Bach - Cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BWV 61 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

  • 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is filled with special effects, which is probably due to the young age at which Bach composed the work. In the daring opening section, Bach combines the ancient Advent melody 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland' with a French royal overture that would have sounded at home in Louis XIV’s palace of Versailles. Such an overture was played as the king entered, which is very fitting for the reading on the first Sunday of Advent, when Jesus enters Jerusalem as a king riding on a donkey.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on November 30th 2013 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.
The English subtitling for this cantata was sponsored by the American Bach Society. The translation was made by Daniel R. Melamed and Michael Marissen. For an annotated version of the text and translation, see bachcantatatexts.org/BWV61.htm.

I hope you mean recitatives by Bach, and not specifically to these singers’ interpretations! Not only are Bach’s recitatives heartfelt and expressive, they also tend to be difficult to sing, as well, so when the individual arias are performed separately from the cantatas, the recitatives are usually omitted. The arias are even _more_ difficult to sing!

The hymn tune, “Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland” (“Savior of the nations, come”) isn’t unusual for Bach at all! The words were written by Martin Luther, with the melody based on the Latin plainchant, “Veni redemptor gentium.” Bach used this hymn tune for this cantata; for a short chorale prelude for organ (from his “Little Organ Book,” or “Orgelbüchlein,” one of his best known organ pieces); and _twice_ in his famous set of 18 chorale preludes for organ. This cantata is very popular for both professional and amateur choirs, as well.

    0:07 1. Ouverture
    Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,
    Der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
    Des sich wundert alle Welt,
    Gott solch Geburt ihm bestellt.
Now come, Saviour of the Gentiles,
    Known as the Virgin’s Child;
    All the world marvels that
God has ordained for Him such a birth.
    3:11 2. Recitativo
    Der Heiland ist gekommen,
Hat unser armes Fleisch und Blut
    An sich genommen
Und nimmet uns zu Blutsverwandten an.
O allerhöchstes Gut! O supreme Good!
Was hast du nicht an uns getan?
    Was tust du nicht
    Noch täglich an den Deinen?
Du kömmst und läßt dein Licht
    Mit vollem Segen scheinen.
    The Saviour has come;
    Our poor flesh and blood
    He has taken upon Himself
And accepts us as blood relations.
What have You not done for us?
    What do You not do
    Still daily for Your people?
You come and let Your Light
    Shine with full Blessing.
    4:33 3. Aria
Komm, Jesu, komm zu deiner Kirche
Und gib ein selig neues Jahr!
    Befördre deines Namens Ehre,
Erhalte die gesunde Lehre Maintain sound doctrine,
Und segne Kanzel und Altar! And bless pulpit and altar!
Come, Jesus, come to Your Church
And grant us a blessed New Year!
Promote the honour of Your name,
    Maintain sound doctrine,
    And bless pulpit and altar!
    9:30 4. Recitativo
Siehe, ich stehe vor der Tür und klopfe
an. So jemand meine Stimme hören wird
und die Tür auftun, zu dem werde ich
eingehen und das Abendmahl mit ihm
    halten und er mit mir.’
‘See, I stand before the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the
door, I will go in to him and have supper
with him and he with me.’
    10:41 5. Aria
    Öffne dich, mein ganzes Herze,
    Jesus kömmt und ziehet ein.
Bin ich gleich nur Staub und Erde,
Will er mich doch nicht verschmähn,
Seine Lust an mir zu sehn,
    Daß ich seine Wohnung werde.
O wie selig werd ich sein!
    Open, my whole heart:
    Jesus comes and moves in.
Though I am but dust and earth,
    Yet He would not disdain
To find His pleasure in me,
So that I become His dwelling.
Oh, how blessed I shall be!
    15:23 6. Chorale
    Amen, amen!
Komm, du schöne Freudenkrone, bleib nicht lange!
    Deiner wart ich mit Verlangen.
    Amen, amen!
Come, you fair crown of joy, do not delay for long!
    I await you with longing.

Just a short comment; I do not quite understand the last part of the text-introduction; as far as I remember from my Bible, Jesus did not ride into Jerusalem on a donkey the first day of Advent, but on Palm Sunday. It is also a little odd using the image in the context of Advent, as the very concept of Advent is to await His birth...
