  • Welcome back to the channel everyone! Thanks for joining me. Today marks the 1 year anniversary since I bought my 2017 bmw 440i. And it’s also about to hit 100k miles. So I wanted to do a reliability update. And in a future video I’ll do a full 1 year review.
    Thankfully, the car has held up amazingly well! It’s been a joy to own for the year that I’ve had it. I’ll break down the good and the bad during this video.
    Also, congrats to the winner of my 1k subscriber giveaway! ‪@AustinMufasa‬
    And thank you to anyone who participated. Better luck next time!

    Great video and I love the exterior mods you've done! I'm the original owner of a mineral white metallic (nice color btw:)) 2018 M240i X-drive which now has about 36,000 miles and it's encouraging to see your higher mileage B58 holding up so well. Last year once the warranty expired, I installed a CTS Turbo catted downpipe, MHD stage 2 tune, and an Xhp stage 2 transmission tune and I love the performance boost all of that has made! It is my daily driver and the only issue was the check engine light kept coming on intermittently. It turned out to be a slight leak where the turbo flange and downpipe connect and despite thinking I had installed everything correctly, (including a new gasket), I was wrong! It hasn't given me any issues since so you might want to double-check that first before taking your car to a shop where a "mechanic" misdiagnoses the issue as a faulty rear (after cat) 02 sensor. Had I agreed to the "repair", I would have wasted a few hundred bucks "fixing" the issue to no avail, but that's a whole different story for another day.

    Loving my 2017 F36 XDrive. Just turned 150,000km the other day. Outside of normal wear and tear items, the only issue I've had with the car is a dash light for a passenger airbag fault (which to be honest...I haven't been able to track down yet) and the original battery is finally calling uncle. I have never used the back seat for people, so I was happy to trade rear legroom for front leg room. If it weren't for the hatch, I would have gotten the coupe. A coupe with the hatch is the dream.

    I went from a F32 440 M sport to a G42 M240xi this past August. Not gonna lie I do sometimes miss the 440 due to the fact that it was gray and way easier to keep clean. The thundernight metallic on the M240 is nice but a pain to maintain. My 440 was a 2018 and had 43k miles on it when I sold it. Only mods I had was a a inlet and intake pipe, BM3 Stage 1 93 tune, carbon fiber spoiler, calipers painted black, and black M style kidney grills(like you have). Car was bullet proof and gave me zero issues, not even coolant loss.
    And it's funny cause initially I also went from a 11 E92 335xi (N55) to a F32 440xi.

    • @beaterbeemer
      @beaterbeemer  7 месяцев назад +1

      That’s awesome to hear. Sounds like we’ve had similar bmw journeys! How are you liking the M240 other than that? Better than the 440? I can’t deny it’s lighter but with the mods I have, the 440 is so fast. And has tons of room to get faster and I really don’t feel like “man, I wish I was in a lighter car”. But for some folks it’s 240 or bust 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For anyone looking at a B58, my 2¢. Similar boat here. My 2018 340i is at 95k now. About 55k of those miles are stage 2+ with flex fuel. Starting to think about letting her retire back to stock daily for a G82. The only issues I ever had were
    1. Coolant cap (B58 issue)
    2. Parking brake clip (F series BMW issue in general, not just B58)
    3. PCV replacement (B58 issue)
    Not saying this platform is bulletproof like a toyota corolla that you can beat on for 50k before changing the oil, there are still common issues, but they are so isolated, minor and easy to diagnose/fix compared to other platforms.
    It still ISN’T a headache free car for your average joe, but if you do just a little bit of research before buying this or any car, then it is 100% worth it. Of course it’s no corolla or mazda3, but it’s damn near as reliable with incomparablely more power and fun per gallon.

    I just turned 76,000 miles on my 2019 440i Gran Coupe. It's tuned with about 10k worth of all the right goodies to get it to 425hp. Zero issues. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the tires. I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, while simply amazing tires, they only last about 7 months. I'm on my third set and it's not cheap.
    FWIW, I've driven Toyotas since day one, when I was 16 back in 1993. I never loved any of my cars...they were just okay and a means of transportation. But b/c the Supra shares the B58, I felt comfortable pulling the trigger on the BMW. Nearly 5 years in and I still love driving my 440i. It's just a badass car that gets great mileage in eco mode on the freeway and can light up just about any car short of a Porsche or supercar. It's nice to have serious power on tap when needed. Just a joy to drive.

    I had a 2017 440i loved the car it was great had no issues except when I sold it and I had mines at 29k and I sold it at 41k I will say there are some issues starting to pop up with them nothing really major but I will say if left not fixed it can lead to major issues one I’ve seen a lot with these first gen and the pvc caps they tend to fail quite a bit and they start causing major like issues but not really they cause the car to have uneven idle and horrible noise from the engine bay like a broken turbo and horrible smoke from the exhaust but it’s a very easy fix it’s just needs a replacement pcv cap cause the factory ones fail over time due to heat or wear and it’s just a rubber piece that breaks which I’m still confused on why such a cap can cause such major like problems but can be fixed easily. So watch out on that and second the turbo on these first gen b58 turbos it’s like a 50/50 some can last forever some can start leaking early on and I’ve seen it personally on some of my buddy’s b58 that they start leaking at 40k miles and break super easily and it may be due to the tunes they’ve done or boost these gen 1 turbos don’t hold up well over time they can hold boost pretty well but over time I’ve seen them start leaking or blow but I don’t know if that’s for everyone so watch out on these cars I’m not saying they will break but I’m just saying it’s a 50/50. AND DONT DO PIGGY BACK TUNES they start causing some problems with cars more related to fuel some piggyback tunes are great but some can cause major issues over time from what I’ve heard. And one other thing the crankcase they tend to break a lot or start cracking and they can lead to very major problems but if you can catch it very early one you should be good and it’s just a hose that’s on the front and it’s like 100$ to change but mines was starting to go out and I had my check engine light on and just go out and sometimes go in limp but once I had it changed all of it went away but I’m not saying that those problems will happen to you it’s just how some of these first gen’s are some are good and some are bad but with this engine most of them are good and I would just say just keep on top of your maintenance and don’t push your cars too much and make sure that your within your limits on this engine. And yes the tread thing is very real I had a rwd version and mines threw a code when I only changed the rear you have to let the car know you change the tires so just reset the tpm sensors unless you replaced them with the same size or tires it won’t throw the chassis code but if you go a little bit bigger they will throw a code I don’t know why but they act super weird with the tires. But this is what I’ve seen personally with these cars big overall these engines are super great amazing probably the best BMW engine I’ve seen for cheap tuning and great maintenance and I was pushing around 450 hp and 500 torque and it’s a fun car if you guys want to see my old one I have a insta it’s blank.440i. This is what I’ve seen personally on some of these cars but I will say this is if not the best platform for beginners or first time BMW drivers to go for this is one if not the best platforms to start off on and if you haven’t driven one I would highly recommend taking a test drive in one these engines can make crazy torque and very easy horsepower with the right tuning. But just be careful with some of these cars but just best advice just be on top of your maintenance that’s all.

    • @beaterbeemer
      @beaterbeemer  8 месяцев назад

      Sure man, and welcome to the states! I’m going to try my best here, but let’s say you want to buy the oil change kit for your b58. So you buy it once and pay full price obviously. The next time you change your oil, you buy the kit again (technically you’ve bought it twice now) but this time you can put the old, used oil and filter back into the containers they came in. Just reuse the jugs and box from the 2nd kit you bought. Fcpeuro has a lifetime warranty return sheet that you have to print out, fill out, and include in your return package. They’ll give you a full rebate and now you’re golden! Use the rebate and never pay for oil changes again after the initial 2 purchases (technically purchase 2 is being refunded). Hope this helps! I’m bad at explaining things haha. You do have to pay for shipping which should be about $20

    You have to match outer diameter on Xdrive cars so your tires may be same diameter but in reality it could be slightly different (I think the tolerance is 1% at least on g series so I would check that). It seems easiest to just run square wheels.

    • @beaterbeemer
      @beaterbeemer  8 месяцев назад

      Hey thanks for reaching out. I don’t know much about the new generation but I know a 228i should be naturally aspirated, and therefore it’s instantly more reliable than a turbo charge bmw lol. Plus 40k miles in my opinion is still new as hell. If I were you I wouldn’t be worried.
      But of course there’s so many factors that go into this bro. Your current life situation, your income, your knowledge working on cars, your age and insurance costs etc etc. you gotta make the call on if you can really afford it or if it’s gonna run your margins too tight. Cuz nothing is guaranteed and you don’t wanna bet everything on the car never breaking ya know?
      But I say go for it and don’t look back. And save yourself tons of money by doing small jobs yourself and buy from fcpeuro for the lifetime warranty. Good luck!

    • @beaterbeemer
      @beaterbeemer  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, check your owners manual. Our cars accept tons of different viscosity from 0w30 up to 5w40. And for a tuned, higher mileage b58 application thicker is better. Don’t put that thin crap in your car

    • @russsle
      @russsle 8 месяцев назад

      I run 5w40 as well, going any 5/0w20 in florida just feels sketch, my oil will be as hot as anywhere all the time. thicker oils are better for not thinning out and giving you a yeeted bearing
