I have the Kent Comb, Ox horn, Chicago comb. I use the Chicago comb in the shower daily and I usually use my ox horn for beard oil application. I also notice how the ox horn comb holds the smell of my beard oil like you mentioned in the video. I've had the Kent comb forever and I usually take it in my travel bag when I go on vacation. I like the Chicago combs the best.
I’ve only really used the wooden ones and my beard is medium length or maybe you’d say reasonably short when trimmed. But I bought that handled carbon fibre one after this video so thanks for the recommendation.
I have a goodline stainless steel comb. Is that bad? It bites when I use the fine tooth side and I'm not being careful. But the further wide teeth work decently.
currently using Percy Nobleman wooden comb and Kent brush found both to be pretty good thus far the wooden comb had relatively good tooth spacing the big thing for me is no static issues which is why I've steered clear of plastic never knew carbon fibre was even a thing for combs got plenty of Carbon on my bike though
I like this, and I’d like to see more, with some detail. Specifically, more detail on which tooth widths (Fine, Coarse, Wide, Detangling…) and lengths are best for what beard characteristics (Length, Density, Straight or Curly…). Unfortunately, it seems there are no standards for widths, and combs with different teeth are commonly referred to as fine and wide although the teeth are really fine and coarse. This can make it difficult to decide which width you need. Tension is good for grooming, but too much can pull hairs and sometimes no tension may be needed. Your comments about wood are good, but there are combs made with attention to the qualities (grain, strength, etc.) of the wood used, that overcome some of your criticisms. Bamboo, a grass, also has different qualities than wood and I think should get some attention. Kudos to Chicago Comb - I’ve read of cheap Carbon Fiber combs that break easily.
Waiting on my Chicago Comb order today. Got the model 7 and 8. I’ve learning a lot from your videos. Recently started to get into a good routine with the proper tools. Thanks!
Hi Dan C, I was wondering if you ever used one of those coconut oil infused plastic combs and are they just a gimmick, I'm not sure about the science behind it ,if it actually extracts oil from the plastic onto the hair? I love the channel, Thanks!!!
I have an Bahawat ox horn comb (non handled). I find it great for detangling but it doesn't provide any tension for styling. I'd like to find a nice styling comb, I will have to see what Chicago offers.
I use a wide tooth comb and most days that’s good enough for volume. Half the time I follow up with the round brush. If I straighten my beard, then I use the Kent comb
Wow, this video really helped me a lot! I've been looking around the market for some new combs, and will take the information from this video into strong consideration.
Thank you ! I just ordered a cheap double side wood comb ... I feel like it didn't even go thru my beard .. useless.. I don't feel so bad now for smash all the teeth out and tossing it 🤬😆
I like Cremo's wood beard comb a lot works for me no issues yet and probably smells like everything lol lot of scents on it. I have one Chicago comb! I like it too.
great video Dan!!! Just like you I held out for a long time getting the Chicago comb. It was only after a doc nick stream that you both highly recommended the #8 that i was willing to give it a go and added it to an octane order i believe. Now the # 8 is the only one i use.
I use a Kent comb at night to help spread the butter. I use the handled Buffalo horned comb you have in this video for combing out my beard right after I shower, and then to spread the oil. And in the shower I have the "Pet comb" from Chicago. Love em all 😊 That said, what's wrong with metal combs?? Never owned one, but I'm just wondering. If they're precision cut and have no snags or imperfections, what's the problem?
I like my Viking Revolution two sided wooden comb. I don't style with a comb though, I use a detangler brush for that with the blow dryer. The wood comb fits good in my pocket and the narrow teeth work best for the stash while the wider teeth go smoothly through the beard. I might check out a carbon fiber comb though. Sounds good.
Absolutely love the #7 & #8 Chicago combs! My beard is getting closer to 8" & I had to transition from the same ox horn comb w/handle. I'm still having trouble with tension though. I tried the Chicago pet comb & it works surprisingly well but I use it more for a shower comb now. Watching your videos has truly helped me through my bearded journey. Thank you, sir.
Hey Dan! I was wondering, have you ever used one of those Wet Brushes? I started using one recently and it was a bit of a game changer for me. Especially later in the day, many hours after styling. I have about a 7" beard measured from the bottom lip. That brush seems to be the best at "re-grooming". It's full without frizz and even. Anyhow... I know you're thinking "if it works for you then go for it". I'm just curious your thoughts on it.
1:30 I had one of those two if I remember one of the teeth broke on it and I did have the one with the skinny skinny teeth on one side and I lost it and I did not cry over it I just wanted to say that before I did not still remember it
I could not believe that a comb could make that big of a difference until I got a Chicago comb #8. It's amazing and it's my go to comb hands down. I also use a Chicago Pet Comb in the shower. It does a great job too. The other comb I use that you didn't mention is the Chicago Comb # 6. I use it as a finishing touch on the outer layer of my beard to smooth out any wide teeth marks left by the #8.
I just received an ox horn comb from Beard Octane and when I rinsed it for the first time, it had a very strange smell. Is this normal for a new ox horn comb? This is the first ox horn comb I have purchased, so not sure. Would u recommend washing it with some beard wash prior to using it for the first time?
Dan, I am SO glad that you showed us carbon fiber combs. They are so amazing and by far the best tool I have used. Like you I have numerous number 8 combs so I always have one close. I started with Kent combs and they were fine, but the Chicago Combs are just next level. I also really enjoy the number 7, and the number 2 on my mustache. I also have a small bathroom and small sink, I knock these combs off fairly often, and I have never had a single one break.
Just received my ChicagoPet Comb..... Come-on Dan where has this GEM been it Loves My Natural 9in, Just Put My #8 in My Car... Thanks Dan PS I stopped using balm and butter I’m just using oil twice a day absolutely works great with my new pet comb....
I use the Chicago combs on my beard and head hair. I have a medium length beard and use the #8 on my beard, the #1 on my mustache, and the #6 on my head hair, also used the #6 on my beard when it was shorter. These are hands down the best grooming tools I have ever owned.
Chicago combs 7 & 8 are my go-to's. I also got the oxhorn/buffalo handled combs that I'll use at the end of my routine. I can do Woden combs I just feel like my beard doesn't style the way I want it too. Kent combs was as bad as experience for me as when a lady at Sport Clips put cremo beard balm in my beard. Caused me pain, breakage was insane, that's when I started using oxhorn combs and I lived happily ever after. Great video!
So far, 2 to 3 years in. Wood is good start short to med. Cell only use for mustache. Horn i used shortly at med length. Chicago/carbon #8 morning, night, and shower. No1 touch ups throughout the day
Hey Dan, I’m new to the beard journey. 3 months in to growing my beard for the first time. I’m at maybe an inch and a half of growth. Definitely fuller on the shelf/ bottom of my beard, cheeks are a little behind and less full but I’m pushing through. I use a boars hair brush daily + oil. From my understanding a comb isn’t quite for me at this stage I’m correct to assume this?
wonderful video Dan! I have Kent brand combs, especially the small one for mustache and it works well for that area, apart from before I used the typical ones with boar spikes.... but the beast is growing! and today I received my first Chicago Nº8 comb and my god! What a spectacular comb, after just one day with it I fell in love, I have ordered a couple more now!
I just ordered my Chicago comb number eight from Amazon should be getting it Wednesday I’m looking forward to using it on my eight month natural beard Thanks
Yes, EDC Bossman double sided for at work and on the go, perfect size for front pocket next to minimalist wallet. Chicago #8, one in shower, one at bathroom sink and one more on dresser. #7 bathroom. Boreshair brush on dresser for early am straightening.
@@DanCBearded Thanks, Dan! I appreciate it! So to clarify and confirm you use both of the Chicago Combs (#7 & #8) in place of the Kent 9T and the Boar Bristle Round Styling Hair Brush from GranNaturals that you linked in that morning routine video? As of this recent upload I know I heard you said you prefer the Model 7 Pick Comb from Chicago Combs for the bottom portion of your beard in comparison to the rounded boar bristle brush mentioned (just seeking confirmation). Furthermore, do you incorporate a different model from Chicago Combs as a substitute for the Kent 9T or does the "Model 8" officially take precedence over the Kent 9T for you nowadays? Again, thanks in advance, Dan! Your input is valued! Also: what is your take on the manufacturing process of the Chicago Combs as far as the mold is considered? I've seen a few people say they are mold-pressed and wanted to hear your thoughts as to whether or not they may be and if it is a concern in comparison to the Kent line where the combs appear to be saw cut, hand polished/buffed to create soft rounded teeth that will not damage the hair.
@@travisryan2299 I pretty much only use the #8 not other types of combs or brushes, other than my heated brush. As far as their manufacturing, I do not know how they make them. I don't really care lol to be honest. For the reason that I know they are absolutely amazing for my beard. I feel the difference and have no concerns.
@@DanCBearded Thanks, Dan! Appreciate the feedback. I purchased the Chicago Comb #8 and #7 the other day and have been using them, more so #8, for a few days now. Gamechanger! I have used Kent combs, horn combs, and wood combs amongst many other combs in the past but this Chicago Comb. . . It's the TRUTH!!! Thanks again, Dan, for providing much knowledge!
I have been using a detangler comb almost exclusively since graduating away from athose wooden combs as my beard got longer. My beard hair is course and curly and the Tortoise Shower Detangler Comb from Sally's (for .99) is the best way I know to avoid breakage and lots of snarling. I keep one in the shower and use one after oiling my beard. They are sturdy, easy to keep clean, do not take on aromas, and I have not noticed static issues I may try the Chicago #8 after watching this, but hesitate to spend the money without knowing if it works with my kind of beard.
I use the wooden handle comb when I first get out of the shower to get rid of any tangles then style with the ox horn comb. I know it was a long time ago but there is a video where you're using one of the wooden cheap combs for your night time routine. Of course you beard was much shorter and you had basically just started your videos.. We all live and learn., and that must have been one of your lessons.
Just a heads up, and it makes total sense, but my beardbrand comb warped from using with my blow dryer over time. Once I noticed it, it made total sense and it should not have surprised me lol.
Great video Dan. I have all the combs featured. Could not agree more about metal combs. I picked up a Chicago metal comb. Worst experience ever. There is a special place in hell for metal combs.
I could never gel with the wood combs either. I used to use a similar wide tooth comb from the big box store, and I had a "Flat Top" comb I used for styling. They worked well, but the Chicago #8 does the job of both, and is much higher quality. I saw a thread on the Facebook group, where there isn't anything special about the Chicago combs... That is true, but there is just something about them. They are well made, and just do what they're supposed to do. They also just feel nice in hand... I had a metal comb for a time, but again could never gel with it either... I have the Chicago #2 for my Mustache, the #6 is my Wife's, the #7 for volume, #8 is my daily driver, and the Pet Comb in the shower...
@@DanCBearded I'm going to amend what I said earlier... I had been just using the #8 to "Fluff" my beard after finishing styling, and thinking it was doing just fine, well... The #7 blows that thing away... It's subtle, and nobody else would probably notice, but I feel like it's a huge difference...
Absolutely love the Chicago 7 comb. One of my go to’s. But my absolute new favorite is the pick from Live Bearded. Highly underrated and I highly recommend it
My go to is the Ox horn wooden handle comb. I have the Chicago Pet comb as it gives me two options. I have thrown away my wooden brushes as they did get warped and mold.
Hey Dan , with reference to Chicago combs ,what is your reason for for using the one with handle more than the pet comb ? Is it because of the handle convenience.
I have a less dense, naturally fine beard so I prefer close together teeth. The part of my Kent comb with the fine teeth that most of you would use just on your mustache, I actually use through my entire beard just to style it and get everything going in the right direction. I have a two-sided wooden comb I use to basically distribute oil and detangle my hair, and then I use a boar bristle brush to really distribute and style. And if my beard still isn't looking particularly the way I want, I use the fine tooth side of my Kent comb and that's basically my quintessential styling comb.
I've been using wooden combs since the beginning. I have both a handled comb, and the typical, two sided, beard comb. I use the handled comb for my initial comb through and to spread my oil. I use the two sided to spread my butter. I have had no problems with either one thus far. However, the Chicago Combs carbon fiber models 2, 6 and 8 combs are on my want list.
I used a Kent comb for a while, but as my beard got longer it stared pulling out hair. I recently switched to the #8 Chicago comp per your recommendation, and its great! Definitely my favorite comb so far. I also have an ox horn comb, that's not too bad.
The Kent combs I have used had problems with the teeth warping. I had a mustache one that I used with mustache wax and it bent the teeth. Carbon fiber combs are amazing. Thanks for the video Dan!
Yes into Chicago comb because of your videos. I have # 6, 8, 1, 2, and a pet comb I gave to my wife. Plan to order the #7 pick comb shortly as my beard is getting long enough to use. See what you done to me😄😄😄.
For me it’s Chicago combs all the way. I still like Kent combs, but like you said it’s just a mustache comb now. Thank you, I enjoy getting real life use cases!
I have every single one of those combs. To include the Walmart one that I keep in my shower. I am down to only the Chicago combs now and a brush by Royal Beardsmen. Good video my man!!!
Started with those cheap wooden double side combs and quickly changed because couldn't get deep enough in my beard, feeling like it was useless. Bought 2 Kent combs after that a R7T that never leaves my bag to do a quick check up through the day, and a 9T for the bathroom. But once my beard grew longer, I saw Dan's videos and I bought a buffalo horn and it changed my life ! Curious about the carbon ones, they seem to be really great !
For sure the carbon fiber combs, especially the #7 pick comb. Other than, all the products on this channel should work great! Give this company a look: Beard Octane= www.beardoctane.com/?rfsn=3293972.39594 * DANC10 for 10% off Great place to start!
I did use Chicago combs for my head hair and my beard. A seriously game changing even for the head hair. I can easily pass under my hair and it's actually a good feel like a massage. 🌹
I have made the exact same comb journey! Lol!! Wood, to Kent, to that exact same handled Buffalo horn comb because of your video a few years ago Now I only use my carbon fiber Chicago combs, for over a year now. My favorites are #6, #8 and the pet comb. All fantastic and the best quality combs I have ever tried hands down! 💯👊🤘
I switched from a wooden comb to a plastic Kent comb that has two different size teeth on it for versatility. Definitely works better for my 4 inch beard. Also made the switch from heat brush to hairdryer. Those two changes combined have completely changed how my beard looks and for the better as well. Thanks to your advice! :)
I have a big long beard, but the hair is fine so a wide tooth comb doesn't work well for me. A comb that has slightly finer teeth keeps the hairs closer together, so my beard actually looks fuller. For that reason I still love my Kent 9T.
Just got my Chicago #8 in the mail. So far I like it. Throwing out my Walmart wood one. I had no idea I was using the wrong comb for years. Hopefully it will help with split ends and pulling? Just found your channel last week. Really hoping with all your advice, my beard will grow beyond the 6” mark. Thanks sir.

@@DanCBearded comb my apologies for not being specific.
@@darrenpate441 Chicago comb #1 should be perfect!
@@DanCBearded thank you I'll look into it .
Love my Chicago combs! Two sets for me. One for home and one packed in my travel bag. The pet comb is in my car for quick fixes
I think I have 4 sets now lol I truly couldn't imagine not having them
I use the wooden handle comb when I first get out of the shower to get rid of any tangles then style with the ox horn comb. I know it was a long time ago but there is a video where you're using one of the wooden cheap combs for your night time routine. Of course you beard was much shorter and you had basically just started your videos.. We all live and learn., and that must have been one of your lessons.
For sure, my tools have changed all over though the journey. I now only use the carbon fiber combs. Until something else comes and dethrones them!
Just a heads up, and it makes total sense, but my beardbrand comb warped from using with my blow dryer over time. Once I noticed it, it made total sense and it should not have surprised me lol.
Ahhh, makes sense!
I just bought the Chicago comb #1, the size is nice and compact but it pulls hairs way more than my wood comb. I'll probably use it in my travel bag.
Oh cool! The #1 is too small for me
I had no idea Chicago combs were available on uk amazon, ordered myself some straight away 😊👍🏼
Boom, that is awesome!
I use the WAHL combs and the wide WAHL comb with many bristles.
I haven't used a WAHL comb that I am aware of
I have a Kent !!
Classic brand!
Great video Dan. I have all the combs featured. Could not agree more about metal combs. I picked up a Chicago metal comb. Worst experience ever. There is a special place in hell for metal combs.
hahaha!
Very very well said!
Highly underrated and I highly recommend it
I have not even seen that one, I will have to check it out!
@@DanCBearded yeah it’s not heavily advertised, but I decided to order it and I’m glad I did. Has I unique color to it too
Only use wood currently. Chicago #8 is on my radar for sure though. Too many people use it and say great things to pass it up
It is the best I have ever used!
My go to is the Ox horn wooden handle comb. I have the Chicago Pet comb as it gives me two options. I have thrown away my wooden brushes as they did get warped and mold.
Awesome Donald!
Dan, I think there will have to be a specific comb channel apart from these beard oil companies. 😂😂😂
haha right!?
Hey Dan , with reference to Chicago combs ,what is your reason for for using the one with handle more than the pet comb ? Is it because of the handle convenience.
Yup! I just like the angle and leverage it gives me
I just have the Cremo double sided wooden one from Walgreens, but now I feel soiled and cheap!
haha time tp upgrade!
Great feedback, thank you Thoran!
Great feedback, thanks Nick!
I used a Kent comb for a while, but as my beard got longer it stared pulling out hair. I recently switched to the #8 Chicago comp per your recommendation, and its great! Definitely my favorite comb so far. I also have an ox horn comb, that's not too bad.
That is awesome to hear! I completely relate
Thank you for this video, Dan! I’ve been hoping for a video like this. You killed it. Well done.
Thanks Jacob!!
The Kent combs I have used had problems with the teeth warping. I had a mustache one that I used with mustache wax and it bent the teeth. Carbon fiber combs are amazing. Thanks for the video Dan!
Very interesting! Great feedback
Bro…your beard is ON POINT in this video!
Thanks Joe!
I got my ox horned from Royal Beardsman. I love it.
Awesome!
I use the handled o horn comb from beard octane and it works great!
Awesome!
I have had game changer results with my daughters deranger brush
That’s awesome!
I’ve gone through the exact same comb process, ended up with Chicago Comb as my permanent go to. The Kent combs seemed to leave static in my beard.
The static is real!
I use the pet comb because it has everything I need
That is a great one!
Man I love those Chicago combs!
Truly the best!
A guide on how to keep our combs (wooden, etc) clean would be great I think

@@DanCBearded oh hell yeah!! thanks!!!
Yes into Chicago comb because of your videos. I have # 6, 8, 1, 2, and a pet comb I gave to my wife. Plan to order the #7 pick comb shortly as my beard is getting long enough to use. See what you done to me😄😄😄.
haha I am sorry!
For me it’s Chicago combs all the way. I still like Kent combs, but like you said it’s just a mustache comb now. Thank you, I enjoy getting real life use cases!
Awesome, thanks MAtt!
I use the chicago #8 also and it's great, along with a handled oxhorn comb from Beard Octane. Gonna have to get a chicago #7 apparently...
Give it a shot!
I have every single one of those combs. To include the Walmart one that I keep in my shower. I am down to only the Chicago combs now and a brush by Royal Beardsmen. Good video my man!!!
Thank you Ron!
Man!!!! You did it again! Thanks Dan!
You’re welcome!
Kent Combs are great! 💯
Pure quality that will last the test of time
Started with those cheap wooden double side combs and quickly changed because couldn't get deep enough in my beard, feeling like it was useless. Bought 2 Kent combs after that a R7T that never leaves my bag to do a quick check up through the day, and a 9T for the bathroom. But once my beard grew longer, I saw Dan's videos and I bought a buffalo horn and it changed my life ! Curious about the carbon ones, they seem to be really great !
tThey are amazing!
Hey what beard products you recommend for black men/ coarse hair?
For sure the carbon fiber combs, especially the #7 pick comb. Other than, all the products on this channel should work great! Give this company a look: Beard Octane= www.beardoctane.com/?rfsn=3293972.39594

I have 2 Beard Octane ox horn combs and Chicago Combs #8 and #7, I love them all
Awesome Jax!!
Hey Dan, for some reason Chicago combs does not work for my beard and i dont know why, i only use wooden combs... 😊
I have never heard that before, so thank you for sharing! I wonder why?
I use the #8 in the shower and for styling, but my handled ox horn combs are still my go to.
Oh interesting! I would not have guessed that. Thanks Ken!
I did use Chicago combs for my head hair and my beard. A seriously game changing even for the head hair. I can easily pass under my hair and it's actually a good feel like a massage. 🌹
That is great!
I have made the exact same comb journey! Lol!! Wood, to Kent, to that exact same handled Buffalo horn comb because of your video a few years ago
Now I only use my carbon fiber Chicago combs, for over a year now. My favorites are #6, #8 and the pet comb. All fantastic and the best quality combs I have ever tried hands down! 💯👊🤘
The journey is a fun one! Luckily they aren;t very expensive
You are absolutely welcome!
It's like you knew I was up late last night researching the differences between Kent and Chicago combs. Awesome
He's creepy like that.
haha timing is everything! I try to be a mind reader
Awesome video Dan!
Thanks NB! NB can be Nail Banger or No (wax) Butter lol
@@DanCBearded I’m starting a bearded revolution! We need only beard butters with no wax, or at least a rating system of sorts! Viva La Beard!
I have pretty much followed same as you. First Kent comb then oxhorn comb and now using the Chicago combs.
Awesome Stephen! The journey is a fun one
I have a big long beard, but the hair is fine so a wide tooth comb doesn't work well for me. A comb that has slightly finer teeth keeps the hairs closer together, so my beard actually looks fuller. For that reason I still love my Kent 9T.
Awesome feedback!
My go to brush is this thing called the Tangle Teezer. It's the only guy I used for my beard and my hair.
Awesome John, I will have to check those out
Just got my Chicago #8 in the mail. So far I like it. Throwing out my Walmart wood one. I had no idea I was using the wrong comb for years. Hopefully it will help with split ends and pulling?
Just found your channel last week. Really hoping with all your advice, my beard will grow beyond the 6” mark. Thanks sir.
I use the number 8 in the shower
Hey, welcome to the channel!
I got a No. 7 for my birthday and the search is over. I have found “the one”.
Yeahhhh, that is awesome!
