Others types of prescription topical Retinoids include Adapalene, Tazarotene, Trifarotene. 2. 1:20 "just going to call" Tretinoin "retinol" because of difficulty with pronunciation is not appropriate. You can refer to it as "retinoic acid" or "prescription Retinoid". But it is misleading and potentially confusing to viewers and patients if you choose to simplify or dumb it down because it's "easier". 3. 4:48 Retin A is tretinoin. It is strictly topical. You do not take systemic Retin A to treat acne. The acne medication you are referring to is Isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane. Although the names are similar they are in fact different medications. Trentinoin (prescription) is not just "higher concentration" then retinol. Prescription trentinoin is retinoic acid. Retinol has to be converted by your skin to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid. So it's a multi step process where trentinoin is already retinoic acid so it doesn't have to go through all those steps. It's not just the strength that's different.
@@brendaorozco1195 Keep it simple. In the day time I use vitamin c serum then my spf 50 sunscreen. Then I use an umbrella or wear long sleeves if I'm going out. At night, I use a very gentle cleanser then use retinol then lastly my moisturiser.
Tretinoin is not the same as retinol, it is not just the case of different strength. Both are retinoids but the first one is synthetic, retinoic acid, the second one is a natural form of vit A, milder
This is really good information about whether or not you should apply retinoid/retinoids around your eyes. I actually had no idea that people who take Retin-A cannot get Lasik surgery.

I've been using retinol at lower levels for about one year but then I figured I should boost the concentration. I have festoons and the festoon under my left eye just ballooned out! I've heard of people "burning" their skin around the eye from using a cream and seeing a scar. I've been wondering if it was from retinol creams. Would retinol do that or is it some other kind of cream?
@@sumayyahfarooq3349 I think people may be referring to retinol. I just got eye cream with retinol. I've heard it can help remove milia around the eyes. Interesting video. So damage to goblet cells, is that just from using Retinol near the eyes? How about using Retinol in a face cream(away from eyes)? Can that potentially cause dry eyes?
It shouldn't b/c it should be far enough from the conjunctiva and lids. But it's why oral tretinoin can cause severe dry eyes and they won't let you have LASIK if you're on it.

I'm looking for something that might help improve all of those things, any suggestions would be super helpful! Thanks and God bless ❤
The bumps are called millias. I've had them for ages (they run in my family) and I've tried tons of products and done lots of research. I'm sad to report, the only thing that really works is having a dermatologist manually extract them. From my experience, even the best skincare products I've used have only made a minimal difference, only visible to me when I'm looking with a magnifying mirror and good lighting.
@@elenapopovic2527 That's unfortunate, I too have tried several products. I haven't found anything that works, including high end eye creams. Hope you find something that works for you!
@@Jesus_is_Lord555 I have all the problems you have, including the bumps, which in my case (and possibly yours) aren't milia but just visible sebaceous glands. Nothing can be done about those. I have also tried everything for my undereye circles, from IPL to laser to microneedling to filler and even carboxytherapy. None of those worked but I finally found something now that made a difference. It's called Sunekos and it's an injectable containing hyaluronic acid and amino acids. It's not a filler, it's more of a booster. My undereye cicles aren't gone, but look a lot better. I think for now it's only available in Europe though (and you need a skilled injector), so it depends on where you live. You might have to wait a while.
I only use retinol cream at night and sunscreen in the day. And I only use the retinol about twice a week on my face & eyes and have been for about 15 years or so.

Don't, just in case. I use 0.025%, I used it on my eyes, my eyes got dry, blurry vision (worst in the morning), and I'm suspecting it increased the amount of eye floaters I have. I stopped using it around my eyes for like a month and its getting better, mark out the areas you dont want the tret to get to with vaselin. The only thing I use around the eyes right now is sunscreen/moisturiser. You only got 1 pair of eyes, its best to be safe
Tretinoin (prescribed) is usually too harsh. Using an over the counter that is “diluted” in a cream is usually okay- this is retinol. But ease into it. Don’t do it everyday. Use a low percentage.

Hi Dr Wong, watched with a lot of interest. I've been using tretinoin since July 2023 (1 month) and usually use a pea size on my face once a week. Whatever's leftover on my fingers, i would gently apply over my eye area, a bit below my eyebrows and below my lower eye lashes. When you say retinol is toxic to the meibomian glands and globlet cells, do you mean when it gets INTO your eyes by accident or when it is absorbed by the skin near your eyes? I wasn't clear on this despite watching your video twice. Hope you will be kind to confirm. I do have evaporative dry eyes syndrome. Recent eye check confirmed my meibomian glands is making oil but the oil is not flowing down, it's just hardened under my eye lids. But I have always been suffering from dry eyes since my 20s and now at 47, it feels even more dry. After seeing your video, am not sure if it's because of the use of tretinoin around my eyes but it's only been 1 month of usage. I have been careful not to get any into my eyes but would really like to know if absorption of it via the skin around the eyes can also cause death of the meibomian glands and goblet cells? Thank u so much.

1:12 Just a small correction - tretinoin and retinol are actually different (though similar) chemical compounds. Molecular formulae: Retinol (vitamin A) = C20H30O Tretinoin = C20H28O2 Tretinoin is considered a vitamin A derivative.

I’m 55 and just started taking care of my skin (more than washing my face and moisturizer) this past summer. I started Tretinoin this past September.
Anne, I am 39 years old. What advice would you give me?
@@brendaorozco1195 Keep it simple. In the day time I use vitamin c serum then my spf 50 sunscreen. Then I use an umbrella or wear long sleeves if I'm going out. At night, I use a very gentle cleanser then use retinol then lastly my moisturiser.
You look like you’re in your 20’s. No joke.
Aww thank you!!!!
I thought you were about 35
Tretinoin is not the same as retinol, it is not just the case of different strength. Both are retinoids but the first one is synthetic, retinoic acid, the second one is a natural form of vit A, milder
This is really good information about whether or not you should apply retinoid/retinoids around your eyes. I actually had no idea that people who take Retin-A cannot get Lasik surgery.

The bumps are called millias. I've had them for ages (they run in my family) and I've tried tons of products and done lots of research. Hope you find something that works for you!
@@Jesus_is_Lord555 I have all the problems you have, including the bumps, which in my case (and possibly yours) aren't milia but just visible sebaceous glands. Nothing can be done about those.

So is retinol safe AROUND your eyes or not?
Yes 0.25% strength
No- 20-50% of people using it get eye dryness, blurriness, damage
Thank you! I stopped watching because people need to get to the point and answer whatever it is they are addressing!!

Hey, I know your comment is old. But the RUclipsr and Dermatologist Dr Dray recommended it! I also used it and had no problems. But I don't know if it will help with milia
Hello Dr. please put the link to the sunscreen you mentioned💗
hi i have macular degeneration would you recommend i still use tretinoin?????? please help
Please help, somebody. My head is spinning. I'm terrible at skin care and make up. I bought an eye serum and eye cream today for the first time and I'm trying to find some info on how to use it and when to use it.
(On clean skin)Do I use my face lotion first, then eye cream and lastly serum?
I'm really basic so I don't have a lot of products (because I find all these things super overwhelming to grasp).
I don't even know what skin type I am. I tried a retinol cream for a week and it fried my skin for weeks. 😫
I have a lot of issues in my right eye, more than my left. Currently doing tests to see which skin treatments and makeup might be making it worse. Constantly using eye drops to help with the tired, irritated feeling. I need to use creams on my aging face. Your video was very informative. Do you have any dry eye advice? I'm 68 and had surgery to remove a piece of skin that formed over my tear duct about 4 years ago. Since then that eye seems to have become dryer than it was. Help!
What about castor oil around eye lid? Does it help unsagging eye lids?
I have read that tretinoin around the eyes can cause dry eye and even macular degeneration.
Hello. I received a sample of an eye serum On the ingredients list, it has Retinal and palmitoyl tripeptide-5. I can't tell by reading online if this is retinol or a retinol derivative?
Hi Dr. Rupa! :) I have milia under my eyes and was wondering if you think it’s okay to put a little retinol under there to combat the milia or is there a better product and how often?
I'm having the same problem 😢
Interesting, I’m 36 and I never had to deal with this until until now. It feels like something happened six months ago because everything just creeped up all at once.
So happy to find an ophthalmologist with a take on this!! What about covering the eyelid and lining the lower lash line with aquaphor to stop it from migrating into those areas? Will that protect my eye health but allow me to still get the benefits of the retinol on the skin around my eyes (which is where I show my age the most...I’m 41)? Also, when you say right now users are not advised to get Lasik....Do you mean they should stop the use of Retin-A before their surgery and then they can resume after they have healed from Lasik? Or do they have to give up retin a for good? I was just beginning to look into lasik myself. Thank you for your time!!
Dr. Dray actually suggest doing this
Yes! That’s where I got the idea but wanted to know an ophthalmologist’s opinion too :)
@@beckyjgregory yeah I was hoping she would answer your question as well
Do you remember which video of Dr Dray’s this was where she mentions the aquaphor around the eyes?
@@CamilaSaurus search what to use and to avoid starting tretinoin
Is it safe to put sunscreen on eyelid?
