How the people at the time did not recognize this as great music befuddles me, but thanks to Clara Schumann, Robert's wife, it lived on and now almost 200 years later we can enjoy it. Thank you Clara and you too Robert.
I’m glad to hear someone else say that! I’m embarrassed to admit I’never taken seriously the sterling fellows after Beethoven and before Brahms. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's too fast for me. Try Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Dresden Staatskapelle on CD for a different "definitive" performance.
Perhaps one of the most romantic and practical opening in any symphony I've heard ever. It starts off somber and tense then springs into moderate yet progressive flurries of joyous ode, fire and freshness of modulations. Schumann etched his strong abilities as a symphonist in this the 2nd.
The 3rd mvmt had to have come from the depths of the Master's heart. Effective and deeply affecting. I adore this orchestra. They have a little something extra. Bravissimi a tutti.
What a super orchestra this is. This is the best performance of this that I have ever heard. Janowski, well he clearly likes his Schumann. And what a marvellous symphony this is.
Note Marek Janowski's modest gesturing: it all serves the music, rather than showmanship. The first thing he does when the audience is applauding is clearly mouth 'Danke schön' to the orchestra. Great guy.
My favourite Schumann symphony. Although all four are wonderful, the Second is to my mind the most unified. I've never been a great fan of slow movements and sometimes skip over them but the Adagio is superb. Another fine performance by the Frankfurt orchestra.
This is funny but when I see a conductor wearing white tie, I know I'll enjoy the performance. Not too fast or overly flamboyant. This was gorgeous. Thank you.
This is my favorite of the four symphonies of Schumann. I would have to say however, that for me, the definitive performance is the Cleveland Orchestra with George Szell. The second movement in the Szell recording is machine precision and the tempo quite brisk. I thoroughly enjoyed this though; a great way to start the morning... thank you Frankfurt!!
I've seen Maestro Janowski conduct Brahms and Beethoven (2nd and 4th of both) from memory. Live performances with audience in Warsaw 2021 and 2022. Unforgettable.
This outstanding orchestra has two Concertini, but also has two principal for every group of instruments; and the excellency: all of them are in same way wonderful soloists. Hence it's impossible not to be an OUTSTANDING ORCHESTRA. His present dirigent is Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the Viena Miracle.
I’m performing this next month and I must confess that I’m not the biggest Schumann fam, but this performance is compelling. The tempo in the second mvt was a little fast for my taste, but Schumann is open to a wide path when it comes to interpretation.
great performance, superbly controlled and driven. especially the difficult 1st movement. But poorly edited as conductor can't be seen at crucial moments. Better to listen.........
from 35:50 ant te coda generally was insanely fast...way too fast. This finale is majestic, sublime. At 36:13 simply became a tango. It is not correctly interpreted.
Indeed, after an inspired performance of a symphonic masterwork, I make it a point to turn to my companion, full of satisfaction and joie de vivre, and declare, "Ahhhh yes- that was so........correct."
You must check out Szell's version, ruclips.net/video/dS65-ZvUSSM/видео.html. Miraculously remastered, it sounds as if it had been recorded last year, with unsurpassed tension and dynamics.
Nice performance, but one of too many conductors who take the THE END bars to the symphony too fast. That just negates the magnificent timpani playing, in arguably the best symphonic bang ending when done right. Bernstein for one gets it... he takes over 15 seconds to end the work at the point where the present performance takes only about 9.
Yes, I agree that the conductor takes liberties by introducing an accelerando that is not in the score. As objectionable as it may be, I found it preferable to the ponderous Bernstein ending. Does Bernstein think that slow equals important or majestic? He does this again with the final variation from Elgar's Enigma Variations. Where just about every other conductor is driving the music to its logical conclusion, Bernstein turns the ending into a funeral dirge. Here is Bernstein conducting the final Enigma variation: ruclips.net/video/JD4KtV4WcBI/видео.html and here is Edward Elgar (or Eddie Elgar as Bernstein, thinking he was on intimate terms with that composer, called him) conducting his own complete Enigma Variations: ruclips.net/video/kaPtKoL-FsM/видео.html
@@ronaldaaronson Any conductor who does the opposite of Bernstein usually gets it right! I loathe Berstein's conducting in anything except Mahler. His Schumann 2 is a grim experience and his Enigma is an abomination. Even Lady Elgar didn't call her husband "Eddie" - what presumption! Having said that I think Janowski does play this too fast, certainly compared to the lovely CD performance by Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Dresden Staatskapelle which has been my favourite for about 40 years.
Maybe not so surprising. Schumann and Wagner new each other and Wagner sometimes sent his scores to Schumann for comment. Robert and Clara Schumann both adored Bach and would study his music together and Schumann was influential in the revival of Bach's music in the 19th century.
Ah! Schumann’s masterpiece! But Janowski’s performance is lamentably dry, lifeless, and rather mechanical. Schumann’s symphonies actually need a lot of help from a great conductor; help that’s sorely lacking here!

Schumann has always been my favorite. If I had to guess, from the age of 16 on. Although Bach will forever be the genius no one will every reach.

The adagio to this one is so brilliant.. its like the first glimpse of the sort of music Brucker would later go on to write..
I love this adagio. The wide intervals in the theme are so evocative. Did you notice the theme is inverted in the last movement?
Fine performance and a superb hall - Janowski is yet another underrated maestro among so many overrated ones
in general this symphony is sooo exquisitely scored, but the first horn part is really to die for, and Marc Gruber does a fantastic job.
Excelente interpretación. Gracias HR por este magnífico concierto.
Der geniale Dirigent leitet das ganze Orchester mit perfekter Dynamik und angenehmer Agogik. Einfach wunderbar!

What an amazing performance of this masterpiece!!! One of the best recordings, of this, that I've ever heard, Bravo Tutti!
Not one standing ovation? This symphony is not easy to play! The Scherzo was awesome.
Impressive performance! I am just a kid but need to play this for orchestra… wish I could play as good as you!
It's nice hearing an orchestra that plays in time as well as playing in tune. There aren't many that do. Well done !
A true Masterpiece from a true genius Schumann 💝🌷
