life was at its darkest back in the day.
I remember that song when I was a teenager and I never really paid much attention to the lyrics. I knew it was about death, but I guess I never realized that it was that deep. I've always liked that song, and now I see it in the new light.
Pantera and Metallica, the 2 greatest metal bands to ever exist, now and forever. Metal music that you both listen to and feel in your soul. And remember, if it's too loud, you're too old 🤘
The music video version sucks because it cuts out about 2 minutes of Dimes beautiful guitar playing, in fact about 2 full minutes. I lost my Fiance and I was learning this song on guitar at the time. This song has a lot a personal meaning to me. I sometimes change certain lyrics tho. He said, " Believe the Word " I say, He will unlock the door to pass the Cemetery Gates. The Word is Jesus. I changed a few more lyrics too. In the yeay 2010, I saw the Dean Dimebag razorback Cemetery Gates signature guitar. My Fiance said he was going to buy it for me for Christmas that year. He even taped a picture of it on my bedroom closet door. Unfortunately, he passed away on December 4th, 2010. So I was devastated. This was the only song I listened to for 3 years. More recently the Dimebag estate sued Dean Guitars and they weren't allowed to make them anymore. I decided I better buy one before I couldn't get one anymore. I kept looking on Reverb and finally found one in mint condition from Texas. Coincidentally it was delivered on December 4th.

Society has made a hundred sub-categories for metal, and most of the time I scoff at it, but Pantera being labeled "Groove Metal" couldn't have been more right. Their music grooves.
Please do Altering the future by Death! Thanks guys, love the content
I’m surprised you haven’t reacted to Oh, Sleeper. Listen to Son Of The Morning.
You guys should do Hollow

Yeah bro agree!
Hollow! Do it!
Thank you so much for yours and Gage's reaction Pastor Bob...I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts. What a cracking song. I really dig your channel. Looking forward to your next reaction. God Bless. Love and peace 👍✌️🤘☮️✝️
Pantera is amazing and Dimebag was one of the greatest to ever touch a guitar!!! #GetchaPull
Over the last year I’ve listened to Pantera’s “No Good ( Attack the Radical )
A song rejecting racism, gets me going , mad and crying as I listen again . 20 years later still still true …” in the states we have a problem with race…”
Please take a listen …..
And yes Dimebag is the man !
Thank you!! That was always one of my favorite songs from AVDOP! So underrated, great riffs and an excellent coda. And thoughtful, intelligent lyrics to boot.
I had a friend who thought there were different guys doing vocals on each album😅
I was always of the school of thought that "pass the cemetery gates" was him leaving the cemetery to go live his life, and the door was locked by his inability to let go of her. He made a promise to her that he would live, for both of them.
Such a great song.
RIP Dime and Vinnie
Finally
Can you guys do Keeper of the Seven Keys or 2 Minutes to Midnight. Both awesome songs that I think you would enjoy
Please react to Rapture by Hurt.
I will continue to request this. I have been since your Judith video.
I would really appreciate if you guys bring some manowar.Especially The crown and the ring would be fantastic choice.Keep up the good work.
YES! We need some Manowar on this channel.
“They can’t stop us let them try, for heavy metal we will die!”
Would definitely like to see your reaction to the band Alpha Wolf “ Akudama”
That's the song that got me into Alpha Wolf, and now they're one of my favorite bands.
I mean... alpha wolf is okay but their lyrics are extreme cringe sometimes... like they’re stuck in sophomore year in high school.
You guys should do "Dear Agony" by Breaking Benjamin it's the first song Ben wrote after becoming sober and it's powerful.
Try Flotsam & Jetsam "Doomsday for the Deceiver."
Yes! Long time since I’ve been waiting for this! Less go! Pantera is one of my old time favs and definitely deserves some more love!
He pins happiness/joy to one person/event/thing. When I pin my joy to Christ, he never lets me down, whereas ppl/events/things always let us down.
great reaction guys, my interpretation of this masterpiece is very similar to yours.
you watched the demon night (subpar vampire movie) version of the song. The first verse is missing.
And remember, if it's too loud, you're too old 🤘
You should listen to Apostasy by Living Sacrifice!
Why did the originam video just skip the intro
