  • This is one in a series of videos to help you improve your pop up technique in and out of the water. It works as a companion video to “Make the Space,” and at-home workout designed to help with the “millisecond push up” before you stand that I advocate for here.
This video is me voicing over 1-2 take offs that I replay in slow motion and extra slow motion so that you can understand how to get your head, shoulders, and chest up high enough for your legs to come under your body in one fluid motion. If the wave is steep you DO NOT want to hold this position for longer than a millisecond!!! Knowing whether you’re in early enough to have the time to make this adjustment is crucial and that will come with time, study, and in-water coaching aimed to help you judge waves more accurately more of the time.
There are no hacks for a decent pop up. You need to get into the wave with sufficient speed and timing. Do the millisecond push up to clear head and shoulders while keeping your eyes down the line. Then move into your stance and take your hands off the board, especially if you’re going frontside. Remember that once you master this there are a zillion stances to pop up into (ok, more like 4-6) and you’ll know which is appropriate through trial, error, and coaching/good feedback from better surfers.
    Get out there!
Here I’m riding my 7’6” Barahona “Tiburon” in Costa Rica. For those who have an issue with me not wearing a leash, please see “Leashes Unleashed” in the Pita Wraps playlist!
