WAS BUYING THIS A MISTAKE? BMW 340i Critical First Impressions

- I've had my 340i for over a week now, just long enough to note a few things I like and some things I don't like. After driving an E90 for 6 years, there were a few things that jumped out at me about my new F30.
At the end of the day, I know this was the right choice. While the new car is slightly larger and has worse steering feel, it gets enough things right that I can look past its shortcomings.
The highlight of the 340i is the B58 motor paired with the 8 speed automatic transmission. The shifts are lightning fast and the motor is impressive, even in stock form.

I forgot to mention, the F30 has folding rear seats!!! 🤤🤤🤤🤣
I will buy my new car with automatic transmission too. All car i had was manuals transmission.
It was still an option in the f30 I believe
And you didn't have to pay for it Justin🤣
So glad you made this purchase whoever is saying it’s a bad purchase is crazy this is such a get upgrad dude. So dope you hit a 340 to and not a 335 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@stoss-11 i agree well explained
the e90 just has a special mechanical feel
It really does. It's a shame that BMW will never make another 3 Series like it
u wanna feel mechanical ill let u drive my e34😂
@@justinbuice I'm hoping some day BMW learns what we liked about it, and makes an EV version as close to it as possible (just with EV drivetrain). So far, IMO, the EV makers don't really get it, including BMW.
Haha, you're kidding right? I've driven an E90, and it felt just like my E61, absolutely souless. If I think E90s and E61s feel boring, I cannot even begin to imagine how dreary your F30 must be to drive. The E46, E39 and E38 were the last BMWs with feel.
The e46 is better still.
The whole manual vs auto thing is hilarious to me since I moved to Germany. Every car here is a manual and automatics are a luxury
Yeah bro, it's so sick having a manual 1.8l 3cyl fwd diesel.
Automatic cars are most common here, if you drive manual you're an outlaw that loves to go fast
@@marcuswagner1396 Love my BMW X5 3L 6 cyl gas turbocharged with a ZF 8 speed automatic 💨
Also here in India, we don't get Any Audi,Merc,BMW,Volvo,Jaguar,Range Rover in a manual transmission!
I mean, manual is definitely not a luxury here. It's the fun option. And most the time more reliable.
What amazes me is the amount of great content that came from the e90. This channel is what brought me back to bmw. Even though I haven’t had an e90 for a while I still watched these videos.
I appreciate the kind words! I did manage to squeeze out a lot of content for a fairly ordinary car!
So a couple of things:
1. The wheels and center cap issues, that stems from proper maintenance (or lack thereof) and people simply not washing & protecting their wheels properly. My wheels are from 2016 and no issues at all. Not ceramic coated yet but they're sprayed with P&S Bead Maker every time I wash.
2. A true car guy is someone who simply is passionate about cars. Regardless of what they have in terms of engines and transmissions. Its everywhere where you see guys whos identity is constructed on them driving stick and bashing automatics left and right.
I can drive stick too, but its not a personality trait like some people.
My bimer has the same ZF8 Speed and its super quick and I wouldn't change it.
People don’t realize how corrosion brake dust is
1. Some people are lazy or just don’t care about their cars. This also could have come from a coastal town in Florida.
2. It’s just a fun, unique experience that brings a little mechanical feel back. It’s also damn near impossible to find with most models and that rarity nets it cool points.
Same got an 07 e92 never wash the rims and they look brand new when I wash theM
Welcome to the 340 fam. Glad to have you. Picked up mines over a year ago with the 6speed in estoril blue and i’ve been in love with it ever since😍😍😍
Recently I replaced my E90 too... with an E46 lol
Regarding to the interior, which do you think has a more durable interior?
@@ricksays7133 e46.
The car ride, i think e90 is better.
@@duncanidaho7494 having owned both the e46 is definitely not more durable than the e90 in any aspect
Hey Justin just started watching your videos since I'm starting my research before purchasing my first BMW. Just wanted to commend you on the great job you do from being knowledgeable to the delivery of the content. Good work and thank you
Congrats on joining the f30 family! The steering initially was the biggest disconnect for me as well but over time I've learned to appreciate the innovation and learned to read the way it handles. In some ways it's been a step up but there's still a void for that feeling of nostalgia.
After 1 week and 1,500 miles, this is a pretty comprehensive review. Subscribed! Almost 3 years in with my F30 (328d) and I’m loving it and loving modding it. Enjoy, Justin!
You nailed it Justin. I didn’t research buying my F31 beforehand and have been in catch-up mode since buying it nearly a year ago. Quality control is an issue with BMW and the rims on my car were so unimpressive it’s one of the first big changes I made to it. I also can’t figure out their entertainment system not being more Android or Apple friendly. I just paid $100 for a map update and once I installed it, it was like, “Gee, I should just stick to Waze on my Android phone and forget this limp navigation system.” I look forward to your blogs the same way I did for a new Motor Trend, Road & Track or Car & Driver magazine when I was a teenager - 50 years ago! Keep up the excellent body of work!
I’m still an e90 guy but I’m happy for you and your wife Buice.
I hope everything works out well for you guys.
Thank you we appreciate that!
You deserve every inch of that car, congrats mate ,you are one of my favorite youtubers , can't wait to see all the content on the f30 !
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Justin your cinematography skills are solid, and just an observation the tone of your voice is so calming. It's awesome to see that you kept both cars!
man the pics of the F30 look like they're from the BMW catalog! so fresh and so nice! very jelly over here, but very happy for you as well!
Welcome to the 340i F30 family man enjoy I been enjoying mine since November last year and can't complain at all
I’m heavily considering picking up a 340i, super excited to see what you do, and would greatly appreciate you sharing content around how to keep in tip top condition and future failure points and what to keep an eye on with preventative maintenance! 🔥🔥👍🏻
your e90 videos got me into bmws, and i’ve been looking at buying an f30 for a couple of months now so i am very happy to see you posting videos of this!
I like how you keep your eyes on the road, through the whole driving part!
Happy for you lad. It's nice to see humble people like you get nice things.
Enjoy.
Big congratulations again man! You helped me a ton with my e90 330i and maybe ill hustle a little harder and get me a 340i like you. I LOVE your color choice combo interior with that red is gorgeous! I fell in love with BMW when i took my uncles E93 M3 to prom and ive been hooked ever since, i love the driving experience and the raw sound of the V8 in that
Thank you! Im glad I could help! Those E9X M3’s are incredible cars
Great purchase! Now I can be super relatable to my F30 330i :) thanks for all your work, looking forward to future content.
I’m a e90 guy, I borrowed my father in laws f30 for a 700 mile road trip, I still love my e90 over it any day
Nice! Which F30 was it?
Justin Buice 325i automatic, I’ve got 330i manual, I think I would take manual over power, there’s just not enough opportunity to open up these powerful cars, before your done in second gear you’ve tun out of speed limit! Also your right the f30 seems ginormous compared to the e90!
@@1pjodan The F30 is a bigger car for sure. To be fair though, the E90 is slammed on coilovers so the side by side comparison is a bit exaggerated 😅
Same. I thought about a f30 335i lately. Went for a test drive and guess what? I'm sticking to my 330i e90 lci (manual). The f30 felt a bit weird to me. Who knows maybe i'll change my opinion in few years. Cheers!
Justin Buice have you washed your new beast yet? Then you will realise how big it is!
Would love to see you do more videos about general maintenance on this car. So happy for you man!!!
Great choice man. I'm also from Michigan and had my 340i Msport delivered from Cali so I can get the Mineral Grey/Coral red combo I was looking for. With just a Stage 1 flash and upgraded suspension the car is a BEAST. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with yours.
Had an FRS for 3 and half years. Just picked up the 340i with MPPSK 3 weeks ago and I'm in love. Excited to see this build grow along with mine.
Took a while to get used to the steering on my F30 as well. What really helped make it better was adding springs.
i have been watching for about a year. just 2 months ago i bout my first car. it was an e92 320i. i know it aint that powerful but for driving to and from campus it was perfect for me. it would also comfortably cruise at highway speeds. and thank you justin because i did a number of things from your channel such as painting wheels, changing grilles and restoring headlights.
Congrats, Justin! I really like that you got some pretty standard looking car so there is so much stuff for improvement. I will definitely be following the progress on this car!
Congratulations!!!!🎉🎉🎊🎊 get new BMW whip bro can't wait for the future mods for the car bro
The 340i is great option to upgrade to, almost as fast as the e90 M3 but much less maintenance problems. I have an E90 and look forward to seeing more of your F30 videos
You heard the man! Time to step your center cap game up BMW! 👍🤣
Great choice on the B58 / ZF8 combo! I got my 2018 about a month ago and I absolutely love it! 👍😍
Congrats my bro! Looking forward to the new F30 content! 👍😎
I also went from an e90 to an f30...its just a natural progression. Love your work Jus
Thanks!
Great video!!! I’ve been watching your videos since I got my E90 a few years back. Looking forward to learning about the F30 vs. E90
Just got my 340i can’t wait to start posting content!
LOVE the coral red interior. I loved my F32, never had a problem with it. I think you’ll be really satisfied with it.
One thing I HATED about my f32 was the adaptive throttle. You have to reset it every once in a while if you don’t wanna deal with jerky/jolty driving.
I think having a manual is fun for a “fun” car - but I feel you on the 8-speed automatic. Also, no dad or uncle taught me..... my mom taught me 😅😅
GOOD LUCK WITH THIS BUILD!
Thanks! Yeah some cars like the FR-S should only be had with a manual. It really depends on the car. In this case, I think the 8 speed auto was the right choice for me. Excited to see where this goes 😎
How do you reset the throttle?
It resets every time u change driving mode right?
@@f32440i not sure I get the joke lol yep, that’s what it’s called :)
Change is a good thing, I drove manual for many years, have a 2008 335i automatic that bought last year and absolutely love it, for me its just for touring and not so much performance. Congratulations again on your purchase. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽.
I got my 428i gran coupe m sport about a month ago and love it. It rides smooth drives smooth and is pretty quick for 250hp. BMW did a really good job with f30-36 generation. Only thing that kinda bugs me is the transmission when you let off the gas after getting on it. Tends to sit a high rpm like it doesn’t know if it should downshift or upshift. But that’s solvable if you use paddles. But all in all the cars are amazing. Can’t wait to start modifications and can’t wait to see your mods. Best of luck 🙌
Great initial review, great car! Looking forward to the new content!
Congrats! You are spot on regarding the differences between the E90 and and F30. I picked up a 2011 328i and compared to our 2015 335i Msport, the e90’s steering is far better. I find the F30’s overall interior build quality is definitely a step up from the E90. Size wise when we park them next to each other, the F30 looks like a 5 series compared to the 328i.
Our 335i has the beginning of an oil pan gasket leak and we’re debating trading it in on a 340i. I’m hearing that engine is turning out to be a winner.
Cant wait to see F30 content, Enjoy.
Just subscribed. I’m looking into getting a 340 soon as well and I’m getting real excited to get behind that b58. Been seeing a lot of hype about the possibilities with it and I’m excited to see your experience with it too. Please keep all the good content rolling man I’m sure I’m not the only one that really appreciates it.
I've owned a 335i e90 and currently own an f30 335i and I'll never go back to the e90 but I will forever have so much love for that car more than any other. It was my first car. The f30 to me is just different 🤯
I bought a 328i sport package 2013,BMW was my wife dream, absolutly love this car
Rides so nice,i used to hate bmw thanks to scotty but we bought for sunday drives as a toy
That’s good to hear! I think Scotty Kilmer gives good advice for people who don’t care about cars and just want to get from A to B. Yes BMW’s are more expensive to own than say Toyota, but they also offer a driving experience that you wont find in many other cars.
Scotty is biased.
Loving this , keep up the good work ! U cant imagine how many peoples lives uve changed .
congrats on the upgrade. I am a fan of your videos.
So happy for you bro! Been waiting to see when you’d make the jump to the F series
- Michigan native
Im excited for this! Im in the Port Huron area 😎
Awesome video! I like the upgrade. Wishing you many happy miles in your 340i
Looking forward to more b58 content! I had an issue on my 2016 which is apparently fairly common. The steering rack makes a clicking noise. It can be detected by moving the wheel side to side when it’s in park. If you have a clicking noise, BMW will replace the steering rack under warranty.
Congratulations 🎊 @Justin
Came across your video. Should have seen before I bought my 340i although I should said I really do love it and is super fun and fast right off the bat. Thank you for sharing and God bless🙏
Congrats for the buy! I think it was the natural choice to make after the E90. I would’ve searched an M Package one over interior/exterior Colors but hey, it’s a 340i so it’s letting you space for upgrades and you start with the most powerful option of engines aside the M3.
Good luck with a car mate. Cant wait to see all the changes u will make.
Congratulations on the new car . What a big upgrade 🔥🔥
Solid review. Having a E93 335i and seeing your take on the F series, it’s totally relatable. I just wish they never got rid of hydraulic steering.
Update: Got a M240i. LOVING THE B58 SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESH
Went from a E39 525i to a F31 330d 2 days ago, love it so far!
Congrats on your new car, the EPS will grow on you, and I am personally waiting for the screen upgrade please
I'll be watching closely at your experience with the B58 man. I had a n52 e90 and now have the n52 in my 2011 X3. A lot of your videos helped me with maintenance with that. But I'm looking at upgrading to a X3 M40i which has the B58, also the same transmission pairing I believe (ZF 8 Speed). Don't listen to the 2 people man! This is the evolution of car ownership and I think you made a fantastic decision.
I have been driving stick all my life. First car in 2000 was a 1990 Taurus SHO, then a 1999 E36 5-speed I bought in 2004, 2002 E46 5-Speed I bought in 2017, 2000 E39 Wagon I bought in 2018 (auto but had my E46 concurrently), and now I have a 2018 F30 330i w/ZF I bought in 2021. I honestly never thought the day would come where I wouldn't see myself driving a stick. But, I bought my wife a 2017 X3 sDrive28i last year and after experiencing that ZF 8-speed, I was changed. The ZF in my 330 is tuned much better than our X3 and holy cow does it shift fast. Manual mode on these things work great too. And the upside, my wife can now drive my car 👍 So, let's not call it a fanboy thing, more like an evolution of your driving experience. I'm not 20 anymore. And let's face it, trying to find an F30 in a manual is very difficult, and trying to find it in the trim you like is like hens teeth. My 330i has so many options, I wouldn't dare trade it for a manual transmission.
Very nice! I have an F30 328i (2016) and absolutely love the car. Bought it CPO in 2019 and it's just a gorgeous, fun car to drive. Lots of very nice features at a good price point.
I was fortunate enough to snag a 2014 BMW 335i F30 w/ 6 speed manual for 33K about 2 years ago. I absolutely love this car!
my e90 had ambient lighting it was lovely. the e93 cabriolet even had some real fancy stuff going on
Love the choice into getting the 340i I also will be getting one, looking forward to the content 🔥
Making me want to upgrade but I'm still not ready to let her go. Maybe in 5 more years. Hopefully by then you would have made enough videos to mentor me through my F30 journey. Thanks for all your work, this is an excellent channel.
You and I have such similar car buying histories! It’s crazy 🤣 xB, E90 & now F30. I totally agree on the steering feel. I am going to miss that about my e-Baby. I would have kept her but she needs a new A/C and it costs way more than I’m willing to pay.
Congratulations! I hope you and your wife enjoy the new edition for many years to come‼️
Awesome very informative In detail and appealing listening to the comparisons between two generations of bmws, it’s cool your keeping both cars adding more to your collection keep up the good work 💪😎
Good video. I have learned not to be wary of DYIing oil changes, etc. Thanks, Justin. I just bought a 2017 340ix.
Justin’s always putting out great quality videos that’s what i love about this channel !
True
Thank you!
havent even watch the vid yet.. already excited due to the quality of the clarity lol. great content. i dont even own any of your cars. but always interested! good stuff brother
So glad you made this purchase whoever is saying it’s a bad purchase is crazy this is such a get upgrad dude. So dope you hit a 340 to and not a 335 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love my 340i - had it for 18 months now. With downpipe, stage 2 tune, and xHP trans tune you'll love it even more.
Welcome to the B58 Brotherhood! Can't wait for the new content!
F30 baby welcome to the family🔥
Looking forward to see your upgrade videos
Best review hands down!! Just got my 2018 340I (l love her!!) and keeping my 2006 E90, 'cause I love her!! They are brilliant.
Happy for you
This channel's about to blow up with all the F30 content
I hope so lol
I like you have a E90 and will be keeping it.
You have bought what I am going to buy, well done mate.
Decent review mate, im looking to go up now from my e90, but i LOVE the e90 steering, i may now just get a better e90.
I went from an 06 e90 xi to an f10 and you mentioned EVERYTHING that was disappointing about the f series. Cracked me up. It was hard to get over the loss of the best steering and feel in the e90. I still miss it. And the xi can pull through corners like nobody’s business. But when I got coilovers (and as long as you are in sport) you get a lot if the “feels” and fear of potholes back. Stock just isn’t the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. But as you build it becomes the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. Good luck with this build. You will be happy with the choice you made. I felt conflicted at first too but in the end you will love it. GET THOSE COIL-OVERS FAST. Godspeed or BC will be just fine for the price point. It will be the most satisfying upgrade you will do to get the BMW feel back. Then you can really enjoy the pull, speed, and quickness of the car without that tinge of regret.
I have had my 2018 340i and I absolutely love it
Nice car man wow ! I have the 328i F30 , manual. Keep up the good work, i always enjoy your videos.
Good going Justin ! Congratulations ! I LIKE IT !
My mom has owned both of these cars. Never any complains. You made a great choice.
About a year and a half ago I was in the market for a used F30 335i. I was ready to pull the trigger since I heard the car was reliable, but then my boy who also had a 2013 335i who brought it second hand paid $4k for a new ECU after jumping his battery which fried the old ECU. Also he had to replace bunch of gaskets, oil leak issues, and the car randomly goes into limp mode. Been a BMW guy, but I need a reliable no nonsense car so I got a brand new loaded Civic. Even though I’m not a BMW owner, I still watch your videos. I hope to be in the market for a G20 M340i once I pay off the Honda. Hopefully by that time you’ll have one too so I can use you for help :)
Thanks for the review Justin, well done. Your reviews and others are pushing me in the direction of purchasing my own F30 340i. As for the guys commenting on your decision to purchase an auto over a manual, clearly these people have never had the pleasure of driving a semi in peak our traffic with a 13 or 18 speed road ranger gear box, I have and give me an auto box any day for city driving.
I am happy for you, enjoy your new car - I AM NOT GIVING UP MY E90..... i love my car
Congrats on the new car! Been watching on and off for a few years. You convinced me to at least consider a BMW 330i when I was car shopping 2 years ago. Ended up getting a Volvo S60 T5, but still have thoughts of lingering thoughts...
I like your choice. The B58 is an outstanding step up from the N52, and it looks nicer. Bigger, but not bad. The eight speed transmission is faster by far. I'm a truck driver, and I drive an E93 Msport. When I get out of that truck, I'm not trying to grab no more gears 😆😆👍I want to hold on and go😆🤣
Cant wait to see the new wheels you got!
happy for u bro!
Aloha, from Hawaii and always watching your video regarding E90. Used to have E90 before but now I have my M235i. The cabin filter of most new BMW cars are located under the glove box. Also I used to be a stick shift driver too but as u mentioned it was a total different experience when I purchased my M235i automatic transmission. Only thing is I can't do your DIY coz you have the 3 series and I have 2 series. More power to your channel and ALOHA
Nice review! I’ve been looking at 340s lately 💪🏼
Congrats on the 340i Justin. I still love my E90. Bought my Acura TLX PMC edition 3 weeks ago. Love the steering wheel on that car and more features included for the same price as a 340i. Hands down I’m an E90 girl!
I'm glad you bought an f30, because I bought one a month ago. I can't wait to see you doing more videos on it! Cheers from Finland.
Millä koneella olevan hankit? Itsekin haaveillut F-korisen ostamista nyt noin vuoden verran. Tällä hetkellä käyn päänsisäsistä vääntöä täysin varusteltu 320d vs. perusvarusteinen 330d. Molemmat tietenkin M-Sport paketilla. :D
@@HenkkaWRC Tällä kertaa itselle tuli 2017vm 330e plugin hybrid.
Thank you for this detailed video:) I’m leaning towards the 340i as my next car since I have a coupe right now I was looking either at the q50 or a 340i
Those leather seats tho!! It’s a clean ride man !! Love the video
Nostalgia & the feel of manual transmission is what does it for me. It's not about "street cred" just the feel of it
I get that. I probably wouldn't have got an auto if I didn't own at least one manual car
Justin Buice I hope the bmw was 50k brand new and not what you paid for it because you could buy a used m3,m4 for 50k alllll day
Meme Master LOL I didn’t pay a penny close to that
I love to drive my manual e90, but I start to drive touge and more fast I go the more Im pissed I need to put my hand out of the wheel and be not so secure on the mountain road (I hope it makes sense =D )
I wanna drive stick shift but there's absolutely 0 nostalgia there because I don't have a dad LMAO
awesome car, man! I'd upgrade the steering wheel and the infotainment over time... other than that the interior is top! As far as the exterior bits - I am sure you'll do a hell of a job modifying those :))) Congrats on the great purchase! Drive safe
I don’t have a E90 anymore but I’m still subscribed keep the videos coming! Nice car BTW
hell no it wasn't B58 is beast of a motor welcome to the club!!!!
