- Lenny Belardo is no ordinary Pope. He is the youngest and first American Pope in history. We find him on the morning of his first day in office, preparing to enter into the power struggles inside the closed, secretive Vatican state.
The Young Pope stars Jude Law and Diane Keaton and plays out against the stunning backdrop of papal Rome. The modern-day drama was created by Oscar winning director Paolo Sorrentino.
A Sky Original Production premiering 27th October exclusively on Sky Atlantic.

Jude Law is extremely underrated as an actor. He's a phenomenal performer.

I HONESTLY thought the same thing.
The best series out right now.

I finished watching this series a few days ago and I have to agree. I'm not the least bit religious but I think this show does a great job at straddling the line of respect for faith as well as parodying the sheer absurdity of religion and especially the Catholic Church. This series is cool and actually quite emotional in many places. I liked it alot though the ending was pretty lackluster imo.

“A few people who posted here are practicing Catholics, as am I. I was fully prepared to ignore this series because I thought that we’d be made fun of or mocked. I did not feel this way at all. Complex characters living complex lives in a complex institution was what I saw-and so breathtakingly finely acted! Such a well-crafted series that did not demonize or vilify the Church, nor its clergy and adherents! Indeed, the characters were developed in such a way as to draw empathy from the viewing audience, even as said characters were engaging in questionable acts or doubting the existence of God. Who doesn’t from time to time? Biblically speaking, God often works through deeply flawed men and women like those portrayed in this series. That point is not lost here. When a program invites profound empathy and understanding toward people who may be vastly different from oneself, it’s always a big win in my books!”

I'm a Catholic, and a traditionalist catholic at that, but I must say the writing for this show is quite impressive in its knowledge of Church history and even theology, even if its approach in many respects is misguided

Just finished to watch the last one... no doubt.. this is a masterpiece...scenes, dialogues, songs and musics, the story... Sorrentino is a fucky italian genius, after the Oscar in 2015 he is going to win a huge amount of awards and golden globes... grazie Paolo... If some of the clueless fanatics actually delved more into the show they'd realise how conservative Lenny is. And this is not a 'Hollywood' corruption idea, it's a well made story about a man with his own personal issues in a position of power, struggling with his past and the future of his unsure faith. So watch it!

If you have doubts whether you should watch this or not, please do. It really is incredible. This is such a unique show, I've never seen anything quite like it and it really captures you from the first episode and manages to hold your interest till the last episode. And obviously one of the best things about this show is Jude Law. His performances in every episode are brilliant, in a way that really holds your attention but doesn't strand you from the plot and show itself. He was a prefect choice for the role, and in my opinion just his performance alone is a good enough reason to watch this series.
The soundtrack to this show is amazing...

This is a truly weird and brilliant series. Such a unique story and as the audience you can never quite predict what's gonna happen next despite your best efforts. This is a very original series and I love those curve balls it throws at you!

Really enjoyed the first two episodes, and can't wait until the next episode, music is really good, and well suited to the show in trailer, I've listened to it a few times already just for the music.
I watched all the episodes, it's is an awesome series, while watching the series, one feel connected with god if one believe in god or inclination towards god, the pope, is very handsome and all the other actors justified the roles... i don't mind watching it for second time

I don't see why they would.
If it depicts the Church as overly decadent, corrupt and powercrazed, then it becomes a warning of a distopian future, a warning, of the shape of things to come, and what must be avoided.
If it depicts the Church in a kindly way, championing social and political reform throughout the world, then it becomes a useful propoganda.
And if it depicts the church as it is? Then it becomes purely factual.

Its easy to offend catholics because they wouldn't really do anything. They will say their protest and criticism and go back to their normal lives. I'm catholic and i might even watch this series if its well-made. Offending catholics and other christians isn't really an act of provocation, its a sure-fire way to success and fame. Countless actors and filmmakers have built careers and won awards and accolades just for doing it with no risk at all. then they self-congratulatory proclaim themselves as brave, provocative and rebellious.
Now if HBO really wants to act like real provocateurs, why don't they try making a similar film about Islam. Cmon, do one tv series about Islam with the same type of intrigue, scandals and similar content. lets see if HBO has the balls. Its one thing to offend a tolerant and liberal religion like christianity, and then its another thing to say something bad about a religion that breeds on death fatwas, radical suicide bombers and "moderates" who would go after your head if you say something bad about their fate.

If I wasn't a devout Catholic this would be interesting. But unless this "pope" character ends up being good somehow in the end then I can't watch. Bad people who wanted to end catholicism have become pope, but even they changed their ways once they became pope.
actually a bunch of popes used to make people buy their way into heaven. There were some really crazy and bad popes in the middle ages.

Brian Catholicism is the original Christianity. If it's full of paganism than so is Anglicanism, Orthodox, Lutheranism, and every other offshoot of Catholicism. Btw the church takes a stand against homosexuality. I think your confusing us with the Episcopalians. The pope in no way thinks he is God. That's what this preview gets wrong. The pope simply heads the Church, guided by God. The Bible is the source of tradition and in no way is overridden by tradition. In fact, the whole mass revolves around scripture. As the people above have noted, you just make yourself sound ignorant.
Most people in the comment section don't really understand a thing about the series. Go watch it and you will realize that it's far from your expectation resulted from merely watching trailers. This one is simply aesthetic, fit for everyone with an open mind and has nothing relevant to what ppl said in the comments.
