A memorable recital in every respect. I have always ranked Ashkenazy among the small elite of very great pianists from the latter half of 20th Century. These are outstanding interpretations, technically flawless and artistically all encompassing.
I couldn’t agree more! He took some of the focus away from himself by conducting, but he never lost a bit pianistically. And he was so humble, never wanting to put himself forward or exert his personality. He was always in service to the music, which is truly rare.
He played it in recital in Columbia, SC back in early 1990s. We had great seats. Terrific. The other big work was a Brahms Sonata. Not my favorite Brahms.
