In the beginning I carried a comb everywhere and was constantly trying to keep it in place. As with everything the more comfortable I get with stuff the less your worried. Great points Dan.
Just came back to this video to refresh on the tips of over combing and going in different directions and style with hands during the day instead of combing. Always great to be able to come back to these videos 📹 👊
This was a good reminder for me, I've known this for awhile, but I get way into combing too much as a bad habit sometimes and have to check myself before any damage starts taking a toll. One thing that's helped me personally with this a lot is your advice to start using a pick comb as part of my routine in the morning. I like the beard to be under control, but I also like a lot of volume with it, and that has helped a TON by separating those hairs and getting them styled in place. It also helps with them not getting velcroed together through the day and my beard stays styled like I like it for longer now.
I have a 3 month beard so far. I dont own a comb yet but I use my fingers to comb. Today i used the end of one of my clipper attachments to comb my beard for the first time and oh man, so many knots. I didnt reolize how tangled it was. I went on the internet and ordered a natural wooden comb 👍
I start out with a wide tooth comb, medium and fine. Comb from the bottom and work your way up. Starting from high cheek down, encounters more resistance. Surface combing and gradually work in to the skin reduces snagging. I comb in the middle of the day also, to redistribute the beard products. Yes, clean hands for final shaping. There are combs out there infused with coconut oil, olive oil, keratin. Then again quality wood combs will naturally infuse with the products you use. Happy Bearding, Manbark.
Conversation with the passing of ideas and information is good, some people will not open up and ask a question that is on their mind or find out something they never thought about 🤔🤫
You’re awesome mate! I would like to add using a shampoo brush in the shower instead of a regular brush/comb. It’s the round type of brush with the finger space on top in the middle you can find them almost anywhere and they’re very cheap. Only because I’ve noticed that with my curly and gnarly beard, combs may still snag the hairs in the shower and a shampoo brush doesn’t do that. Another tip for long beards especially long curly beards, always start brushing or combing from the bottom tips and work your way up slowly towards the roots. The other way around will almost guarantee snags and breakage even with the best of tools. I’ve noticed that with my beard because my beard grows in all directions and is very gnarly.
Best tool for growing a healthy beard is the trusted teacher himself! True facts on the hands gents.. P.S. wash and rinse your hands thoroughly before getting them all up in that man mane 😉🧐✌️
I’m a combaholic! I comb dry in the morning with a wide tooth comb right out of bed. I comb pretty much whenever I walk by a mirror 🤣. I’m gonna challenge myself to only comb twice a day.
Phew! I thought i wasn't combing enough but can ONLY comb with product in. Half an hour after oil or butter it's all snagged again, mostly the underbeard.
One thing that had me twisted at the beginning was the hairs that would come out when I ran a comb through. Do not worry about this, it is natural to lose some hairs and your beard will be fine. Now if you are powering through those snags and ripping them out well that is not good. When I am at work and need a touch up, like after masking up, I get my hands damp and run over my beard followed by a comb. This has helped when my beard is dried out from the day.
No additional tips you cover it all awesome video I totally agree with everything you said over combing/brushing could start damaging your hair and the goal is to have a healthy beard
cheers Dan, I started a beard 3 months ago, its going very thick, long and black (lol) but I've been combing it way too much just because it feels good, its not causing damage but it seems that i should just use my hands more instead of using a comb throughout the day. Thanks for the pointers
Outstanding job from beginning to end! Repetition not only aids recall, but you stand to learn something new each time. One thing I do differently is use the backs of my hands: I think the hairs help, and the back of my hand is smoother than palm-side. My beard doesn't care which end I comb from; it may snag at any time with any comb. So I say "slowly and gently, just like stroking a woman (or a cat)". Of the 4 types of teeth, by space between them -- Fine, Coarse (medium), Wide, Detangling -- I've not found the perfect size for my beard, but I'd say use only Wide on Dry as it is less likely to pull.
Good advice for new beardsmen. When I first strarted my beard journey I was combing way to much but over time learned to comb less. I now only comb the beard during the day as needed and when I do comb my beard during the day I always either use a little oil or use water to dampen the beard before combing. I almost always never comb s dry beard.
Finally! I've been waiting for a video on this from forever. There's little info out there on this. I caught my self combing constantly. It took awhile to break it.
Great video Dan I need to comb less I comb out of habit about 5-6 times. I’m putting comb out of my sight so I can break that habit. Great advice about combing in all directions. Thanks Dan
Spot on, Dan! It definitely never hurts to have a little refresher here and there. I'm a little late to the party so it might've already been said, but: invest in quality combs/brushes! There's nothing worse than following all of the Trusted Teacher's steps and then getting roadblocked by a "4 for $5" comb. Alternatively, the one thing you CAN cheap on and should have if you wanna avoid dry combing but might be pressed for time or need post-mask relief: a spray bottle. It'll be a little less refreshing in a few months, but especially now - in addition to solving the stated issue - it'll feel great as the temps are still very much at an insane level.
Great advice Teach.....for the most part thats pretty much what I do. I used to comb my beard way to much but lately I find I'm using my hands to straighten up my beard when it needs it. as always appreciate you and your knowledge.
If my beard has had a rough day and tangled . I start combing from the bottom an inch or two up comb down , then maybe 4 inch's up working my way to my face. Learned this putting braids in my daughters hair. Was a single dad for awhile. This keeps from pushing one tangle into another .
I pretty much only comb my beard in the morning or in the shower. I don't comb at night I use a brush to help spread whatever beard butter I'm using. Great video Dan. I have some bad habits when it comes to combing and its tough for me to break it!
Great info Dan! I was combing in the middle of the day to kind of "reset" my beard. This was causing premature shedding so I am glad I stopped. Question for you though. What makes you, or previously made you, comb your damp beard before applying product? I just always have it damp, apply oil with my fingers, and then comb through to further detangle and style while also spreading the product.
I have thought about this a lot and I’m not sure. It’s probably not best practice, but just “feels” right to me. I guess the best way I could explain it is that if I do not comb before, it would be tangly and tough to get the oil down to the skin consistency. So I like to have a fresh canvas when applying oil.
@@DanCBearded Ohh that actually makes a lot of sense especially with a beard as big as yours. I like how the comb glides and spreads the product when I start combing it, but I can see what you mean with getting it to the skin! Plus the water is there to help so it isn't just a dry beard.
I hang from my beard and do chin-ups twice a day usually works good and it will increase your beard growth by 1/4 inch a week if done repeatedly maybe a half an inch
Hey Dan, thanks for all your videos and this wonderful advice (using your hands to fix the beard during the day) I realize that I was overusing the comb. My beard looks much better only using it twice a day! Take care buddy!
Not gonna lie Dan I’m guilty of combing more dire the day cause if I go outside and at work in the wind I take my pick and just fluff it and I’ll have to try to put the combs down now during the day, thanks for the advice and great video Dan
As far as combing. I only do one major coming prior to stepping out of the house or hotel room for the day. And like Dan said and I would add ensure your hands are clean and free of debris obviously. I use my hands and a folding style Viking Revolution wooden comb for light touch-ups through the day as needed. I'm on 6 months growth so my beard is quite a bit longer so I find I need a little less combing than I did whenever it was about two months. Then I was paranoid about the appearance. The longer the beard gets the more gravity is your friend.
Helpful vid as always, I usually comb mine at least twice a day, once after hopping out of the shower and putting oil on, I'll usually comb it out so its all sticking out like I've been zapped by electricity, then comb it back down into place, and then comb it before bed. If I have to wear a mask for part of rhe day, I do try to touch it back up with a comb or brush.
Yeah I probably comb more than I should, perhaps four or five times a day but only do a deep combing about twice a day. That includes when I get out of my truck when in public and I want my beard to look it's best (I believe we're all Ambassadors of the Beard).
Is “beard burn” really a thing? From combing/brushing too often? I remember watching whisker wars and a guy said that this other guy had it. Wanted to hear your thoughts!
First, well comb (calm) away😃 Nice review Dan 🙏 Question.. in this covid-19 time, wearing mouthguard at work the beard gets messed up though 🙄 Well i comb beard AM and PM both with first with brush and then comb, the brush just for getting the oil and butter deep in and style with comb. Just a note for any other weirdos like me. There are days that I only comb twice per day but they are rare *cringe*.
I’ve been using oil and butter at night. I think I’ll try just the butter and see how that works. Would save some oil as well since I use it in the morning. Thanks Dan!
The other day I found a beard hair that was split in the middle. Like it was a split end but not from the tip but it instead kind of had a hole in it. Never thought that would be possible. My girlfriend didn't find it nearly as interesting as I did so I needed to share this somewhere so here we are.
I play with my beard way too much. Trying to train my dog to bark at me when I start doing it. I’m using a wide and long toothed pick that I love. Less hair loss and goes through nice.
The one thing I had never thought about was the need to comb in different directions. I am in the habit of just combing and brushing down because that result leaves my beard looking nice a neat. If I comb up or to the side it gets all wild looking which I’m not a fan of, but I am in the habit of combing in oil in the morning and brushing in butter at night.
Working on growing out more I only comb/brush in morning and evening 2 times sometimes 3 depending on how it looks but have a while to get back there again Thanks Teacher have a awesome beard day!
Question. I’m new to the beard game, 5 months into the YEARD! But my question is I usually shower once a day, typically around 3-4pm. What do you recommend my daily routine look like with a shower schedule then
I would rinse your beard in the morning, use oil, and whatever you want for styling. Wash in the shower and use oil after. At night get your beard damp and use beard butter
Hello Dan C Bearded, I use to have a great mustcahe but I'm eventually loosing my mustache hairs as they are becoming very fragile. Now i my really scared to even touch them as in if they might break. My question to you is: How to strength my overfacial hairs from mustache to beard? Awaiting for your response. You are really doing something that's helps us in our day to day lives.
I try not to comb too much during the day but now with having to mask up everywhere it’s tough. If I forget to fix my beard after having a mask on I look like Chewbacca when I see my reflection lol. I can usually just pat it down with my hands 🙉 if I remember....
I’m at about 4-5 times. Most of those are just the mustache. I have to comb more on days I have dr appointments because then the beard is a complete mess and have to restyle altogether.
My usual routine is to wet my beard thoroughly, brush it with a boars bristle brush while it dries to damp, apply oil while still feels just a little damp, comb it. Sometimes after this I’ll wait a few, apply balm and then comb again (or sometimes I’ll just sleep straight to balm, lately that seems to keep it feeling healthier longer and I’m not sure why). I always brush/comb out from underneath and then back down. Anything you’d suggest I change to this routine?
Thanks I needed to see this. I think a big problem with mine of keeping my beard healthy is that I work in construction so I’m constantly around dust and debris in my beard really gets dried out by the end of the day
Hi Dan C I really like your video and i have 2 questions: If im doin it twice ( i only use oil for now), once in the morning and the evening, do I have to wash again my beard before the second apply (i only wash with water) ? And I was also wondering if I have to wash it before sleep ! For exemple i applied the oil around 7pm and i went to bed at 10pm, can i sleep without washing off the oil ? Thank you Dan
Sounds delicious! Haha but for real, you are in the right place. Check this video out as a great starting point: ruclips.net/video/6ssh-XuvyTs/видео.html
If you are having to re-comb, restyle or reapply product multiple times a day, you probably need a trim. Having your beard "cut-to-style" means that strong barbering will do most of the work, and you will have less work to do on a daily basis. Also, it's important to consider **why** you are combing multiple times a day. Did you get out of the shower or just apply product? Are you getting ready to leave the house? Did you just do something physical that messed up your beard? These are good reasons to comb. Are you neurotic, compulsive or perfectionistic? Then, put the comb down and check your head. Always be on purpose with your beard.
In the beginning I carried a comb everywhere and was constantly trying to keep it in place. As with everything the more comfortable I get with stuff the less your worried. Great points Dan.
It's always good to hear this again
Absolutely 🤝
Combing my beard makes me very happy. Great video Dan.
I comb way too often. its just soo satisfying.
It really is lol I feel that
Agree! NEVER dry comb! Damp or Butter is your friends 🔥

Thanks for the point about combing different directions each time. I will need to start focusing on this, because I’m starting to develop waves.
I can picture you coming down the mountain yelling,"Gold! I found gold!"
Sounds about right!
What about when wearing a mask 😷? I always comb out my beard after I remove my mask 😷 to help prevent any waves caused by wearing the mask 😷
Yes we need an answer on this one.
He already talked about this! :)

Great tips. We know these things but good to summon it up once in a while! Thanks!

try a beard net that could help amazom carries them, they are mainly used for dish washers ect but can be used in your suitation too
This helps alot! Thanks teach!👊
At last I'm free to watch another video
Awesome!
Hi Dan C I really like your video and i have 2 questions:
If im doin it twice ( i only use oil for now), once in the morning and the evening, do I have to wash again my beard before the second apply (i only wash with water) ?
And I was also wondering if I have to wash it before sleep ! For exemple i applied the oil around 7pm and i went to bed at 10pm, can i sleep without washing off the oil ?
Thank you Dan
Dan C Bearded : How Often Should You Comb Your Beard?
Me Using WAP As Beard Oil: NEVER
Best advice Scuba ever gave haha
Good stuff!
Carlos Costa from beardbrand said “brush the hell out of it” lol

Should we start playing a drinking game every time you say “mk” 😂 gotta love the Dan C! 😝
Hey, Dan. My beard is like cotton candy and twizzlers combined together. OH MY GOOD GOSH! Help!
Dang I’ve been calling my beard dry I wonder why I have so much breakage everyday. Dryness
Sounds like it!
I use a small beard brush, when I itch sometimes I use my brush for relief
Okay what about a beard brush? You mentioned using your hand which is great but is a brush okay or is that also damaging.
Similar concept as the comb. Try to limit it, but when you do just be very gentle
👋 Hey Dan!
🤓really need this advice 🤓 thanks 🍺
