I was once accidentally a slacker chad. (Not long term just for about a day and a half) I was working in a huge company that had a budget for each team to have a paid day with a budget for each person to do team activities. So I asked my boss if we are planning anything and she said that she hasn't but if I wanted to I can plan it and she will go along, I told her I really want a paid day not working (yes I actually told her and told everyone repeatedly throughout this story) anyway, I really wanted a break, so I found enough discounts and activities that cover a day so I don't have to work for a day but still be paid (and remember, telling people this all the time, not only not hiding it, just telling them) the other two teams in the department asked if they can join, I said sure (more people, more fun, more discounts, less work time) So I organized it for the department , I got the company to pay for all of us to go bowling, eat in a restaurant, and go to a 3d movie just because I wanted a day not working (and again, I can not stress this enough, I was very honest and blunt about it) Anyway, it was a really fun day, a week after I get a notification that I got a small reward, I asked my boss what for, and she said for showing team spirit and organising this day, I again reminded her that I was really just slacking off and getting the company to pay for it, she said it was still team spirit yada yada I got about 50$ in vouchers... So... To your question, yes I have worked with many slacker chads, and for a day and a half I was one
Make work you do more visible - True. For me as a manager it's actually annoying. I set objectives and I don't care to be cc'd in all the emails and incited to all the meetings you have to accomplish those. We meet monthly to discuss progress, you can talk to me about challenges otherwise I just think you can't handle your work. BUT I have realized that my own managers want to see YOU more than they want to see what you DO. So lesson learnt.

0:35 As a software engineer, I naively ensured our releases were bug free as I'd find problematic issues and fix them before they even make it live. The problem was that no one knows I was doing this. Other people were getting credit for "a great release". What I did was let those issues surface at prime time and let them panic, then I'd offer to fix it since I noticed the problem way earlier and just push out a fix in a timely matter. Not only do I make myself look good, but I make my those who were previously getting credit look bad. It was win-win! This happens a lot in software engineering. If you let the fire happen and then offer to put out the fire in a timely matter you get noticed. But prevent the fire from ever happening? Crickets.
I got fired because i was doing right my job, all my modules in my software were realeased w/o bugs but one week later i got fired and they said i wasn't doing my job as the other developers that "work" all day fixing their own bugs FML.
In the Air Force, I had a civilian boss tell me on a trip to headquarters while drunk at dinner that she puts low-caliber people in for promotion so that they won't be competitive with her when it's time for her to promote up. That's really great, and we wonder why the govt. is so jacked up. I'm sure a lot of people in companies do that, too.
I've heard the same from someone very senior. It's only natural to want to protect your position. The only remedy is that recruitment decisions should not be left to a manager, but to the manager's manager. Sadly this rarely happens and hence the good candidates are often rejected. On the other hand managers rarely see contractors as a threat, though even then it can happen.. It's one reason I've avoided going permanent for a very long tine, that and the higher rates given to contractors.
It's highly infuriating how manipulating this is, though. It sucks that we live in a world that rewards Slacker Chad who excels at manipulating perception, if nothing else. The workplace is a giant lesson in psychology.
It is... Well maybe abnormal psychology 🙃 Honestly being a social scientist is such an advantage in analyzing what's happening. It doesn't make it less infuriating... But once you know the dynamics and social constructs in play your better equipped to deal with them - out use them to your advantage. I honestly believe the only way we change the game is by playing it until we're in a position of power.
I'm a 70's baby, There was a day when you got promoted because you were the hard worker who didn't complain, Now the the lazy worker kisses enough ass and self promotes themselves and they are rewarded.... I quit companies because of chads! because i can't be lazy and want to be promoted at the same time.
I needed this video in my life. I've been the nice girl in relationships, family matters and work. It has gotten me used, over looked, ignored, ideas stolen, taken for granted and passed up for promotions despite being the hardest work in the office
We're socialized to sacrifice ourselves, blame ourselves and change ourselves. We need to dismantle the social constructs that holds us back. Step one: learn how to make these rules work for you. This definitely can be true. Many managers don't know how to oversee work without micromanaging, and most were grossly ill prepared to manage remotely. IMHO Slacker Chad isn't getting promoted when good leadership is in place.
Absolutely! These situations are more likely to happen under a bad boss or a boss who is stretched too thin. They don't know what's going on and if they do they don't properly respond. Time to go. And I'm speaking from experience.
I'm a "hard worker" and this is textbook what happens in the workplace. Honestly, it's extremely difficult but I'm trying to move away from this mindset and build more efficiencies to save my time/sanity. In my next role, I'm taking the "Slacker Chad" value with me. I'm learning to ask what are the key deliverables for the business and work on these. "Hard work" leads to nothing but burnout and resentment.
The problem with being Chad is that the higher up you go, the closer ane closer you become to being exposed. Charm, charisma and likeability will help you rise the ranks, but without the foundations of skill and competency, eventually there will be nowhere to hide, because once you're at the top, you are on your own. You then just have to hope that your subordinates don't get frustrated and stop covering for you. As 50 cent once said, "Who you know will put you on... what you know will keep you there."
I don’t even care anymore about my coworkers trying to sabotage me. I already got turned down two promotions because of these people. If I change to conform, I feel like I’m not being real with myself. I don’t even care if I get fired or whatever happens to me, I know that anything I lose in life was because it wasn’t meant for me and something greater will come my way. I’m not going to change my work ethic for anyone. I like to work hard and I like to learn. I’m glad I’m getting experience for whatever I do in the future regardless of where I’m at.
It doesn't matter how hard you work at your job, it doesn't matter how good you are at your job, it doesn't matter how much money you've made for the company or how many customers you've brought in and retained for the company. Everything comes down to likeability. Lazy people are LAZY, but they are also laid-back, funny, don't take themselves too seriously and easy to get along with, and a lot of them have endearing personalities. Your boss is going to overlook your job performance and your valuabe assets over that. It's not fair, it's not right, but it's true.
i had a friend who got fired from a lot of job and he works on hard and tries to take it seriously but he is very timid and to him self and not really outgoing. (the job is graphic designer) do you think that because of the personality he gets fired from jobs? I mean hes good at the graphic design but maybe its not up to what the boss wants? I dunno.
My boss did that and promoted Lazy Chad over everybody's objections. Only there was no one to pickup the slack. My team had to interact with that Lazy Chad and I... arranged for Lazy Chad portfolio to shift to one that didn't overlap with my team's and therefore Lazy Chad couldn't rely on them to do this work. He got exposed and got demoted within a year.

This is true, you need workers bees to keep the hive going. If all you have are queens who will do the grunt work? I don't need recognition or accolades but if I get passed on for promotions I start interviewing right away then leave. Well, I'm always interviewing regularly but that's another story.

That's the irrational subworld of human relationships. Impressions and marketing are far more important to practical effects than actual work. Being a friend of your superior (false friend, it doesnt matter) and flatteter is more effective about promitions and success than anything else.

Oh yes, someone was promoted to supervisor in my post and after like 9 excruciating months he couldn't handle the job because he actually had to work and learn. He was demoted, management use him as a backup only.
Most of the times, these Chads will blame it on the lack of people and make justifications to hire more.. there will be a way for them to get away with it.
I talked to my co-workers yesterday about this what I said was if u see one person working hard and the other person standing around talking doing almost no work but u both get paid the same amount why work hard it's stupid. Working hard doesn't mean u will get everything u want in life I personally known friends and family that have worked hard thier whole life and have nothing to show for it.

15 years fed gov you learn a lot of psychology the biggest problem with the gov is people are not paid to produce anything so it all turns into a game the few people who do have a functioning job are managed by a top heavy management so basically everybody is just trying to play the game to jump to the next level. I was a construction worker prior grew up on a farm and was in the military when I got into a gov job I was somewhat scared thinking I would not be good enough for the agency boy was I wrong almost all the the people I worked with didn't do anything and I grew upset with them and wondered why they didn't work, well over the process of 15 years I figured out why they didn't care, your not rewarded for a work ethic your rewarded if you play the game they set, it seems like most of the people welling to play this game I would not want to hire in the private construction sector. Its really sad, kills the soul if you have a work ethic. Ive come to the point I just treat the job as a pay check and health insurance and have my own side investments and business on the Side doing construction work. The video is spot on
I was once managed by a guy like this, and although I’m not in the lazy-camp, I actually learned a lot on how to get promoted in my industry. I’ve learned to merge hard work with smart work… that way I don’t feel dead inside when making these moves. Overall, It’s sad but it’s literally the lay of the land.
I don't think hard work is ever the way to go. It should be smart work with necessary work. Some work sucks and is unavoidable, but hard work it not something to aim for, it is something that should be minimised by smart work and done only when it is the most efficient way forward and unavoidable. If a delivery man drives each time with one package then goes to the warehouse to get the next one instead of putting them all in the track and planning a route it does not make him better at his job despite the fact he works very hard
My male boss fired me because due to gall bladder surgery on Thursday & I was back on Monday. He had just given another co-worker 6 weeks of paid leave to have her gall bladder surgery & it embarrassed him as everyone knew I had asked for a week off & was told I could have 3 unpaid days leave....lol After he fired me the old boss called & called & texted & emailed me for info & passwords which I had put together for the new person & he threw all in the trash to insult me on my last day.....BIG mistake. I never read nor listened to any of his communication after I left. I blocked him on my phone to stop the crap. I don't work there anymore....lol...lol He was fired within a month of his firing me because he didn't know jack sh*t & I knew he was going to get wacked....lol That was a good life lesson for him as we learn from our mistakes!
I was asked by my leader to help a trainer prepare for a class. I showed her a flaw in a workflow and my fix. The trainer said "let's bring this to a workgroup, I'll invite you". Several weeks later an email goes out that she brought it and got it updated etc, never said one word about swiping it from me. I did have proof of my showing her but my leader didn't care to address it
That's super annoying. If it's something big and promotable that when it's worth staking credit. And now you know you have a Rachel in the Trainer so you can navigate future dealings with her.

@Ashka Shah that video was really about taking credit for your own work instead of handing credit over to people who contributed. Owning your awesomeness is really important. Too many people are happily sharing credit, only to have the Chads and the Averys of the world overstate their contributions and take over as the main character in the accomplishment instead of a supporting or contributing player.
Exactly, work like you get paid very little and don't volunteer for anything or you will get stuck with other items on your "to do" list, keep it short, keep it simple, do your shift and go home. Don't make any promises or obligations, life is too short!

Slacker chad here, this is good advice. Take note of what metrics your superios send reminders of on a daily basis, excel at those and learn to fly under the radar for everything else. Remember to be loud and proud when you do well.
Yup! Hard work alone will get you overlooked if not held back. It is just a fact in the work place. They don't care who does the grunt work or how hard it is as long as it gets done. I saw a book about managers that actually admitted that some will never have the work ethic as others & it encouraged managers to just keep off loading the work on those willing to do more than their share & just let the others keep skating by. It said something like "you can't change personalities..." . Managers want to look good to those above them & they will promote a backslapper in a heartbeat while holding back their hardest worker. It's very common from what I've seen in offices as well as friends who have been through it. Don't be afraid to ask to be trained on a new task. That looks good as well. Don't get stuck with all grunt work. You will stay there for years!!
I think there is also another side to the pain here. In my experience, places that love to promote slacker chads in a consistent way, the kind of chads that if they built a chair, they told everyone, claimed it could fly, and the second after they leave the room the chair is found out to be made out of cotton wool and does not and never did work, those kind of places that promote those kinds of chads make us, and especially women, work so much harder because we believe that if we will work harder, and smarter and better they will see we are good. From my experience, places that promote those kind of chad, do it almost exclusively, and no matter how well we work , how much we achieve, we will not be promoted, if a company has only promoted chads, leave, stop working hard, stop working smart, and just work on updating your CV because nothing else would work.
You have been paying attention 👏👏👏 I do think there are ways to play with Chad's rule and win in many places, but that is l depends on if the rise of the Chad was by accident or intent.

I know this for sure. I have been at my job for 10 years and have seen people move up within the months. It is all about social skills. You can know 100% of job and the company will keep you there for that reason. They don't want to replace you. They will take a person who has been there less time and move them up into a position that is needed.
As a former hard worker, I made a decision when I went back to finish my bachelor's degree in my early 30s. I read several career books. They are absolutely morphing me into a slacker Chad. The people who need to know me, know me. I do my work and hit my targets. My boss, and those 2 levels higher I speak to on a quarterly basis. It's so much nicer on this side guys..
I started my own business and made one discovery. Being VERY GOOD at what you do is one of the reasons you will NEVER get promoted. 1 a business owner doesnt want to promote someone out of a production position. If you are the best ditch digger at "bobs ditches" promoting you to a air conditioned management role means being replaced by someone less profitable. 2. In a large corporation people do not want to promote someone who one day may be their replacement or competition for advancement. A manager never wants to expose the true talent above himself and instead will promote someone they can control without the risk of being shown up. And 3. Often time in d*verse environments employers find it frustrating letting go of candidates that could bring a suit later. Its much easier to promote a flunking employee to some phony supervisor position instead of letting them sink production leaving them there or letting them go and coming back with a public civil suit.
I know I'm late to the video, but I wanted to share a piece of knowledge. Sometimes what we think is someone being lazy is actually them putting their energy into the correct priorities--while we are not. I think it can feel inequitable when a coworker isn't doing busy work or what we feel is their fair share. But as you say here, it's important to take a step back and ask ourselves if the work we want them to do is actually important or necessary!
Yes, but... One reality of Corporate America is that teams have been pared-down to the bare minimum. There is only enough staff to [just barely] get the work done. If anyone reading this is in IT and is part of a "DevOps" team. Chad will spend all his time on only those things that make him look good to his boss, and his boss's boss, etc. The rest of the team, who may not have the boss's ear are held accountable when all that unimportant and meaningless work is not done. Often times because Chad simply lacks the skills to do it. Stated another way, if everyone focuses only on that high-visibility work, who does the critical but decidedly mundane work that absolutely must get done, but is only noticed when not completed?

I always worked hard, never sick, cross trained others, was there to cover for my boss. He one day told me the reason company doesn't promote people like me is because I'm more of value doing day to day work than delegating to others. Don't matter if you have a degree or not. If you can mop 40 flights of stairs in 2 hours is more valuable than your finance or accounting skills.
There's a lot of these "slacker chads" where I use to work at, and yes it's true, they spend more time under the boss's desk than they do actually working.
There is also slacker Sally who knows how to social engineer their way up the ranks by getting everyone to like her, help her, and often do her work for her. They do this by finessing people into doing small favors that then build up to serve her as a de facto subordinate. Then when all these "favors" stack up into big things getting done they are then able to show how good they are a "delegating" and "leveraging resources". From there she's put into management where she has a whole team dedicated to doing her bidding while she just sends emails that say "go, team". From there she just needs to rinse and repeat the charm offensive all the way into the E-suite and never needs to be competent in any specific task or subject so long as she has someone she can tap to do it for her.

Spark up lunch with management(Not your supervisor). The closer they feel to you and you can pass your supervisor for a better position. If you're a supervisor then even easier.
You described this so eloquently! This is what I went through while I was on Active Duty military! So glad to be retired now with pensions! I got tired of going above and beyond and being overlooked for the next rank! But this video is so true!
These slackers are everywhere and their success is basically at your detriment. I say, slack off yourself and bring the wheels to a grinding halt: let Chad spout off about meeting impossible deadlines while holding yourself and others to do-able timelines. When/if berated to fall in line, ask (sweetly) for leadership. When it's not forthcoming, stick to your projected goals and provide proof via (interdepartment emails usually) demonstrating your requests for help/guidance. Chad stands alone, his boss gets tired of him and you continue to be valuable as a human asset.
Problem is if you can’t get the job done and from slacker chad up they think it’s a reasonable deadline… it doesn’t matter. Slacker chad delegates and you complete tasks. Chad doesn’t complete tasks. You don’t get to hold yourself to a different timeline lol. That’s you ignoring chain of command. Asking for help also makes you look like you can’t complete the task or do your job adequately. This is risky and I’ve seen this very thing back fire, mainly because most management are ALL chads.

You have to be smarter and say it is too much or they need to delegate it better or that your skills are xxx and you need more support, etc. Then slacker Chad looks like they can't manage (be ause they really can't they rely on the harder workers to make them look good despite their incompetence)

You are an employee number, whether you work hard or not, you are easily replaceable. If you are someone that management can unload their tasks on, you will get promoted but keep in mind you are handling your load and some of their load. Some managers will load as much of their work on you they can, till you fail that way they have a reason not to promote you more. You are just a number the moment you realize that and act accordingly then your job becomes easier.
I'm now Slacker Chad with a team of 7 reporting into me. I was formerly the diligently hard worker taking everything on and putting in 11 hour days. The lessons here are spot on. It's just a shame that it took me 15 years to learn them (prior to seeing this video).
My father is named Chad and he can’t get promoted because they are too afraid of not being able to find somebody to replace him in the field because he is FANTASTIC at what he does. But the scary part? He is going to be the best at what he would be promoted to. They lose so much more by not promoting him.
I worked at a savers thrift store years ago. I was the top employee with the most customer compliments , led the store in the district with the most customer club member sign ups , and even received numerous praises from corporate. However , the store manager( A complete dud) kept on passing me over for the supervisor position and kept giving the opportunity to be a supervisor to my other co workers despite they would constantly call out , do little of the work , and got showered with complaints from regular shoppers. When another supervisor position became available i talked to him about giving me an opportunity and his response was always " You're not quite there yet to become supervisor "And the biggest middle finger to me was when the manager started off the new employee( who also was lazy and did little of the work) at " 3 DOLLARS" more an hour than me. Of course i was heartbroken and fed up over these major blows. However fast forward 3 months later when i went to shop there and the store manager and those he gave an shot to plus the new guy and i kid you not....all got "FIRED" with new a store manager and new employees and supervisors running things so i guess you can say karma was a b--h.
because your boss has someone who will give perfect work, he doesnt have to review or correct it. by promoting you, he is risking getting a new person that he will have to train.

I have worked with so many Slacker Chads. I used to hate it when they hired men in the office. They NEVER wanted to work. They would come in extra early & do nothing until the 8am people came in & then they'd go home at 3.
As the hard worker who has been over looked for promotions instead of slacker Chad and not understood why this has happened this has been really helpful. The vomit in my mouth comment is a perfect analogy and I have felt like this many times as I have watched slacker Chad move up the ladder.
Yeah Slacker "Rat" Chads are great brown nosers. I've been stepped on by alot of these types because of my strong work ethic, and honesty. Too much of a threat to their jobs.
As someone who was the hardest worker turned smartest worker, I got promoted as soon as I started working smarter not harder. Went from working 50+ hours a week to under 40 hours a week with a pay & title bump.
I wish it worked that way. I worked smarter from the beginning and it disnt matter, just made the manager look like geniuses for meeting deadline faster....

I think too hard workers are tough to lose for a leader.. be it that they do volume or they take some of the peer to peer stuff off the leader's workload. This is where my career has stalled presently.
I had several slacker Chad moments. You do the work that makes you get noticed and they tend to like you more. Being with the same company for 18 yrs and just being promoted to D.A. recently just had my resume bumped up too.

Start playing golf. All of the "Chads" I've know will find a personal connection to their supervisors. They're highly skilled emotional manipulators who know how to tap into their boss's favorite things, hobbies, insecurities, and interests. They get the boss alone on a regular basis and plead their case. That's how they really get promoted and keep their jobs, IMHO.
In conclusion my skills are needed elsewhere they can keep their dog and pony show and see how well showgirl chad can market without ever meeting any real production standards.
If people always reliable, never missing a shift, works so hard, I will consider them as a hard worker, not a leader, a raise for them, but not promotion

But sadly, Most of Bosses only cares about how to make their life easier, Most Bosses will just keep the good worker where they are so they can have less stress themself, When I used to work for a club, there's a busser worked so hard and always reliable, he talked to his Boss he wanted to become a server, his Boss declined him, another time I heard his Boss talk about this: " He's a great Busser, I need him to doing his job at his spot, If I promoted him, I will have to hire another reliable person like him to do his job, is going to be hard to find someone like that." I had a situation myself where I only had a couple of years left before I could get an actual pension so I just put up with retaliation for something and resultant micromanagement but left immediately when those two years were up and immediately and literally the next workday started another job paying $20,000 more! If the aforementioned busser quit, that boss who refused to give him a chance at being a server was still reduced to the situation he did not want which was having to find a replacement. So maybe he should have given the busser a chance.
You are wrong. Higher ups generally are good at spotting who works and who doesn’t. They intentionally don’t promote more intelligent and hardworking people because they threaten higher up’s jobs. No intelligent person gets promoted as they are threat to others’ jobs. They are hated by their peers as well. You should definitely make a separate video abt this. So many people don’t know this basic thing..

If an individual isn't figuring out what's important to the people important to their advancement and focusing on those things, making sure the important people know who they are and what they do, and networking they're just flat out doing it wrong. I think when we operate under the mythology of a meritocracy, it's easy to fall trap to the adages we're given and are reinforced by many big voice: work hard (lots of hours), and bring your A game to everything you do. But you're right ... Once you *know it* you know it, and can't see how anyone doesn't follow these rules. They're powerful and save so much time and stress
I find that in most organizations, especially healthcare, that the most incompetent, incapable, inept people get promoted. All you need is a bigger Degree or a Special Certification and it matters not if the person can actually do the job. They just look great on paper. My brother who is older than me and from an earlier era, did not have a College degree but he knew retail and he opened and ran dozens of Million Dollar stores for Payless Shoes until he was told by the District Managers that he was not “qualified” to open and run Million dollar stores because he did not have a Degree.

Back in my recruiting days I worked with one engineering manager who would only hire what he called 'lazy coders'. His perspective was they would get the most done with the fewest lines of code which made life easier for maintenance, troubleshooting and upgrades.

This is literally me, and yes, it works. I keep getting promoted against my will. I now have subordinates and a company truck, which makes my life even easier.
I currently work with a few very lazy coworkers but that just encourages me to work my ass off even harder to show them up. In my experience every single hard working go-getter has always gotten really good promotions, and I’ve even noticed this for me personally. I suspect that the types that whimsically throw around the “slacker Chad” epithet are probably not good workers themselves but they highly overestimate their own abilities and value to their company.
I worked with one slacker chad a while ago. I remember I had many problems with my boss, she observed anything I did (a worked like an idiot even on weekends and holidays), but this chad even lied about absences and in his cv and this boss overlooked everything. Of couse he got a better job and left. (even with little experience he became manager). A while ago I found out that he made some decisions that caused his new company to lose a lot of money and got him fired. Now he got a new, very well-paying job again.
We need to make a small effort for how great Chad is with "promoting himself/herself"! It's necessary a great will to put yourself in the center of everything and still avoid being "the one who you always" talks about! Now, let me tell a simple experience. In the end of this year I was being interviewed for one company that was my long dream of career. They had one job, but it was half of what I wanted, I said no, but in my interview "I've been a rocket"!. Became friend with the Coordinator and even with the associate of the place, discussed some ideas, and what I could already do in the place, etc. One week later, the person that occupied the position that I wanted left, they called me immediately. Offered me the same job, double salary and 10 hours less. So, never forget, be like Chad!

At my office that is called being the bus driver and tossing people under it as you move forward. They get beat down and left behind. People are terrified of the bus driver and are fake friends to stay in their safety zone. This means know your place. I'm the bookkeeper. No one else does my job: AR, AP, PR, quarterly taxes, and the dreadful daily books. I take 1 day off and I'm 3 days behind. Meanwhile, the bus driver is literally on Pinterest and earning a bonus. For what? I would love to know.
I worked retail since I was 16. I always did my best to the point where I was working so hard even picking up the slack of other employees because the customers were important to me, not at just 1 job but all of them. I finally realized nothing that i ever did got me anywhere even a promotion. I got tired of doing other ppls jobs and now I am in a job I love and people actually appreciate what I do so what I've learned is when I got out of retail my life and pay got better and I do not over work unless the job is upholding the other end of things like pay, promotions etc. It is sad but the honest truth is if its not worth your time do not put in the work.

I was working in a huge company that had a budget for each team to have a paid day with a budget for each person to do team activities.
So I asked my boss if we are planning anything and she said that she hasn't but if I wanted to I can plan it and she will go along, I told her I really want a paid day not working (yes I actually told her and told everyone repeatedly throughout this story) anyway, I really wanted a break, so I found enough discounts and activities that cover a day so I don't have to work for a day but still be paid (and remember, telling people this all the time, not only not hiding it, just telling them) the other two teams in the department asked if they can join, I said sure (more people, more fun, more discounts, less work time)
So I organized it for the department , I got the company to pay for all of us to go bowling, eat in a restaurant, and go to a 3d movie just because I wanted a day not working (and again, I can not stress this enough, I was very honest and blunt about it)
Anyway, it was a really fun day, a week after I get a notification that I got a small reward, I asked my boss what for, and she said for showing team spirit and organising this day, I again reminded her that I was really just slacking off and getting the company to pay for it, she said it was still team spirit yada yada I got about 50$ in vouchers...
So... To your question, yes I have worked with many slacker chads, and for a day and a half I was one

For me as a manager it's actually annoying. I set objectives and I don't care to be cc'd in all the emails and incited to all the meetings you have to accomplish those. We meet monthly to discuss progress, you can talk to me about challenges otherwise I just think you can't handle your work.
BUT I have realized that my own managers want to see YOU more than they want to see what you DO. So lesson learnt.

0:35 As a software engineer, I naively ensured our releases were bug free as I'd find problematic issues and fix them before they even make it live. The problem was that no one knows I was doing this. Other people were getting credit for "a great release". What I did was let those issues surface at prime time and let them panic, then I'd offer to fix it since I noticed the problem way earlier and just push out a fix in a timely matter. Not only do I make myself look good, but I make my those who were previously getting credit look bad. It was win-win!
This happens a lot in software engineering. If you let the fire happen and then offer to put out the fire in a timely matter you get noticed. But prevent the fire from ever happening? Crickets.
I got fired because i was doing right my job, all my modules in my software were realeased w/o bugs but one week later i got fired and they said i wasn't doing my job as the other developers that "work" all day fixing their own bugs FML.

In the Air Force, I had a civilian boss tell me on a trip to headquarters while drunk at dinner that she puts low-caliber people in for promotion so that they won't be competitive with her when it's time for her to promote up. That's really great, and we wonder why the govt. is so jacked up. I'm sure a lot of people in companies do that, too.

I've heard the same from someone very senior. It's only natural to want to protect your position. The only remedy is that recruitment decisions should not be left to a manager, but to the manager's manager. Sadly this rarely happens and hence the good candidates are often rejected. On the other hand managers rarely see contractors as a threat, though even then it can happen.. It's one reason I've avoided going permanent for a very long tine, that and the higher rates given to contractors.

I'm a "hard worker" and this is textbook what happens in the workplace. Honestly, it's extremely difficult but I'm trying to move away from this mindset and build more efficiencies to save my time/sanity. In my next role, I'm taking the "Slacker Chad" value with me. I'm learning to ask what are the key deliverables for the business and work on these. "Hard work" leads to nothing but burnout and resentment.

The problem with being Chad is that the higher up you go, the closer ane closer you become to being exposed. Charm, charisma and likeability will help you rise the ranks, but without the foundations of skill and competency, eventually there will be nowhere to hide, because once you're at the top, you are on your own. You then just have to hope that your subordinates don't get frustrated and stop covering for you. As 50 cent once said, "Who you know will put you on... what you know will keep you there."
I don’t even care anymore about my coworkers trying to sabotage me. I already got turned down two promotions because of these people. If I change to conform, I feel like I’m not being real with myself. I don’t even care if I get fired or whatever happens to me, I know that anything I lose in life was because it wasn’t meant for me and something greater will come my way. I’m not going to change my work ethic for anyone. I like to work hard and I like to learn. I’m glad I’m getting experience for whatever I do in the future regardless of where I’m at.

It doesn't matter how hard you work at your job, it doesn't matter how good you are at your job, it doesn't matter how much money you've made for the company or how many customers you've brought in and retained for the company. Everything comes down to likeability. Lazy people are LAZY, but they are also laid-back, funny, don't take themselves too seriously and easy to get along with, and a lot of them have endearing personalities. Your boss is going to overlook your job performance and your valuabe assets over that. It's not fair, it's not right, but it's true.

My team had to interact with that Lazy Chad and I... arranged for Lazy Chad portfolio to shift to one that didn't overlap with my team's and therefore Lazy Chad couldn't rely on them to do this work. He got exposed and got demoted within a year.

15 years fed gov you learn a lot of psychology the biggest problem with the gov is people are not paid to produce anything so it all turns into a game the few people who do have a functioning job are managed by a top heavy management so basically everybody is just trying to play the game to jump to the next level. I was a construction worker prior grew up on a farm and was in the military when I got into a gov job I was somewhat scared thinking I would not be good enough for the agency boy was I wrong almost all the the people I worked with didn't do anything and I grew upset with them and wondered why they didn't work, well over the process of 15 years I figured out why they didn't care, your not rewarded for a work ethic your rewarded if you play the game they set, it seems like most of the people welling to play this game I would not want to hire in the private construction sector. Its really sad, kills the soul if you have a work ethic. Ive come to the point I just treat the job as a pay check and health insurance and have my own side investments and business on the Side doing construction work. The video is spot on

I was once managed by a guy like this, and although I’m not in the lazy-camp, I actually learned a lot on how to get promoted in my industry. I’ve learned to merge hard work with smart work… that way I don’t feel dead inside when making these moves. Overall, It’s sad but it’s literally the lay of the land.

My male boss fired me because due to gall bladder surgery on Thursday & I was back on Monday. He had just given another co-worker 6 weeks of paid leave to have her gall bladder surgery & it embarrassed him as everyone knew I had asked for a week off & was told I could have 3 unpaid days leave....lol After he fired me the old boss called & called & texted & emailed me for info & passwords which I had put together for the new person & he threw all in the trash to insult me on my last day.....BIG mistake. I never read nor listened to any of his communication after I left. I blocked him on my phone to stop the crap. I don't work there anymore....lol...lol He was fired within a month of his firing me because he didn't know jack sh*t & I knew he was going to get wacked....lol That was a good life lesson for him as we learn from our mistakes!
I was asked by my leader to help a trainer prepare for a class. I showed her a flaw in a workflow and my fix. The trainer said "let's bring this to a workgroup, I'll invite you". Several weeks later an email goes out that she brought it and got it updated etc, never said one word about swiping it from me. I did have proof of my showing her but my leader didn't care to address it
That's super annoying. If it's something big and promotable that when it's worth staking credit. And now you know you have a Rachel in the Trainer so you can navigate future dealings with her.

@Ashka Shah that video was really about taking credit for your own work instead of handing credit over to people who contributed. Owning your awesomeness is really important. Too many people are happily sharing credit, only to have the Chads and the Averys of the world overstate their contributions and take over as the main character in the accomplishment instead of a supporting or contributing player.

Slacker chad here, this is good advice. Take note of what metrics your superios send reminders of on a daily basis, excel at those and learn to fly under the radar for everything else. Remember to be loud and proud when you do well.

Yup! Hard work alone will get you overlooked if not held back. It is just a fact in the work place. They don't care who does the grunt work or how hard it is as long as it gets done. I saw a book about managers that actually admitted that some will never have the work ethic as others & it encouraged managers to just keep off loading the work on those willing to do more than their share & just let the others keep skating by. It said something like "you can't change personalities..." . Managers want to look good to those above them & they will promote a backslapper in a heartbeat while holding back their hardest worker. It's very common from what I've seen in offices as well as friends who have been through it. Don't be afraid to ask to be trained on a new task. That looks good as well. Don't get stuck with all grunt work. You will stay there for years!!

I think there is also another side to the pain here.
In my experience, places that love to promote slacker chads in a consistent way, the kind of chads that if they built a chair, they told everyone, claimed it could fly, and the second after they leave the room the chair is found out to be made out of cotton wool and does not and never did work, those kind of places that promote those kinds of chads make us, and especially women, work so much harder because we believe that if we will work harder, and smarter and better they will see we are good.
From my experience, places that promote those kind of chad, do it almost exclusively, and no matter how well we work , how much we achieve, we will not be promoted, if a company has only promoted chads, leave, stop working hard, stop working smart, and just work on updating your CV because nothing else would work.

I do think there are ways to play with Chad's rule and win in many places, but that is l depends on if the rise of the Chad was by accident or intent.

I know this for sure. I have been at my job for 10 years and have seen people move up within the months. It is all about social skills. You can know 100% of job and the company will keep you there for that reason. They don't want to replace you. They will take a person who has been there less time and move them up into a position that is needed.
As a former hard worker, I made a decision when I went back to finish my bachelor's degree in my early 30s. I read several career books. They are absolutely morphing me into a slacker Chad. The people who need to know me, know me. I do my work and hit my targets. My boss, and those 2 levels higher I speak to on a quarterly basis. It's so much nicer on this side guys..

I started my own business and made one discovery. Being VERY GOOD at what you do is one of the reasons you will NEVER get promoted. 1 a business owner doesnt want to promote someone out of a production position. If you are the best ditch digger at "bobs ditches" promoting you to a air conditioned management role means being replaced by someone less profitable. 2. In a large corporation people do not want to promote someone who one day may be their replacement or competition for advancement. A manager never wants to expose the true talent above himself and instead will promote someone they can control without the risk of being shown up. And 3. Often time in d*verse environments employers find it frustrating letting go of candidates that could bring a suit later. Its much easier to promote a flunking employee to some phony supervisor position instead of letting them sink production leaving them there or letting them go and coming back with a public civil suit.

I know I'm late to the video, but I wanted to share a piece of knowledge. Sometimes what we think is someone being lazy is actually them putting their energy into the correct priorities--while we are not. I think it can feel inequitable when a coworker isn't doing busy work or what we feel is their fair share. But as you say here, it's important to take a step back and ask ourselves if the work we want them to do is actually important or necessary!

One reality of Corporate America is that teams have been pared-down to the bare minimum. There is only enough staff to [just barely] get the work done. If anyone reading this is in IT and is part of a "DevOps" team. Chad will spend all his time on only those things that make him look good to his boss, and his boss's boss, etc. The rest of the team, who may not have the boss's ear are held accountable when all that unimportant and meaningless work is not done. Often times because Chad simply lacks the skills to do it.
Stated another way, if everyone focuses only on that high-visibility work, who does the critical but decidedly mundane work that absolutely must get done, but is only noticed when not completed?
Nah they are actually lazy. I'm not going to polish them into some kind of noble and true character.

I always worked hard, never sick, cross trained others, was there to cover for my boss. He one day told me the reason company doesn't promote people like me is because I'm more of value doing day to day work than delegating to others. Don't matter if you have a degree or not. If you can mop 40 flights of stairs in 2 hours is more valuable than your finance or accounting skills.

There's a lot of these "slacker chads" where I use to work at, and yes it's true, they spend more time under the boss's desk than they do actually working.
There is also slacker Sally who knows how to social engineer their way up the ranks by getting everyone to like her, help her, and often do her work for her. They do this by finessing people into doing small favors that then build up to serve her as a de facto subordinate. Then when all these "favors" stack up into big things getting done they are then able to show how good they are a "delegating" and "leveraging resources". From there she's put into management where she has a whole team dedicated to doing her bidding while she just sends emails that say "go, team". From there she just needs to rinse and repeat the charm offensive all the way into the E-suite and never needs to be competent in any specific task or subject so long as she has someone she can tap to do it for her.

I've just met one at my new place! I've decided to approach them with curiosity and set immediate boundaries with them and their 'requests for help'.

Spark up lunch with management(Not your supervisor). The closer they feel to you and you can pass your supervisor for a better position. If you're a supervisor then even easier.

These slackers are everywhere and their success is basically at your detriment. I say, slack off yourself and bring the wheels to a grinding halt: let Chad spout off about meeting impossible deadlines while holding yourself and others to do-able timelines. When/if berated to fall in line, ask (sweetly) for leadership. When it's not forthcoming, stick to your projected goals and provide proof via (interdepartment emails usually) demonstrating your requests for help/guidance. Chad stands alone, his boss gets tired of him and you continue to be valuable as a human asset.

Problem is if you can’t get the job done and from slacker chad up they think it’s a reasonable deadline… it doesn’t matter. Slacker chad delegates and you complete tasks. Chad doesn’t complete tasks. You don’t get to hold yourself to a different timeline lol. That’s you ignoring chain of command. Asking for help also makes you look like you can’t complete the task or do your job adequately. This is risky and I’ve seen this very thing back fire, mainly because most management are ALL chads.

These jobs really are a popularity contest. I seen it multiple times from experience.
You are an employee number, whether you work hard or not, you are easily replaceable. If you are someone that management can unload their tasks on, you will get promoted but keep in mind you are handling your load and some of their load. Some managers will load as much of their work on you they can, till you fail that way they have a reason not to promote you more. You are just a number the moment you realize that and act accordingly then your job becomes easier.
I'm now Slacker Chad with a team of 7 reporting into me. I was formerly the diligently hard worker taking everything on and putting in 11 hour days.
The lessons here are spot on. It's just a shame that it took me 15 years to learn them (prior to seeing this video).

My father is named Chad and he can’t get promoted because they are too afraid of not being able to find somebody to replace him in the field because he is FANTASTIC at what he does. But the scary part? He is going to be the best at what he would be promoted to. They lose so much more by not promoting him.

I worked at a savers thrift store years ago. I was the top employee with the most customer compliments , led the store in the district with the most customer club member sign ups , and even received numerous praises from corporate. However , the store manager( A complete dud) kept on passing me over for the supervisor position and kept giving the opportunity to be a supervisor to my other co workers despite they would constantly call out , do little of the work , and got showered with complaints from regular shoppers. When another supervisor position became available i talked to him about giving me an opportunity and his response was always " You're not quite there yet to become supervisor "And the biggest middle finger to me was when the manager started off the new employee( who also was lazy and did little of the work) at " 3 DOLLARS" more an hour than me. Of course i was heartbroken and fed up over these major blows. However fast forward 3 months later when i went to shop there and the store manager and those he gave an shot to plus the new guy and i kid you not....all got "FIRED" with new a store manager and new employees and supervisors running things so i guess you can say karma was a b--h.

@@zarakareem4716 Exactly. It’s the “Don’t be irreplaceable, because by being irreplaceable, you can’t get promoted” deal. Too valuable where you are. Of course, in that case, there’s always the threat of leaving (and make it a legit threat) and getting “promoted” that way.
If you do things too well they won't want to promote you because to find someone else who can do a good job as you will be highly unlikely.

I have worked with so many Slacker Chads. I used to hate it when they hired men in the office. They NEVER wanted to work. They would come in extra early & do nothing until the 8am people came in & then they'd go home at 3.
As the hard worker who has been over looked for promotions instead of slacker Chad and not understood why this has happened this has been really helpful.
The vomit in my mouth comment is a perfect analogy and I have felt like this many times as I have watched slacker Chad move up the ladder.

I had several slacker Chad moments. You do the work that makes you get noticed and they tend to like you more. Being with the same company for 18 yrs and just being promoted to D.A. recently just had my resume bumped up too.

People have to learn how to tell their stories. Chad has learned the value of visibility and probably networks really well.
Start playing golf. All of the "Chads" I've know will find a personal connection to their supervisors. They're highly skilled emotional manipulators who know how to tap into their boss's favorite things, hobbies, insecurities, and interests. They get the boss alone on a regular basis and plead their case. That's how they really get promoted and keep their jobs, IMHO.
People who toot their own horns should be recognized and called out.
In conclusion my skills are needed elsewhere they can keep their dog and pony show and see how well showgirl chad can market without ever meeting any real production standards.
If people always reliable, never missing a shift, works so hard, I will consider them as a hard worker, not a leader, a raise for them, but not promotion

But sadly, Most of Bosses only cares about how to make their life easier, Most Bosses will just keep the good worker where they are so they can have less stress themself, When I used to work for a club, there's a busser worked so hard and always reliable, he talked to his Boss he wanted to become a server, his Boss declined him, another time I heard his Boss talk about this: " He's a great Busser, I need him to doing his job at his spot, If I promoted him, I will have to hire another reliable person like him to do his job, is going to be hard to find someone like that." So he gave that Busser a raise, and today, that busser still working there as a busser. It's just so sad most Boss would think like that, however,If the Boss won't promote you, so better find a way to promote yourself. Life is so hard, and the reality is so cruel, because people today only cares about themselves.
@@michaelpf08 So then at that point, the worker does the only thing that is left, which is to quit if they at all can! I had a situation myself where I only had a couple of years left before I could get an actual pension so I just put up with retaliation for something and resultant micromanagement but left immediately when those two years were up and immediately and literally the next workday started another job paying $20,000 more! If the aforementioned busser quit, that boss who refused to give him a chance at being a server was still reduced to the situation he did not want which was having to find a replacement. So maybe he should have given the busser a chance.

You are wrong. Higher ups generally are good at spotting who works and who doesn’t. They intentionally don’t promote more intelligent and hardworking people because they threaten higher up’s jobs. No intelligent person gets promoted as they are threat to others’ jobs. They are hated by their peers as well. You should definitely make a separate video abt this. So many people don’t know this basic thing..
Really not wrong here... this is research backed. That said, being too good to promote is a phenomenon that I know a lot of high achievers (i.e. people around here) deal with, I'll be digging into it and how to overcome it in a video soon!

If an individual isn't figuring out what's important to the people important to their advancement and focusing on those things, making sure the important people know who they are and what they do, and networking they're just flat out doing it wrong. Those behaviors are the definition of working smarter not harder.
I think when we operate under the mythology of a meritocracy, it's easy to fall trap to the adages we're given and are reinforced by many big voice: work hard (lots of hours), and bring your A game to everything you do. But you're right ... Once you *know it* you know it, and can't see how anyone doesn't follow these rules. They're powerful and save so much time and stress
I find that in most organizations, especially healthcare, that the most incompetent, incapable, inept people get promoted. All you need is a bigger Degree or a Special Certification and it matters not if the person can actually do the job. They just look great on paper. My brother who is older than me and from an earlier era, did not have a College degree but he knew retail and he opened and ran dozens of Million Dollar stores for Payless Shoes until he was told by the District Managers that he was not “qualified” to open and run Million dollar stores because he did not have a Degree.

Slacker Chads get ahead because they know how to charm the managers and bosses. They use sweet words and put on a mask of knowing what they’re doing well to gain everyone’s favour.
A German general once opined, "A smart, hardworking officer makes a good staff officer. But it is the smart, lazy officer that should be made a line officer, because he will find the most efficient way to get things done."
Back in my recruiting days I worked with one engineering manager who would only hire what he called 'lazy coders'. His perspective was they would get the most done with the fewest lines of code which made life easier for maintenance, troubleshooting and upgrades.

You've described the very type of person I've always had problems with at work. I've known for years that you don't get to keep your job by doing it right, but by having your boss like you. It's so corrupt.
It's all about consistency and and being aloof. People know I make it look easy, so when bosses come we never talk about work. We just have fun 👍.
This is literally me, and yes, it works. I keep getting promoted against my will. I now have subordinates and a company truck, which makes my life even easier.
I currently work with a few very lazy coworkers but that just encourages me to work my ass off even harder to show them up. In my experience every single hard working go-getter has always gotten really good promotions, and I’ve even noticed this for me personally. I suspect that the types that whimsically throw around the “slacker Chad” epithet are probably not good workers themselves but they highly overestimate their own abilities and value to their company.

I worked with one slacker chad a while ago. I remember I had many problems with my boss, she observed anything I did (a worked like an idiot even on weekends and holidays), but this chad even lied about absences and in his cv and this boss overlooked everything. Of couse he got a better job and left. (even with little experience he became manager). A while ago I found out that he made some decisions that caused his new company to lose a lot of money and got him fired. Now he got a new, very well-paying job again.

We need to make a small effort for how great Chad is with "promoting himself/herself"! It's necessary a great will to put yourself in the center of everything and still avoid being "the one who you always" talks about! Now, let me tell a simple experience. In the end of this year I was being interviewed for one company that was my long dream of career. They had one job, but it was half of what I wanted, I said no, but in my interview "I've been a rocket"!. Became friend with the Coordinator and even with the associate of the place, discussed some ideas, and what I could already do in the place, etc. One week later, the person that occupied the position that I wanted left, they called me immediately. Offered me the same job, double salary and 10 hours less. So, never forget, be like Chad!

At my office that is called being the bus driver and tossing people under it as you move forward. They get beat down and left behind. People are terrified of the bus driver and are fake friends to stay in their safety zone. This means know your place. I'm the bookkeeper. No one else does my job: AR, AP, PR, quarterly taxes, and the dreadful daily books. I take 1 day off and I'm 3 days behind. Meanwhile, the bus driver is literally on Pinterest and earning a bonus. For what? I would love to know.
I worked retail since I was 16. I always did my best to the point where I was working so hard even picking up the slack of other employees because the customers were important to me, not at just 1 job but all of them. I finally realized nothing that i ever did got me anywhere even a promotion. I got tired of doing other ppls jobs and now I am in a job I love and people actually appreciate what I do so what I've learned is when I got out of retail my life and pay got better and I do not over work unless the job is upholding the other end of things like pay, promotions etc. It is sad but the honest truth is if its not worth your time do not put in the work.
