- In today's video, I explain why I personally chose to buy a BMW 330i with the B48 over a BMW 340i with the B58.
There are a few reasons, some only apply to me in my specific situation. Hopefully this makes it clear why i chose to do what I did!

Hey everyone, today's video is a little more laid back, I just wanted to explain why I personally got a 330i over a 340ii. Hopefully you understand! Please don't forget to give this video a like and drop a comment, it'll really help me out and help the channel grow!
I love the F30 330i. I have one and it’s been a very fun and reliable car. People seen to always have a stigma against BMW’s for being unreliable, but they’ve definitely turned it around with the B46/48 and B58 engines. Either way you go they are solid picks.
I agree! And they’re also pretty easy to maintain and work on!
I researched the Mini Countryman JCW with the B48 engine. I ultimately decided against it because of all the plastic leaky bits like the oil filter housing. A BMW mechanic told me a list of fixes I would have to accomplish at 60k and it scared me off
how is your f30 330i doing today? Do you still have it? I am looking to buy one as my next car but I am hearing so much negative stuff about the f30 chassis.
Great pick, from what I’ve heard the 4-cyl is very under appreciated due to the intrigue of 6-cyl power. But it’s more than enough power, and definitely gets BMW to more people
I am not a BMW expert, but always watched the platform evolution.
please clarify if B48 is chopped version of B58? Other than -2 cylinders, what are the major differences? B58 has been reasonably reliable if B48 is comparably built it makes a lot of sense in a commuter car.
lmao i remember pre covid u could get a lightly used 340/440 for sub 30k. now thats what 330i/430s go for. hopefully this crazy car market goes down soon.
Really? I've never seen them that low. Bu t yeah, I'm with you... This car market is just insane
Got my Estoril blue w/track handling 340i 45k miles for 26.5k This was 4 months before the pandemic started.
@@aldorodriguez1674 that’s awesome honestly. I mean it just shows how insane this market is… but great for you. If you don’t mind me asking, what area are you from? I know some areas are just more expensive like Cali and NY
@@ayyyman_ Im from Napa, Ca but got the car in Walnut creek, Ca
I have a 2021 M235 a great car and engine.
Picked up a used 340i with 30k miles on the clock for £24k in the UK a couple of weeks ago, surprised to hear 330i’s are so much cheaper over there. I got a good deal on my 340 by going private but 330’s through a dealer are going for £25k. Typically 340 through a dealer are £3-£5k more, no where near double, so a no brainier for me to go for the 340i. COVID has made this market do crazy things I suppose!
I got my 430 with 70k km for 24k half a year ago now the cheapest one is like 32k. 440s are like 43k here
how is the 340 in terms of reliability? any issues?
@@prodbyjayyy no issues at all mate
@@Billythekid0716 fuel economy decent on there too?
@@prodbyjayyy as you’d expect. Not the best but not terrible if driving in comfort. If you’re after fuel economy then go for the diesel
Tldr: b48 is a cheaper option with parts prices and mpg including cheaper car.
Cool! I have a Cooper S with the B48, and its a great engine - loads of torque and power!
Thanks for the video. The right car for anyone is one that balances price, looks, performance etc. I had a 335i and decided to get something newer. The dealer had an M340i (6 cyl engine like the 335i) with low mileage but it was just a little more than I wanted to spend. I was also looking at the 228i xdrive, as there were plenty of these to choose from. Then I stumbled upon a 2 year old M235i - 4 cyl and xdrive but with M-bits (M suspension etc.) and a factory tune putting out 300hp and 330ft lbs of torque. I was surprised to find that the 0-60 times of the M235i were comparable to the M340i, probably because the M340i is a bigger, heavier car. The price was right so I bought the M235i.
Good choice
Sorry but huge mistake.
Why?
@@Unplugged704 only that he chose the 48 over 58. if he had the money it's obvious 58 is better.
@@Mike604 "obvious" how? He already has an N55. Why would he buy another v6 when he could, and did, get a better engine with respect to fuel efficiency and cost? More horsepower doesn't make the B58 the "better" choice for every situation.
And why bother commenting on a video you clearly didn't watch just to tell the creator they made the wrong decision buying a car that THEY (not you) will drive every day?

I got a new 3 series with the b48 I love it
B48 is powerful enough for Europe. Also insurance is a lot cheaper. Not to mention fuel consumption which is pretty low.
I agree. Overall is is more practical
Living in Germany, insurance pricing quite surprised me recently. I owned a BMW 335i e92 (Coupe) and replaced it with a 520i. Insurance for the 520 is about € 100 more per year. At the bottom line taxes are lower as well as fuel costs at the end it saves some money.
I also traded in my Civic for a 2016 Cooper S (B48). Dropped about $900 for K&N intake/Catback/Dinantronics X (got all for less than msrp) and it's a 260bhp/300tq car that weighs 2800lb.
So if you get Stage 1 tune.. add another 60+?
@@Unplugged704 it goes from around 215bhp (factory is underrated at 190bhp) to 260ish without any other mods just the tuner box. It's actually about 280bhp/320tq now with the tunerbox and upgraded front mount intercooler.
I have both engines a 2018 430xi convertible which gets 28 avg mpg (summer car) and a 2019 740xi (winter to all season family car). They are both keepers, so far reliable and serviced only at BMW. I do use liqui moly Jectron DI every other fill up. You’re better off with either a 30 or 40 engine over the “S” or “M” engines - they are built to last and cost less to run over time.
These should be called a 320 since it has a 2 liter. Bmw got weird with the naming when turbos were introduced.
I agree
Yeah but who would sell their 328i for a car called a 320i. Most BMW consumers wouldnt. Since they may not know much about the engine just BMW as a brand
@@marsallen4298 from a marketing stand point, I totally agree with you. But from a logical technical stand point, I agree with the top comment. BMW is a massive company, I’m sure they do what they do for a reason (probably the reason you said)
@@marsallen4298 Then they should call it the 342i (3 series 4 cylinder 2 turbos) or even 399i since the uninformed consumers love big numbers so much 🤣
@japanwatchconnection yea the 2018 318i was 1.5 liter turbo 3 cylinder 🤣
Lmaoooo what a bad choice

People complaining can’t even afford a 118d
I literally just got a 22 corolla instead of a 22 civic lol
This..
I don’t have that type of money. Also has 3 bmws lmfao nah jk love the vid I got a 2017 330i that I’m selling looking for a 750i always loved the 7 series
Why I bought a BMW 330i over a 340i? Because money lol
Lol if money wasn’t an issue, I’d daily a Urus

jezus dude get to it already. who do you think clicked on this video to see your other cars? ffs
I am thinking to buying a 330i xdrive 2017 and its has gone 110k km. is it reliable? I'm living in Sweden
These cars are pretty liable. 110k km is only about 65k miles so not too bad!
Go for it. The b48 is extremely reliable. Personally, I just pulled the trigger on a 2018 230i M-Sport with 34k miles so I think you're fine.
0:27 why so many cars videos must include these bad ass hip-hop-bass tunes 🤔
This ain’t it.
Thank you
IDK why everyone is 💩ing on you in the comments. I get what you're saying about buying a B48 over a B58. And that's why Im here.
Im looking for a new DD for myself since I'm giving my daughter the current DD ('11 MDX) to use when she gets her license in November. Im normally an Acura guy, and they're great if you want to drive for a decade w/o any worries, but Im looking for something more fun and engaging. Im a bit older now and can splurge beyond the safe and cheap cookie cutter-mobile. Test drove a 440ix GC this summer and loved it...but it was beyond a hard budget that I sent for myself (35k). Recently spent a week w/an old 2010 328i as a loaner and that absolutely cemented it for me...my next DD will be a newer 4 series. So as a compromise, I think I want to go with the B48. Plenty of lower mileage 430i's out there under my budget. Buuuuut....lol....for the same price as a B48 430, I can get a lower mileage, 2 or 3 year older 435. So that's what currently Im debating.
In the end though, I think the smart move...like you've done here....is the 430. Like you, I've already got a 'fun' car (GT350) that's an absolute blast to drive. Yeah the 440, or even the 435 would be more 'fun' but the SMART move is getting a lower mileage B48. Good video and great decision. It's helping me along in my process.
Trust me the price of fuel is making a 2litre b48 sound good
In a way it kinda maskes sense to get the b48 and stage 2 it compared to having a stock b58, and you would still same money, but on cost and running costs. Not to mention the b48 handles a lot better
Really looking to get a 330i, preferably in sport trim. I just don't think I would use the i6 to its full potential, I think I'd get plenty of enjoyment out of a sport package 330i and not to mention more affordable 😅
got the m sport black edition, fckin sick mate, got the charge pipe on, better throttle, and garbble sound from exhust nice... next MST intake!
@@Reaper_f30what’d you pay? With what mileage?
Aside from power do they have the same reliability ?
I sold my f30 328 xdrive, had it for 3 years, I'm tired of it, constant vibration, trembling, these cars have a problem with transfer case, when you're going 60 80 kmh on comfort mode first disgusting thing is whole car vibrate and when you want to accelerate slowly, you feel like transmission gear going to brake making heavy shake for one two seconds and then changing gear, this common problem with transfer case. Also has horrible suspension The only thing I like in this car is that she is beautiful and that's it.
I'm sorry to hear that. I heard the 328is have more issues than the 330i so I guess we'll see! But yeah I agree, they're beautiful cars
When I first bought my 340 suspension was awful to me as well. Kw v1's fixed that for me. As for vibrations I don't really get much of that unless on a bumpy road but some good tires and that should be settled as well
I agree with u I have a 2015 320i
@japanwatchconnection b48 is the same lemon engine. Now i have n55, this is real BMW.
I had a n20 f30 and I had none of your issues. Mine was a 2015
Planing on getting an x7 and a 3 series, my mind is already set on getting the b58 x7 but am hesitant on getting it in the 3series too which might be my most driven of the two .
X7 with the V8 and 3 series with the B58
My brother got the X7 with the B58 and he loves it. It's an X7, I don't think you need to go fast in it personally so I would take reliability of the B58 over the V8. For the 3 series, it really depends on what you want out of the car. The B48 is reliable and great on gas. The B58 is also reliable and significantly faster but also significantly more expensive. If you don't care for the speed and people's annoying "you should've bought a B58" comments, then I say save the money and get the B48.
@@ayyyman_ alright thanks, x7 b58 and 3series b48 it is then .
@@alvaro1768 am africa based so gas prices get wild at times thats why the v8 isn't on my mind right now plus traffic is crazy during the week and thats where the b48 comes in as a daily while the x7 will mostly be a weekend car and long distances .

Thanks! Idk, I try my best not to repeat myself lol… But I guess that’s why I’m not a professional talk show host haha. I’m just a dude filming himself and putting it on RUclips for people to hopefully enjoy and relate
I love that bro you have all my favorite engines
Love the red guts mashallah
Thank you bro! I love it so much I had to do it on both the 4 series and 3 series 🙏
If you have the money there is no reason to buy a b48 over the b58 😅
For me, there was. I make RUclips videos and it’s good to have a variety of motors on my channel. I already owned a B58. Making content for the B46 benefited me a lot.
B48 isn't really much more efficient in mpg compared to B58, but I have heard that the B58s are just indestructible thanks to their Diesel like build design.
@japanwatchconnection I know they are 1 to 1 identical in almost all ranges. But the B48 is of course the smaller 4 cylinder brother which is still potent as a B48B20B with 256hp
Same modular engine, 2 less cylinders = more fuel efficient. There's no other way around this.
@@ZoneCrasher Yeah still I have seen comparisons and even drove a B48 530i myself for a day. The difference in mpg or l/100km is so low that if you have the financial capabilities to upprice to a B58 just do it. It sounds way better, has more torque and performance and is overall also a tank of an engine.
Sorry but u will regret sooner why u didn’t go for B58 engine
I won’t. I have a B58 engine already and I also have a new M car so this B48 is more than enough for a dialysis driver :)
I just recently bought a G42, and yes, a 230 MSport. And M240 was in my budget, but I wanted a light car. And spoiler alert, the B48 is quick enough for any street work. I don't track the 230. If you wring out your 240/340 on the road, you're flat out going too fast, i.e., unsafe...IMO. I loooove my 230 (I did cheat with 255s on all corners, and a Dinan Tuner) because it's handling dynamics are just excellent! I have no need for a 4-second (or better) 0-60 time....and certainly not to add understeer for that quickness. I got a slick-roof 230 with the M Sport and Handling packages, nothing more, not even the HK Stereo. After a year, no regrets and I am not tempted by that almost-3900lbs G87! Ugh.
trade in/sell the 3 and 4 series and get a 22 G80 xdrive

Relax, it ain’t that deep
B58 > B48, your video pic is wrong. It's just that you chose the 48 over 58
Generally, yes. In this case, no. The B48 was better for me. The thumbnail goes along with the title.
Well it's an opinion, he's clearly not presenting it as an objective factual truth.
B46/48 > B58, your comment is wrong. It's just that you chose the 58 over the 48. (And presented no points arguing your opinion)
All hype. Kies blew both of their B58's. So did Noclutchgarage, 1stockF30, and Thicwhips.
I had an s58 2023 M3…and honestly for 3 months I owned the M3 chose to take my f30 328i to commute and run errands and go to restaurants. So I sold the M3.
What’s your preference between the n55 and b58? Which one is nicer to drive for fun. I am pretty sure the 40i is better for daily stuff since it’s the facelift.
I am currently looking for a 330i, 335i or 340i.
I’m mostly commuting and making around 10k miles per year. I think the 330i will be just enough for me when I’m doing a spirited drive but the 335i is cheaper and has the I6 engine. I also really like the n55 sound.
I’d like to know your opinion.
If you can swing it I'd go for the b58, you can push way more power than a n55 for pretty much the same money in upgrades, I have a stage 2 435i and it's fast with 400awhp but I want more power, not happening with the n55. It does sound amazing though, I get compliments all the time saying my car sounds better than the M4.
Don't know how reliable the b58 is compared to the n55 but mine has been very reliable running stage 1 for over a year and now stage 2+trans tune for 4 months and no problems.
But if you aren't after power the n55 is still great, just know the drivetrain can't handle much more than 400 especially the diffs, I have xDelete and they told me they can't mess around with it as much as the E chassis because the F Chassis trans/diffs are weaker. Get xDrive it's worth it 1000% and it's easy to just code in rwd for some fun, in awd I get 0-60 in 3.7 sec.
@@X314G i'm only looking for rwd models. I have a 320d x drive f30 and I am already most of the time over the speed limit so more power is not going to happen unless I get bored with the car. That's why I'm thinking of getting the 330i over the 335 or 340. Also insurance and taxes are more than double for cars with displacement bigger than 2000 cm3. I am looking for a fun car that is comfortable and agile. I'll probably ask some dealerships if they have 335i or 340i but in my country there are a lot more diesel engines than petrol as I can barely find 1 or 2 335i or 340 i f30 on any marketplace. Right now the 330i is not worth it. It's like a 2k difference between a 330i and 340i. The 335i is at least 2-3k cheaper than the 330i
@@utiuandy99 @Razvan Andrei Utiu Wow that's crazy that insurance and taxes go up that much on engine displacement, luckily I don't have that problem but I still get ripped off on insurance since I'm 23, it usually gets cheaper at 25+ years old and even with my clean record I'm paying 260 a month for pretty minimal insurance, 25k accident coverage. My state is also stupid and upcharges like crazy, when I lived in North Dakota for 10 months my insurance was 140/m with 750k of coverage for accidents, medical bills etc.
Really 330i is more expensive? Thats weird if the 335 is harder to get, hopefully you can get your hands on one, super fun car!
@@X314G I have to import it form Germany like I did with this car too as prices here are insane ( over 5 k euros for a similar car both form bmw stealerships). The annual tax for a 330i will be about 40 $ while for the 335i / 340i around 400$ insurance will be about 300$ for the 330i and somewhere close to 500$ per year but here it s optional to get Casco which if you total the car or damage it ( like from hitting another car when it's your fault or idk a wild horse kicks your door) you get money to get it repaired or you can choose to let other shops ( or dealers) repair the damage ( or get a sum of money if it's totaled). I'd estimate it to be around 900 euros or more per year for any of these cars with a. It may not seem like a lot (~900 euros a year for a 340/335i) but the average salary is 705 Euros per month , that's ~8,5 k /year. 1 Euro is 1.04 dollars.
AKA You couldnt afford a b58
Considering I (at the time) also owned a 435i and a X3 M40i, safe to say I could’ve afforded it if I really wanted to :). But the B46 makes for a great daily commuter

So the 330i isn’t as fast ?? As a 340i because the 340i b58 been popping rn , since u just need down pipe , 😭😭 and you’ll be fast , I’m coming from a c7 stingray idk if. I should do the switch
Fuck noooo LSX 🫡
@@datboidandre1950 c7 don’t have the lsx bro LT1
Go h/c with fbo you will be at 600whp NA
Fast is a relative term, a downpipe b58 is a fast car for a everyday car but thats a opinion
@@4door_papi zl1 or m340i brotha ?
How much is your mpg and how much you pay for gas
The highest I’ve gotten with the B48 was 36mpg on a full commute. Usually it’s around 32mpg. I put 93 octane but you can do 91. How much I pay depends a lot on the current gas prices honestly
@@ayyyman_ Hey may I ask you what mpg do you get usually on the B58 engine in comparison to the B48?
You have a boring SUV with the B58 and you have the 3 series with the B48.
You're doing it the wrong way around bro.
it’s bc ur broke
😂 I have a G80 M3 now, a X5 and my 330i. But you right, I’m broke
@@ayyyman_it was a joke gang, i’ve been watching you’re f32 build for a minute much love
@@ayyyman_you’re the reason i want an f32
No B48 for me. I would get a S3 / Golf R over a N55. I almost did.😅
I love the B48 but also wanted a Golf R. I just found this for such a great deal. I also love the spec of it
@@ayyyman_ for sure. That’s a super nice spec 330. I like N55’s but I just wouldn’t want to deal with some of the maintenance stuff. The Golf was so easy to work on. I had a MK7 before my 340.😅
I agree with you. N55 sounds like a beautiful monster compared to the B58. B58 is awesome but the exhaust tone is flat which is odd.
Na bro s series over b series.
