I honestly didn't realize I had been "exfoliating" until you made your first video about exfoliating. I knew I was getting grime out of my skin, lol. I use the shampoo brush every shower before I wash. I've been doing that longer than deep exfoliating only because when working outside, I noticed I was getting too many dry phases in the winter and wanted to make sure I was conditioning my beard evenly and this will allow for better separation of the hair when applying both wash and conditioner plus being on a softball field for 5 hours in the summer heat, infield dirt just runs off my beard in the shower. So, during softball season, I DEEP exfoliate every other day with an Ox horn comb first. It just seems to do a better job when I'm holding it vertically left to right in a back and forth motion (nose to ear) going down my face from cheek line to neck. Then I finish with the Chicago pet comb going up towards my head and then back down. Don't forget about the stache!! It too needs tlc I feel this not only removes grime, it also helped with growth and noticed more density since I started. And like Dan said, don't do it too hard. A little pressure goes a long way and take your time. It relaxes me, and you prevent any damage or pulling. As usual, awesome video, Dan. 👊
Well, Dan… I owe you. I have had a beard for years and never exfoliated my beard. I bought the carbon fiber comb also and I have to tell you that it was definitely agitated. Instead of using my jack black beard oil (which I normally like), I used Johnny b beard oil. Wow! My beard looks great and my face feels amazing. Your channel has turned into one of my faves. Keep up the great work.
I personally exfoliate when my beard is soaked in the shower. Put beard wash in suds it up. Then comb again while beard wash is still in. So it's like double exfoliating and extra washing. Also cleanses the tool/comb at the same time. I do this every other day.
I exfoliate in the shower also Dan and I am pretty sure it is something I learned from you a few years ago. I also hang my Chicago comb on a hook in the shower. Thanks for the lesson Dan!
Great video Dan! I normally exfoliate once I've lathered the wash but before rinsing it out. It helps ensure I have combed through the wash in my beard evenly, and am cleaning my skin as well as the beard. Feels great! 👍
Great video, Dan. Too many dudes don't know about beard exfoliation. I go through my beard in the shower with a #8 every time. Since I've started this habit, I've had very few days with itchiness or hot spots.
Haven't thought about exfoliating the beard yet! Will have to give it a go. Also, recently invested in the Chicago combs and I'm addicted. Got a No. 1, 8 and have a 7 on the way! I love my Kent combs but man.. that carbon fiber doe
My Chicago comb number 8 turned up a few days ago.... Wow... What an excellent product. I thought my beard felt and looked good before.. Boy was I wrong! Truly glides through the beard like butter and I'm already seeing the results of a Fuller and more Shaped beard! But also the amount of hairs I'm now pulling out has dropped by about 75%, I was using an old dollarstore comb before ( funeral combs... I know Dan😅 ) but I can safely say this will be my comb for LIFE! Thanks for the inspiration to go out and purchase one! Seriously good product! And definitely gets deep down to the skin to remove any nasty stuff and to stimulate that all important beard growth 🔥👌
That is awesome to hear and great feedback Luke! It truly does make a difference and it is one of those things you do not realize until you experience it
This is how I have been doing it as of late, but oddly enough I just came from the video about doing it AFTER the shower, about 50% dry beard. I think I like the idea of in the shower pre-wash more, to lather up and wash away any dead skin after exfoliating.
I bought the Chicago 8 carbon fiber comb. I have never done the deep exfoliation that you speak about. So… I’ll try it tomorrow. I’ll be back to make another comment lol.
I'm gonna need to remember to add this to my rotation. Been horrible at doing night routines lately but I'd like to implement this during that routine.
I use my Goodys face scrubber on the outside of my face and the number 8 over the entire face and under beard every single Sunday which happens to be my stripping day. Love to watch your videos and know that I am doing something proper. Much love and respect as always.
Yup, I mentioned that in this video about covering that on a recent video. This would be daily/gentle exfoliation. Today's video is about a deep exfoliation. I highly recommend trying it!
Interesting! I have been lathering and then exfoliating with a number 7 comb. I was worried I was just scrubbing dirt and sweat into my pores if I didn't lather first. Good to know I am just causing it to sit in the beard. As an automotive technician my beard gets dirty everyday. I wonder if I should be exfoliating more than once or twice a week if I am getting more dirty.
@@DanCBearded Good to know, thank you! I scrub with my finger tips on the skin everyday and use the number 7 deeply 1 or 2 times a week. Should I be gently using it on the skin every other day due to working conditions? Edit: should I gently use the number 7 every day or use something else?
@@DanCBearded Awesome, thank you! I may try a shampoo brush again. I saw your video and appreciate it. I have a question regarding a brand of beard care: do you know anything about Grave Before Shave? If so is it a worthwhile brand? Thank you for all of your informative videos.
I've been wondering about this Dan! My routine has been to exfoliate in the shower with a comb, but doing it while I wash and probably 3-4 times a week. I felt the beard wash helped lubricate the process, but was unsure if I was doing it too often. I started using the shower comb on your suggestion, but don't recall hearing a frequency of using it to exfoliate. I like your reasons for doing it before the wash so I will definitely be trying that, as well as reducing the frequency. Thanks Dan, as always, the trusted teacher!
Hey Dan great video! I have been asking myself this question alot lately. It's like you read my mind. I recently made the switch to the chicago comb on your videos about it and I am glad I did. Also realised I was exfoliating in the wrong order. Thank you as always for the information! You are a great benefit to us who may have questions but are scared to ask them.
For me i use Chicago model 7 pick to brush hair up and outward, my beard usually being about 4-6 inches, super great comb for that. Then carefully go at the skin straight into various areas, not combing at all but raking gently with a pretty basic Conair brush very similar to your Model 8. I haven't tried the model 8 but if the tip of the teeth are same as model 7 then once hair is out of the way i like the Conair a bit better for raking the skin, more gunk out consistently and quicker for me at least but i COULD NOT get said Conair in gently without the Chicago Combs brushing everything else into place as silky as it can. Two step process but works and helped with some series itch that was haunting me, itch bad enough i fear its made me shave everything off before. I'm interested in the Chicago Combs Model 8 but any clue if the tips of the teeth are finer or same on the Model 8 comb compared to Model 7 pick? Maybe a Kent comb could work? The finer tips of the teeth on the Conair seem very valuable for my skin but i figure there has to be a higher quality option.
I know I use a little more than usual oil and butter but so far my beard has been growing like grass. I do it pretty much the same way as you except im using a schampoo brush. Not like the ones you’ve shown though, mine is plastic with tons of teeth on it that i carefully scrape my skin with. Feels like that should give the same result as a comb, im hoping.
