    Phil had two friends kill themselves when they were all just kids in New Orleans. He wanted to write about it, because it helps him, but he thought it would be disrespectful to write a song about his friends, and he thought that it wouldn't be a song anyone would want to listen to, so he wrote a song about a guy who lost a girl who he built his whole world around. He thought it would be more applicable and accessible to others. This song is ultimately about finding a way to move forward through grief and finding a way to live after loss that feels so vast there is no way you can imagine living afterwards. It's a positive song. Unlocking your door and passing the cemetery gates is opening your heart and carrying on.

      Phil also has a band called Down. The first album is NOLA. New Orleans, La. initials. Pantera is from Texas. Phil is from Louisiana. Down has a lot of great musicians like Pepper from Corrosion..you all know this though, right? Like Crowbar..etc. Anyway, Phil never quit playing. He did say that what happened with Pantera was his greatest regret. Everyone hated each other, and it shouldn’t have been that way.

    • @MsCruisein
      @MsCruisein 3 года назад +13

      @@joloj23 Phil and Rex both went on to Down, so they never hated each other. Vin and Dime were brothers and they went on to form Damage plan and they never hated each other. Rex, Vinnie and Dime were still ok. There was some ill will between Phil and Vinnie/Dime which started sometime after Phil's addiction got pretty bad and communication broke down. Phil was hurting in every way a person can hurt and said he needed time off after the events of 9/11 canceled the remaining leg of tour for the Reinventing the Steel. He said he'd get his back fixed, but he worked on Superjoint instead, and Vin and Dime said he quit talking to them. Vinnie and Dime said in interviews that they felt stifled creatively in Pantera, and after, just waiting for Phil to get it together, and that's why they formed Damageplan. They- all four guys- decided to do their own thing for a bit, and then things went sideways. I wouldn't say anyone hated anyone. They were family. They fought like family does sometimes. They said mean things to each other, like family does sometimes. Both sides publicly trashed the other, and I'm sure they all regretted it, eventually. Had Dime not been killed on the first Damageplan tour, I have no doubt the two camps would have eventually come back together. Rita said recently that Dime had been expressing regret about leaving Pantera and fighting with Phil before he died. We all know that Phil kicked his habit to have his injury fixed in November 2005 (11 months after Dime died, and four years after what would be Pantera's final tour), which did, in fact, put him out of commission for most of a year while he healed and learned to walk again, like he said it would. We all know that he loves Dime and Vinnie and Rex. We all know Dime loved Phil and Rex and his brother, Vin. Had Dime not died, Vinnie would not have held such a grudge against Phil, nor would he have a reason to want to avoid Phil. Seeing his brother murdered, and losing his brother in that way must have hurt Vinnie in such a profound way. It was all so tragic and unfair. Things would have gotten better, if there was time for the relatively minor wounds of squabbling to heal. They needed time away from each other to grow and breathe and figure things out, but they didn't get it because the murderer took that from them. Life's that way, sometimes.

    Pantera is from the south, and in the south when you pass a cemetery you lock your car door to keep the "bad luck" out. So by saying he is unlocking the door, he is taking on the grief and sadness of the situation.

    I've always interpreted the song as one of living through grief, but making a promise to eventually accept the death and move on with life. "Unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates" is not going in, but going out from being virtually locked in and living in the cemetery and trying to cling to a life that has passed. I'd lost my brother through suicide and never thought this song to be about that, even after that happened. Reading the lyrics and listening to people respond, I can see it as the lyrics have a bit of vagueness to them.

      Sorry about brother
      The part about unlocking the doors and pass the cemetery gates is about reunite and/or reconciliation with her dead girlfriend.

    When the lyric says”I unlock the door and pass the cemetery gates” he’s saying he finally has moved on with his life. It’s not about ending his life. When they tell you struggles/pains and you hurt too, you are relieving them of some of their pain. It hurts you too, so it doesn't hurt them as badly as if they bore it alone. This is what Jesus meant when he said to bear one another's burdens. We are supposed to intercede and stand in the gap for these ppl, to help them get across. When you feel their pain, give thanks,.. God is working. Jesus bore our burdens so that we can help others bear theirs. Thoughts?

    My dad was a pastor and he did many funerals. The distance and objectivity is part of the job. I've interpreted this song as grieving a friend's suicide, possibly the pastor denying that a suicide would enter heaven, and the unlocking of the door is about moving forward. I never read this as the protagonist being suicidal. He doesn't say pass *through* the cemetery gate, but to pass it. Losing a close loved one can make seeing the grave site a huge emotional burden that is to be avoided out of fear. I have custody of both of my parents' cremains and for years I had to keep them safely out of sight. It's been since 2017 and just this spring I found the strength to hang photos of mom and dad in my home.

    This hits me so hard today. I lost my younger brother (38) a year ago this month. Not to mention it was 2 days after his birthday. I’m in grief therapy now. As tomorrow is a session that I know is going to be hard. I’m in deep grief. I believe that we live/die. And it’s not my will as to when others die. I know there is a reason as to why he left so soon. It’s God’s will. One day when it’s my turn, I’ll know why. All I can think is he is rejoicing with God now. He is truly blessed. I’m happy for him. But, because I’m still here in this world, we still feel grief. And it’s heavy. Thank you for your reaction. It helped let some of that emotion out for me.

    I would just like to start by thanking you guys for this one. My entire life and everything people asspcoated with me, the one thing has always been, PANTERA. Until coming back to the Lord I was an avid metalhead but I always always had Pantera on or nearby to put on. It soothed me and was always like blood to me. Meeting Dime back in 97 and a few times after was lifelong memories and goals of mine. Was devastated, (like millions in sure) when he was killed and it affected me personally for years too. Having met him and gotten to know him a bit plus all the feelings that come with his list of works etc.
    This is STILL one of my all time favorite songs by them AND in general. I havent listened to my library of music since coming back. I destroyed over 2000 albums as part of cleaning my spiritual closet (which is still unbelieveable I did esp by those that know me and my music ties) but just hearing this video while I was at work, hearing the music alone STILL brought tears as it always did. RIP Dimebag. The pain, the shame, the cry for redemption. For those who think us metal heads are heartless monsters, keep in mind this is almost universally considered an anthem. In the song, the Protagonist does consider suicide, but in the end he laments that he didn't grieve properly ("I SHOULD HAVE cried") and just wants to move on. It's a hopeful song imo.

    This song is in the same playlist as Fade to Black from Metallica and How Can I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today by Suicidal Tendencies is in. They are darker songs lyrically but the music is so beautiful it lifts my soul for some reason. They have been songs I turned to when feeling down (especially when I was younger and out in the world). Now that I'm older and a follower of Jesus, I turn to him for everything and have not been as down as I was back when I was in the world. That said, these songs still lift my soul because the music is still beautiful. I thank God they were made because they saved my life many a times when life was at its darkest back in the day.

    • @ddcs0s
      @ddcs0s 3 года назад

      The thing was Pantera was so good Rex kinda got slept on unfortunately
      Vinny was extremely talented to the point where he was putting bands together because everyone wanted to be involved in stuff he was doing
      Phil as bad as things eventually got for him due to drug abuse was at one point one of the best vocalists of his era if not for drugs I think he'd of had a longer career at the top and would be considered one of the all time greats
      And Dime was Dime I mean he's towards the top of a lot of lists of greatest guitarists ever
      So Rex would of had to of been a once in a generation talent to stand out in that lineup and to his credit he was great just not to the same magnitude as his band mates

    Very cool song, 100% I remember when I had a mini Pantera phase back a couple of years ago, very talented group of musicians. Also, that Spurgeon quote was very eye-opening... the fact that they had to make up a word in order to attempt to accurately display the measures of Christ's love really gives you an idea of just how real and divine it is. Reminds me that Christ didn't only show others their waywardness or taught them of the kingdom of heaven with a sense of human-like love that runs thin, but a deep love that overflows and is far greater than what we can begin to comprehend... very humbling that He holds that out to us every day.

    Now that you've explained it this way I really see the suicidal meaning behind the: "believe the word, i will unlock my door, and pass the cemetery gates "
    The way I saw it initially was more of a sentence of hope. I bit like: "believe me, one day I will unlock my door (coming out of isolation, pain, depression?), and pass the cemetery gates (go back to the cemetery to meet you again, signifying his acceptance that they are gone)
    I personally haven't passed over the death of my grand father and haven't gone back to the cemetery for this reason. But I realized that the day I would go back is because I will have accepted what I regret. Not having said and shown how important he was to me before he passed. Which is why I interpreted it that way.

First off I have to say rest in peace dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. You can never go wrong with Pantera. I'll be 90 years old and still rocking out to these guys thanks for all the great tunes

    Pantera is one of the best bands, Phil was one of the most underrated Vocalist in the rock error they by far in my top 5 bands of all time and Phil wasn’t afraid to tell you how it was and speak straight facts if it was at the concert or out in public and Rest In Peace Dimebag Darrell one of the best guitarists around that night that he died shocked the rock world, I was in middle school slamming and rocking to Pantera in the basement with my dad

    Over the last year I’ve listened to Pantera’s “No Good ( Attack the Radical )
    A song rejecting racism, gets me going , mad and crying as I listen again . 20 years later still still true …” in the states we have a problem with race…”
    Please take a listen …..
    And yes Dimebag is the man !

    Thank you for this reaction, but also for the bible verse... Makes me feel better about being so compassionate when it comes to other people even at my own detriment... God will give you all the tools you need to get through it, but part of that is willing to give some of yourself up just to help others...

    Other wonderful thing about lyrics is interpretation of the listener. I understood the lyrics 'I will unlock my Door and pass the cemetery gates ' tells how this man who knows he's lived a life of sin will change his ways to pass the cemetery gates refering to the cemetery as a purgatory .
