I've been maintaining my beard at an advanced level for several years now, and this video taught me I've been combing way too fast. You can indeed teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks Dan! 👊🏼
Just wanted to say thank you Dan for all the info. Started off with cheap products and poor care and now after using dead men's beard co quality products and and better care practices my beard is healthy and looks good so thank you...
Beardsmen need to listen to this guidance. It was a game-changer in my journey. Getting the correct comb and brush for your beard makes a world of difference. Cleaning them keeps everything healthy
I did try every comb you can think of, (horn, wood, cheep plastic, cellulose acetate, everything lol). The Kent combs (cellulose acetate) are great, but still would get static. Now all I use is the carbon fiber Chicago combs (the #6, #8 and #9 (aka the pet comb) I use the 6 and 9 for heat styling. I use the 8 to finish and shape, it’s also my pocket comb for out in the world styling emergency’s Great video Dan! I hope every bearded person out there stay’s far, far away from those cheep pressed plastic combs 💯👊🤘
6:17 DanC, I actually clean my aberlite every day as well. With a dry paintbrush, after my nightly butter routine, I typically look down at my aberlite and make sure it’ll be clean for the next morning’s straightening.
That’s awesome! I’m usually twice a week with alcohol and a brush. Not quiet as important because it’s not getting down to my skin like a comb, but still want to keep it clean. More often is certainly better!
Great info Dan! You pointing out combing too fast, did make me realize, I am combing too fast. I'll sometimes think its pretty well combed and speed up, then blow right through snags and sometimes rip hairs out. It's hard when your trying to get in and out, but really glad you reminded me of this.
Hey Dan!! I needed this video on all levels. The things that you pointed out I have been very guilty about when it comes to combing or picking out my beard fast. I received this as correction and I’m gonna run with it. I am totally with you about having different combs for specific assignments. Like for me, I love to use a wood pick to help distribute the product throughout the Beard, but I am all about Chicago Combs when it comes to styling and adding volume. (No. 8 & 11 to be specific and No. 10 to carry in my pocket)
Dan and the tips! Should be your new youtube slogan, always a good idea to listen to any tips! Everyone has something they can offer to others. Thanks again buddy!
Well I just learned something new! Granted I knew everything you said......except the wash everyday I was doing like once every week or two and the toothbrush will help as I found it frustrating to get in between the teeth.
Combs are the most important thing while also being so easy to skip starting out. I dont think most people are aware most the stuff aold to help hair care can hurt so much at the cheaper end of the scale.
Why every time I ask myself a beard related question, Dan makes a video about it at the same time answering that question? That’s amazing :)Thanks so much Dan for everything you do! Have a great day! Yanick
For new and intermediate beardsman suffering from wings and or dips i found this technique really good for drying and the combs size and type are huge deal to make the process simple and take least time. Check out Dans blowout video for better visual, this is how i work it but every beard is different, my hair is darker curly european/indo-european hair (every color, from distance looks dark brown) for reference which works best with heavier oils: Use blowout with hairdryer (air going up into beard from below) and pick like 7 or 11 from Chicago, or any good quality one of different material but similar shapes, pick because you can get all the cheek hairs up and out evenly, go one more time with the big Chicago Comb Model 8 for underside and forward, casually line base up evenly. Now you are looking kinda crazy but if its at all uniform its good. Now with Heat Brush use light pressure, no need to go down to skin, and with mild outward angle line up everything to where wings would be. If no heat brush Model 8 with hairdryer on medium and gently downward nice and easy. Hair Dryer and comb maybe even the easiest/quickest but i find i have less fly aways with a heat brush like Aberlite (lowest temp personal preference.) Then use "cold shot" (no heat mode on hair dryer, setting and or button) it into place regardless of if dried with heat brush or dryer+comb. Boom now no more crazy wings and your beard is full as can be. Where the wings would form is now lined up with the rest of your beard so it will just stay full and uniform all day no reason to stress. 💯
Never used a pick before I’ll have to get one! My beard by the jaw always and sides are always messy. I think due to a CPAP. I always rush threw my morning routine just to get on with the day and get to work, plus get to the other 200 things I need to do that day.
Dan, Never thought about cleaning the comb everyday, will try to do that. I use he Chicago Comb #8 and Pick #7 but my go to comb is the #8 hands down. I have several from different beard companies. I also use a few different wooden combs on occasion especially mustache combs. Thanks for another great video!
I wear beard for ~20 years but always it was short because my hair there are very curly and it always looked like face pubes. Around 2-2.5 years ago I decided to don't care about how it looks and what other people will think and finally go for big one. I started using Chicago 8 after one of your videos from last year I think. I was using Kent but it's too small and irritatingly static (it's ok for moustache but I still prefer different - those small ones that's look like made exactly for moustache), I was also using those cheap ones and switching to Chicago combs was really something different. I have one in shower to use it like for last step there to untangle after washing and before drying. Another one is near my "station" where I have oil, hair drier etc. I'm thinking also about getting no 7 also.
I'm fine in all these fields except for combing way too fast and too often, as a result I pull through snags before I get to notice I need to ease up. I've been better about catching myself and slowing down though.
I didn't even know a "good comb" even existed until I watched some of your older videos. Then I went on the river APP and found a really nice Kent folding comb and I mean a world of difference those "funeral combs" were chewing up my face . OUCH!!!
I just watched this video out of habit but didn’t think it was going to be anything special I was totally wrong I did learn tips and thank you I am going to pass on this video to the younger people to educate them as well Thanks again

How to make my beard grow long? I know there is a trick.. what is it?
No tricks, unfortunately. Patience and healthy habits. You can try taking biotin (lookup Dan C Bearded biotin here on RUclips) and it can help the hair grow faster.
