Vegan Peanut Butter Pasta
This peanut butter pasta can be made in the morning before a full surf day or right when you get back from the beach! And just because it’s vegan doesn't mean that omnivores won’t love it too! Plants are good for everyone! Athletes like surfers can metabolize carbs like pastas just fine. If you’re a sedentary surfer I’d save this dish for surf trips or periods when you’re more active.
Ingredients Base:
1 package of any noodle pasta (can be whole grain or gluten free if you like)
1 head leafy green veg (I use bok choy here), chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 carrots, grated
1 bag edamame
1 block firm tofu
Ingredients Sauce:
1/2 cup peanut butter (crunchy or smooth are fine)

Virtual Coaching vs In Water Coaching
Просмотров 535 дней назад
In this video I go over which kind of coaching - virtual or in-water - might be the best fit for you. This is a hard one because the more coaching you get, the better that your surfing is going to be. So, both is the best! But what is most reasonable for you? In this day and age it’s a no brainer to get some kind of virtual coaching Virtual coaching is really great for intermediates and advance...
Beginner 1.0 - 3.0

In this video I go over what I view to be the three main levels of beginner surfing. In these phases you’re not turning the board at all. Pay attention to videos that have to do with wave judgment and riding on your belly. Then focus on videos about the pop up. Beginner 1.0 - 00:30-1:30. Literally you don’t anything about surfing for the most part. New to the culture. Maybe had 1-2 lessons on v...
Standing Out and Fitting In
Просмотров 729 дней назад
In this video I go over Georg Simmel’s theory that “standing out” is a form of “fitting in.” This is just important to keep in mind any time you think that one of your aesthetic choices is particularly unique. So in the surfing context, if you’re picking an old school longboard because you don’t want to be like peole who are obsessed with shortboarding, just know that there are zillions of peop...
What To Know When Buying Your First Board
Просмотров 11512 дней назад
Here’s another spicy one. What should you get as your first surfboard? First of all, you need it to float you, so err on the side of too big rather than too small. Second, if you can get a high end soft top (see video on soft tops), like Mick Fanning, Surf Tech, or Crime Surfboards, then I think it’s a good idea. These boards have shape to them and should be treated like a “real” surfboard. But...

How to Put on Soft Racks for Travel
Просмотров 4313 дней назад
In this video I go over how to put on soft racks for travel. Should you travel with soft racks? Not necessarily. Sometimes just one longer rack strap will do. But if I know that I’m renting a smaller car and transporting longboards, I think these are a pretty great investment. Thanks for watching! Make sure you like and subscribe. Make the Space

This is one in a series of videos to help you improve your pop up technique in and out of the water. It works as a companion video to “Millisecond Push Up,” and is designed to help with the “milliscecond push up” before you stand that I advocate for. If you have any issues with your pop up you need this exercise in your routine! The whole point of this at-home surf-specific exercise is to train...

Pita Wrap: Leashes Unleashed
Просмотров 7823 дня назад
I expect this one is going to wrankle some feathers. I get lots of comments about how “irresponsible” it is to show videos wherein I’m not wearing a leash. So I thought that the issue of wearing leashes deserves a video all to itself! Here are some of the main points I make in the video: 00:37 training without a leash in very, very small waves when no one is out can be productive 00:54 leashes ...
How to Wax a Board Tropical Edition
Просмотров 7426 дней назад
As with the How to De-Wax Your Board video, this may seem obvious for the experienced surfer. My dad taught me how to do it, so if you don’t have dad or a mentor who has been surfing their whole life, you might find yourself surfing the web for answers. Believe it or not, wax and how to wax your board can be a polarizing issue in surfing. When I was taught to do it my dad used paraffin or candl...
How to De Wax a Board

This might be an obvious one for the intermediate and advanced surfers out there, but unless you have a longtime surfer in your corner, it might not be on your radar as a beginner. In this video I go through how to take your wax of your surfboard. In this case I was in Barbados transitioning my cold water (NY winter) wax coat to surf in tropical waters. Situations when you want to change your w...
Pita Wrap: What Is Surfing?
Просмотров 92Месяц назад
What is surfing? Hot take: not standing up on a board! Lots of people have “stood up before,” but to me that does not count as “surfing.” What is surfing then? First and foremost its an ability to access the green wall of the wave at will, and it doesn’t really matter whether you’re on your feet or not. Key Moments 00:28 Standing is only “one kind of surfing” 00:38 My definition of surfing 1:10...
Whoa.....my man is dropping them jewels. I see you.
Nice tips!
Thanks for the videos
You’re very welcome!
A tip that I was shown is to unfold a paper clip and attach it to the string loop to help pull it through the hole
That could work if the string will wrap on the paper clip. I have never had a situation where a flathead and fin key didn’t work. Just for whatever reason not all leash strings are created equal! Some go right through. Others are stubborn.
Funny story I drove over my own kayak roof rack strap causing thousands in damages to my car 😂
Oooof!!!
Yahoo~outstanding uploading-have a nice day~🖖
what are your thoughts on surf camps?
Great question and I think I'll have to do a video on this! There are many things meant by "surf camp." For example in Oaxaca, MX you basically have to go to a "camp" just to surf. That doesn't mean there's instruction. It's just that to surf certain waves you have to stay there at the camp on the break. So that's camps part 1. If it's a learn to surf camp then I think my advice in this video applies. You would want to ask them if they're surf school like or coaching like or some kind of hybrid between the two. Some people do like the hybrid approach where they get more reps on the waves by being pushed but then they take the training wheels off a bit and try for their own waves. I think pushing is never necessary, especially for adults, so I would personally steer away from any surf education that involves pushing full grown ass adult humans into waves. Hope this helps. Thank you for the fantastic question.
So thankful for you as a coach! Your emphasis on studying the ocean and fitness was so crucial to making progress.
Thanks dude! I appreciate you!
Never mind. The answer is in the video
How many repetitions do you advise
Thanks
Thanks
Welcome!
Haha shots fired at Skipper.
Only a surfer knows the feeling. 😏
Nice logo
the pickle is the best :) I also did a vid on this stripping & waxing my longboard on my channel and stripped off a HUGE ball of wax! it was massive and probably weighed a ton! lol!
man... I de-waxed some boards for dion last yr and those longboards took forever! There was so much wax in the garbage bins that the smell got pretty gnarly
love the intro and outros🤙
Thanks Leo! Channel reboot is in full effect.
@@conatussurfI look forward to more videos!
Nice,.... Thank you!
Is this a single fin?
Tri fin
such a great video. I've really been focusing on this lately particularly in my shortboarding. this has EXACTLY been my goal - less paddle effort to get into the waves & better positioning, setup, & projection.
Thanks for your comment! Sorry I've been MIA on here. Lots of great stuff coming down the line this summer. Make sure you're subscribed! Yew!
such a good video
Thank you!
Could this apply to an 8’4
Can apply to most boards. The key is understanding where the tail is and getting back there to do the turn!
Nice a video but turned off by the stupidity of not wearing a leash…wear a god dang leash!!! You are putting others at risk .Why be so irresponsible?
There will be a full video on my leash philosophy in the near future. I am an expert surfer and I never surf w/out a leash in conditions where I may lose my board. In this session I lost my board 0 times. I would never surf w/out a leash in conditions I could lose my board, but there will be a full video on this. If you don't like it, can't help ya, but I'm not going to wear a leash when it's not necessary for me to.
Great video! Another thing I’ve noticed from years of surfing is the longer the board the more time it takes to get the board down. Great suggestion on the knee thing never thought about that. My favorite board is a 5”0 26L, I’m 167 lbs. For some reason my 28L epoxy 5”10 board just feels very hard on diving deep consistently.
Good point! Thanks!
Duck diving will work if you are using a board that for every litre x 2kg of body weight, 80kg person can duck dive a 40 litres board no problem, my fish is 39.7 litres, I am 90kg and duck dive it no problems on any size I am brave enough to go out on 👍🏻 don’t forget that buoyancy is different in a pool than in the ocean. So you may be able to duck dive in a pool but not as effectively in the ocean.
Yeah I also like to use others' platforms to espouse my own views instead of creating my own channel. LOL.
I agree it’s nice to share ideas and have open discussions 👍🏻 that’s the beauty of the surfing community.
@@aussiert touche. To be more honest only post and don't consume on YT (unless you count goth karaoke via my personal account).
Form and timing is important -- I'm only 68kg and easily duck dive 46 liters step up with medium wide nose shape. Over the years the forms shown in the video become faster, better timed, and more sending nature. Thanks for the slow motion underwater shots and dive variations.
Ive watched this video like 50x and it’s so goddamn valuable. The breakdown, everything just makes sense. This helped as I’m sizing down from a longboard to a 7’0
Thanks!!!
Pretty cool, thanks for your tips and tuition ..🤙yeww
Thanks for the comment!
Exited to try this whith my 5,4 foam bozrd
Was it hard to paddle out back to back to back?
Not really!
Thank you. 🤙
No problem 👍
I’m goofy footed, so obviously my leash is on my left. However, when duck diving it feels natural to push the board down with my right knee/foot, and kick left leg (with the leash) up. Is this incorrect? Like will the wave catch the leash and pull me back?
Doesn’t matter which foot you use. I personally use right if knee dive and left if foot dive. Just peculiar to me. No rationale.
Hi, thank you for this video, indeed very helpful. What volumes are your two boards?
I don’t pay attention to volume as a measure. I will make a video about why not.
Tons of great tips/info in here for a NY/NJ surfer. Thanks for making it
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for subscribing. I really appreciate it. If you want more weekly tips on surfing our area be sure to check my weekly zines out: dion.subkit.com -- enjoy all this swell we're about to get!
This was really helpful. Been debating on getting a solo shot. You still recommend? Any other options? Thanks a ton
Hey dude! Thanks for subscribing and commenting! So. Man. Solo shot. It's a long drama. I would say that presently I'm a little bummed out about them. I haven't used my camera in almost a year now. It works (i think), but I've had a bad experience with their customer service and repairs department. They held my camera for 5 months then sent it back w/out fixing anything. They are extremely inundated with work and they have no direct competitors. This is an example of monopolies not working to spark change. But if this is the ONLY way for you to get footage of yourself (and if you want to get better at surfing you neeeeeed footage of yourself), then it is worth it. The other thing you can do is buy a consumer level handy cam and hire a photographer or a friend to get some footage of you. This can be dicey/unreliable, but I find that it does work on surf trips. For example, when I go to places like Costa Rica or Mexico I pay locals to use my gear and shoot me with it. That way I get access to my clips immediately and don't have to worry about slow internet speeds in foreign countries. Make sense? If you want to chat more about this you can always schedule a 15 min consult call on my website: www.conatussurfclub.com -- thanks!
Looks challenging getting a backhand tube. Good sponge wave tho!
It's actually an easy tube both frontside and backside. Issue on days like this are the human beings getting sucked over your head in the lip or crossing your path in the impact zone. I'm goofy foot and had a nice handful of made tubes this day, especially before my filmer got there. She also left early. So not a bad showing for 45 minutes of filming!
Do you have a video of this encounter you had ? Also curious what kind of surfboard you and the others were riding. Sometimes conflicts can arise when handful of surfers crowd a jetty but it’s mix boards where longboards usually have advantage for example
I have video of the entire incident. It's a long a saga that has nothing to do with surfboards (except that we're all riding them lol). I've been holding back posting it to YT. I run a subscription newsletter: dion.subkit.com and that's where I first posted the vid. It's also what this video was made for in case context seems a little off for YT. I go into greater detail about all things surfing over at the newsletter (drops every Friday evening EST). One day I will release the video of what does border on assault. Only in NY will a person who has been surfing a spot for 15+ years be harassed by someone who has been surfing it for 1-3 years. It's a very odd thing about NY surfing culture.
don't forget Joyce
Right on!!!
Really like what you're doing: the commentary is most excellent. thanks! and, oh: i'd love to see you surf and talk about surfing a *really* crowded spot and the whole psychology of the pack and how to deal with it. sure, you could go find a less crowded spot but it'd be more fun and helpful to see you really mixing it up, in average-sized every-day waves. just an idea, from someone who has to surf in crowds all the darn time. keep up the good work!
Thanks for the nice note! So funny your comment made me really think hard about when I might get this footage for people like you, and honestly I rarely surf super duper crowded waves. I tend to avoid it all together/try to put myself in life situations where I am forced to surf crowded waves to get a daily fix. A big part of my turn towards surf specific diet and fitness is that for shitty or overly crowded surf days I'm just as well off doing a workout and waiting for a time I either have time to find an empty peak or when it's just less crowded. So one take on crowds might be how to best avoid them and get in the space for avoiding them. That said it does get crowded here in NY and I will surf in crowds from time to time. I will be super mindful about thinking about that and trying to get evidence of it next time it happens!!!
@@conatussurf rockin. thanks!
Great vid - slo mo & commentary. Well done. I debate on whether the dive or turtle roll is better for me personally - but since the roll is guaranteed to kill the forward momentum (and takes so much damn energy to get back up and on the board) I'm going with the dive for now and trying to get really goo at it, so I appreciate the vid. I'm 5'9", 165 lbs and ride a 7'6" CI Mid @ 52L so it's not easy getting it deep enoughf but I found a little trick that works for me and just wanted to share. I find a kind of '2 stage' dive works pretty good -- it's obviously not a John-John level 2 stage dive, but I focus heavily on the nose and sinking it just a tad more during the stab forward. So, after initially sinking the nose like normal, when I press down the tail instead of 'leveling the board' and stabbing it forward like a normal dive, I stab the nose down just a tad again, like a 2nd dive, and obviously not as steep of an angle like the first time, but NOT level ... just a tad below the level plane. It seems to help get me just that tab bit further under the wave's energy into cleaner water which is really needed b/c I wasn't deep to begin with. Then, when the wave's white water / cylinder / energy inevitably rolls over me and pushes the tail of the board down it's as though it's leveling the board for me b/c the board was slightly pointed down from the 2nd stage of the dive. As the wave's main energy vortex has now rolled over me, I'm leveled out, I'm deeper than I would have been w/out this little trick and I typically get a little boost "kick out" from the wave's cylinder and slightly pushes me out farther as I come back up. The key is taking a little more time in the beginning to sink the nose as far as possible, so I have to start the dive earlier than normal. But, if I can time the initial dive right, then that 2nd little dive/stab makes a world of difference. When it works, it works fantastic.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply and additional tip. Definitely one of the things that cannot be simulated in a pool is the help we get from the waves curvature and force. One commonality I notice in your account, however, is that no good duckdive can be performed w/out radical control of the tail of the board, whether that be pushing it down further or leveling it out in stages as you report. If the surfer is unaware of the tail, even in the moments of the dive when the lower body disengages from the board, the dive will inevitably go "ass up" lol and the wave will smack the ass and pull the surfer back. All kinds of ways that tucking our butts in helps advance our surfing.
Sick day!
Awesome video! thanks
Glad you liked it!
i just want to say thank you for this vid and the whole middy series! and i would like to buy you a few beers (if i could hehe)
