- Yesterday we went out to Youngstown to check out their jailbar Thunderbolt downtown, and the test was complete with a few surprises.
First, YSU's 1212's did chimes at 11:57; and at 12:00 a steam whistle at the Whistle & Keg restaurant next to us sounded which scared the crap out of us but was awesome enough that I included it in the video before the Thunderbolt starts up, you can also see pictures of the steam whistle in the Intro.
This is one of three remaining active jailbars in the county, installed in 1953 as part of the Civil Defense siren system for Mahoning County and Youngstown. The system consisted of 53 sirens, which were Thunderbolts and Model 7's. In 1991, most of these sirens were in disrepair and began to be replaced with the Whelen system, with the installation of several WPS 4000-4 units in 1991. At that time, all remaining working CD sirens were equipped with Whelen radios and left to run until they died or the buildings they were on came down. Currently, there are four Thunderbolts left, 3 in Youngstown and one in Boardman. The Thunderbolts in Youngstown at City Hall and Eagle Heights Academy sound but do not rotate, the other at U-Haul rotates but does not sound. The Boardman Thunderbolt has been dead for a long time, and has been replaced by a "finback" Whelen Vortex which sits just a few hundred feet away.
I was joined by Bruin and Cameron for this test, as well as another local enthusiast, and we had a great time. This test was also the day before my 20th birthday, which happens to be today.
Youngstown/Mahoning County tests their sirens every Saturday at noon for one minute, weather-permitting. Enjoy!
