@Roger Mills Never missing mass doesn't mean a person is holy. One could be in the church but daydreaming. You can be "immune" to mortal sin if you cling to God and regularly receive the sacraments. This means you're actually present and participating in mass, and also going to confession often. And of course, prayer.
The best homily I've heard on marriage. 48 years later through hard times and easier times it is truly a great gift from God. Bishop, you encourage so much with your content and style. May God continue to bless you and give you many years of service to our needy world.
48 years with my spouse. Bishop Barron points out there are three in the marriage bond. Man, Women and God. I tell people that if God is not part of our marriage we would have left each other on several occasions. He was there to pull us back into our friendship. A lot of that glue is our Catholic faith.
Well said! I’m publishing a weekly RUclips video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. Having brownies and ice cream while watching Bishop Barron is pure bliss 😋. At the end I had this realization looking at the the Bishop on screen, that he was someone’s son, that he came about through the love of his parents and them entering into this union under God that bore it’s fruit of children that now play a pivotal part in the community (especially with Robert Barron, imparting us with such great wisdom and knowledge). Marriage as a vocation. Never thought about it in those terms but have often commented how marriage takes work. Truly great perspective! Thanks Bishop Barron!

I'd tried to work things out logically, both for myself and past relationships, yet everything failed. I used to whine about God not bringing my soulmate to my life despite my efforts. Then I realized in the Genesis, Adam didn't whine about being single, then God put him in a deep sleep and "sleeping" in the Bible indicates "not paying attention". Huge appreciation. Hope you know that Catholic Church is not a denomination. You will certainly be richer for exploring it. Meanwhile stay blessed, as always☆
Even further than the two people coming together under the guidance of God and producing children, this gospel passage also depicts the children, who are produced by the parents, running full force towards Christ, who accepts them whole-heartedly. Christ is so accepting of children. Let us too welcome the children into our lives and ultimately bring them towards Christ through proper education, which is necessarily caring, loving, and intellectually guided by the wisdom of the Church.
I’m fully drawn in when Bishop Barron speaks. My sister was watching me listen to him , she asked, “who are you listening to”? I told her Bishop Barron. She said, “ you should see the look on your face” ! Lol , way to go Bishop .
So true. The fact that people put their individual rights before everything in this age and time may be responsible for many marriages ending in divorce. Everone is trying to pull the blanket their way by expecting their spouse to make them happy rather than the contrary. This is the hardness of heart because of which Moses allowed divorce in the Old Testament. Certainly Christain partners who put Jesus- Agape at the center of their marriage stand a better chance to stay together in a self-giving, happy relationship.
"A good marriage is a sweet association in life: full of constancy, trust, and an infinite number of useful and solid services and mutual obligations" (Michel de Montaigne)

What also makes a marriage long lasting is the realisation that God has brought you together: God has chosen this person to be your spouse, and so it is your vocation and your mission to love that person even if they are so horrendous and horrible, for every person is a gift; the knowledge that God has called you to love that person, and the knowledge that God sent that person to you and for you, and also you to that person, will give you strength on your journey and in your mission to love and evangelise to your own spouse and family. To separate from such a person in divorce would be a demolition of the plan of God in your life and in the life of your spouse and his kingdom. God bless you too Bishop Barron! And viva el Papa! God bless our Pope Francis!

Thank you Bishop Barron. As Jesus says, "love one another as I have loved you," we are not meant to focus on ourselves for the sake of our own progress, but we are called to build one another in love and charity, and hence a marriage is not about a self-affirming bond between individuals free from consequences, it is always meant to build the inner community; the family, the children, and the neighbors outside.

Beautiful exegesis which lays out why marriage for us Catholics must never be diluted for the convenience of the secular world. I was the reader at Mass today and, as a married person, what a privilege it was. Thank you, Bishop Barron, for one of your gems.
Discernment is not a choice between good and evil, but often a choice between the good and the best. What is best for you is your proper vocation. From the book "To Save a Thousand Souls" by fr Brett Brannen Who Will You Bring With You Into Heaven? I once heard a priest tell his vocation story. I grew up in a very close, devout Catholic family with loving parents and we prayed together as a family every day. I attended a Catholic school with wonderful teaching Sisters and everything in my life revolved around the Church. I lived in a very Catholic culture. I was the number one altar server, the star student, and a leader in my class. Because of this, and the fact that I loved being around the parish, serving and helping out the priests, everyone would say the same thing, “You will be a priest when you grow up. Won’t you?” I heard this constantly from the other kids in my class, from the sisters who taught me, and from the two assistant priests, who were always visiting the classes and interacting with me around the church. But I never heard it from the pastor, which I appreciated. I got tired of people urging the priesthood on me, because I did not especially want to become a priest. I always wondered why the pastor, an elderly Monsignor, never asked me about priesthood as everyone else did, though he was always very kind to the altar servers. One day, as I was coming close to graduation from the parish school, I was assigned to serve the seven o’clock morning Mass and the elderly pastor was the celebrant. Only the two of us were in the sacristy and he vested in silence, mumbling the vesting prayers in Latin and preparing himself for Holy Mass. With just two minutes to go before the Mass began, the Monsignor suddenly turned and said, “John, what will you be doing when you grow up?” I thought to myself, “Oh boy, here it comes. Even from Monsignor.” But I replied, “Monsignor, I am still not certain but I am thinking about going into medicine. I would like to become a doctor.” And the pastor replied, “Good. Good. And what will you do after that?” I said, “Well, I suppose I will marry and have a family of my own.” The priest said, “Good, and what after that?” Not sure exactly where he was going with this line of questioning, I replied, “I guess I will grow old, practicing medicine, and eventually retire. And then I guess I will die and go to heaven.” The pastor nodded his head knowingly, thoughtfully, and he was quiet for a few seconds. Then he looked at me earnestly and said, “And who will you bring with you into heaven?” Immediately, he rang the sacristy bell and we walked out to begin the Mass. I thought to myself, “How clever you are, Monsignor. How clever you are.” I thought about that comment all during the Mass and many more times during my adolescent and young adult years. “And who will you bring with you into heaven?” It was asking myself that question repeatedly that really turned the tide and convinced me eventually that I should become a priest. Every vocation is about helping other people reach heaven. I tell this story not to minimize the greatness of the sacrament of marriage, because marriage serves the same purpose! I suppose the young man might have used the same comment made by the pastor to move him towards the vocation of marriage. But the story illustrates the critical point that a vocation is not primarily about self-fulfillment, but about being the instrument of God in saving others. “What will you do with your life? What are your plans? Have you ever thought of committing your existence totally to Christ? Do you think that there can be anything greater than to bring Jesus to people and people to Jesus?”17 Pope John Paul II
Wow! A wonderful description of God’s will regarding the fundamental relationship between men and women, and His intention for the marital bond to be a permanent one. Also of God’s will regarding same sex unions. All of us, but especially our pre-teens and teenagers need to learn this biblical teaching thoroughly, along with all of the biblical teachings about sexuality. Sinclair Lewis’s Mere Christianity is a wonderful book in this genre, appropriate for teens and adults alike. Thanks so much for this outstanding homily Bishop Barron. I hope it gets wide viewership. Byrne
The church should also be about community; it needs to help young people to meet... and young families to meet... and old people to not be alone. The Catholic Church needs to do MORE to make this happen if it wants to exist into the next century. The mass, tho it has it's rightful place and purpose, is not enough to bring people together. It is the Word but not the actions.
It is true. We are all in a sense trapped in "possessive individualism." Thank goodness for teachers like Bishop Barron. (By the way, Chinese society, in general, seems to come much closer to the Biblical ideals of community-first, family-first. I say this, knowing full well what is going on there now.)
Thank you Bishop Barron. You are always insightful in your teachings. Many of my doubts are dispelled whenever I watch or listen to you. God should grant you more graces.
Woman came from man's rib Not from his feet to be walked on Not from the top of his head to be superior to him But from his side to be equal Next to the heart to be loved and under the arm to be protected

Discernment is not a choice between good and evil, but often a choice between the good and the best. What is best for you is your proper vocation.
From the book
"To Save a Thousand Souls" by fr Brett Brannen
Who Will You Bring With You Into Heaven?
God bless you Bishop Barron
Amen Father!
This is beautiful! Please keep up the good work bishop! God bless you and the Word on Fire team!
And God Bless you Bishop Barron!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. It has opened my eyes to be more accepting of others.
It is true. We are all in a sense trapped in "possessive individualism." Thank goodness for teachers like Bishop Barron. (By the way, Chinese society, in general, seems to come much closer to the Biblical ideals of community-first, family-first. I say this, knowing full well what is going on there now.)
Oh thank you so much Bishop Barron. This is most beautiful and needed. God bless you.
An excellent reminder of what marriage is about... Thank you!
One of the best sermons I have heard or read. Thank you.
Thank you Bishop Barron. You are always insightful in your teachings. Many of my doubts are dispelled whenever I watch or listen to you. God should grant you more graces.
Thanks much.
Woman came from man's rib
Not from his feet to be walked on
Not from the top of his head to be superior to him
But from his side to be equal
Next to the heart to be loved and under the arm to be protected
Well said! I’m publishing a weekly RUclips video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you.
