Unfortunately, not many months into having it, I decided to check the Button Testing, and the ZL/ZR buttons have double and even triple input in a single tap of either button, and this is detrimental if I'm playing game that requires me holding those buttons for whatever reason (like aiming and shooting in Splatoon 2). Even though it says it works on PC, it is not recognized as a Pro Controller by Steam on PC, and generally had issues setting it up. The PowerA GC controller: Bought in 2018, used it on both Switch and PC. Been using it for almost 3 years now, and still holding up well, and I don't mind changing its AA batteries when it needs to. I stopped using it on Switch however, and use it on only PC, since Steam recognizes it as a Pro Controller, so setting it up there was no hassle. And the reason why I stopped using it on Switch was because I really wanted to map custom buttons on it, but the switch wouldn't let me, unlike the Exlene controller. Final verdict. The PowerA has durability and functionality, even though it ended up not being suitable for my Switch for my own personal reasons. @@Hadeks_Marow Thanks for the insight. I think the indigo version of the controller in the video is actually full bluetooth, without a dongle. Don't know if it can wake the switch up though.
You missed the craziest part about this controller. The triggers ARE analog. Plug it in on PC and it registers as an x-input device. The triggers will register analog input based o how hard you press them in even though there is no travel. It's nuts. Not what I would prefer, but still a pretty decent option for Gamecube emulation if you gotta go wireless.
Man this is such bullshit I bought the controller based on this comment and now I find out you were either lying or (more likely) the company removed the feature. Definitely returning this shit
So I just purchased this and played it September 16th and the new wireless version does not have a dongle. It does not have an audio jack either. But it does feel much higher quality than the Power A GameCube controller that I bought and returned after a couple months when it broke.

I have 4 usb gamecube controllers. 2 PowerA, 2 Hori. But between the plug to charge, no battery. You had my interest. Having TRUE DIGITAL triggers though sold me on in. I'm getting it in the coming months. This thing isn't going anywhere, right?
they go with the right angle because when you remove the charger from the controller you arent stressing the head where it connects to the wire at a right angle you dont pull in the same direction as that wire where it connects to the head thus extending the life of the charging chord
Honestly the only reason I can think of for them using a right angle cable instead is if they make something that works better with a right angle cable, meaning that they went with them because they already have them. Sometimes right angle cables works better, say on like a drawing tablet, but on a controller at the top no it doesn't, if they put the port on the side and gave it a cable run, yeah I can see it working better
Internal battery _and_ rumble?! *Yes please.* Those are the two things that have prevented me from buying those Power A controllers. After using the Dualshock 4 and Pro Controller there's no way I can go back to using a controller that takes double A batteries. And while lack of rumble isn't a super huge deal, it's also kind of lame not to have it.
don't know if you still check back on older video's comments, but I've had it for a while and I like it. After a very short time the L trigger stopped working though, so I rarely use it. before I open it up and try to fix it, I wanted to ask: did you encounter this before? what may be the issue and how could I fix it?
So just a question. Do the buttons feel clicky like the power a face buttons. The power a controller buttons seem to be very noisy when compared to a normal gc controller. How does this compare?
Omg... I love the shameless mother 3 plug! This meme will live on until we get this game!!! I love it every time it randomly shows up in your videos. :)
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive so idk, but in terms of which I prefer, it'll probably be the exelene all just because it doesn't use batteries, it uses USB-C cable which is just an instant turn on.
my thing is I like battery packs better than dealing with rechargeable batteries especially since almost everything I have is run off battery packs, laptop, Bluetooth speaker, phone, and xbone controller, I really don't use anything that runs off regular batteries anymore
Yup, i feel like the Power A controllers are high in performance, but low in durability. The button tends to jammed, the spring that holds the battery in place sometimes fall out and the control stick tend to drift. I regret not buying a warranty for my power A controllers...sigh. I'm going to try this controller out, i'm tired of buying batteries as well
See what I want is for 8-bitdo to make their do-it-yourself thing where you take a shell and the buttons from the old controller put the wireless board inside of it and make it work with stuff like the switch
Got this about December. Around when smash came out and let me tell you; I got the wired one, and I can't put the thing down. Its just a good controller.
Wait, so is this thing actually bluetooth, or do you always need the dongle for all devices? If it is, why can't it just connect directly to the switch?
It's a protocol thing. Theoretically it could if you re-programmed the controllers bluetooth to give out the same frequency as a Pro-Controller. The people who made this controller just don't know that frequency so they just used their own, which is why we are stuck with a dongle to begin with.
There is a Bluetooth version with no dongle (indigo) and a 2.4g wireless version that uses a dongle (black) Look on Amazon. Just type in Exlene GameCube Controller
Thanks for sharing! Just ordered the blue variant through the affiliate link. I've been looking for a good Gamecube-like controller with shoulder buttons that don't pretend to be analog. The wider C-stick looks great, and hearing that the analog stick is surprisingly close to the original is certainly a plus! I can deal with the drawbacks. Can't wait to try it out on various titles.
@@billable1861 I've heard others say that too, but I've had a pro controller since my PowerA that went out before my PowerA did. I don't play smash, but I use it all the time on Warframe and my PowerA has outlasted 2 joycon sets as well as my pro controller. Mine were ordered from overseas and shipped instead of being bought locally, not sure if there's a difference.
I picked one of these up. And I quite agree with what was said. I actually found it cheaper on aliexpress so I bought it there. Mine can with two usb a (female) to usb c (male) adapters one of which was busted, and I assume was for the switch in portable mode. It definitely works best on switch but also works rather well on ps3 (despite the controller lacking analog triggers/shoulders). It is compatible with stream on pc and is good on pc. It also apparently has android support too but I have no idea if it works...
I am looking forward to a gamecube controller that supports gyro and both wireless and wired connection, you know like a pro controller, or a joycon, or any reasonable Switch controller.
For the switch in handheld mode you need an alternative charger. I've got 1 that loops around back, and it's all metal tips with a bearded cabel. It's over a year old, practically new easily worth $11
I had one of those controllers a couple months ago, the left stick ended up getting worn out to the point where it was loose and uneven. The left stick also had a squeaking sound when it was tilted down. Had to replace it with a normal gamecube controller 2 days ago
Sure, this thing'll be great for Switch and all, but really, honestly, I wanna get this for the PS3 support. Like really, playing through Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix or Guided Fate Paradox with a GameCube controller? Yes pls
So.... found a nul brand source for these! Picked one up for $25AUD !!! Seems identical except that it has red LEDs and a button to turn rumble on or off.
@Spawn Wave you should just buy a set of the Xbox elite controller DPad set & swap it out with the 3rd party controller's DPad if you even can do the and it'll feel a lot better than the one that is already on it
Okay guys, so APPARENTLY, this controller comes in 2 colors, and the blue version uses Bluetooth *without* a dongle. And it is pretty much the same price. No idea if it can wake up the Switch or not though.

Funny enough, I got the power A today and I’m kicking myself. but I’m quite happy with the power A the quality is good and would recommend it.
It looks like they have a Bluetooth version for $3 more on Amazon that doesn't need a dongle. They do mention that the left stick is "softer" on that one than the dongle version though which is odd.
@@RetroHabboRetro Yeah I just wasn't sure if a softer stick was a good or a bad thing. It's definitely tempting, although I wish it was available in black. I'd definitely prefer the bluetooth version.

Bro, get some Eneloop AAs and a decent charger, make some labeled sets, and have extra sets charged up and ready to use whenever you need them. Been doing this for like a decade now. All my AAs and AAAs still work great. I just wish I had a cell phone and laptop that ran on AAs or AAAs. Seems the built-in li-ion packs are only good for a couple years of moderate use. Planned obsolescence at its finest.
I bought it 3 months ago, when literally no one has bought it and when it was new. I was surprised by its quality! Edit: I have the wired one (bought it for around 22 dollars at the exlene shop) which also has a headphone jack! and, fun fact, the triggers are actually analog. if you press the triggers to the point where they click, you go like 1/3 of the way. If you press it further, it goes further although it feels like you're trying to press a fully pressed button for no reason. Edit 2: The buttons are just pressure sensitive, I'm so bad at words lol

Rumble, motion controls, and rechargeable battery. Pretty much everything the Power A is missing. Too bad it needs the receiver plugged into the dock though, that means no playing mobile
I didn't buy the PowerA controller due to the triggers not being analog but having the analog feel. Something about those kinds of controllers fatigue my hands during gameplay. Must be the travel they require to press the button and the resistance they have with the spring if I have to hold down the trigger. Alot of cheap OG Xbox controllers do this with their triggers. I might pick up this controller.
I have the PowerA one and it is GREAT and it looks and feels almost exactly like a Gamecube controller while functioning almost exactly like a Switch Pro controller. I've never heard of the other one but it sounds like it's not as good as the PowerA one. I'll probably get it just for my PS3 ;).
except for the dongle and d-pad and internals (all of those things are either negligible or not applicable anymore) why isn't it as good as the poweA one?
I can't say this is universal, but from my experience with my daughter's way of ripping any cable (charger, headphone, etc) out if its socket; it seems to me that the right angle versions are much stronger.

I am HONESTLY strongly considering getting one of these as well in the coming months.
@@Hadeks_Marow Thanks for the insight. I think the indigo version of the controller in the video is actually full bluetooth, without a dongle. Don't know if it can wake the switch up though.
Z Katt it can! I have the silver and gold controllers you just have to hold the home button down for a few seconds
They must've changed this. Their current listing says that it's not analog. Kind of wish that I kept the one I bought years ago.
There appear to be two versions with the blue one being Bluetooth and costing $39.99 while the black one has a usb receiver and costs $36.99.
I saw the same thing, but Spawn didn't seem to realize it in his video. I wonder if the bluetooth works well. Which one is better?
Yes, the blue color is bluetooth verison with improved feature like larger-d pad, black color is usb dongle version. But the black usb dongle version will be changed to bluetooth version soon, with more improved feature and function. thanks for focusing on Exlene controller.

Looks just like Soulja-cube wireless bluetooth controller. Hmmmm 🤔
Exlene has a purple one that has the bigger Dpad and no dongle. Just straight bluetooth.
Battery or rechargeable by USB-C cable? Also, hows the travel on the triggers?
Surprised no one has commented in recent days. The turbo could be really good for diy in new horizons.
I always check in with your content on RUclips, really good stuff! I hope to see more in way of reviews both games and tech ☺️
Exlene actually made a wired GameCube controller thats actually does contain Motion controls. Hope u can take a look at it.
So just a question. Do the buttons feel clicky like the power a face buttons. The power a controller buttons seem to be very noisy when compared to a normal gc controller. How does this compare?
I'm pretty sure the right angle charger is harder to bend or break. It's just a stylistic choice
Omg... I love the shameless mother 3 plug! This meme will live on until we get this game!!! I love it every time it randomly shows up in your videos. :)
I just bought it too, it's pretty excellent in all the areas it needs to be and improves on the features of the alternatives too
So after all this time... Here is the real question!! Which control is better for SSBU? The powerA or the Exlene?
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive so idk, but in terms of which I prefer, it'll probably be the exelene all just because it doesn't use batteries, it uses USB-C cable which is just an instant turn on.
I have the Exlene controller and holding the Home button for a few seconds does wake the Switch
I don't wanna call you a liar. But man. How?
Do you have the one with the USB nub? Mine won't wake my console no matter what I try.
my thing is I like battery packs better than dealing with rechargeable batteries especially since almost everything I have is run off battery packs, laptop, Bluetooth speaker, phone, and xbone controller, I really don't use anything that runs off regular batteries anymore
Did anybody have a problem with the stick on the powerA controller after a couple months
Yup, i feel like the Power A controllers are high in performance, but low in durability. The button tends to jammed, the spring that holds the battery in place sometimes fall out and the control stick tend to drift. I regret not buying a warranty for my power A controllers...sigh. I'm going to try this controller out, i'm tired of buying batteries as well
The c stick and the A button go out and stick after a couple months it’s awful
Same here. I had 3 powerAs and they all had the same stick issues.
How is it 2 years later?
I have this controller and it’s surprisingly very high quality which I don’t think was brought up enough in the video.
Power A controller, i have one, love it! would rather have a set of those than pro controller clones
does it drift?
Wait, so is this thing actually bluetooth, or do you always need the dongle for all devices? If it is, why can't it just connect directly to the switch?
I dont think its bluetooth...I have a keyboard and mouse that uses a similar dongle with no bluetooth functionality.
It's a protocol thing. Theoretically it could if you re-programmed the controllers bluetooth to give out the same frequency as a Pro-Controller. The people who made this controller just don't know that frequency so they just used their own, which is why we are stuck with a dongle to begin with.
There is a Bluetooth version with no dongle (indigo) and a 2.4g wireless version that uses a dongle (black)
Look on Amazon.
Just type in Exlene GameCube Controller
@@RhythmGrizz Yeah I actually just saw this. Wonder which one is objectively better?
Mario party superstars + gc switch controller = Nostalgia over 9000
Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to try it out on various titles.
love the new outro man
the PowerA not having rumble for $50 was weak and I want to try this one.
Agreed rumble is a big thing for me
I really like both my wired and wireless PowerA GC controllers for my Switch, but I'll keep my eyes open for this one. Great video!
I hate my power a one. I’ve had it replaced 3 times. The buttons stick and leads to mis inputs. Felt nice in the hand but clearly cheap after a month.
Thanks for the review and the awesome Mega Man X5 background music.
Quick sidenote: I have not heard of anyone else getting a usb a to usb c adapter before so if you do buy it don’t expect one...
What sort of analog stickboxes does it use? Plastic like the first party GameCube controller or metal like the Power A one?
Sure, this thing'll be great for Switch and all, but really, honestly, I wanna get this for the PS3 support.
Like really, playing through Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix or Guided Fate Paradox with a GameCube controller? Yes pls
So.... found a nul brand source for these! Picked one up for $25AUD !!!
Seems identical except that it has red LEDs and a button to turn rumble on or off.
@Spawn Wave you should just buy a set of the Xbox elite controller DPad set & swap it out with the 3rd party controller's DPad if you even can do the and it'll feel a lot better than the one that is already on it
I'm not crazy on the Power A's C-Stick on that GC controller. ill have to peep this one out
Okay guys, so APPARENTLY, this controller comes in 2 colors, and the blue version uses Bluetooth *without* a dongle. And it is pretty much the same price. No idea if it can wake up the Switch or not though.
Triggers still have the slotted tab for the analog function from the original controllers lol
why not swap the d bad stick from the power a controller?
Most people won't buy both lol
today i was actually trying to look for a good gamecube controller and i think i landed on one so thank you so much for the help ✌
There is this one and the Hori one, this one might be better though. PowerA is the worst of the 3 if I am being honest.
@@Hadeks_Marow thanks man
@@andrewglefke1271 If I am being honest, this one could be better than Hori's. Hori GCC has a weird thing where you have to hold the triggers or bumpers when you plug it in so the bumpers/triggers aren't flipped.
right angles are better on the cord. it keeps it from snapping on the inside at the base. but I don't understand why this cord needs it? type C is so thick already that it is near impossible to break one
I’ll be getting this Game Cube Controller..
I’ve been waiting for one that doesn’t have Pseudo-analog triggers and one that has rumble plus motion controls (because it’s better than sticks)
Plus, along side the Switch pro controller and the Xbox one controller, the GameCube controller is easily one of the most comfortable controller out there..
And seems like this third party controller is the closest it’s going to be for awhile, so I’ll jump in
I was just wondering if the controller held up, any notable pros/cons? do you recommend it? Why or why not?
Crazy. today I bought a 2 pack of cheap GC controllers for my PC. They are wired but I wanted that GC feel while playing Twilight Princess on the Dolphin. Will be buying this one soon too lol!
If it's cheap enough screw modularity, just replace all the internals and upgrade the battery. If it dies
Right angle cables can be harder to break
Exlene is using straight type-C cable now.
Hey Spawn I think they threw in a braided right angle cable to charge the switch undocked not the controller. they presume you have one from the pro controller or somewhere else. Funny enough, I got the power A today and I’m kicking myself. but I’m quite happy with the power A the quality is good and would recommend it.
Oh man if it had analog triggers it would be perfect
I wonder if it's worth buying? Does it needs the dongle to the Nintendo Switch? Is it rechargable? Spawn wave rocks!
It looks like they have a Bluetooth version for $3 more on Amazon that doesn't need a dongle. They do mention that the left stick is "softer" on that one than the dongle version though which is odd.
@@TheAlmightyZing I don't see any version of this Controller except this one and the wired edition
It's on the same page as the one he links. You'll see a $36.99 black version and a $39.99 blue version. The blue one is the Bluetooth one.
@@RetroHabboRetro Yeah I just wasn't sure if a softer stick was a good or a bad thing. It's definitely tempting, although I wish it was available in black. I'd definitely prefer the bluetooth version.
@@TheAlmightyZing is the Bluetooth version pretty good and does it wake up the Switch? I am thinking of buying this Controller or 8bitdo SN30 Pro Controller?
FYI
I got the cabled version with audio a couple months ago, the cable is actually starting to break now.
great breakdown my dude
I just ordered one from AliExpress for 29.99$ free tracked shipping. 😁
Paul-Ove Eidem does the turbo button work well?
shipping takes so long on it I checked
Do you have to use the Dongle? If its bluetooth cant it connect directly to the switch?
*Great work by the way, ive been watching your stuff lately, trying to get a Gamecube controller solution for a minimalistic build. IDK if ill have a monitor for the set up, but does it connect in table top mode?
They updated their design and now there are two wireless variants.
This black one is connected with the dongle and the other is the blue/purple gamecube colour which is bluetooth. You do have to connect it to the switch via the cable for the first time and then is connected via bluetooth afterwards.
Am considering buying one at the moment.
@@joshuaowen6185 i bought a black one... no dongle in the package nor is it required 🤷♂️
I don't think it brings enough to the table for me to consider getting it honestly actually have been in search of actual gamecube controllers didn't buy any for smash ultimate when they were first released and I can't find any now which absolutely sucks because I don't want to buy used ones but it looks like that's the route I'm going
Does that charge cable charge the switch? Does it allow u to charge it while you are using the kickstand?
Bro, get some Eneloop AAs and a decent charger, make some labeled sets, and have extra sets charged up and ready to use whenever you need them. Been doing this for like a decade now. All my AAs and AAAs still work great. I just wish I had a cell phone and laptop that ran on AAs or AAAs. Seems the built-in li-ion packs are only good for a couple years of moderate use. Planned obsolescence at its finest.
So does this have rumble?
I bought it 3 months ago, when literally no one has bought it and when it was new. I was surprised by its quality!
Edit: I have the wired one (bought it for around 22 dollars at the exlene shop) which also has a headphone jack!
and, fun fact, the triggers are actually analog. if you press the triggers to the point where they click, you go like 1/3 of the way. If you press it further, it goes further although it feels like you're trying to press a fully pressed button for no reason.
Edit 2: The buttons are just pressure sensitive, I'm so bad at words lol
How good is the left stick? :3
Looks like PowerA needs to step up their game and make a version 2 of their controller which is rechargeable and has rumble.
Bardock32nd if they did that it’s an instant cop for me. I’d pay extra money for those features.
@@prisonmike3605 Same I already love the PowerA Gamecube controller I have the rechargeable batteries would be definitely a nice extra and especially rumble
Bardock32nd let’s hope they consider it.
I opened it a month ago because the right trigger button rubber washer had worn out otherwise it's a great controller to take with you on the go.
What is the best (lowest latency) controller for the switch. All I have is the joy cons and can't bring myself to buy the pro because of the price, unless it really is that much better
Is this better than the powerA controller?
Just was checking this out on Amazon and the PowerA is the same price now so methinks they want keep it competitive price wise.
I wonder if they built in the right angle to use the type c cable while using it in stand mode and charging on the go?
Who ever ordered the cables to include with the controller done goofed
the cable is includded in the box.
Nice Video, quick Questions:
- Does it power on the switch when in sleep mode?
- Does this work when the switch is undocked?
That's good news about those triggers. I have the PowerA controllers and I had to mod the triggers myself.
What mod did you do?
@@TheMattMercy there's a gap between the trigger and the actual button press. I was able to fill the gap with a little hot glue but you could use anything really. There's a video on my channel that shows what you're looking for.
Imo the best gamecube controller for switch is a literal gamecube controller. What can I say I'm a man of the classics
I was kinda exited to see a new wireless GameCube controller... and then I realized it was for the switch. Good video anyways :D
wellllll it's also for the PC and PS3
