Married 12 years and I fully endorse Bishop Barron's message. To the extent my wife and I place God first in our lives, our marriage is like experiencing Heaven on earth. In the times we fail to put God first, life can get very hard and we begin to turn on one another. A marriage without God is like an airplane that loses its wings.
@wolf175 Come on, man, that's so simple-minded and unfair. Some of the greatest commentators on baseball never actually played the game, and some of the best military historians and tacticians were never soldiers. Attend, please, to the arguments I'm making and judge whether they're true or false. That's all that matters. And I could introduce you to lots of married people who would much rather go to a priest for counselling, precisely because he's more objective.
I will add, thank you God for people like you who knows the word of God and who knows how to help others understand it. I am not even Catholic but you make sense and I am so glad to have found you. You have guided me in my search for the true loving God.
Thanks and blessings on your ministry Fr. Barron! You've been a model for me as I embark on my own journey in the priesthood. I'll continue to keep you in prayer as you continue the good work in the Lord's vineyard. Ad Multos Annos!
There is no such thing as being "married to the church". Aren't you the same zealots yelling about how the only true marriage is" between one man and one woman"? You can't even argue without contradicting yourselves, it's embarrassing.
I'm not lecturing, I'm simply pointing out a direct contradiction. By your own definition, the concept of being "married" to the church or to Jesus is absurd on its face.
I'm a Catholic and am engaged to be married next year. Fr Barron, though your answer is a standard answer to "Why do you wish to be married in a Catholic Church?", your answer is very strong and true. I want to find the fullness in my eventual marriage, and this continues to help me direct myself to God rather than just the two of us. Great work Fr Barron. Hope your talks in World Youth Day will be recorded and reposted on RUclips.
father, i'm a struggling Catholic, however, your insight and knowledge helps me realize there is hope for me...its difficult, yes, but we all must "bear our cross"...much appreciated devoted fan
Thank God for this message. as a person who was molested as a child, I never liked the thought of marriage because I had problems accepting motherhood. As a christian, cohabiting was not an option. I bought my copy of Three To Get Married early this year. I read and prayed. I read and prayed. I read and prayed. God is faithful. I got a new mind on the subject of marriage. Marriage is not about me, it is about God's purposes. Oh, might I add that I am not catholic; however, I cannot begin to explain the impact of teachings such as yours, and Ven. Sheen's on my life. Thank you, and keep doing what you do.
Exactly what you are saying in this vedio is what I told a young couple just a week ago, I refered them to Jesus words, Met10:37, God's will between the two has to come first before our own wills, in saying we have to love Him more than the other partner He is not taking anything away, but in loving Him more He teaches us how to better love our partners more than we did the first time.
@spryrambro It's both/and, not either/or. God shapes our wills by luring them. He doesn't "control" us; he beguiles us into doing what will make us happiest.
Thank you! This is how to build a lasting relationship! Living it for the last 14 years and on into the future. Us Millennials as a group need to take note! 💪
God Bless Married in Church for 22 years this coming June. Jesus is Center of our Marriage. Amen. And we rare in love every day with HIM and with Each Other and make a difference. in the world.
I absolutely agree!!! Thanks!!! That’s the story of me and my husband. We met in the beautiful United States. We met our Transcendent third. And together, the three of us have raised 8 children, and 2 more that are waiting for us in Heaven. God bless you, bishop Pray for us 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you, Bishop Barron, for your useful and interesting videos. It was actually by watching a video you posted about relationships that I joined a Catholic dating agency and met my beautiful wife! I hope and pray that your wonderful work may continue, and that many others may benefit. God bless.
Gosh I just feel blessed so much every time I listen to a new video by Fr. Barron. I am thankful to God so much for all the articles, videos, sermons the Holy Spirit has put in his pastoral work. Thank You Jesus, Thank you Father Barron. Bob, Jerusalem Palestine
Beautiful for sure. If only I suppose had come to know this truth, say 50 years ago. But, alas, today is more beautiful because I can see how much more this truth means. The sky has become more clear. May his Grace and Peace be with you FRB/BRB!
So true! When my ex and I were praying together, were loving God together, I felt like we were so strong and our relationship could endure. But when I fell away, that's when everything crumbled.
It is a covenant and not a contract. It's a higher standard. It is a commitment to love another more than one's self. Losing the ego will provide the ultimate freedom.
I think God should be involved in every marriage. Remember when Jesus went to a wedding at Cana with his mother, his apostles and his mother Mary said, "They have no more wine." And Jesus said to her, "Why does this concern you. My hour has not yet come." And eventually he did. He had 6 water jars filled up and he turned the water into wine. He saved the wedding ceremony. His mother Mary also said, "Do whatever he tells you." As for me, I have a girlfriend that I seriously love and she is determined to marry me. And if I do this right, I have to find her ring size and make sure it's not sterling silver because she's allergic. And plus I have tell my mom about and her parents too. So if anyone sees this comment, please only positive feed back.
Bishop Barron this is GOOD NEWS! Thank you sooo much, now I can continue to pray for my future husband for him to fall in love with God, Mama Mary so we both can relate and understand in God and each other! Awesome!♥️😊✨✨
Your are right Father, when I got married 12 yrs ago, I never thought of all these, although my spouse and I are very much imperfect, but we compromise and came back forcefully with God's help, in prayer and penance, then everything went back to "order" our marriage was convalidated (2010 Divine mercy Sunday)in Catholic church in obedience to the Priest in the confessional and it brought us so much peace in our life, through marriage in 4 because we consecrate our marriage to the Mother Mary.
thank you so much father barron .my wife and I are recently married .1 year ago we came into the catholic faith together and now we want to start a ministry for married couples in this is indeed the framework with which we want to work .GOD bless you
Join into the Marriage Encounter Geoup at your Parrish It is good to attend the classes first with the more experienced Catholic marriage couples and priests as the mentors. After attending, ask about full participation in the set up classes to be a part of the mentors
I greatly appreciated this synthesis Father. It certainly resonates with my seventeen years experience of marriage. Greetings to all from New Zealand and the peace of Christ on us all.
Bishop Barron, I have a request. Publish this talk as a book to be given to young people when they are in high school. What you described is very excellent advice that young people need to know before going to college. Thank you and God bless.
Bishop Barron this is among your BEST RUclips commentary video. All young couples should view and study this teaching before thinking of marriage. When I think of any couple that has had a long successful marriage, they tend to fit this "transcendent third" formula. Yet doesn't this concept go back even further than Aristotle - all the way back to the Book of Genesis when God created man and woman? When God said "...it is not good for man to be alone" and created woman from man's rib, wasn't God actually the implied "third" entity right then, too? I think so.
Wow! I just found someone to love…………YOU, Fr. Barron! This video is truly one of your best! Thank you for all of these videos and please don't stop making them! They have deepened my faith and fanned the flame of my Love for Christ! God BlessYou!
Thank you Bishop for this educative video. In my ministry as Priest, I am interested in questions of marriage since I have realized that successful married life is necessary for the good of human society.
After dating and getting nowhere I finally asked God to help me find a good Christian man. I met my husband and didn't think he was the one but once I could see that he too was a believer I really fell for him. We are happily married and continue to believe in God.
So wonderful to hear this in a nutshell, even though we've read Fulton Sheen's book many years ago, it rings true again when our children are at a marriageable age. this is easy to share!
A wonderful advice on marriage Father. This video would have been a great addition to our topic today which was about family and relationships. The transcendent third and God's role on that between the couples, that's kinda a new thing for me. Something worth remembering.
We looked at this post to try and understand why some Catholics seem to view marriage that's different from our view and most of friends - it is clear you see marriage as inclusive commitment which includes an entity (God) why we see it very much as an exclusive spiritual commitment to each other - thanks for helping us understand your perspective
I believe that God puts people in our lives for all kinds of reasons. For me, I have prayed through the Blessed Mother to intercede for me to find someone I can love and be loved by. In hopes that same person loves God and the Catholic Church as much as I do. As, I mentioned before, God does put people in your lives for other reasons as well. Sometimes...it's just a homeless person who has not eaten all day and your kindness is feeds that person which brings that person hope and the thought thar God does love them. God works wonders..even as small as showing love and kindness to someone you do not even know..
continued- it has multiple manifestations. Those called to marriage find that answering this vocational call empowers them to do God's work more joyfully and abundantly. As Father Barron has reminded us continually, love is not an emotion or passion, but a response of the will, willing the good of the other as other. Homosexuals, as well as Heterosexuals, are call equally to the vocation of Married life, a life that glorifies God in togetherness.
I admit that I am single Practicing Catholic not in a relationship but have lots of friends and I am perfectly happy.. I think Fr. Barren is correct in saying Love alone will not hold a Marriage together I have seen to many try and fail because Love alone is not enough. common sense
you just agreed with fr. when you said "friends have shared interests." In christian marriage, this shared interest isnt a something, it is a someone(God).
You're right. They should. The translation even uses smoother words to describe this give and take relationship which sounds slightly abrupt in the english translation. The quote in the bible you originally mentioned is emphasizing that 1 member of a heterosexual relationship should never use dishonest means to withhold from his or her spouse. This is one of the few quotes from the bible I agree with.
Thanks Father, this has really made me think about my own situation. I'm being wooed by a man who's not religious, just reminds me I really need to pray about it, and maybe reconsider...
I am not devout Catholic, I just watched the video again, and re read my comment from 5 months ago, basically what i get from this is: "IF the ideology, WHATEVER that may be, is STRONG enough, AND the SAME, THEN it will last." As he basically summarizes at the end of video starting at 5:24. He bills it as it has to be centered around God, 'the third' has to be that, & I am saying that it is the principle, that can help make it easier, it does not specifically HAVE to be God.
Excellent video, Father! And it resonates very deeply with me. We attended a pre-Cana program that had Three to Get Married as it's theme and it was incredibly beneficial, accurate and life-changing.
I want to get married, but religious counseling is needed for both of us. We are both Catholic, but we see the church from two entirely different perspectives. All I can do is pray to our Lord that our beliefs come together for the greater good.
@Trev S God provides us with all good things as He shepherds us through this fallen, broken, lost world. Sometimes He puts us through the fire to refine us. This world is the obstacle course we must all negotiate, walking by faith and not by sight. We don't curse God because of how much this world is suffering. We accept this suffering world for what it is because our final destination is so much brighter than this current darkness.
I'm sorry friend, but that is simply an asinine remark. You'd have a point if I were giving advice on sexual technique. But an unmarried person has absolutely nothing to say about the morality and spirituality of marriage?!
There are several tips for saving your marriage Try to communicate more Help each other out more Start to give and take more (I discovered these and the reasons they work on Mirykal marriage plan website )
Not, he has a lot to teach us through his knowledge of God. I am married and I understand that God is the key to a solid Christian marriage. In truth God is all we need to have purposeful relationships with those He put in our paths.
friendships rooted in 'something' deeper than themselves are more meaningful, and longer lasting. I think you can probably (maybe not?!?) see the logic in my comment. it clearly doesnt only apply to marriage. christian friendship is rooted in 'someone (God)' as i said, you proved Fr. Barron's point. enough said really.
I think the idea of the "Transcendent Third" is the key to understanding the love of the Trinity as a perfect divine love, as opposed to a binitarian understanding of God.
Return to our 1st Love and ask God who He wants you to be one with anorher to share His fulness of love wirh to draw others into His family, the church!
Respond to this video... But all of this is much ado about nothing! If I'm making a valid point about marriage (and you agree that I am), then why does anyone care whether it's a celibate man who's making it?
Catholic Church gives more important to the marriage and relationship one of my Friend who was having relationships with a Protestant guy who proposed her..and their relationship continued he used talk to her about God and promises she thought dat he is very spiritual and kind later on after he got a better proposal from a rich girl he married to a Protestant girl...sad thing he told my Friend dat she is not faithful coz of dat she cannot please got and she couldn’t get married to him.. Is there anything like dis Bishop Barron can God promise and can’t do it???
@powderdd I can't imagine the goal of becoming truly one with the will of God leading to anything besides real, eternal happiness. As such, the two goals are synonymous.
When I realised I loved my wife and wanted to be with her for the rest of my life - that was the moment when I became "married". You could say the sun went down one evening and in the morning when I woke up I was married. "Marriage" in it's more usual definition to me is just a ceremony of public advertising. It is primarily a way of just telling the rest of the world what I already knew. It is also a good time for a party and for the women to buy new hats but the essence remains that it is an "after the Lord Majors Show" event - if you see what I mean. In no way did the ceremony of marriage change or add or create anything that I didn't already know.
FaithandReason101 In the English language, words do change meaning. We often re-define the meaning of words. Many new words are also added to the English language every year. Isn't it wonderful then how our language develops as do our thoughts and morals - unlike the Catholic Church...."Yeah, let it be known that the word "marriage" shall meaneth and only meaneth ... blah, blah, blah blah, blah").
To get married in a Catholic church is to celebrate the incarnation of God's love in the Catholic Church.....presumably they have experienced God's love through Christ before marriage ...not through Aristotle.
I like this!! The first 1:20 is fabulous. Never thought about love or enduring meaningful relationships that way before. Love this video! But what about two agnostics, who have a relationship based on a common vision and a goal that goes beyond the two people, also? I am intrigued, Fr. Barron!
"By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." -Socrates
This made me laugh....because its true.

Thank you for the great advice, Father! I hope to practice this in my future relationship
The way I see, the Third is the eye witness, high priest, chancellors, guardian, peace maker, provider, life support of the relationship.
Good sermon ❤❤❤
I think the idea of the "Transcendent Third" is the key to understanding the love of the Trinity as a perfect divine love, as opposed to a binitarian understanding of God.
I belong to the syro malankara rite of the church..our liturgy explains the love relation between the church and god in the sacrament of marriage.
You are absolutely wonderful. Thank you so very much:)
Return to our 1st Love and ask God who He wants you to be one with anorher to share His fulness of love wirh to draw others into His family, the church!
Very insightful.
This is great, thank you
I going take next few days focus back on prayer sessions yes my old and my mother who’s 82?caught covert ❤
Son ❤😂
Wow, awesome!
@powderdd I can't imagine the goal of becoming truly one with the will of God leading to anything besides real, eternal happiness. As such, the two goals are synonymous.
I want this, Father Barron
When I realised I loved my wife and wanted to be with her for the rest of my life - that was the moment when I became "married". You could say the sun went down one evening and in the morning when I woke up I was married. "Marriage" in it's more usual definition to me is just a ceremony of public advertising. It is primarily a way of just telling the rest of the world what I already knew. It is also a good time for a party and for the women to buy new hats but the essence remains that it is an "after the Lord Majors Show" event - if you see what I mean. In no way did the ceremony of marriage change or add or create anything that I didn't already know.
good thing words do have meaning, and we do not all make up our own definitions for words...oh wait...i think that is exactly what you are doing.
Well done Bishop 🙏🙏
Fabulous, It's so true.
To get married in a Catholic church is to celebrate the incarnation of God's love in the Catholic Church.....presumably they have experienced God's love through Christ before marriage ...not through Aristotle.
Aristotle's teaching is being used as a starting point to further understand the Catholic teaching
I like this!! The first 1:20 is fabulous. Never thought about love or enduring meaningful relationships that way before. Love this video! But what about two agnostics, who have a relationship based on a common vision and a goal that goes beyond the two people, also? I am intrigued, Fr. Barron!
Amaizing!
