Quel talent !
The best live account I know of the Etudes Symphoniques. Ashkenazy's intelligent understanding of the compositional structure and the poetry and drama therein is perfectly conveyed.
Grandissimo Ashkenazy. Enorme talento e musicista completo.
I’ve got this marvellous music on a LP with Murray Perahia at the grand piano and I really love his interpretation but I must admit that this is really at the same level- really master class! This is a masterpiece by the composer considered it’s only no 13 in opusnumber! The theme is devised by Schumanns English friend William Sterndale Bennet.Alas what a genius he was Schumann! Bravo Vladimir!🎹🙏🏻🙏🏻
People forget Ashkenazy’s pianistic brilliance because he had too much of a need for musical expression….the piano simply couldn’t contain him, so he moved into conducting and took off like a rocket. I absolutely adore Perahia’s playing, which for me is most mesmerizing in his duets with Radu Lupu, another absolute monster genius, but he is somehow lacking the intense fire element that burns in Ashkenazy’s art, and also Lupu’s. For me, Perahia’s art lies in a subtlety which, while it’s intellectually fascinating and emotionally fulfilling, I wait for him to open it up and let the fire of a piece consume him combined with the excitement of listening to him control it. This can be heard again and again in this performance by Ashkenazy. I guess I’m trying to say that I look for the fullest kaleidoscope of emotional possibility in a pianist’s arsenal, and, for me, Ashkenazy hits so many more colors and patterns across more musical genres than every pianist I’ve heard. Luckily, I fully enjoy other brilliant artist’s work and love their contributions to the understanding of the works they play, unlike those with a strong bias who listen to others only to compare them very unfavorably with their favorite. You appear to be the same kind of listener! Please don’t imagine my intent here is to express anything but my own preferences….we can only speak for ourselves when discussing artists, and I would never wish to denigrate anyone else’s favorites!
I love how Ashkenazy integrates the posthumous variations within the overall context of the piece. It made me realize how much I’ve disliked the model of adding them later before the finale. Wonderful performance!
Thank you for putting the R. before Schumann as there were two Schumanns, Clara and Robert. Clara was more well known in their day and she greatly helped both Robert and Brahms succeed.
It's absolutely wonderful to hear Vladimir Ashkenazy play Schumann's Symphonic Opus 13 Etudes, it is completely annoying to watch his hands which are not in synch with the music. Perry London
Ashkenazy was undoubtfully one of Schumann’ s greater interpreters. His recording of the complete piano pieces is a treasure.
"Interpreters?" What exactly is there to 'interpret?'
Quel talent !
Ashkenazy is a full orchestra on the piano. Love him.

Account? Isn't that a bit pretentious? The word you are looking for is 'performance.'
Wow, that is an amazing 4th etude. Best version that I've ever heard!

Beautiful. Great to see this live performance recording, too. Thanks!!!
Grandissimo! Precisione, grande tecnica e interpretazione sublime.
Thank you Maestro.. we love youuuuuu !!!! And Schumann of course.
This video is a treasure. What marvelous playing!
He makes it look so easy... but this etudes are waay to difficult. What a great pianist!
It's hard for me to wrap my head around how a pianist can have such a vast repertoire at such a highly refined level. .. ? .
He said that he worked like insane.

Practise practise and then more practise
Also the amazing fact is that he learnt most of his classic repertoire after he left Russia
Marvellous interpretation. Thank you for uploading!
today 7/6 is his birthday...a brilliant pianist who gave us the gift of his music for decades
UnA interpretazione bellissima bravo
Wonderful! Loved every moment. Thank you very, very much.
Truly one of the VERY greatest pianists of ALL TIME.

A stirring and emotionally charged performance.

The supplementary variations 1 to 3 are inserted after etude iii, and the supplementary variations 4 and 5 after etude viii.
Great interpretation!
I love this piece and Azkenazy's playing as well ❤
Thank you for sharing this video!
He's such a great polyphonist. Étude 11 is wonderfully balanced in tone.

Completely off-topic
Quite extraordinary.
What a fabulous pianist Ashkenazy is/was.
l'aigle vol seul He is still alive but not giving recitals any more , but still making recordings.
hermosa obra
So powerful!
Great!
Far superior, and in all aspects, than my old Pollini/Deutsche Gramophon CD
33:24 it sounds like heavy rain 😂😂
Sublime, fuera de este mundo

Beautyful piece of music. Wondering why it was not so much successful during Schumann's life
Because of one word...Chopin.
Étonnant
Etude 8 (Variation 7) is Schumann's finest
Ashkenazy. Zimmerman. Pollini. These 3 names are the pianists with absolute control over technic; everybody else come after those 3 names.
Hamelin better than all sokolov volodos
Askenazy's style is combination of Ritcher and Giles.
Russian school
Ich liebe Zwickau.
You'll hear this sample on this on the Beatles' Revolution #9 30:25-30:29
Gieseking, Sofronitsky and Anda on this work are of a greater level

I haven't heard some of these variations......😂
so original. if not for his illness Schumann not Beethoven would be considered the greatest cimposer of all time.
Depends on whose considering whom.
Beethoven is not GOAT
Schubert as well
100% pointless comment. Try commenting on best F1 pilots.
Schumann is a great composer indeed but illness or not, I do not agree with your comment.
Askenazy is a better pianist than being a conductor
Great musician in every way, also as a conductor.
