How to Deal with Incompetent People

If you are watching this RUclips channel, you are a high performing person. Otherwise you would be watching something else. So you are probably hard working, good at your job, super smart, well dressed and well put together. You are a high performer.
There is a problem in business that high performing people struggle with: dealing with incompetent people. Incompetent people drive you insane. This is a problem you need to realize you have and how to deal with it. This is a conversation I wish someone had with me when I first started my career, because it would have saved me so many headaches.
I am going to start with what NOT to do when dealing with an incompetent person. If you get nothing from this video, take this one piece of advice. Do not go into a rage. This is your natural impulse because you are trying to get things done. This person is an obstacle to you. Your natural impulse is to do three things:
    1) Confront the person
    2) Contact their boss
    3) Get them fired
Do not do any of these things. These are negative actions that are not going to help you achieve your goals. So in dealing with incompetent people, you should NOT go into a rage.
The first level is to avoid the situation. Spend as little time as possible dealing with incompetent people. As soon as you realize you are dealing with an incompetent person, instead of going into a rage, try to focus your mind on removing yourself from that situation as quickly as possible. You are in the situation because you need something. But think about how you can get what you need and move on. If you turn the situation into a big deal, all that will happen is it turns the situation into a big time sink. It is going to take time you could be spending focused on things that are more productive. Do not waste your time. So if you can do nothing else, try to avoid the situation.
If you are able, you can move to the second level of maturity, which is to appreciate their contribution. Now this might be difficult if they are really incompetent. But I believe that everyone is trying to do their best. They might not be up to your standards, but maybe they have a different background then you. Maybe they have had different training then you. So if you can switch your mindset from “this person is incompetent” to appreciating their contribution, that shows your maturity. This cannot be fake appreciation. You need to really appreciate what they are bringing to the table.
If you can achieve that, you can move to the third level of maturity. This is where it gets tough. This is going to take a lot of humility. You need to realize you are the same. You and this incompetent person are the same individual. On a macro level, we all share the same human experience. We all share growing up, relationships, making a living, and death. It is true that we all have different experiences. But we are just different perspectives in this same crazy thing we call life. We are all the same.
Neither Zach De Gregorio or Wolves and Finance Inc. shall be liable for any damages related to information in this video. It is recommended you contact a CPA in your area for business advice.

I am a supervisor of an “incompetent” employee who is forcing me to do his job for him in order for my department to stay on track and meet deadlines, and as a result my performance and productivity has gotten affected by that in a negative way as I am not contributing to his production MY precious time that I should be working on MY OWN assignments. What I did was tell them that it's their responsibility, not mine. If they're asking for help then give a little bit of assistance, but if the work they pass on to you is wrong or is a mess- let him sink because they will share the accountability with you if something goes wrong. So, just say NO when you realize things are going south and leave them to fail. Don't put your ass on the line for a person that will not do the same to help you when you're in need.

Incompetence is unnacceptable because it's your profession and for over achievers thats a core principle to their work ethic. Despite different levels of growth, and, cognitive ability at differing stages of a careers development, people have a responsibility to educate themselves. Not taking into account perception which may be issues of communication, or the deeper cause which may be a lack of motivation to learn. Conflict avoidance makes problems fester.

My incompetent designer does much of this and a lot of it is wrong or way past it’s due date. My customers are constantly frustrated with me because of him. Over time, shit rolls downhill. When the incompetence comes from your team lead and you cannot move forward until they approve certain actions and you have to repeatedly remind them. You ask them for assistance and they give you the wrong answers or don't respond at all. If they do respond, they give a half hearted response and don't thoroughly address the question. You kind of have to depend on the them to get through your job. When they fail, YOU fail. Moral of the story: sometimes it's not us. It's them. When you've addressed the issue several times and they refuse to change, they're the jerk. When the dysfunction negatively impacts customers, it's a terrible situation and the best way to get through it is to leave.

They still dont understand the basics of our industry. One guy didnt know what a title was. The average person who owns a house knows they bought the title. The thing is he is a sales manager for us who are property developers. Thats the equivalent of a sales manager for apple not knowing they sell tech. Its insane and everyone thinks Im overly concerned.

This is hard to swallow, but nourishing at the same time. When someone else impacts you negatively, it takes a very self aware person to realize we are all connected and going on the attack hurts you more than them. Taking a positive approach will have a better outcome every time. Not easy to learn this but it’s true. Karmic boomerang.

Maybe you only got 8 wight checks done instead of 10. Maybe you were off on 4 minutes time on a temperature check. As long as it's all good. No harm, no foul. But...if the CCP wasn't met, then you immediately put the product on hold, and report it. That's the difference between harmful and non harmful cheating. That's just my opinion.

But overall it was very helpful 10 minutes out of the year I've been working with an incompetent coworker. Strangely, you hit it on the nose, my job has over 2,000 people so we see incompetency on a daily basis and it has to get re-done. But I have an incompetent coworker who consistently installs material incorrectly, upside down, to short, wrong colors etc. and everyone complains about him. Clearly the video is about a beautiful scenario where the incompetent person is great and isn't arrogant or negligent, just "incompetent" or better yet, isn't incompetent but we are misjudging the person in some way. How do you become incompetent though? Isn't the arrogance, negligence and stupidity the main path? I work with people that are really bad at what they do and some of them are not the problem, they try hard, and like you say, they just need some tolerance - still they should be fired in favor of someone competent immediately because workplace is not a charity. When I get really mad is when I'm talking about the majority of ridiculously arrogant and negligent assholes that are impossible to ignore. I do avoid them and they do their ass-kissing to make sure we good, but the outcomes of what I professionally do are life or death, literally. Your excuses for incompetent people can't apply here even if they are the nicest in the world and they are trying really really hard.

Forgive me but I'm basically venting online here to a bunch of strangers who whether they care to read or not doesn't matter because it's my own way of therapy for the moment.... But hey, if someone has a better idea of how to deal with this I am alllll ears.......or rather, eyes... because.... we're reading.... anyway:
I'm a manager at a restaurant.... I needed someone to make a meal they missed. They don't speak the language, and they think they're they shiz, and could never possibly make a mistake. I ask them nicely if they can get this meal out, I show them the ticket so they know, hey... you must of missed this, it's okay, i just need it done. They say, no, because it never came through and they have to make all these other meals. I say, again, "Listen, I'm telling you this person has been waiting for 14 minutes and whether it came through or not it has to get done. None of those other guys can get their food because it's a line, first come first serve, and this is the next person in line, so they take priority, so I need this one first, can you please make that?"
They shake their head and go on to make another dish for another order which is now going to sit and get cold because the orders have to go out in order. The guy aggressively, and disrespectfully makes a gesture to get out, when I'm his manager (recently hired :P), and I should make this guys meal because he doesn't miss meals and there's no way he missed this one.... in spite of the very person.... sitting... without their meal for both of us to see.
This guy has done this like 20 times to me over the last month and a few hours ago, I yelled at him until his attitude was gone. I've never yelled at anyone I've every worked with, in the 20 + years I've been working. Since I don't have the authority to fire him, I call my boss and have to feel like a freaking child in elementary school telling the teacher rather than being able to deal with it myself and tell them everything...
Anyway... I'm like, "You want me to make it? Okay. I'm going to make it and the owner can deal with you later."
I apologized later before they left for yelling at them, but part of me wishes he took a swing at me so I could just put him on the ground.
I'm old school. If someone doesn't do their job... I fire them and get someone who will. This guy, for some reason is allowed to stay at his job in spite of being morbidly obese, extremely slow in a very fast paced environment, non-compliant garbage employee. Who thinks if a mistake's made and it's not his fault he doesn't have to make the meal.... and even when it is his fault like this case clearly was because I pulled up his past tickets and there it was... right in front of both of us to see.... and he still thinks it isn't his fault so he doesn't have to make it.
I don't care who makes the mistake, I care that the service gets done and the job is done right... I've taken the blame a few times on his behalf just to get his fat ass to move, and that works 50% of the time!
Watching this video gave me something to reflect on for sure, but I feel like my work environment, being a restaurant is a different situation... I'm standing in the same kitchen with the guy, my job is to manage the place and make sure the service is done to the standard the owner set, and if I have a cook... not a head chef... just a cook... with a big ego, giving me this shit day in and day out, then it ruins the reputation of the restaurant... It's not like I can walk away and deal with it later. Honestly if he does it again, I'm just going to treat him like child, and as I make the meal in front of him go, "Oh you don't want to do your job? You want me to do your job for you? Okay here I go, watch me do your job..." Then I'll explain how to cut bread, and make a sandwich, or a wrap, in the most painfully obvious terms to insult his intelligence in front of the rest of the kitchen, and just keep doing it until his ego gets the better of him and he just does his job, or quits. If he wants to act like a child I will treat him like a helpless child.
There are times in business to be nice.... but when you're the manager and are responsible for getting the work done and that all the rest of the employees are trained adequately and getting their job done, and they don't do it regularly, I'm not the type to give a damn about a person's feelings on the matter, you either perform, or you don't.
I sound like a real bastard but I promise you, I am a very patient boss, I don't care how slow someone is, or if they make mistakes, all I care about is that everyone's learning, everyone's improving, and everyone's working together to fix the mistakes... all this guy cares about is living in a country he can't speak the language in, and telling his higher ups that they're wrong and he's right so he doesn't have to do that job he was hired to do for that particular customer. I get a call a week from random people asking if we're hiring every week... Why is this piece of shit occupying that job they want?
    And P.S.
For the past month I've worked with him I've been nice to him, I've thanked him every moment he get's something out sincerely, but he shows me zero respect and this moment I just explained in great detail broke what patience I had left for this individual. 1 month of this.... If my boss doesn't do something about him, or if he doesn't change his attitude, and I have to work every day with him... I swear I'm gonna find another place that cares about respect for everyone, and getting their job done. They can keep their obese pet, and praise him for shitty work til the business falls over.
