Well.....that is about as good a performance of Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony as I think I’ve ever heard! No wonder the audience was so swept away at the end. What a privilege to have been there for this event!

This is one of my favorite Beethoven symphonies, with its rollicking, good-natured first movement with its visions of the 7th, to the many moods and gentle, affecting beauty of the second movement that bring the 6th to mind, to the jolly 'scherzo', and then the rhythmical quirks and misplaced accents of the wonderful finale, precursors of the humorous 8th. I've always thought that the 2nd was an underrated work, and that it approaches the greatness of the 3rd more than I've heard it said. In any case, the performance and interpretation here is as good as I've ever heard, and that's quite an accomplishment!

I love their playing in the 4th movement.
To me Beethoven Dvorak and Brahms were the best symphonic composers of the 19th century, in that order(sorry Brahms lover).
In the 4th movement around 28:36 and repeated at 31:13 there is a brief passage that reminds me so much of Dvorak. A Dvorak “flavour “ so to speak.
Obviously Dvorak must have played this symphony when he was a viola player in a Czech orchestra.
Great composers are musical sponges, so being a lover of Dvorak symphonies I couldn’t help but notice this.

Excellent performance. But I'm curious how Orozco-Estrada chose the mix of performance practices he's using. The violins, violas, and cellos are playing without vibrato, as would have been the practice in the late 18th-early 19th century, and this gives a nice, light classical sound. But the double basses are using full vibrato. At least, the principal bass player is; I'm not sure about the others. The brass--horns and trumpets---are using period valveless instruments, but the reeds and flutes are using modern instruments. It works very nicely, and I guess that in the end, that's all that matters.

Is it possible that music is processed and recollected in a different part of the brain than other experiences? For instance, even though it has been at least ten years since I last heard this piece, I remembered it almost note for note. It is the same with me for even more complex works by Mahler and Bartok, for instance. Could it be only with those pieces I like? This fascinates me obviously, and I would love to hear from anyone who has had similar experiences.

I think there must be something like that. I remember almost note by note, harmony by harmony most of the pieces I heard in the past and which I'm fond of. I think I could conduct many of them (actually I do that at home when nobody is looking!). I did it once in the presence of somenone that happened to be a friend and a viola in a symphonic orchestra when I got carried away by a stupendous recording of the Prokofiev 6th and to my surprise, when finished, he told me that I could do a better job then many conductorsa he had worked with. Of course I couldn't as I don't even have a theoretical music education and can hardly read music. But it did lift my spirits!

Truly, a great performance. I admire the hr-Sinfonieorchester! The orchestra is great, but I am not sure about Orozco-Estrada? He is mainly concerned about precision, for him that means above all: rhythm. This is just my amateur opinion: This kind of precision works great with Beethovens Early Symphonies, the first and the second. But last night I heard Orozco-Estrada conducting the Ninth (not with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, it was with the Concentus Musicus, an ensemble founded by Harnoncourt and the Arnold-Schoenberg Chor). And I'm going to listen to his performance with the hr-sinfonieorchester as well, but the record I heard last night was so disappointing. On the other side: Orozco-Estrada conducting Rachmaninovs Sinfonische Tänze was wonderful... Maybe the Ninth is something he had to fail with.
