People generally fear being perceived as stupid. Often, stupid people are looked down upon and laughed at. Society perceives stupid people as useless, as a burden rather than an asset. Hence, most of us try to prevent ourselves from appearing stupid in front of co-workers, fellow students, family members, and friends. And sometimes, we try to appear much smarter than we are just so people hold us in high esteem - just so people won’t think of us as stupid.

Growing up, you're taught that being liked by everyone is a plus. The older I get, the more I realize that as long as you hold yourself to high standards, it really doesn't matter what others think of you. I know a lot of people that fake it to be liked by everyone, instead of being honest and maybe losing a friend or two over their point of view. Id rather have people think im an idiot than people think Im smart and try to take a piece of me bc of that perception. All I want is to be left alone on my 30 acre property in the middle of nowhere, Colorado and write&record my music.
It is interesting that many people like losers more than winners because themselves are losers and they envy winners.
For 30+ years, I haven't given the slightest sheetz about what others have thought of me. Long story short, I'm an award-winning performer and author. Third book will launch over 2023's solstices. I get stuff DONE. 💪😎✌️ Objectives get identified, and I knock them off my lists. End of story. People can say whatever they like. It doesn't change the fact that they've accomplished almost NOTHING with their own existences on Earth, lol. And their wasted lives are none of my business anyhow. I have work to do, and absolutely nothing (except death) stands in my way. Zilch.

It's definitely hard for many though, because they're often surrounded by like minded people, and those minds are tampered with by mainstream media into idolizing the people who act like utter morons in society. Bad influence is everywhere unfortunately, and the young are the most susceptible to it.

I tried to act *stupid* long ago, still am. But they don't care if you're *stupid* or not. Some idiots beyond *stupidity* will never change thier argumentation habits. Being called dumb piece of s#$* getting sweared at for little to no reason, being messed with, and without any way to defend yourself because of your lack of self esteem and thier way of arguing to gaslight to the extremest of way. Even if you win an argument it doesn't change anything. Man, this life is suffocating.

Convincing ourselves to be smart is the ultimate way for us to stop learning and growing. If we all think of ourselves as stupid and use that as a base to advance, imagine how much happier and smarter (ironically) we all become

also if people perceived more and were braver than they are... they might seem more intelligent, but instead its just that they are using it more. also what makes you think its mostly genetic? didn't humans go from literally sticks and stones to splitting atoms?
are you saying that to survive we must birth more babies by any means possible to progress? because genius is genetic? I have to disagree personally [except for birth more people part, we need that... declining birth rate and such] because for many people one man's stupid is another man's smart (and this gets back to perception and fishes in trees... oh and Einstein.)
also is 'Bernard Shaw' the only one who can prove this idea that genius is genetic? who else can you pull up and what were their methods? because I personally believe that genius is a procedure and journey, not a destination. [mostly because others saw me as dumb when I was in school... I got mostly A's in school and study like a mad man. EDIT: for context I was about to be put into special ed, got home-schooled, got a love for learning, and returned to public school for resources and talking to others. I Still was intelligent because I learned more and more, not because I was predisposed to it.]

also I was stating with the fish and trees statement that Einstein stated fish don't belong in trees, monkeys do, while fish belong in the water. referring to the fact that there are different intelligences and also that some may be predisposed to certain fields of study [stem or art and music] because of nature and nurture affecting their path.
all I was asking for was a way to better understand your statement and give a polite rebuttal to your perceived argument and you throw seemingly an insult, honestly that might be more a determination of your intelligence than mine, but not the point here.

I switched jobs this year. I have taken the stupid pill. The more knowledgeable I am, the more expectations and responsibilities my employer puts on me. After six years of that, I quit that job. On my new job, I just pretend that I’m just smart enough to get by. I refuse to keep working like a dog while others take the credit for me working like I’m able to get more than a 3% raise at the end of the year. I turned 54 years old this year and I’m so angry that this light bulb just clicked on.
A question from a random young person:
Why didn't you negociate a higher rise earlier, not at the end of the year, if you're such a valuable asset to the company?
Or was it the work environment in general? Can I ask what did you work as?
So true! The issue with being perceived as a smart and intelligent person is everyone expects a lot of you and entrusts you with additional responsible. What makes you truly smart is to understand whether you want to do something or you've been manipulated into thinking that you want to do that. Give it a thought; it's not a mere wordplay.
@@rchaelk2319 as you get older, you will acquire more exposure as an employee working for different types of companies, and under different type of leaderships. If you have good work ethics, and you’re surrounded by lazy people, the probability of your employer, asking you to do things that they can’t get anybody else to do is very likely if they have poor leadership skills. If you’re more efficient and effective chances are you’ll be asked to take on extra responsibilities. Sometimes you’re so busy working hard you’re really not paying attention to how less other people are doing. One day you find yourself fed up and burned out then you stop and start looking around and come to the realization that you’re getting all the bull sh!t assignments. I worked in the medical field at a trauma one hospital. I’m moved on to another hospital. When it comes to negotiating money, that’s what you do prior to being hired. Once you’re hired, you get a certain percentage annually based on a point system evaluation. You can get more money by acquiring more certifications or degrees. You can advance to a different higher paying position at the same company which can result in a pay increase if a position is open and you’re accepted. There is nothing to negotiate. My new employer and coworkers have no Idea that I can do twice as much work and they NEVER will. I’m truly living my best life. I couldn’t pull that off at my old job because they already knew that I work like a warrior.
I am lucky to see this kind of stuff at an age where I'm not even able to start work yet.

As an engineering student, I became known in my university as that guy Said who asks the questions everyone has. This was a result of me asking questions about whatever I don't get on the SPOT (within reason, other people are also paying for the lecture, I don't want to cause complet chaos). Anyways later on I decide to go to a party, there a lot of people came up to me thanking me by name (me not evening meeting them before) for asking the questions that they also had. This made realize although I am clueless, many other people are also clueless but they care to much about the picture they put.
Asking the right questions is a skill on its own. When something is unclear to me, I also struggle to formulate a question about it. So it's nice having someone in te lecture room with a clear enough picture to spot the gaps.

I ask stupid question on every lecture in my university. That sometimes gives me a slight advantage on the exams (not only cuz I know more, but also cuz I get respected by the professors for asking dumb questions).

Never underestimate the apprentice’s ability to mess things up. Engineers with 15 years experience have stood scratching their heads asking themselves “ how the hell did he manage to do that?”😂
Don't forget that sometimes, a rookie mistake can solve a problem or provide a different perspective.
Some procedures get grandfathered in for so long and everyone knows and follows the procedure that they don't question it anymore. But the intern comes in and asks why don't we use this new material or new technique which renders the old procedure obsolete. For example, smartphones threw a lot of my company's procedures for a loop.

That’s awesome, I’m glad that it helped you find acceptance within yourself. It really feels like this video was made for me because I always feel like an idiot everyday, I have ADHD, Dyscalculia and am on the spectrum, I grew up being a special ed kid, I struggle with math, I have slow processing speed and have trouble keeping track of my belongings because I’m extremely forgetful. I find it hard to accept myself but watching this vid did help.
being strategic with stupidity is the way to avoid other stupid people from using you up, that's what I learned from working for someone else and it helps immensely with your mental health.

True, i have appeared Useless and dumb before and it makes people do stuff for me. They will insult your incompetence but they still do the job for you. You can't use it to much tho cause then people will just get really pissed at you.
It's the old "dumb blond" routine. They're not dumb, but they let others think they are dumb and helpless so others will do things for them. It's genius actually, as long as you don't push it too far - just as you said.
I hold 3 degrees. The most I ever learned was 4years teaching highschool kids how to do science. You learn new ways to interpret old concepts, but more importantly you also learn how to explain things in a way so simple even you can understand it.
Teachers teach students, but why can’t the opposite be true?

I have often become depressed because I was intelligent enough to see the fragility of our society....
Being smart enough to understand all the ways in which we are destroying nature and likely ourselves, along with it, really caused me a lot of suffering.
Now i'm over that.
Lately, I've been seeing the opposite in society.
Mostly it's been stupid people (though not exclusively) who have completely lost their minds over the pandemic and couldn't seem to live without fear and panic driving them to completely irrational perspectives and behaviors.
I don't know if it's the fear that made them stupid or they were just less visible before that, but the incredible willingness to just do whatever the mob said these past few years was surprising.
It's like we forgot our entire history, both of history and of science, and used shame and ridicule to attack each other rather than have intelligent discussions.
No longer was ignorance blissful in any way.
I think this is where intelligence actually really helped me, to see what was happening and being smart enough to live life on my own terms, despite what was happening culturally.
I've remained much happier because I was smart enough to know I shouldn't react strongly to these people and their insanity.
While i get many of the points these philosophers have made, we can't let stupidity run our society, lest we want to see it crumble.
We need people to care about being intellectuals and respectfully be able to discuss and debate without falling into the traps that stupid people do....

As the video said, there's a difference between acting stupid and being stupid. Judging people and their intelligence based on their actions due to real or perceived fear may be construed as an act of stupidity in and of itself.
Re: COVID, I'd understand if it's an irrational fear, but with hindsight being 20/20 and seeing the statistical & indiscriminate manner of which COVID killed or permanently scarred physiologically, I'd opine these fears were real. We don't know what we don't know, but we do know that these masked individuals are still alive continuing to be perceived as stupid while some who succumbed to the virus were also perceived as stupid. It's a winless situation.
I'd also opine that it's existing "fearlessly" in this world that blesses us with "Florida Man" or TMZ headlines, which is universally understood to be synonymous with the pinnacle of foolishness/stupidity.

In terms of self compassion, the idea that I didn't know any better at a given time in a given circumstance is quite a relief.
Some of us go through life as trial and error. My Mother has always told me that I'm not good enough and that is how I see myself. I'd rather not be liked and isolated, than be liked by those whom want something from me that I cannot give.

Since I did a professional IQ test and got the result of 88, I have weirdly felt more at peace with myself than ever. I feel that I have come so far and done so well despite being below-average intelligence.
Nah fam that IQ test must have been wrong, take the Menza sample test.
Nothing wrong with that. Theres a lot of higher iq individuals that are functionally useless. As long as you’re proud of your achievements IQ does not make it smaller.

Iq test are really not a good indicator of intelligence. First of all it is mostly concentrated around math and geometry. If one don't have an aptitude for those things, you will do poorly in any iq test. Plenty of savagely intelligent people who don't do math very well, but have an absurd aptitude in thinking in abstracts, which can be just as useful. Many of the great thinkers don't do math and many of the mathematicians don't do philosophy. Anyways, I am more pissed at, how we dunk people over the head with being a genius or a donkey from a single test that test one aspect of intelligence. It is, in fact pretty stupid.
It is all about finding what you are good at. We all have strengths and weaknesses.
sidenote; Since iq tests are primarily math and geometry oriented. You can learn to be better at them. Which again, seems a poor indicator for latent intelligence.
I work in academia. An important advice that I got too late is when you get offered your first administrative position, accept it an be as incompetent at it as possible; you can then practice the rest of your career in peace.

Your uncle is probably correct. One of the biggest problems with society is lying to every idiot making them think they are smart so as to not "hurt their feelings" with the truth.

Maybe it's a matter of definition, but most of these points seems to have more to do with acting stupid in a beneficial way rather than being unintelligent/mindless and unable to learn new things or learn from your past mistakes.

I want to point out that there are reasons other than public opinion that people may want to be entrusted difficult tasks.
Such goals might be learning, increasing their self-confidence, maintaining sharp skills, distracting themselves from unwelcome thoughts.

I relate to this. I was never academically proficient nor prominent. I just realized later on in life that people who worked so damn hard to get soaring status such as high flying colors deselects them from the huge potential of having to discover yourself and unleash creative genius. True wisdom teaches that an empty mind is the most receptive and curious, and that genius is never found nor developed in the academic circles. What is happening actually is status and power struggle, very similar to what happens in politics and culture. So, being 'stupid' or very ordinary is the key to truly overtake the knowledge and systems of this world.
The truth is quite different. Being stupid or appearing stupid has its benefits but it also has many disadvantages. People like high status people more and being smart increases the status while being stupid decreases the status and with that the possibilities to form friendship, get a date, make a deal, get a good job... Sometimes it is really more beneficial to look stupid but most of the time it is better to look smart.

@@chosenone8685 almost everything you have you got from someone in exchange for something he needed. It is beneficial if the exchange was good for you because he/she liked you.
I'd say it's generally better to appear slightly less intelligent than you are, so that you're more apt to impress people (if you want) rather than inevitably disappointing them.
@@RialuCaos it really depends on situation. If you want to impress a girl or want to get a high paying job you better impress them immediately. If you want to hide from responsibility or defeat an opponent that doesn't see you as a great threat it is better to appear rather dumb...
But we aren't even talking about being stupid. We are talking about how to approach people in order to make an impression that is beneficial to us. A stupid person wouldn't do that. He would act mindlessly and wouldn't learn from his mistakes.
Once you find out you're stupid or you've been stupid, you have to learn how to control your stupidity. That takes desire to do what is best and best is not always what you think, so be careful with how you go about finding out whats best and hope you have some people to support you with that.
There's a game called Nier Automata in the Machine Village where one of the machines is actually really smart, but he pretends to be stupid in order to get away with things. It really makes you think on how it's easier for a smart person to play dumb than a dumb person to play smart. Especially when it comes to fake smart people as oppose to genuinely smart people.

you don't have to play smart. dumb people just say whatever shit is on their mind, smart people find it stupid and ignore it - thus they get away with it. you get away with things by keeping it simple, not making it complicated!
It is, I think, safe to say that all of us suffer idiocy in one form or another. (For example, even Schopenhauer showed his idiocy and ignorance in his essay about women 😉) It is also safe to say that every person knows a thing or two better than anybody. Everyone has a story to tell and a story we could all learn from.
On another note, not all people want to be an oak tree. Others only dream of being a butterfly who lives for a time as a caterpillar before growing its wings - a short bittersweet but nonetheless fulfilling existence.

i also have ‘stupid’ statement about foreigners and some people pointed that out as an obnoxious statement (like crude stereotyping and generalization). however, i know as time goes, i can (hopefully) change my mind on foreigners and not applying stereotypes and generalizations. it’s stupid, i know, but it got me away from problems dealing with certain individuals

I know stupidity has its own advantages while seeking knowledge which is generally difficult to acquire when you are seen by people as someone who is strong and intelligent. But, acting stupid ia difficult too. Sometimes we can get lost in it that it will become second nature to ask questions to which you already know answers for. Which is why I always suggest to be strong and intelligent when you are capable of being one. Otherwise, slowly you will become dumb while looking for an advantage of acquiring knowledge.

The truth shall set you free. Truth trumps everything, it’s something no one can take from you. When you see nothing but the truth, you automatically tend to see the truth in others, even when they are playing the fool. I’ve come across people line this, and the eyes never lie. They are taken back when you are straight forward and have no indication of having to think of manipulate. There is an absolute power in the truth. But this is harder than people think. I am relatively truthful but more so than most people I come across. And it does come at a cost, but not at the cost of your soul.

I'm going to college but I also work for a construction company. When I'm on the job I ask questions and obey orders. I'm new so I don't know everything, and I unapologetically display my ignorance any time I don't know something. I also get regularly sent out onto work sites, and the regulars give me shit but still respect me for the work I do. Just because I go to college doesn't make me any "smarter" than the rest of the team, and even if I was it wouldn't mean shit if I don't know what they know already. The ability to say "I don't know" is a super power that the modern school system tries to beat out of you. Once you can state with confidence that you have no idea, the world sees you are ready to truly learn
this opens a new perspective for me and I think it lessens perfectionism.

I don't see myself as an intelligent person per say, I think that everyone is born with a window to view the outside world, this window is mostly 2 inches by 2 inches. However, every so often one of us is born with a slightly bigger window, and we have a broader view. The frustration comes when you want to tell the people with the smaller window what you see. Of course, they will not believe you and think you are crazy because their window is a lot smaller and can't fathom the idea of anything else. Sometimes, there will be individuals who do listen and even though their window is smaller, you teach them to use their imagination to see through your window or they use your teachings to make their window bigger. Keep in mind those kinds of people are very rare!
In dealing with normal people you can let the "stupid or ignorant "make mistakes as they are capable of learning and being instructed.
However in dealing with the narcissistic persons it seems that they are the true definition of "stupid " since they will make the same mistakes endlessly without ever learning.

I'm a dumb guy, I can't seem to remember basic things that other people just seem to be able to hold on to like peoples names or a thing we did together a few months ago. I am however very good at picking up on context clues and finding new approaches to problems. My smarter friends are definitely better at applying learned knowledge but I'm more adaptable in the moment!
