That's Phil singing with himself on the record, but Rex does the backing vocals when they sing live. Phil was a Judas Priest nut (in fact he did covers of Priest songs before Pantera) so he sings with chest voice that high, just like Halford. It's funny a guy I know who lives down the road from me, was actually the original manager for Pantera back in Dallas Texas. He knew the Abbott brothers from high school. He's now moved on from them and moved up to doing only international tour management with bands like cristina Aguilara, U2, Madonna, Coldplay, Metallica (last time i talked to him was 2009ish). But he used to always tell us when we were hanging out with him about what he did and we all kind of didn't believe him but played along. Until one day you got a phone call and said that he had to go pick up his buddy from Dulles airport who was flying in for a show the next day and 20 minutes later we had Tommy Lee hanging out with us around his fire pit. And Tommy Lee was telling us stories that he was the wildest man to party with haha

Well they weren't really a glam band. Just a rock band of teenagers following the trends of the Whiskey in LA. Where Van Halen along with others hit the charts from. If you look at them after that 'Hollywood' experience, they became the anti glam heavy rock band they were. Dime even went out of his way to find an anti rock guitarist rock tone. Using Randal's not Marshal's, and none of that Charvel, Ibanez standard of the day. They were never the glam rockers the industry attempted to make them to be. This song was a huge influence on me musically in HS, then the day before I graduated I got into a near fatal car accident with this song on. Everytime I hear it it reminds me of that moment in time. Flipped my car 6 times and took out a tree in a Dodge Neon.

This is the official music video, but this is not the official audio. The studio version is 7:03 in length and has an acoustic intro that was cut for the music video. I know im little late but highly suggest you check it out on your free time because it is truly a beautiful intro.

And very few today can eithier!
May the Abbot Bros live forever in their musical achievements, and their humanity, the kindness they showed their fans, never to busy to chat or sign an autograph or share a beer.👍🤙💯👏👏👏👏👏

Love that you finally hit Pantera!!! 5 major albums to go through! They have no bad songs, you gotta do em all! The titans IMO are:
    Domination-Live in Moscow
    Cowboys From Hell
    The Art of Shredding
    Mouth for War
    Slaughtered
    Throes of Rejection
Suicide Nt 1 and 2 (together, a masterpiece of despair and subsequent anger 🤌)
Floods (the truly greatest guitar piece from Dime)
    Revolution Is My Name
    Just to START 😏

One of my most influential bands growing up and teaching myself how to play the guitar. Phil danced with Mr Brownstone and literally died and was resuscitated so that kinda lowered his register, let’s say. Dimebag was taken tragically and I wish he was still making music. What he did to the guitar changed how it was played. We were playing it, he was doing something to it. That’s how you know the legends when they’re in front of you. Great video.

I know this is mainly a vocal channel for obvious reasons, but I will say there are certain guitarists who really are like vocalists where the second you hear them you know exactly who they are, and for me Dimebag has always been one of the top exceptional undeniably recognizable players. In my eyes where the instrument is exactly the same and doesnt have the natural personality that can come from each individual voice, it really is a difficult thing to stand out with such a defined identity as a guitar player, it's something that goes beyond technicalities or difficulty levels. RIP legend

    The song Walk.
Phil was very approachable after a show if you found yourself lucky enough to score backstage passes. I mean he just got done screaming and jumping around like a maniac and 5 minutes later, "so, how'd ya like the show?" Then he handed out free beers.

ok,if you want more of those high notes from Phil, you are gonna have to stick to "Cowboys from Hell" i recommend the songs "Shattered" & "Medicine Man" next for more HIGH note Phil cause after CFH Phil goes on this gradual journey each CD after seeking out his inner "Alex Terrible" lol (even tho Alex wasnt born yet lol) and he does find em,and this is both good & bad as we get some great different music from Phil but we also get a Phil that can no longer reach those once glorious highs!

Early 90s indeed. Nice video. Oh, and I believe that's Rex Brown, that bassist doing harmony. He did in concert (and in the video), and it sounds like him on the record.

Cowboys from Hell came out in 1990 and I bought it on CD (still have it) and I've listened to Cemetery Gates a few times. This entire album is monumental and in all ways the bomb but on a song to song basis Cemetery Gates is like no other. We'd party and when Phil Anselmo did his GGAATTEESS duet w/ Dime Bag everyone would always sing along. This is on my top album list... RIP Abbott bros.
