I'm such a newbie, at 69 years old! Back in college, I had to grow a beard/stache for a theater production but the beard wasn't good but, since I always cut myself while shaving my upper lip, I liked the stache. So... more than 50 years later, and cloistered because of coronavirus, I decided to let my beard grow to catch up with my stache. Oh... and I let the natural all white shine through (no longer coloring my stache a dark brown). It's only been about 2 months and the beard is not thick, but I bought some BeardBrand wash and softener to make this look and feel the best it can. I decided on Beardbrand because I still remembered Lori touching Eric's beard on Shark Tank... and I like how you approach taking care of your beard. Stay well. Stay healthy. Keep growing!
When I use the Beard Softener, I leave it in my beard for about 5 minutes before rinsing, and my beard is insanely soft afterward. Then, after using my Utility Balm............ *DAMN.* Feels good. 👔👞🎩
Thanks Eric for letting us know your beard care routine, from washing and/or conditioning to trims. I’ve had my beard for 4 years and decided to condition half my beard and let the other half be a test to see and feel if I was wasting my time and money. Because I have a salt and pepper beard it curly, kinky and dry. Well needless to say in two days the difference was so obvious, easier to comb, less hair breaking. So thankful to Beardbrand for Utility softener.
My girlfriend bought me beard softener a few months ago, I love it, I love the smell, I even use it on my pubes; TMI, get uncomfortable baby. But I had no idea how bad I was neglecting my poor beard and facial skin till I found this channel and others like it, when it comes to basic things like oils, a wooden comb, all sorts of great things I didn’t know before. Thanks very much you guys.
I saw this video and I thought "obviously I'm not going to watch a video on how to wash and soften my beard" but then eight or so minutes later I found "ah shit, I watched the whole damn thing". But I'm glad I did because there were a couple of things Eric said that turned out to be a gamechanger this morning. 1) You can apply this to a dry beard. 2) You can use this as a leave-in conditioner. So instead of going for my usual co(or so)-washing routine where I apply it to a wet beard and leave for five minutes before washing it off I switched gears. I put it in a dry beard and then left it for half an hour whilst I drank coffee, read etc. After washing it off and applying some beard oil I noticed it had really tamed the curls in my beard more and it looked fuller and was just more manageable. So, if you have a difficult to control beard that loves to curl at the bottom (think somewhere between a Milocco and a Bandholz in terms of texture) then the whole 'in dry beard/leave for half an hour' might be a gamechanger for you, too. Thanks for the tip, Eric!
This is great! If I search your channel long enough I'm convinced I'll find answers to anything I ever wanted to know about beards, beard growning, beard maintenance, etc. :-) I was searching the internet for the definition of a goatee and I stumbled across your site. I then spent my entire Saturday binge watching your videos. I didn't realize how much I didn't know about beards until your site. Now, suddenly, I feel like a comradery instead of a sense of isolation. This video is a good example. I ordered one of your beard combo kits but was wondering if I would know how to use it other than the directions on the bottle. I wondered if "one of them" would do a video on how to use it. Of course! :-) I've watched videos of all the different guys, Greg, Ben, Jack, Carlos. There's probably more guys I haven't seen yet. Each one has a different perspective. I love it. You're not all lock-step in line. I've even seen one of you comment an opposing perspective on another one of your own videos. I came into this weekend not liking the way my 6-8 week beard looked and came away with the confidence to give it a little more time. All that your doing? Keep it up!! :-)
I'm going to show this video to my husband because despite the fact that I'm a cosmetologist and have told him to wash his beard this way numerous times, he won't listen to me. Because I'm his wife. And he is stubborn. 🤦🏻♀️
Know the feeling. I've suggested to my wife for a good 15 years to learn to drive a manual transmission and she's not having any of it. Hopefully this video helps him!
I wash my beard daily with an all natural, good quality beard soap bar. Rinse beard, get good lather on hands first then massage into beard and skin underneath, using fingernails to lightly exfoliate skin. I then rinse and use beard pick to detangle beard hair and get natural shape before stepping out of shower. I pat dry my beard, apply natural beard oil to skin under beard and through beard, then finish with natural beard balm for conditioning hair and light hold. I agree with Eric in the application of the different products and differences between head hair and beard hair and your comment on scalp vs face resonated. I believe in using 100% natural products of the highest quality ingredients. Definitely shower is much easier than sink! Keep up the great videos and for your work educating and engaging the bearded community.

Where do you get ur beard products from, here in Pak, isl to be specific. All I was able to get my hands on were bluebeard products or do u ship beardbrand products?
We can, but it costs a lot. 3000Rs just for the shipping and 3000Rs if you intend to buy the cheapest beard oil. So starting price starts from 6000Rs...
I really need sound advice from somebody... I had a beard for 6 months, and the last 3 months my entire surrounding skin (including forehead) was insanely oily. On top of that, my face was bright red with the shine, and occasional flushing. It also had a weird smell to it. Also when I got out of the shower, I had red patches all over my face. I researched and came to the conclusion that it may have been causing Malassezia. I immediately shaved everything off last night and today the problem is pretty much gone, I really am amazed. I washed my face everyday, used grape seed oil on my beard to keep it soft. I really don't know what else I could have done? All the skin underneath the beard is perfect, but like I said the surrounding skin is and oily mess and disgustingly red. I constantly looked like a had a sunburn with crisco smeared on my face. How can I avoid this the next time I grow it out? This really caused me a lot of emotional distress, as I had no idea my beard was the cause. But within 24 hours of shaving it off, the problem has gone away almost completely. Has this ever happened to anyone, and is there any advice to be given? Thank you.
Any tips on how to tell if your beard needs a wash? I understand that if you are sweating or doing work out, sports etc to wash your beard, but if your someone like me that is not regularly sweating unless it’s hot out how do you tell if you need to wash your beard? How do you know if your beard is telling you it needs to be washed?
You guys have the best beard products and videos! I own several of yall’s products and use them daily (beard wash and co wash three times a week) but as a barber in training, every video on the channel has helped me on my journey immensely! Thank you guys and much love!
I have a question. If you choose to use the beard softener as a leave-in conditioner, should you still also apply beard oil after getting out of the shower and drying off your beard, or would the softener work in the same way?
I wash with a beard wash and softener. I leave this softener in for about 2-3 minutes. Dry it off and apply beard oil and balm. Thank you for this video.
Great vid Eric, for some reason I really liked how "raw" and natural this specific one turned out 🍻👍 Now here's a ? that I wanted to ask for a long time😀 Is it ok to wash your beard daily in case your skin is too oily? I know you guys have said that it's ok to do so if you have a "dirty" job but what about that scenario? Thanks🙏
Glad you enjoyed it. You certainly can watch your beard daily if you need to. Every skin type is different so it's important for you to understand how products affect your body and how to use them appropriately for you. When we make videos, we tend to do it for the general population, but there are always exceptions to every practice. Another thing you may want to consider just using a co-washing technique daily, and washing every few days. A softener will have a very gentle cleanser and won't completely strip the oils from your face. The more you wash, the more oils get stripped away and the more your skin needs to produce oils. So you end up having oily skin. Does that make sense?
@@EricBandholz really appreciate the reply Eric🍻 It does make sense, it's just that sometimes co-washing makes my beard too soft and lose some of the bulk. On the other hand, beard shampoo makes it always look how I want it. So I thought that having an oily skin would help me get away with washing every day or at least every other one. Imagine that if I use more than two drops of beard oil , beard hair tend to look greesy instead of shinny. Also...love you guys for the old money sent🎆 Thanks again for spending time to reply👍👍
when i have the time, i enjoy getting my beard wet in the sink and getting beard softener in my beard and one of those elastic plastic covers you put on tupperware for storing food and i'd would put it over my beard and lounge around a bit around the house for 30 minutes or so and then take a shower, then i'd reapply softener, then wash my beard at the end of the shower, I always save this routine for a relaxing weekend
Oh huh, sounds like a take on the "beard mask" we've talked about before but using Softener instead of Utility Balm. Sounds like a cool technique! Maybe we'll have to do a video on this one. - Jack
haha, i never really thought of it as a mask, its just a good way for me to get the most of using beard softener, because using it for a minute or so towards the end of a shower and washing it out right after, like i think a lot of people use it, i feel like that wont really do what its supposed to
Thanks for the great videos, man! I don't have a beard to wash yet, as I'm just in my second week, but I've been inspired. I'll be documenting my journey too and have committed to a minimum of 6 months.. so hopefully I'll have one to wash as some point. Thanks for the great info, as always!!
Hey man, week 2 is a beard. It really starts at the point you decide to grow - so welcome to the bearded family. :D Good luck with your journey and keep on growing!
My husband has been having a hard time with his beard and not had it for a few months but hasn’t done any of this? It says it’s itchy and looks scaglly. How long (months or weeks) to get to the stage you have your beard is at if never done this process before?
so im pretty confused on the contradiction, i have seen times where you have said you should not use the softener as a leave in and times like this where you can. i been using the conditioner after i wash and leave it in for as long as possible and then rinse out, i found that did not do as much as i needed as i have a very thick and often wirey beard so i need maximum softness and condition where i can get it ( i literally own every product you offer) i also tried leaving it in so i need to know the best way to use this, if i should wash my beard and then while still damp apply the softer and leave it in i have even considered purchasing a conditioner elsewhere but i wan tot cover all ground and make sure im using it right for maximum potential. i avoid using the utility balms or styling for shaping also as they leave my beard white.... even when rubbed into the hand with minimal amount..
I have really thick and coarse beard hair and I condition it every day but I still notice a small section of my beard that feels wiry and dry. What can I do to fix it?
I use the tea tree shampoo & conditioner twice a week. I leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing it out at the end of the shower. I then follow up using the tea tree utility balm & gotta tell you that I LOVE it!! It's a nice cool & refreshing feeling afterwards and the smell is AMAZING... I look forward to every Tuesday & Friday. I'm thinking about getting something from the gold line too... mix it up a bit and enjoy another scent. Beard on Bra!!
Hey its my boy! Eric Bandholz!! Been a while since ive seen you it feels. I got some of your wash from target I believe maybe Walmart cant really remember but I forgot to get the beard softner and man do I regret it. That wash really strips everything out of your beard, literally leaves it squeeky clean and a little dry. Ima have to get some of that softner.
It's been a hot minute since Eric has been in a video, hasn't it? Sounds like you picked up something from our White Line at Target. Really glad you're loving it, man! - Jack
Eric I have a question for ya . A lot of videos say not to wash your beard everyday and to co-wash . When I co-wash it makes my face break out at least 3-4 pimples. But when I wash everyday . My face doesn’t, am I hurting my beard washing every day??? Thx
If you're using a beard wash that was designed to be gentle and work on you face, then you should be fine with daily use. Ultimately, every skin & beard is different and your beard may be fine as well with daily washing. If you don't see split ends, dryness, or breakage of your beard then daily washing is fine. If you do start to notice those things, then maybe you develop a strategy to pull it back a bit.
Love the old money softener and wash. I find that the wash goes a really long way bc it foams up really well. I am able to get away with a tiny drop or two. The softener I find I have to use a little more of to get good coverage. Maybe it's my beard but it just seems to get absorbed and I keep going back for more to work it thru my entire beard. My beard is a little longer than yours in this video but not much long. Keep up the awesome work and great products!
Depends. If you're getting it dirty and nasty everyday; then yes - clean it daily. If you are more of an office guy and don't get it that dirty; then no - clean it as needed.
Great video! I love temple smoke! Lately I've been trying other brands oils but none of them are as efficient or last as long as beard brands. Great work! PS any chance for lumber yard return ?
You can pickup Lumber Yard from Target. If you're located out of USA we'll hope to have it available in international locations, but there aren't any deals in the works yet unfortunately.
Hey can yous do one on beard acne? My first beard, 2 months in and I followed the wash every other day and beard oil in the morning. I am getting acne which I didnt have. Ive started washing daily and now use homemade beard balm, it has settled slightly. I do wash hair every day due to oily hair.
on 2nd sep 18,i shaved my yeard for the first time.it was a beard that was never shaved but was trimmed only with a trimmer.I looked like a Muslim brother. It was soft and a 10% curly. It grew to a really good length.hoping to get a harder beard after first time shave.Again growing a beard.First month about to end
Eric, Thank you so much for the information , I am looking forward to growing and caring for my beard, and now thanks to you and your team this will be allot easier. Thank you also for your very kind demeanor and personality.
I know theres all these beard washes, wax, balms, oils and other hippy stuff, but I've been using 99 cent suave conditioner from Walmart with a hair dryer and a comb and have had great success for well over a year now. It feels soft and people always say "You take care of that thang" Not saying the other stuff don't work, but the method I'm using now sure is saving money and working, haha.
That's awesome to hear. While it may not have always come across in our videos, we've always been big fans of buying products that work for you. Obviously, we hope some of those are Beardbrand; but if not, that's cool with us. Just want guys to invest in themselves and find ways to improve their confidence. Keep on growing!
I bought a hexagonal thingy with soft plastic/rubber bristles on bottom and a ring on top (for your finger). I'm concerned that my nails would cause undue damage, so I figured the thingy (what the hell do you call it?) would be the better/safer option for washing the skin underneath my beard.
That's actually a great thing to use if you don't want to use your fingers. Carlos Costa uses something called the Denman Be-Bop for exfoliating the skin under his beard and what you're describing sounds very similar. - Jack
Beardbrand pretty much. i don't remember the brand. The Bebop's size probably would have been the better choice. However, going through my coarse and curly beard, the one I have is less likely to be dropped.
This would apply to African American beards as well. I agree though, we need to bring a few more faces onto to the channel to help those with really curly beards. I'd say of the regular hosts, Jack probably has the curliest beard.
Definitely Watch Jack Molenko then. Most Italians, Jews and Middle eastern men all have relatively the same type of beard hair (course, curly and crispy) at least to some degree.
Thanks Eric.. But you forgot to mention how often people should wash their beards . I know it's like 2 or 3 times a week. Unless you work in a dirty environment.
If I'm doing this in the shower - how much do I have to worry about getting body soap into my beard? Like, I'll wash my hair, then my face, then my beard and then shave all in the shower. If I'm washing my face and soap in my beard before I do the beard wash, how bad is that for the beard?
Oh, don't worry about that, the small amount of body soap that would get into your beard in your situation won't do anything to the hair. Just make sure you're really getting everything washed out with water. - Jack
zero I used to do that but once I’ve started using the (bulldog) beard conditioner it has made a difference over time, give it few weeks maybe a Month you’ll see the difference.
I use regular shampoo and conditioner and it work just fine my friend... remember those product are a trend, people having beard forever never used those product that were just not existant whatsoever before lol... so go ahead and do what you want really...
That's definitely something you can do, but we recommend using Beard Wash and Softener because we designed them specifically for beard hair and is going to get it cleaner than only using water. - Jack
Up2 Me exactly. I have beardbrand wash and softener. I’ve gone through a few bottles of each. I stopped using it a while back because it didn’t seem to do anything for my beard. I felt I was just wasting my money. Every beard is different. But warm water and the occasional pine tar soap works best for me.
There’s a snake in my beard aside from using regular stuff... I have started to use baking soda recently... 1part baking soda for 3 parts water and I use it every other day on hair and beard... everything look nice and shiny, soft as well. Sound weird I know but seems to work out well. Now I live in Asia for the past 3 years and it is between 60-80% humidity out here just like most of the other countries I have been living in... I never use beard balm not oil either. Maybe I am lucky but I towel dry and use regular hair comb with two side, big teeth and small teeth and take me less then a min to fix my beard in the morning.
Hope y'all enjoyed this one and all is well on the other side of the internet. Love you guys!

I think your length of beard looks really good among many men :)
How often is recommended to wash and condition?
Thanks for the great videos, man! I don't have a beard to wash yet, as I'm just in my second week, but I've been inspired. I'll be documenting my journey too and have committed to a minimum of 6 months.. so hopefully I'll have one to wash as some point. Thanks for the great info, as always!!
Hey man, week 2 is a beard. It really starts at the point you decide to grow - so welcome to the bearded family. :D
Good luck with your journey and keep on growing!
Enjoy the beard Journey, Man! Welcome to the club!
1 year later, hows the beard?
Why use the conditioner if you're going to add a beard oil or utility balm afterwards?
If you leave the softer on your beard 🧔♂️ Does it make it more softer ?
Just waiting for my new gold label beard wash and softener I ordered a couple of days ago to arrive! Good stuff! Great video as usual. Thanks
Coming soon! We think you're really going to dig it!

My husband has been having a hard time with his beard and not had it for a few months but hasn’t done any of this? It says it’s itchy and looks scaglly. How long (months or weeks) to get to the stage you have your beard is at if never done this process before?
If you go back to the beardstache with this mullet that’s gonna be an iconic look man
Full on 1980's style

I just tried lumberjack yard and love it
do you have to cowash or would it fine just to use the beard wash and softener once or twice a week?
Any tips on how to grow one out. i got a very small beard but i would love to have a beard around your length
so im pretty confused on the contradiction, i have seen times where you have said you should not use the softener as a leave in and times like this where you can. i been using the conditioner after i wash and leave it in for as long as possible and then rinse out, i found that did not do as much as i needed as i have a very thick and often wirey beard so i need maximum softness and condition where i can get it ( i literally own every product you offer) i also tried leaving it in so i need to know the best way to use this, if i should wash my beard and then while still damp apply the softer and leave it in i have even considered purchasing a conditioner elsewhere but i wan tot cover all ground and make sure im using it right for maximum potential.
i avoid using the utility balms or styling for shaping also as they leave my beard white.... even when rubbed into the hand with minimal amount..
Good stuff, Eric. I use Beardbrand wash and softener-- bought at Target-- and love it!
They sell it at walmart ?
@@MichaelsExplorations No, I don't think so. Just Target
@@fleotusbing ok thank you !
Thanks so much. That was really helpful.
I don't even have a beard. I just want to know if men wash their beard with shampoo or some sort of special wash.
Is it ok to use hair conditioner on my beard?
I have really thick and coarse beard hair and I condition it every day but I still notice a small section of my beard that feels wiry and dry. What can I do to fix it?
So I can't use a shampoo on my beard but can I use a facewash for my beard?
I use the tea tree shampoo & conditioner twice a week. I leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing it out at the end of the shower. I then follow up using the tea tree utility balm & gotta tell you that I LOVE it!! It's a nice cool & refreshing feeling afterwards and the smell is AMAZING... I look forward to every Tuesday & Friday. I'm thinking about getting something from the gold line too... mix it up a bit and enjoy another scent. Beard on Bra!!
Beard on, man!
I'm new to a beard its been 16 days of growth to itchey and stiff any recommendations in uk please any tips or products would be amazing
- Jack
Love your products and videos man! Keep it up
Ship to Poland???
Thank you. Especially how much to use and how long to leave in. For my beard, conditioner/softener relaxes curls and reduces tangles.
So looking forward to receiving my gold line wash and soften.
New here with beards. So one needs 3 products, head shampoo, face wash and beard shampoo. Difficult to separate face and beard wash.
So the beard conditioner can stay in ? I think i have been making a mistake, i have been leaving it in !! after washing my beard lol.
Great video :D It's nice to have a visual reference on how to correctly use those products ^^
For sure! We're making an effort to try to show whatever we talk about in use.

Do i need to wash my beard everyday?
Depends. If you're getting it dirty and nasty everyday; then yes - clean it daily. If you are more of an office guy and don't get it that dirty; then no - clean it as needed.
Awesome vid man
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comment!
Butter also works great to soften your beard AND is all natural

Can you co wash with the softener?
And can you deep condition with it
You have a gorgeous beard 😍
Eric, Thank you so much for the information , I am looking forward to growing and caring for my beard, and now thanks to you and your team this will be allot easier. Thank you also for your very kind demeanor and personality.
Agora eu entendi este creme e. pra passar na barba
Will this work on the pubic hair cause I was searching on the internet for these answers but only how to remove it
I bought a hexagonal thingy with soft plastic/rubber bristles on bottom and a ring on top (for your finger).
Very nice, thanks a lot 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it man! Thanks for watching
Never thought the day would come that my beard is longer than Erics ;D
I've had some short beards over the past few years. Keep on growing man.
Very nice! Thumb's up buddy!~John
your beard is actually very beautiful.
I always avoid detergents with beard and hair, sulfates, parabens and dyes
would love more content for African american beards. Great channel but I have to keep asking myself, how much of this applies to my beard.
Good call, guys definitely do NOT need to be washing their beards every single day.
so random but how many mm is the necklace
If I'm doing this in the shower - how much do I have to worry about getting body soap into my beard? Like, I'll wash my hair, then my face, then my beard and then shave all in the shower. If I'm washing my face and soap in my beard before I do the beard wash, how bad is that for the beard?
Oh, don't worry about that, the small amount of body soap that would get into your beard in your situation won't do anything to the hair. Just make sure you're really getting everything washed out with water.
- Jack
I use mane and tale shampoo
3 lines of coke and making this video became a good idea.
I don’t have a beard .... but my bf does. I think he might get this as a gift ^_^
Awesome idea! We're sure he'd love this.
- Jack
is washing your beard with beard shampoo required? i just use warm water everyday and apply beard oil or balm. been doing in for almost a year
zero I used to do that but once I’ve started using the (bulldog) beard conditioner it has made a difference over time, give it few weeks maybe a Month you’ll see the difference.
Beardbrand is unfortunately unavailable in India :/
Is it normal to lose hair when I wash my beard?
Yup. I always loose a bunch. -Eric
It's very satisfying
Good Video ! Don’t worry I am giving you the finger 👍🏻. LOL !
Dat Gold Line, doe. 👍
Sweet , I noticed the difference , and I know it smells great .
You've got a good eye man. Thanks for your comments as always.
I went to get something me beard wash and they told me we didn’t know you needed that
