I first learned about Retin-A on this channel! I peeled like heck several times in my first attempts. But eventually I found a way that works for me and here it is. I applied Retin-A 0.05 only once a week, did that for four weeks; then I applied it once every 6th day (meaning, there were 5 days between applications), did that for four weeks. Then I applied it once every 5th day (meaning, there were 4 days between applications), did that for four weeks. And so on. Right now, I am up to applying Retin-A 0.05 once every 3rd day (two days separating each application). Throughout this whole process, I have never peeled, or I have peeled only very slightly (this slight peeling started recently, when I increased to just two days between applications). The key here is counting the the numbers of days between each application, rather than counting how many times per week you apply it. It took me three months to work up to applying it even just twice week (which is 3 days between applications). So when you see the word "gradual" in connection with Retin-A, this is what "gradual" might look like! This way of counting is working really well for me.

@@patriciaperez9273 Hi Patricia, thanks for the thanks! Good luck to you and may you never peel. I worked up to applying 0.05 retin-a every other day and I’ve been doing that now for about a year and a half. I was never able to work up to every day - whenever I tried that, I would peel the next day. Ive concluded that I’m one of those people who just can’t tolerate it every day or do a higher concentration. On the bright side, Dr. Dray, on her youtube channel, says that’s ok. You’ll still achieve the same long term effect, it will just take longer to do so. Enjoy your day!

You are the best. If it wasn't for you and Dr Dray, my skin would be a mess. I cleared up my cystic acne and learned how to use tretinoin properly without stripping my skin. I use the 0.05% every other day and clindamycin every day. I don't have problems with Japanese chemical sunscreens so I use those. I'm only 26, but I love watching older YTers because they always know what REALLY works and not using it because it smells good.
Edit: sidenote to anyone getting upset with me for answering questions about skincare in the comments.. I am a licensed esthetician and work in healthcare.

    • @clisaa6974

How do you use your Clindamycin? I get literally 1 annoying cystic blemish a month that takes forever to go away. I started my tretinoin .025% almost a year ago( im in my 20s), and when my dr.gave me tret she have me clinadmycin 1% for spot treatment- which I feel doesnt do much for spot treatment.I love Good Genes by Sunday Riley so I alternate between that and tretinoin. I know the tretinoin will be helpful in the long run, but I'm a skincare product lover, and even though my skin isn't that problematic I feel semi-sad I can't try alot of different products anymore because they wont work well with the tretinon. Plus my normal skin got dry because of the tret...... I know in the end a unwrinkly face will be worth it even if its drier.haha

@McKena Sharp, do you apply the Clindamycin first then Retin A? Or the other way around? I have Retin A cream and Clindamycin gel. My doc said it doesn’t matter but just curious about what you do. And, yes, I thoroughly enjoy Angie’s and Dr Dray’s channels.

    • @anekcm
      @anekcm 5 лет назад +11

@@rosanap.7680 I use clindamycin first since retin a is so irritating. It might not make too much of a difference though, I'm sure they just mix together when I apply. You can put on moisturizer before applying tret and clinda to buffer it from any irritation... I do this in the winter when it gets dry

    • @anekcm
      @anekcm 5 лет назад

@@clisaa6974 I just apply it nightly before tretinoin. If I get a spot, I'll spot treat it in the morning with clinda in addition to nightly use. they seem to go away faster. I don't use any acids, my skin is too sensitive to tret to add anything like good genes
If it's a certain time of the month you get it,you could start applying when you suspect a cystic spot is going to pop up for prevention and continue throughout that time of the month until its over. I'm sure your doc didn't rx it for daily use because it's an antibiotic and you don't seem to need it all the time.

I started using Retin A in my 30's due to adult acne issues and I really haven't missed a night for over 30 years. At 62 I have skin that my dermatologist said is a poster ad for Retin A. I am just starting to see a tiny wrinkle near my mouth but that is about it. I use a pea size amount and even get my neck with this amount. The key word here is patience and knowing that time really is the key. Of course I am not a big sun worshiper but this is an amazing product. I love the Australian Gold sunscreen that you recommended and use religiously too. Now if I can just find a miracle product to take away puffy eyes I'll be all set!!! The biggest takeaway I consistently get from your channel is patience and discipline, which has very clearly paid off for you. Your skin is more amazing than ever! I started .025 Retin-A a couple of months ago on my neck and chest three times a week. My dermatologist gave my a prescription to combat sun damage from YEARS ago. Thank you for this video! I used retin-A for a couple weeks when I was about 14, and I went through the horrible purging phase that multiplied my already severe acne x100 and unfortunately it resulted in horrible textured scarring on my chin which I still have though since I have a thick dark beard you can’t tell (I’m a guy) Needless to say, I swore it was the devil and never used it again. Fast forward to today, I’m 28, acne is under control, my skin is used to very intense chemical peels, active ingredients, I’ve been getting micro penning every 6-8 weeks for over a year now and it has produced great results for scarring and also anti aging. I didn’t know how worn my face had gotten until I started seeing its reversal with micro penning. So now I’m all about preserving my youth and staying young as long as possible. That being said, I want to now accelerate those results with retin-A. So, I hoping since I’m older and I don’t have active acne like before that I won’t go through the purging phase. I just got my RX today so we shall see! A boy wants to stay youthful forever 😉😊

I have been using Retin-A since my teens. I sort of backed off because I live in an arid climate, but integrated it back into my routine through proper moisturization. I recently went to the dermatologist and he recommended Tazorac for wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation which is even better than Retin-A! It is more pricy, but if you can find a coupon it lasts a long time and is thoroughly worth it! I am now 41 and my skin is looking better and better. I would highly recommend following this routine rather than starting with botox because your skin overall improve in texture, tone, etc. There is no substitution for consistent daily skin care.

Have you tried using it with the sandwich technique- for instance- use it just once a week (pea sized amount) start off first with using a thick balm like moisturiser & then spread sparingly the pea sized retin A all over your face & for the neck dont put it there directly just rub the residue on your hands over your neck. And then after this put aquaphor on top. Do this 3-4 months. And then progress to twice a week for 3-4 months. And then after 8 months of weekly use, and then move on to alternate day usage using the same sandwiching technique.

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video!! I am a recent fan, and have been "binge watching" your videos. I perfectly fit this profile --- i just turned 51 this month, I bought all the skin care items you recommended and WAY, way, way over did it due to my enthusiasm, even though you absolutely warned us not to. My fault entirely -- I didn't listen! LOL I paid the price --- I had huge flaking and irritation around my mouth and the skin around my eyes was very red. I should have known better... I'm redhead and prone to sensitivity. So, I took a 3 day "acids" vacation and it did the trick! Also the La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baum B5 calming lotion really helped, and I use it as my nighttime moisturizer around my mouth as a preventative. Now I'm doing Retin A every other day, and will scale it back if I see any early signs of irritation. Have to say I am loving the way my skin looks and am SO very grateful for your thorough vetting of what products are formulated correctly!! I feel confident in them, and will stick with them because of that. Anti-aging is so confusing to decipher what is worth the price, what is a waste of money, and what can be purchased less expensively but get the same quality active ingredients. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!!

By getting the 2-month supply of Curology, I get a good product at great savings. One issue I did have was when they swapped out niacinamide for azaleic acid. I had to go through the "breaking in" process all over again, and my skin never did adapt to azaleic acid. I had terrible peeling and redness no matter what I tried. The folks at Curology were great about switching my formula back to the original, and that completely solved my problems. Thank you for another really helpful video, Angie!

When I started RetinA a year ago I followed your routine, I printed it out and did exactly what you recommended and I have had no issues. For a while I was always flaking around my chin area, I started putting a little bit of squalene from Timeless and OMG no more flaking. I don’t have to do that anymore, yeah. I now put squalene on my face everyday and nite before my moisturizer and that has helped with my skin getting really dry. Thank you Angie your an amazing person with loads of information.😘

I tried for the very first time 3 weeks ago. I put tretinoin 0.1% directly on my face on Friday nite and expected the worst on Sunday (not weekdays). My expectation came true and I survived the burn, flaky, dried skin through ice, aloe vera gel and vaseline a lot LOL. On Monday night, I put it again with sandwich method. I use my niacinamide moisturizer as barrier on base and top. Trust me, it feels so comfortable. On Tuesday night I put it again with moisturizer (but only as top coat). I was so happy, it runs no pain at all.
Confident with myself, on Wednesday I put again directly on my skin. And it seems my purging time was over and it only lasted for 3 days.
Now I can tolerate tretinoin cream 0.1% every night. I even lazily just put it (bigger than pea size) and no pain anymore.
I am 49 y.o now and my NF and wrinkles around cheek has gone since this week. So I think I will continue this for long life journey. Thank you Angie from Indonesia 👍💓

Thank you for this Angie. There is so much incorrect information about Retin-A here on YT. It drives me crazy when people say things like "let's get a really good peal going", when referring to it. Finally you have stated that the peeling is a side effect and not what the product is supposed to do. Love all your videos!

Angie, I'm very grateful for those series on Retin-A, they made me rethink my routine. It took 1.5 - 2 years of watching videos on the subject and doing some extra research until I had the courage to try Retin-A. My mother is now sending them from Brazil, where it costs $10 a tube of Tretinoin 0.025, which I started in February this year, and just now in September I started the second one. I don't want to increase the concentration now. It's working as it is, I combine with Timeless serums, cerave spf and Dr. Jarts Ceramidin. I can almost see my 20s skin back. I'm 46 but use spf daily since I was 15, so that might help too.

    Dear Angie
I can not remember how many years ago I found your channel, but I do remember leaving you a comment about being grateful on finding it in my mid twenties.
Now I am closing on on 30, since then I have gradually started to use your skincare, with milder options, leaving the big guns for when I hit 30 and above. I am now leaving this comment, because I have came back to re-watch this after recently I have been finally diagnosed with adult acne (I thought it was clogged pores after using facial oils for a year). I am lucky to never have acne problems in my life before, but this was so ugly I am now on my second month of antibiotics and I have been also finally prescribed Differin. Well, even after many years of chemical acids, HELL THIS BURNS. Using it only once a week (and only on targeted areas) is very reasonable to me now, I tried using it every night as the doctor prescribed and not putting anything else on my face... but I thought I'll end up at the A&E again... (previously I have been prescribed benzyl peroxide which was a hive type fail )! So it took me some time to remember to re-watch your video and now I can say, that I have put all my acids in the fridge days ago, everything with fragrance irritates my whole face, and I have been using snail mucin products which also irritate my skin, even though in the past year they actually made wonders (healed my acne scars) and often helped when I went overboard with the acids.
Learning that I will possibly have to re-instate my skincare each at a time step by step... I truly hope it's going to be worth it, because I hate my acne.
However even after 10 days of dropping my regular skincare, I can now see my pores getting uglier and my undereyes getting dryer :(
Since I am only applying the Differin on targeted areas, yet my whole face burned from everything, my guess is the antibiotics are finally kicking in and making my skin more sensitive than ever. I wish I could afford a dermatologist, but all I have is a random GP and I have noticed if I just complain they just drop me off of something without giving it enough time or thought. Or the opposite. Anyway, being in the UK, getting my hands on Differin, I'd rather not risk it, especially that after 4 uses on one area, my skin is already clearing or something. Something good is going on there XD
So yeah. Currently using only E45 cream as a face wash, as a moisturiser and my makePREM sunscreen and nothing else, and every 4 days Differin.
I hope my wall of text will help others and once again, thank you Angie for your many research and videos, sharing your experience will help me trough the next 30 years, too I am sure of it! :)

Great advice! I started using Retin A about 10 years ago, unfortunately, I didn't stick with it because I did not moisturize and I used it incorrectly (too much product, no sunscreen). So much irritation!! It was horrible. Recently, I have been researching again and I feel I have so much more knowledge than my previous experience. I have just started using Retin A (0.025%) again, but only every 5 days and with PLENTY of moisturizing products on board. Also, with sunscreen (45spf) in use everyday and reapplying on days that I am exposed to a lot of sun (inside or out)! I'm about to do my 3rd dose tomorrow night. I've had some flaking & stinging, but so much different than before. I can actually stick with it this time. Thank you, Angie, for this video!

i just want to give a tip to those starting retin-a.. I would highly suggest starting with an over-the-counter retinol product like Roc retinol and use all of that first so that way your skin is already somewhat acclimated to retinoids, and then go on to a 0.025% retin a product.. It will hugely reduce the chances of irritation and purging. If you jump right into a 0.05%, your skin is almost guaranteed to freak out.

I’m using the Curology after watching your videos about it. It’s a very low strength Tretinoin, with niacinamide, and azelaic acid. My skin is so used to acids but not the Tretinoin. I’m using it every other night. I wait for my skin to dry-fifteen to twenty minutes, and mix the pea sized amount with a moisturizer and apply it. So far I’ve had minimal flaking. I always use sunscreen, and have for the past 10-15 years. Unfortunately the damage was already done from the previous 45-50 years of sun worship. I’m going to work up to every night, and then, hopefully, work my way up in strength. But I’m taking my time with it! Love your channel, and Risa’s channel too. You were the first ones I watched!

I just started using tretinoin following your tips and I'm not having any bad reaction for now. I'll have to wait for when we're free to go out again (we're in a total lockdown here in Spain) to start on Timeless C+E+ferulic.
Thank you Angie, discovering your channel was a wake up call, I'll be 40 in September so I feel like it's time to take my skin care seriously now. 😘

I started off using .025% last month and just recently moved up to.1% and i apply it under my eyes. I dont have any irritation. My skin never needed to acclimate to tretinoin. What works for my skin may not work for others so i dont recommend anybody jump into it like i did.

Start your tretinoin regime in the winter in Canada, when it's dark when you drive to work, and dark when you drive home. Saskatchewan, preferably.

I wish I'd seen this video a few days ago when I started using retin-A for the 1st time. I thought that because I got used to retinol, and I was taking the lightest concentration of 0.018% that I would be fine. Even though I have very light, thin and sensitive skin. And it was great for the 1st 2-3 days, then I noticed some peeling around the nose and chin and instead of taking a break, I used it again. Today my skin started peeling more, it hurt around the nose and burned and then in the middle of the day practically my whole face started burning. Even water felt acidic. Eventually I calmed it down with ice cold water and rose hip oil but for a bit there I was worried. The key with retin-A really is patience! I'm already seeing some effects - which is crazy, but I want to avoid the side effects, so I'm going to slow down. Didn't know I had to introduce vit C serum slowly too. Learn from other people's mistakes - take it sloooowly! I had to gradually introduce retinol cream first too. Cos after the 2nd day already by skin was rough and red.
I'm so grateful to everyone who shares these videos. I believe the results will be amazing if I can already see some, but the important thing is to do it in steps and not rush.

Thank you, Angie!! I'm not sure why, but I am soooo happy when I see that you've done a new video about Retin-A. It's almost as good as dark chocolate. I can feel the serotonin flowing and my wrinkles disappearing at the same time. Thanks so much for busting your tiny butt and putting these thoughtful videos together for us. Sending tons of love from Southern California while covered in tons of SPF 50+ sunscreen and a big floppy hat.

Great tips. I started retin A .25 once a night for 12 weeks then added a day every 12 weeks. I need this for the severe irritation and peeling. I always use moisturizer first, which my derm told me to do. I am able to use Paula’s Choice 2% BHA without an issue. I use C in the am. I can use lactic acid too but glycolic and retin A is too much for my skin. It is a long game.

I went up to the 1 percent Retin A and was fine for weeks- using three nights a week. I didn’t put anything under it except an essence and only SkinMedica eye cream under my eyes - nothing else on top. The last two weeks I have been getting a few like red ‘burns’ for lack of a better word. Last night I had what looked like a red welt but night before was non-Retin A. On non RetinA nights I use an essence, Skinceuticals Reservatol, SkinMedica HA5, TNS Essential serum and Cerave night cream..
My morning regimen is essence, Skinceuticals Vitamin C, Revision eye cream, HA5, Essential serum and lately Obagi HydraLux (once started getting burn like spots) and Elta MD sunscreen.
Sorry so long but do you see a culprit here? I’m doing nothing different than I did before and the 1 percent was not causing any problems

Just received my first curology in mail yesterday . Very excited, i ran out of my retin A about 6 monthes ago and have not had time to go back to Dr. I could really tell m y skin was dull and built up without. Turned to Differin since so convient and over the counter, But i still like retin A better for anti aging. I watch all of your video, since I am 49 with same skin type. I dont know how i missed your original curology video. So excited you mentioned again in another video, so I could go back and watch original. Started last night with 0.012. No problems at all so far. Thank you so much.

Absolutely love and appreciate how knowledgeable and thorough you are with these videos! Seriously thank you! I'm 33 and very much needing to start on this now before my skin gets too bad. I have a Lot of freckles (age spots) from sun exposure and lots of fine line aand some deeper line like my 11s and forehead that seem to be getting worse by the day. I don't have very sensitive skin so if anyone has any tips on a regimen I could be doing it'll be much appreciated! :)

Angie. You are the best. Thank you for all the great information. I am using curology. It has been about 2 months. I decided to start the timeless c serum also. I just watched your new video and I am overdoing it. My eyes are red and puffy. I will now slow down and listen better! One question. How much and when do I use the timeless c. I am hooked on you and am telling all my friends to watch!

Hi Nancy~ I'm so happy you saw this video so you can slow down! Since you've opened the vitamin c serum you should use it on your chest & hands to use it up. Then wait until you're fully acclimated to Retin-A before starting it again. I use 5-7 drops for my face & neck, then more for chest & hands. I put it on in the morning. xo ~angie

I began implementing your skin care routine 6 months ago...(just got my 6 month letter from curology) I am still not up to 0.1%, hopefully in two months, and am currently working in resveratrol and lactic acid. I've gone slowly with everything and have had awesome results! I still can not put the acids on my neck and only do the tretinoin on my neck once a week. Thanks so much for educating us! I've commented before about my history with skin cancer and how since I've begun implementing your skin care routine and sunscreen, I have not had one new cancer show up! For me the anti aging benefits are a bonus, I just want healthy skin!!!!

Differin (previously Rx) is also available over the counter. The name of the ingredient in that is adapalene and it is kind of like tretinoin’s sister...
so people might wanna look into that as well.
Besides the pronunciation I think this is pretty solid advice I just don’t think you necessarily should be giving it because there are a lot of other things that doctors would consider about specific situations withDifferent people not everyone tolerates treatment very well especially if you have rosacea - it can make it worse!
